All eyes were on the Williams crew who had to work intensely hard to get Lance Stroll's car patched up and ready to go for qualifying after a late FP3 crash. They managed it, but the Canadian will take a gearbox penalty from his 19th place grid slot anyway. Jolyon Palmer bemoaned the performance of his Renault that saw him last and out in Q1.

Up front, Toro Rosso managed to get both their drivers into the top ten shootout, whilst Romain Grosjean finished up sixth overall to gain Haas's best qualifying performance to date. Daniel Ricciardo suffered an embarrassment in front of his home crowd, crashing out of qualifying and winding up tenth. Meanwhile, it was another pole position for Lewis Hamilton, joined on the front row by Sebastian Vettel.
