Watson’s brief career as a rally driver gave him the boost he needed to move to the UK as a mechanic, working first in the rally championships before moving to Formula One. After spending time at various different teams, he moved to Caterham as team manager, and then to Toro Rosso in the same position in 2014.

Graham Watson’s first foray into motorsport was actually as a driver, and co-driver, in the World Rally Championship. He was participating in races in his native New Zealand, before jumping at the chance to become a mechanic for the Ford rally team in the UK.

In 1994, Watson moved from rallying to single seaters, joining the Paul Stewart Racing team as a mechanic. He made his way up to Formula One, working for the Benetton team and for BAR Honda. He remained at BAR through their various iterations, as Honda itself and then as Brawn GP.

After winning the world championship, Graham moved across to the Caterham squad, another team that went through several different identities, taking up the position of team manager. He made the switch to Toro Rosso in 2014, sticking with the team manager role, and making his first appearance in a press conference for the squad during the 2016 season.
