Force India opted to keep both their cars in the garage as they investigated the cause of Pérez’s roll in first practice. Thus, eighteen cars took part in the afternoon session, with Lewis Hamilton once again on top of the timesheets. Both Red Bull cars managed to split the Mercedes duo, with Carlos Sainz posting a fast time for sixth in his Toro Rosso.

Meanwhile, Lotus were trying to recover from a stilted start to the day, completing as many laps as possible. Apparently their tyres were held back due to payment issues, so maximising track time was key for the afternoon session.
