The lack of running was evident in the early stages of qualifying for the Chinese race, with some of the newer drivers struggling to make an impact. Max Verstappen suffered an engine issue that meant his best lap wasn't good enough to get him out of Q1, and then Antonio Giovinazzi spun in the final stages of the session to halt the flying laps of several runners. Romain Grosjean and Stoffel Vandoorne also missed out on the cut.

Out front, it was a battle between Mercedes and Ferrari for the top positions and in the end Lewis Hamilton pipped everyone to pole by a full tenth of a second. Sebastian Vettel secured the second spot, with Valtteri Bottas knocked to the second row of the grid by just 0.001 seconds.
