After progressing through Asian karting and single seater championships, Gelael joined the European Formula 3 series. He stayed for two seasons and followed up with a promotion to GP2. In 2017, he joined Toro Rosso for a test driver role, making his F1 debut in the first practice of Singapore.

F1 biography

Gelael took part in Asian karting championships before moving to single seater car racing. In 2013, he took part in the 2013 European F3 series, and combined it with British Formula 3 as well. He remained for a second season in 2014, before moving to Formula 2 and GP2 the following year.

He finished third in the Asian Le Mans Series during the 2015 off-season, and then rejoined GP2 for 2016. For 2017, Gelael joined Toro Rosso as a test driver, and took part in the first practice session of the Singapore Grand Prix that season.
