Russell came through for the Sauber team when they were in something of a crisis, temporarily covering the position of Head of Track Engineering during the 2016 season. When Xevi Pujolar joined the team, however, Russell was able to return to his previous role, Head of Performance Integration.

Paul Russell made a good impression on Felipe Nasr when he was drafted in to be a pre-season test engineer for the Sauber driver. After successfully testing together, Russell was then moved into the race engineer role for Nasr full time towards the end of the 2015 season.

At the start of the 2016 season, Sauber were undergoing serious financial problems and there was a change of leadership in the engineering department. Giampaolo Dall'Ara departed the squad as Head of Track Engineering, and his replacement, Tim Malyon, only lasted three months in the job. When Malyon left, Paul Russell was promoted to the role of Chief Race Engineer, taking on a lot of the duties, on an interim basis.

When Sauber finally got their act together and hired Xevi Pujolar for the Head of Track Engineering role, Russell moved to his previous role of Head of Performance Integration.
