As it happened: Sidepodfilmclub - The Italian Job

  • 19:43

Hello friends! We are gathered here today to celebrate the joy that is movie-watching! Together we shall consume The Italian Job, the original and presumably the best.

  • 19:45

I haven't seen it, so this will be a first for me.

  • 19:48

Normally we would share a photo of where we're starting from so all can try and aim for the same place. Pushed for time, so it's the Paramount pictures logo we've paused on.

  • 19:48

The stars didn't fly in or anything, they were all just there!

  • 19:50

For fact fans, the original film was released in 1969. It stars Michael Caine, Noel Coward and Benny Hill. It has an average 7.3 out of 10 rating on IMDB, which is pretty good!

  • 19:55

    Five minute warning.

  • 20:00

    Green flagGo, go, go!

  • 20:01

Those are some Top Gear roads right there.

  • 20:05

Look at Michael Caine, so sprightly, so youthful!

  • 20:05

What kind of prison serves meals four times a day?

  • 20:10

So he has a suit and a car, now it must be time to get back into trouble.

  • 20:14

Hitching a ride on a milk float! That's the kind of thing Marty McFly would do.

  • 20:16

Ooh, computer program on a roll of film. Retro.

  • 20:17

How rich do you have to be to have someone pick up and pass you the phone sitting right next to you?

  • 20:18

She put the phone down for him too. Quite the job description.

  • 20:21

This Charlie Croker talks to himself a lot.

  • 20:29

The lady likes to put pink bows on her cats. Just sayin'.

  • 20:32

Bill Bailey is part of the gang!

  • 20:34

"The only way to get through it is we all work together as a team. And that means you do everything I say."

  • 20:36

    Yay doors!

  • 20:40

The mafia are a pretty big thing to overlook.

  • 20:43

Minis! It's an actual Mini adventure.

  • 20:47

What a waste of some nice cars. Nasty mafia people.

  • 20:52

Gotta love the old computers. So huge and unwieldy, but without them, where would we be?

  • 20:57

"One more thing, just remember this, in this country they drive on the wrong side of the road."

  • 21:02

As Will said in the comments, driving gold through the streets in a gold van isn't the most subtle you can be.

  • 21:05

I've been eyeing up the Fiat 500 range for a potential new car at some point. They look just like the ones on screen though. Not much changes in the Fiat range, clearly!

  • 21:05

With Minis, you don't expect much to change, of course.

  • 21:07

That is a ridiculous traffic jam. You'd just walk, wouldn't you?

  • 21:12

He managed to just blow the doors off this time then.

  • 21:17

These minis are really quite cool, whizzing about all over the place, tail-happy because of the gold in the boot. I want one!

  • 21:18

Lou: FBFB you want a mini, or a mini with gold in the boot? :)

    I'll take either!

  • 21:21

Hiding your Mini amongst other Minis outside the car factory is about as genius as it gets.

  • 21:25

Is it bad to feel sorry for the police car when it gets washed away because it's not as good as a Mini?

  • 21:30

I'm super impressed with their getting cars onto the bus antics!

  • 21:31

    Nooooooo, not the Minis!

  • 21:36

Well this is Mission Impossible tense.

  • 21:38

Chequered flag"Hang on a minute lads, I've got a great idea."

  • 21:39

So that's a genuine cliffhanger right there.

  • 21:43

Those kind of endings can be a bit frustrating, but don't worry, science has the answer! Wikipedia describes a competition held in 2008 for an answer that is physically possible. It only took 40 years but there's a solution!

  • 21:47

That was a lot of fun, and a great way to spend a Sidepodcamp evening. Thanks one and all for joining in! Until next time, fact fans.
