There was disappointment for the Williams team, as both drivers dropped out in the first session of qualifying, along with Sauber and Daniil Kvyat. Stoffel Vandoorne made it into Q2 but couldn't participate in the session, whilst the same happened to Jolyon Palmer just one session later. The Renault driver put on a great performance to get into the top ten but then couldn't complete a single flying lap in the final minutes.

Hamilton equalled Michael Schumacher's career pole positions record, beating Sebastian Vettel to the top spot by just a couple of tenths of a second. Bottas and Räikkönen settled for the second row, with Red Bull securing the third row of the grid.
