It's not unusual for Alonso to want to put in a superstar lap right towards the end of a race to prove that he does still have pace in him even if the machinery he's using won't deliver. This weekend, however, McLaren did seem to have improved with both the drivers finishing in the top ten of the race. Alonso's last gasp effort was down to sheer pace, rather than strategy or tyres, and he earned that fastest lap.

Behind him, race winner Sebastian Vettel was only fourth on the list, whilst Max Verstappen's third shows what pace the Red Bull had, and what a continuing disappointment it was that we didn't have both cars in the competition.
