Through a first lap crash, an early appearance by the safety car, a Williams surge for the lead, as well as rain towards the end of the race, Lewis Hamilton kept his head and secured victory at his home race. Felipe Nasr failed to get to the grid to start the race, whilst both Lotus drivers were out on the first lap along with Jenson Button.

The Williams pair got a cracking start to sweep into the lead, Massa remaining ahead of Bottas, but a mixture of poor team strategy as well as mistimed pit stops handed victory back to the Mercedes’ pair. Sebastian Vettel also crept past to keep Williams off the podium.

Fernando Alonso managed to finish in 10th place to pick up his first points of the year, helped along the way by further retirements of Max Verstappen, Daniel Ricciardo and Carlos Sainz.
