Three drivers were given penalties after qualifying in Shanghai, with both Jolyon Palmer and Romain Grosjean deemed not to have slowed down enough during a yellow flag period. Antonio Giovinazzi's crash brought out the yellow flags, and although Grosjean has argued the fact by posting some data on social media, the penalties force the two drivers to the back of the field.

Meanwhile, Giovinazzi himself has also picked up a five place grid drop due to a change of gearbox within his rapidly patched up Sauber.
