The pace Red Bull showed in practice fell away drastically when it counted, as the team had to settle for the second row once again. Hamilton scooped pole position, with Rosberg missing out and securing second place on the grid. Nico Hülkenberg put in a strong performance in his Force India to snatch seventh on the grid, a full half a second quicker than those behind him.

Crucially for the Force India and Williams battle, however, the latter got both of their drivers into Q3 with Carlos Sainz rounding out the top ten for Toro Rosso. In the first session, Jolyon Palmer found himself in the way of Jenson Button, with both drivers left fuming. Palmer’s race engineer apologised to him over the radio but Jolyon got through to Q2, whilst Button was knocked out, ending up in 19th place.
