Toro Rosso's troubles continued from final practice, with Pierre Gasly unable to participate in the session due to the ongoing engine troubles. Brendon Hartley, in the other car, managed to get through to Q2 but couldn't post a lap time after his car broke down with another suspected engine issue. McLaren also got both their cars into the second session, but opted not to set competitive lap times, knowing they have hefty penalties to take.

Out front, it was looking good for Max Verstappen, who posted a solid lap time to take provisional pole, but he was beaten to the punch at the very final moment by Sebastian Vettel - and by the smallest of margins.
