Romain Grosjean became the first driver of the year to take a grid penalty, picking up a two place drop after an issue during qualifying. In the hustle for driver to get out of the pit lane for Q2, anxious to put in a banker lap before any rain arrived, Grosjean was deemed to have jumped the queue - or as the FIA put it: "not leaving the pit lane in the order he arrived."

Roberto Merhi failed to qualify within the 107% cut off but was given special dispensation by the stewards to participate. Will Stevens likely would have also been allowed to start but the ongoing issue with his Manor car meant he had to sit yet another race out.
