Hamilton extends his lead as Maldonado gets a point

Although Lewis Hamilton won the race and managed to extend his lead in the championship over Nico Rosberg, the real news was that Pastor Maldonado finally managed to get some points on the board. The Lotus driver finished inside the top ten for the first time this season, despite getting a handful of five second penalties. At the top, the maths finally worked against Daniel Ricciardo, leaving just the two Mercedes drivers as the only two in the championship fight.

Nico Rosberg held on to the lead for as long as possible, but it was almost inevitable that Lewis Hamilton would regain his speed and take that position. Behind them, though, there was some epic action with all the midfield drivers searching and scrabbling for those final few points positions. Sebastian Vettel did a great job to come back from a pitlane start, but ended the race slightly frustrated with a lack of performance. Jenson Button dropped out of the points after a difficult afternoon, whilst Pastor Maldonado sneaked into the top ten despite a couple of mid-race penalties.

Vettel will start from the pit lane after engine change

Sebastian Vettel's weekend starts out in the worst possible way, as the German driver has opted to take the engine related penalty that he always knew was coming. After minimal participation in qualifying, Vettel ended up 17th but will start from the pit lane for the race. Daniil Kvyat also took on board some power unit tweaks, which means his ten place grid drop puts him at the rear of the field.

Mercedes dominate, but it's an unusual turn at the top

With fewer cars taking part, qualifying took on something of a new and unique form that was interesting to behold. Sebastian Vettel sacrificed one or two laps to make sure he was ready to race tomorrow, but the German will be starting from the pit lane after penalties are handed out. Adrian Sutil gave Sauber something to cheer about, scraping into the top ten. The team are still searching for their first points of the season and this could be their chance.

Hamilton tops the times as Vettel focuses on long runs

Lewis Hamilton made it three sessions in a row as he topped the final practice timesheets with eight tenths of a second to spare over teammate Nico Rosberg. The Williams duo were close behind with Fernando Alonso the first of the non-Mercedes powered runners in fifth position. Daniel Ricciardo featured in the top ten, but Sebastian Vettel finished last. The four times world champion was concentrating on his long run pace, knowing that he'll be starting from the pit lane and thus one lap flying bursts of speed weren't really important for his weekend's success.

There was more spinning to be seen in second practice for the US Grand Prix weekend, particularly for Romain Grosjean. The Lotus driver lost control over the kerbs and headed sideways with a screech of tyres, luckily avoiding contact with anything or anyone. Jenson Button found himself getting frustrated with difficult communications due to a faulty radio, whilst Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo couldn't get the cars working to their liking.

With fewer cars than normal, Formula One took to the Circuit of the Americas to get the third from last weekend underway. A couple of drivers found themselves spinning as they got used to the track, including Adrian Sutil and Pastor Maldonado, whilst there were two Friday drivers in the mix. Felipe Nasr got behind the wheel of Bottas' Williams, whilst Max Verstappen was in the Toro Rosso usually piloted by Jean-Éric Vergne.

The Russian race provided a new challenge for the drivers, with its unique layout and brand new surface. The Williams of Valtteri Bottas capitalised to set the fastest lap of the race towards the end, with Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton behind. Jenson Button proved yet again how much pace he has in the race, whilst Daniil Kvyat was also high up the fastest laps table.

McLaren finish well, but Bottas makes it onto the podium

Lewis Hamilton took victory from Nico Rosberg, with the German having to put in a great recovery drive - almost the whole race on one set of tyres. Behind them, Bottas was best of the rest, with Jenson Button finishing well in fourth, but sounding pretty disappointed by the whole weekend after the race. Kevin Magnussen was just behind his teammate, too, in a great result for McLaren.

Gearbox penalties hit hard at the Sochi Autodrom

Three drivers have taken grid drops this weekend due to a gearbox change occurring before their required six races have been completed. Nico Hülkenberg and Kevin Magnussen have both dropped back from their qualifying positions - a particular disappointment for the McLaren driver as they've shown increased pace this weekend. Pastor Maldonado also drops back five places, a hangover from his ten place power unit penalty from Japan. He only qualified 20th, so doesn't actually move anywhere - thankfully the penalty won't continue rolling on to the USA.

Valtteri Bottas looked like he was on to spoil the fun of Mercedes in Sochi, squeezing two fastest sectors on his final lap. However, it all went wrong in the final stretch of track and he had to settle for third place - still a great result for the Williams team, particularly compared with Felipe Massa's P18, after a power unit problem on the Brazilian's car.

Pastor Maldonado's preparations for the Russian Grand Prix took another hit, as the Lotus driver could only manage to complete an installation lap in final practice. He didn't set a lap time, remaining in the garage due to a problem with the ERS on the car. Meanwhile, Kevin Magnussen brought out the red flags after stopping on track with some kind of suspension issue.

First practice at a brand new track is always something of an adventure, and the drivers took to the Sochi circuit carefully. They quickly found their feet, with Fernando Alonso the first racer to hit the tarmac, and Jenson Button the first to spin off it. Lewis Hamilton suffered a brief brake problem that saw him cut short a run and return to the garage, but both the Mercedes drivers were fastest at the end of the session.

It was Lewis Hamilton on top again as the fastest laps of the race saw the Mercedes driver a tenth faster than Jenson Button. The McLaren car showed surprising pace although Button is well known for coping well with mixed conditions. The two Red Bull drivers were next in line, with Nico Rosberg way down in sixth place.

Williams pull ahead of Ferrari, as McLaren close the gap

There was no major movement on the constructor side of the championship, although Williams did benefit from Ferrari's difficult weekend to pull out a small gap to hold their position in third. Button finished well into the points on Sunday, and has moved McLaren back to within a single point of their nearest rivals Force India. McLaren are currently sixth in the championship but looking to regain some of their momentum in these last few races.

Vettel moves up the order as Hamilton extends his lead

Fernando Alonso's retirement from the Japanese Grand Prix was disappointing, partly because they were conditions in which he could have fought for a strong result, but also because the DNF allowed Sebastian Vettel to jump him in the driver standings. Vettel moves up to fourth place with six points between the pair of them. Hamilton's victory ahead of teammate Nico Rosberg allowed him to extend his lead to ten points, but it's still exceptionally close as the season heads towards a tense finish.

Hamilton wins at Suzuka, as Bianchi crash ends race early

Sidepodcast: Race results - Japan 2014

Overshadowed by the crash of Marussia driver Jules Bianchi, Lewis Hamilton took victory at Suzuka, after sweeping past teammate Nico Rosberg partway through the race. The two Red Bull drivers were behind, with Jenson Button finishing in a strong fifth place. All thoughts remain with Bianchi, however, as the Frenchman was taken straight to hospital with a serious head injury. The crash brought out the red flags, and the race did not resume afterwards, finishing on lap 44.
