Lewis Hamilton led from pole position in Canada, to take a relatively straightforward win and extend his lead in the championship once more. Rosberg finished second with Valtteri Bottas finally getting his Williams onto the podium for the first non-Mercedes/Ferrari trophy of the season. Sebastian Vettel finished fifth, which was a vast improvement on his starting position of 18th, whilst Felipe Massa recovering from his own poor grid slot to finish just behind the Ferrari driver.

Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso both retired from the race with exhaust problems, and Manor suffered their first retirement of the season with Roberto Merhi dropping out with a gearbox issue. Will Stevens was involved in a slight collision with Romain Grosjean, picking up damage to his front wing, but he continued on to finish the race.
