Toro Rosso suffered at the hands of the penalty gods in Brazil, with both drivers taking power unit penalties. Pierre Gasly had a total of 35 grid positions to drop, and Hartley had just the ten to deal with, but either way, the drivers were at the back of the grid. The only car behind them was Lewis Hamilton, who had to start from the pit lane due to his qualifying crash.

Other drivers with penalties include Marcus Ericsson and Lance Stroll, who both took hits of five places for gearbox changes, and start the race just in front of the Toro Rosso pair.
