Rob White has forged an F1 career for himself that currently finds him at the French engine factory of Renault Sport. Having worked as an engineer at Cosworth, and a technical director at the Renault race team, White has experience from all angles of F1, both in and out of the paddock. From a deputy technical role, White was promoted to Chief Technical Officer at the start of 2015.

Biography

White graduated from university with a degree in mechanical engineering, and went to work for Cosworth as they built and supplied power plants for the IndyCar series. In 1990, he was promoted to a senior engineering position, and a few years later he made the move across the pond to work for Cosworth USA.

In 1997, White turned his attention to Cosworth’s Formula One efforts, which in turn meant a move back to the UK. He left the manufacturer in 2003 and joined the Renault F1 team as a technical director, focusing on the engines, alongside Bob Bell who was in charge of chassis development.

In 2005, another promotion saw White moving to a new country, as he became deputy managing director of the engine department. He was based at the factory in Viry Châtillon, despite not speaking an awful lot of French initially. He remained with the company through their withdrawal from F1 and their new initiative as engine suppliers Renault Sport. Ahead of the 2015 season, he was promoted to Chief Technical Officer, looking ahead to acquiring new skills and utilising their already acquired skills to better effect.
