Clear started out in design engineering for motorsport teams but quickly found his calling as a race engineer - sitting on the pit wall for the likes of Jacques Villeneuve, Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton. He has worked for many teams up and down the F1 paddock but was most loyal to the BAR/Honda/Brawn/Mercedes outfit. At the end of 2014, however, he moved across to Ferrari to become head of race activities.

Biography

Jock Clear picked up a degree in mechanical engineering before heading to the world of motorsport, starting as a designer for Lola Cars. He joined the Benetton team in the late 1980s, and moved on to Leyton House and followed it up with Team Lotus.

At Lotus, he took up the position of race engineer, which was to be his role for the next few seasons. The team quit the sport at the end of 1994, so Clear moved to Williams where he helped guide David Coulthard and Jacques Villeneuve to success. After picking up a championship with Jacques, Clear followed the Canadian driver to BAR and continued to engineer for them after Villeneuve left the team.

Jock remained with the squad through their period as Brawn GP, where they won the championship, and into their current guise as Mercedes. He has been race engineer for Nico Rosberg, Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher, but at the end of the 2014 season he opted to move to Ferrari for a new challenge.

Clear became head of race activities, replacing the outgoing Pat Fry during one of Ferrari's many reshuffles.
