Rosberg continued his domination in Germany by taking pole position for his home race, but it wasn’t as easy as his previous sessions. Lewis Hamilton looked set to be going fast enough for pole, after Rosberg had to abort his first flying lap due to some kind of electrical issue. However, Lewis locked up on his final lap which allowed Nico to move back ahead and secure the front grid slot.

Red Bull were on the second row, and Ferrari locked out the third row. Behind them, Force India and Williams scrapped for the rest of the top ten positions, with Force India winning out each time. It was a mixed day for Haas, as Gutiérrez just missed out on the top ten, whilst Grosjean was 15th but takes a gearbox penalty. Daniil Kvyat dropped out in Q1, whilst the Sauber team saw both drivers on the final row of the grid.
