Q1 finished earlier than anticipated in Suzuka, when Romain Grosjean hit the barriers with a big impact crash. The red flags brought the action to a halt and the session wasn't restarted. Sauber dropped out, as did Stroll and Gasly. The McLarens were split, Fernando Alonso making it into the top ten but Stoffel Vandoorne missing out and finishing 11th.

At the front end of the field, Mercedes had something extra over and above everyone else, with Hamilton and Bottas earning a 1-2 finish for the team. However, penalties will adjust the grid quite significantly.
