Sidepodcamp Week 1, Part 1 - Sidepodcast Summer Camp 2013

Published by Christine

It's arrived at last, the very first Sidepodcast Summer Camp. What started as a vague passing idea has now become a living, breathing virtual camp. We've got a fortnight of fun and games ahead, but it all starts here. This (and subsequent) event threads will be the base of the camp, and you can follow the Factbyte Factbox for updates and guidance along the way. Come on in, as they say, the virtual water is lovely!

As it happened: Sidepodcamp Week 1

  • 07:02

Hello everyone! Welcome along to the first ever Sidepodcast Summer Camp! We're here to fill part of the Formula One summer break with a fortnight of vaguely related fun and games.

  • 07:02

You may have seen the schedule I published a while back in preparation for this fabulous event. It's here: http://t.co/WsR6cQ306x (like all good schedules, it's subject to change).

  • 07:02

So today is the Camp Check-In, which is all about arriving, picking your cabins and roommates, registering any allergies you might have, and unpacking.

  • 07:03

There are two tasks on the agenda today: one is to find out who is joining us for camp, and the other is to decide what kind of camp it is!

  • 07:04

The first thing to do is introduce yourself, even if you're a regular visitor to Sidepodcast. There may be new campers visiting and they need to find out who we all are! I've been looking at some icebreaker type games and boy, there are a variety of things out there. Some better than others!

  • 07:04

I like the idea of People Bingo: http://adulted.about.com/od/icebreakers/qt/peoplebingo.htm What things would we need for F1 fans?

"Has a piece of team merchandise?"

    "Has been to a race?"

  • 07:05

The other thing we need to do is make sure we have the right layout for our camp. Do we have a lake? Do we need one? There's got to be a go-kart track, that makes a lot of sense. Perhaps a mechanics shed alongside for the tinkerers of the group.

  • 07:05

Talking of tinkerers, Mr C has been banished to a groundskeepers lodge apart from everyone else. He has been making fun of my camp idea from the get-go, so this is his punishment. However, I have the idea that the he'll have a lodge with mowers and rakes and groundskeeper stuff, but then he'll press a button, a fake wall will move, and there'll be bright lights and heaps of monitor screens and technology. You know the type.

  • 07:06

I heard talk yesterday of whether there will be shops, restaurants and hotels at this camp. I don't know if we'd go that far, but I definitely know I'm not staying in a tent. We know how that works out! Has anyone been to a summer camp before? How do people feel about regular camping? I'm voting for walls, electricity, water, not too far from civilisation. Kind of like home!

  • 07:07

So introduce yourself, have a think about where you are, make some suggestions, consult the maps, and we'll get this camp underway!

  • 10:30

Get to know your fellow campers by playing F1 People Bingo! How many do you score? http://twitter.com/sidepodcast/status/364317009162424320/photo/1

  • 19:17

For anyone struggling to find the location of the camp, Mr C has whipped up a flag. Or as he puts it: "couldn't find the flag, but found the pole and someone's spare bed sheet. good news is, you can't miss us. bad news is, you may be in for a chilly evening."

  • 20:15

So, I have done the maths and it seems as though the average score for our F1 People Bingo is... drum roll, please... 18! That is not bad at all!

A round up of the action so far on Day 1 - a newsletter! http://twitter.com/sidepodcast/status/364472012506279937/photo/1

  • 07:13

Good morning campers, or as I think it would only be fitting to say: Hi de hi!

  • 07:14

Hope everyone had a restful evening because there's lots of work in store for you today.

  • 07:16

Now you're all settled in, it's time for some camp basics, and we need to decide on the following:

    • Logo
    • Flag
    • Slogan
    • Theme tune
    • T-shirts
    • Ground rules
  • 07:19

I know there has been some work on the theme tune already, the results of the M*A*S*H style collaboration have been posted courtesy of Jordan: https://sidepodcast.com/snippet/sidepodcast-painless-sung-theme-mash-suicide-painless-sidepodcast-summer-camp-theme-tune

  • 07:20

We've also started work on the ground rules. So far we have this: No loitering.

  • 07:20

And Mr C wanted us to keep off the grass, but after the planes, trains and automobiles all took to the run off areas to slow to a halt and drop off their passengers yesterday, it may already be too late to save the greenery.

  • 12:34

We also need to decide what film to watch for Sidepodfilmclub at the weekend. Going by what is available on iTunes, there is Grand Prix (which Jordan has been requesting forever but is quite long), Driven (shorter but apparently rubbish?) and tangentially Iron Man 2 (because of Monaco, baby!)

I did try looking for decent summer camp films but wasn't inspired.

  • 19:20

The Italian JobOkay, for those who are wishing to participate in the Sidepodfilmclub this Saturday, the chosen film is The Italian Job. That's the original 1960s version, with Michael Caine having some door trouble, rather than the less-successful remake.

Thanks to the suggestion by Lou. I've not seen it but I've only ever heard good things about it, so I can't wait!

Make sure to grab your copy today. There is a rental version available on iTunes if that's your chosen distribution method. Other options are always available.

  • 19:22

Time to introduce another activity to the camp, I think. This is what I have rather uninspiringly labelled The Alphabet Game. Because... it features an alphabet.

  • 19:22

Sidepodcamp A to ZThe idea is that, if there was to be an A to Z guide of Formula One, what items do you think would be best representing each letter.

For example, should it be Alonso or Adelaide? Or perhaps Australia as a whole? Or maybe even Arrows!?

  • 21:39

Here's your most bodacious newsletter update for the second day of camp: http://twitter.com/sidepodcast/status/364848204711329792/photo/1

  • 07:20

Good morning campers, rise and shine! How are we all? Missing home yet?

  • 07:21

Today is a bit of an easier morning, building towards the first Round the Campfire evening. Thinking, music, marshmallows, ghost stories, you know the drill.

  • 18:35

The Campfire is go via Wavelength - a social listening playlist thing: http://wavelength.fm/Sidepodcampfire

  • 19:38

I do need to announce a slight change to the itinerary. Hopefully there will be a live show on Friday, so the first part of the Quiz is being brought forward to Thursday, that's tomorrow. Woohoo quiz!

  • 21:33

Newsletter for the third day, where things get a bit fiery! http://twitter.com/sidepodcast/status/365208851508772864/photo/1
