Published by Leigh O'Gorman

Today sees the 100th anniversary of the Indianapolis 500 - one of the key races in world motorsport.

As the Championship moves into a section of ovals, Will Power heads Dario Franchitti in the Championship, with Oriol Servia and Ryan Briscoe not far behind; yet it was not the title leaders that emerged from qualifying.

Alex Tagliani scored a shock pole last week, with Scott Dixon and Servia alongside on the front row. Power starts from 5th and Franchitti from 9th spot. Penske's Helio Castroneves is once again gunning for his fourth Indy 500, but he will starting from 16th place.

Like all great events, there is controversy as well and 2011 has been no different. After Ryan Hunter-Reay failed to qualify, the Andretti-Autosport squad essentially bought out Bruno Junqueira's Foyt Enterprises entry, giving the American a starting spot of last.

During the week, I spoke to Conquest Racing's Pippa Mann about her first Indy 500 - she will be starting from 31st position. The podcast can be found here - http://t.co/An5SF1n

With this being the centennial race, I found a piece of footage from 50 years ago from the show "I've Got A Secret". It's a clip starring AJ Foyt - who had just won his first 500 mile race and Ray Harroun, the winner of the inaugural event - http://t.co/6jiLsEC

It's 200 laps, taking 500 miles -- an an epic challenge for both driver and team and one of the biggest prizes in motorsport.
