Lewis Hamilton was on top of the timesheets for the afternoon session in Australia, but Sebastian Vettel managed to split the Mercedes duo as Ferrari hauled themselves up the order. Red Bull suffered some damage to the underfloor of Max Verstappen's car, when the Dutch driver ran through the gravel trap, but that was nothing compared to Marcus Ericsson. He caused a virtual safety car period when he became beached in the gravel trap.

Meanwhile, Jolyon Palmer ended his day with significant damage to the Renault after hitting the walls, and Felipe Massa stopped out on track with an electrical issue.
