Nico Rosberg's engine problems in qualifying continued into the race with the German forced to retire from the Italian GP leaving Hamilton unchallenged at the front. It was Mercedes' first retirement due to mechanical troubles, and happened just a few laps from the end of the race. Lewis was joined on the podium by Sebastian Vettel and Felipe Massa, with the two Williams drivers finishing almost on top of each other as they crossed the line.

Fernando Alonso also retired, whilst the two Lotus drivers were out of the race early on due to contact on the first lap.
