Sidepodcast Jukebox #1 - A bumper event of Sidepodnostalgia delving deep into the podcast archives

Published by Christine

A new, or perhaps old, feature from Sidepodcast looks into the archives in a two-hour event, featuring some of the best bits of five years (and counting!) of podcasting. Part live streaming test, part excuse for a chat, part look back at some of the ridiculous predictions we made, and the crazy things we've said. The playlist is set, the live stream is waiting, come on in and relive some Sidepodcast Gold.

As it happened: Sidepodcast Jukebox #1

  • 17:15

Hello there, welcome, this is a new Sidepodevent. If you can call looking at the past something new.

  • 17:16

Over the next couple of hours, I've handpicked some of Sidepodcast's vast archive to bring you 120 minutes of audio excellence. Well, audio, anyway.

  • 17:17

If this sounds like your kind of thing, we'll be live streaming in fifteen minutes, and you can join in the comments here:

  • 17:18

Traditionally, as you may know, I am not a fan of delving into the archives. Here at Sidepodcast we thrive on trying to constantly improve, and thus looking back can only be embarrassing.

  • 17:18

However, we're testing out the live streaming and Mr C is under the weather (get well soon!), and what better way to spend two hours than with Sidepodcast history?

  • 17:19

I've not just picked out the best bits, although there are no doubt some gems in there. We've got longer shows, shorter shows, roundtable discussions, panels, interviews, outside broadcasts, all since we began at the end of 2006.

  • 17:20

As they're playing, I'll be with links and commentary, trying to cover up for any of our hideous predictions and pretend we aren't quite as silly as we sound. It should be fab!

  • 17:26

Just under five minutes to go. Here's a little trip down memory lane!

  • 17:29

Almost ready to begin, if you want to listen in, you should find a live player any moment now on the homepage, on any sidebar or in the dashboard.

  • 17:29

You may have to refresh your page if you've been sitting in the dashboard, for example.

  • 17:30

    Green flagIt begins!

  • 17:30

We're starting with Sidepodchat - I'm not saying they're champions, I'm just saying they're there:

  • 17:31

A roundtable discussion with Bassano, Lukeh, Pat, Gavin and Steven lasting ten minutes.

  • 17:32

The question for this show was who would be joining Robert Kubica at Renault in 2011, which is slightly unfortunate, I suppose, but a great topic, nonetheless.

  • 17:33

QuoteComment from Mark: I'm guessing Christine will mention Franck at some point in this.

  • 17:33

Thankfully, I was just in charge of the timer, and not in the discussion itself!

  • 17:34

Ah, those were the days, when the confusion at Renault was who the reserve drivers were and not what their flippin' name was.

  • 17:36

There were a couple of votes there for Petrov to remain at Renault - he certainly did, but it was a different lineup than we had anticipated. More:

  • 17:36

Bassano on Petrov: "I think he's going to get elbowed out, unless it becomes a cash call."

  • 17:37

There is nothing to be read into the fact that this first show is all about Petrov, by the way.

  • 17:39

Mr C: "Can it get any worse for them than 2009, really?"

  • 17:40

Since recording the show, it got an awful lot worse for Renault, but then got a bit better too.

  • 17:42

    Bassano: "Lada F1, 2012 - I'm not saying they're champions, I'm just saying they're there."

    Pat: "No, no."

  • 17:42

The conclusion of the entire show: Renault, we don't know.

    A fantastic ten minutes.

  • 17:43

Next up, an F1Minute, also on Renault - to continue the theme. Romain Grosjean to partner Räikkönen for 2012

  • 17:44

Having to call them LRGP was not a comfortable thing, I must say.

  • 17:44

Next on the list: F1 Advent Calendar 2009 (Day 20) - Rise and fall

  • 17:44

Just in case anyone was calling favouritism on a show about Petrov followed by a minute about Grosjean, this one is about... Fisichella.

  • 17:45

Back when I pronounced it Alger-sweary.

  • 17:47

When KERS actually made a difference? "It was so easy for Kimi in the KERS assisted Ferrari to get past the Force India..."

  • 17:47

Ah, Fisichella second, and Luca Badoer last. Telling.

  • 17:47

Another F1Minute now - Dennis shares his thoughts of F1's future

  • 17:48

That's Ron Dennis. My headlines definitely needed some work.

  • 17:48

QuoteComment from lou: quiet christine :)

  • 17:48

My projection also needed some work.

  • 17:48

Way back in April 2008, Red Bull junior driver Brendon Hartley was behind the wheel of the car!

  • 17:49

And now, an F1 Debrief - Because they go so really fast:

  • 17:49

This is from October 2010, just after our comeback from the dreaded hiatus.

  • 17:50

"No good week, bad week as it's been a short week."

  • 17:51

Mr C reveals himself to be an Eddie Stobart truck lover. Who knew?

  • 17:51

QuoteComment from Mr C: i have a favourite truck?

  • 17:52

It boggles my mind a little bit that we're recommending the channel 5 on demand player over the iPlayer. How things changed!

  • 17:53

More information about Trucks & Trailers:

  • 17:54

I had forgotten about the CBBC F1 commentaries. They were dire!

  • 17:54

Mr C on Lewis Hamilton: "You do have to worry about the amount of PR events that man is doing. Do you not think the team are working him too hard?"

  • 17:56

    I don't watch a lot of children's TV. Honest.

  • 17:58

A child's explanation of downforce: "I was surprised they need wings, because they go so fast, the wings help the tyres to pressure down, so the tyres don't go flying up."

  • 17:59

QuoteComment from Will: Is that girl being trained to become a new pit-lane reporter?

  • 17:59

We referred to him as The Joe.

  • 18:01

Seems like in this episode, it is BFF Heikki for Mr C. He gets around, that one.

  • 18:03

With Thursday Thoughts and Friday Fun, we were asking for suggestions for Wednesday.

  • 18:04

Oh, those were the days when I didn't have a dedicated Contact page and I didn't moan about it every show!!

  • 18:05

    I won that battle though:

  • 18:06

James' Who Will be World Champion post:

Fernando Alonso won the vote with 47%.

  • 18:08

The Sidepodcast Daily posts were pretty flippin' fabulous - and all stored in one handy place:

  • 18:09

We were almost at the big 5-0 when it comes to guest authors, and now we are at 76 including us. People are amazing!

  • 18:10

    Not, silly woman.

  • 18:11

Mr C's tech talk. Scalable vector somethings and stuff. Best quote though: "I was ready to pounce on my graph." Bless him.

  • 18:11

QuoteComment from Mark: Details on the About page. #TheDarkAges

  • 18:12

I believe we may be hearing some outtakes next from that same show. Tongue twisters ahoy.

  • 18:13

The tongue twisters came from here:

  • 18:14

    "Tragedy strategy."

  • 18:18

We've even got outtakes of the outtakes. How embarrassing.

  • 18:18

Moving on, we have F1 Digest for the Brazilian Grand Prix of, drum roll please, 2008.

  • 18:18

    Anyone remember that one?

  • 18:20

F1 Digest was a lovely little show, featuring four short episodes over a race weekend. A preview, a free practice show, then qualifying and the race. Time consuming but I wonder if it helped me retain any information about the races.

  • 18:22

Live commenting for this race ( ) got 2,362 comments. It was kinda a good one.

  • 18:23

I'm not 100% sure that me reading out the standings is captivating audio, really.

  • 18:25

The teams section is a forerunner (and audio version) of my current team by team review. For example,

  • 18:26

QuoteComment from Will: ... Most exciting end to a GP ever. Have we managed to beat that this season?

  • 18:29

One of the BMW drivers: "Especially when I was behind Jarno Trulli, I lost downforce." Trulli has a lot to answer for in this race.

  • 18:30

If I heard myself correctly, I just said Massa was magnanimous in defeat. That word would come back to haunt him!

  • 18:31

Back to F1Minute, and this one from 4th August 2009: Piquet and Ferrari start war of words

  • 18:31

This also could have used a better headline, as it sounds like they are fighting with each other. Did Piquet ever have grief with Ferrari? Not this time, anyways.

  • 18:32

Ferrari's bitterness: “Guess who opposed the test with the F60? A team that hasn't won anything for years and yet didn't pass over the opportunity to demonstrate once more a lack of spirit of fair play.”

  • 18:32

Now, the Best of Sidepodpanel series 1:

  • 18:33

There was a team called Apple Cake!

  • 18:34

    Franck mention!

  • 18:37

Can you do a decent impression of a Formula One car?

  • 18:38

An impression of Ron Dennis drunk dialling: "Uh, Fernando?"

  • 18:39

That still makes Mr C laugh a lot. The show was not just about impressions, honest.

  • 18:39

"The best car... in the world."

  • 18:40

Another F1Minute for you know, 24th October 2010: Alonso wins in the first Korean GP

  • 18:41

"Sutil made one overtaking move too many and crashed out."

  • 18:41

Way back in the archives we go, with episode 47, an outside broadcast from Autosport International 2008 -

  • 18:42

Filming at AutosportI was allowed in charge of the video camera at Autosport International.

  • 18:43

Mr C: "I don't really want to see Fisichella do another year at the back of the grid but... it's better than Ralf."

  • 18:44

I mentioned if I bought a new car, I wouldn't want a Toyota. Things don't change that much:

  • 18:45

Post-show thoughts from Mr C: my microphone technique sucks big time. i'm using a handheld mic for the first time (christine has experience from past videos), and the constant movement, makes me sound like a poor karaoke singer. i can only apologise and promise to try harder next time.

  • 18:48

Ooh, I remember the confusion over Lewis Hamilton and his entry list number. Such a tiny controversy.

  • 18:48

Jenson at AutosportJenson at Autosport International 2008.

  • 18:53

Webber at Autosport InternationalWebber takes his turn on stage at Autosport International. It was a bad interview, he wasn't boring, right?

  • 18:55

Oh no, the Kubica pronunciation debate. As much as I miss the man, I don't miss that.

  • 18:57

We may or may not have got an exclusive peek at a Williams car that may or may not have been for the coming year. Why we do not do exclusives.

  • 18:58

QuoteComment from Mr C: don't think motorcity ever got built?

  • 19:00

Ah, that was a fun show. Now a mini series episode, Forgotten F1 Teams - Arrows:

  • 19:01

Arrows were part of the first series of Forgotten F1 Teams, the omnibus is here:

  • 19:01

There was a second series too, with another mixed batch of seven teams:

  • 19:04

I like that music: "I still remember..."

  • 19:04

Next up, an up to date F1Minute: Eric Boullier against Silverstone venue for young driver test

  • 19:05

Back to F1 Digest, and we're into a set of four preview shows that introduced the 2010 season. This one was for the regulation changes:

  • 19:07

KERS was gone for 2010, a costly waste of time, we thought then. But now it's back, how's the technology holding up?

  • 19:09

Bernie's medal system didn't quite make it through to become a Sporting Regulation for 2010, but the scoring system did change a little. More points at the top, and all the way back to tenth.

  • 19:12

The other episodes in the F1Digest preview included drivers: teams: and the calendar:

  • 19:13

Last one now, we've got the best of show, F1 Debrief - 2009 in Audio:

  • 19:15

    The first ever Joe show!

  • 19:16

And a bonus plug for F1 Big Picture:

  • 19:18

The fantastic show from Hyde Park, post-Science Museum visit, with an incredibly diplomatic Lukeh:

  • 19:20

Let's not mention the Felipe Baby thing.

  • 19:21

Mr C was super impressed with the live link-up with Scott at Silverstone:

  • 19:22

A quote from that post: "Two Skype links, one iPhone, a live streaming server and a question about a beard!"

  • 19:27

Mr C's strops are legendary. Emptying your Fantasy Racers team can only end in a 301 place drop for the next race.

  • 19:28

The Sidepodradio event raised a massive £680, it was amazing.

  • 19:28

  • 19:29

Christine: "Not only was it a memorable qualifying, it was also a memorable race."

Mr C: "Will you remember that in years to come?"

Christine: "Well, I probably won't, because I have a terrible memory."

  • 19:31

Chequered flagThat's all! Two hours of nostalgia complete. It's been great looking back, thanks for joining in the fun!

  • 19:32

I would like to state for the record, that we agreed on two hours of content and I managed to create a playlist of 02:00:15. Those fifteen seconds are annoying, but that isn't bad at all.

  • 19:33

Thanks to all for joining today, and thanks for 5+ years of awesomeness. Stay tuned to for much, much more!
