Lewis Hamilton went into qualifying knowing he would have a five place grid drop as the gearbox on his Mercedes was changed. He finished the Saturday session in third place but has now dropped back to eighth for the race.

Meanwhile, Pascal Wehrlein starts from the pit lane after the Sauber team had to make changes to his turbocharger whilst the car was under parc fermé conditions. Sauber had a disappointing qualifying anyway, with Marcus Ericsson taking up the last of the grid positions.

  • 5 place drop for Lewis Hamilton. The gearbox of car 44 has been changed before 6 consecutive events have expired.
  • 0 place drop for Pascal Wehrlein. As the turbocharger is of a different specification from the one originally used in qualifying the competitor is required to start from the pit lane.
