Nico Rosberg overtook polesitter Lewis Hamilton at the first corner of the race and never looked back, scooping victory in Austria that allowed him to close the championship gap once more. Felipe Massa finished on the podium, taking third place after a battle with Sebastian Vettel that was decided by a pit lane delay for the Ferrari crew.

On the first lap, Fernando Alonso and Kimi Räikkönen collided with both retiring instantly from the race. Button retired soon after, making it a double DNF for McLaren. Other retirements included Will Stevens with an oil leak, Carlos Sainz who suffered an engine problem, and Romain Grosjean who succumbed once again to the troublesome Lotus gearbox.
