All eyes were on Sebastian Vettel when the power unit on his Ferrari failed during his first stint out on track, and although the team tried to patch him up and send him on his way again, it was all over before it got started. Vettel didn't set a lap time in the first qualifying session and therefore was out in Q1. That left the way clear for Lewis Hamilton to snatch pole position, although Kimi Räikkönen did his best to stay close to the Mercedes.

Haas and Sauber had both drivers drop out in Q1, whilst Williams and Toro Rosso had both drivers out in Q2, leaving McLaren to get both drivers into the top ten. Red Bull locked out the second row of the grid, with Bottas back down in fifth place.
