Romain Grosjean was an important part of the fight for pole position in Spielberg, but not due to some surprising pace in the Haas. Instead, his car stopped out on track during the final few minutes which meant the last gasp efforts for the top spot were thwarted. Instead, Valtteri Bottas secured pole position with Sebastian Vettel behind him.

Lewis Hamilton was third fastest after a scrappy couple of laps, and he goes into race day knowing he's got a five place grid penalty to take as well. Meanwhile in the other Haas, Magnussen broke the suspension of his car making it a bad day in the Haas team. Williams were also disappointed to have both cars drop out in Q1, with even Jolyon Palmer ahead of them in his Renault.
