Valtteri Bottas pushed hard to secure his first ever pole position in Formula One, beating teammate Lewis Hamilton by less than a tenth of a second on their final flying laps. Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo settled for the second row of the grid, whilst their Red Bull and Ferrari teammates were pushed to the third row.

Elsewhere, Romain Grosjean and Felipe Massa made it into the top ten, as did both Renault drivers - Jolyon Palmer who was in Q3 for the first time. McLaren saw Fernando Alonso get into Q2 but he could go no further due to an engine issue, and Stoffel Vandoorne dropped out in the first session.
