This year’s Canadian Grand Prix is just moments away, which makes it a good time for confirmation of the track’s future in Formula One. Organisers at the circuit have agreed a deal with Formula One Management for a contract extension, keeping the Canada race on the calendar until 2024.

Qualifying got underway with only five drivers to be knocked out in the first session – after Esteban Gutiérrez was unable to participate. The Sauber driver crashed during final practice which left the team with too much repair work to do in too short a time. Along with the four backmarker drivers, Pastor Maldonado dropped out in Q1, after his Lotus stopped with a power unit problem.

With Nico Rosberg on pole and Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton close behind, the Canadian Grand Prix began with their fight for supremacy. However, reliability gremlins crept in midway through the race, with both drivers reporting power unit troubles that halted their domination.

Speculation over the future of renowned designer Adrian Newey has ramped up in recent weeks after talks that Ferrari were interested in his services to give them the kind of boost Red Bull have seen in recent years. Newey has opted to remain loyal to his current employers, with the pair signing a new deal to keep him with the organisation, however his duties are likely to change.

Sergio Pérez has been handed a five place grid drop for the Austrian Grand Prix, after being found the guilty party in the crash between his Force India and the Williams of Felipe Massa. The stewards talked to both drivers whilst they were in the hospital for precautionary checks – both released and cleared as healthy – finding that Pérez changed his racing line and caused the incident.

Back in April, it emerged that Red Bull had re-hired their former aerodynamicist Dan Fallows, despite McLaren claiming they had a contract for his services. Things got personal, with team bosses Christian Horner and Ron Dennis taking little digs at each other via the media, but now the pair have called a truce.

NASCAR team owner Gene Haas has been granted an F1 entry for the 2016 season, and has revealed some of his plans to get the team together in time. Where previously, he had intended to use a Dallara chassis, the American boss now wants to form a technical partnership with an existing F1 team.

"F1 has to be based on technical innovation, research and development. But this must all be done with sustainable costs and, above all, must be moved forward as part of a product that can put on a show.” So says Luca di Montezemolo, president of Ferrari. The outspoken Italian has written a letter to Bernie Ecclestone and head of CVC Donald McKenzie, requesting a meeting of key stakeholders in the sport, and those that can help push it forward.

The Schumacher family have understandably been very private about Michael Schumacher’s treatment and progress since a skiing accident in late December left him in a coma. A statement released today gives us the largest update in almost six months, and I will let it do the talking.

It’s always seemed slightly odd that Toto Wolff’s move to become an Executive Director and shareholder at Mercedes from Williams didn’t involve him relinquishing his stake in the Oxford based team. Now the Austrian businessman has started the process of selling his shares in Williams, with 5 of his 15% going to Brad Hollinger, owner of Vibra Healthcare company. Hollinger may also take up an option to pick up the final 10% later in the year, if all goes well.

One of the problems the FIA have had this weekend is getting drivers to obey the track limits, particularly at turn 8. This manifested itself big time during qualifying, with many drivers finding their lap times disallowed. Lewis Hamilton was one of those, as the Mercedes driver had his first lap in Q3 deleted, and his second ended in a spin.
