MAVTV 500 Grand Prix of Fontana

IZOD IndyCar Series 2013

Sidepodcast: MAVTV 500 Grand Prix of Fontana

by Lukeh

After a season of ups, downs and big moments along the way we're at the final championship showdown at Fontana for what should be a cracking end to a cracking season. Will Power once again sees himself on the front row but our championship contenders, Helio Castroneves and Scott Dixon, sit down in 12th and 17th respectively. Who is going to come out on top after an exciting season? And will any of us British fans be able to stay up so late without falling apart? Lots of questions to be answered!

Grand Prix of Houston

IZOD IndyCar Series 2013

Sidepodcast: Grand Prix of Houston

by Lukeh

After what has felt like an absolute age since our last Indy Car race, we are finally and sadly into the final stretch of the season with a finish in sight. Luckily for us though we have two races this weekend through the streets of Houston to enjoy. There's already been a bit of controversy this weekend with a change to the circuit to bring in a new chicane, delaying sessions following the change too. Helio Castroneves continues to sit atop the championship despite amazingly only one win in 2013, but the pressure will be on the likes of Pagenaud and Dixon to close a 50 point gap this weekend.

Juan Pablo Montoya set to return to IndyCar in 2014

The ex-F1 driver makes another US series switch

Sidepodcast: Juan Pablo Montoya set to return to IndyCar in 2014

by Christine

Whilst attention in Formula One circles has been on Kimi Räikkönen's future, another very popular driver has been analysing his options in search of a good team to house his talents. Juan Pablo Montoya, former Williams and McLaren man, has been confirmed as Penske Racing's newest IndyCar signing for 2014. Just like Kimi, Montoya's efforts outside F1 have been tempted by the NASCAR series, but he's returning to something slightly more familiar.

Grand Prix of Baltimore

IZOD IndyCar Series 2013

Sidepodcast: Grand Prix of Baltimore

by Lukeh

Onto Baltimore we head for the next race of the season as the Grand Prix of Baltimore leads us ever closer to the end of quite the season. It's taken all this time for Will Power to finally get his first win of 2013 at Sonoma last week but it's Helio Castroneves who still sits atop of the championship so far with just a few races left. His nearest rival, Scott Dixon, is the man who grabbed pole in qualifying yesterday and has a fair advantage over his rival going into the race. Can he close the gap with a win in Baltimore or will we see another turn in this championship tale in these twisty street corners tonight?

The ambassador's reception

Gil de Ferran confirmed as a spokesperson for Formula E

Sidepodcast: The ambassador's reception

by Christine

The new Formula E championship recently announced Champ Car champion Gil de Ferran as an Official Ambassador. It’s not always clear what the role of an ambassador demands, beyond attaching their good name to a sport to give it just that little bit extra credibility. In this case, as if we weren’t excited enough for the electric championship to get underway, the addition of Ferran has done exactly what it was supposed to.

Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio

IZOD IndyCar Series 2013

Sidepodcast: Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio

by Lukeh

Whilst Formula 1 may be on its summer break for a few weeks, luckily we still have a bit of open wheel racing to enjoy with the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio, a nice challenging track away from the world of ovals once more. Qualifying saw Ryan Hunter-Reay put himself at the top of the timing sheets in what will no doubt be a fair old confidence boost to his championship challenge but he does have the likes of Dixon and Andretti just behind him to challenge during the race. After a few weeks without IndyCar let's hope it's more of a summer fiesta than anything else!

Honda Indy Toronto

IZOD IndyCar Series 2013

Sidepodcast: Honda Indy Toronto

by Lukeh

If one race wasn't enough, let's have a double header weekend with the Honda Indy Toronto Grand Prix, a race that's been fairly crazy in recent memory and should provide an excellent duo of races. It's already lining up for an interesting race on the Saturday with Dario Franchitti starting on pole and, amazingly, Sébastian Bourdais on the front row too. Honestly! Of course, with Scott Dixon providing another new winner this season at Pocono we could get another new winner in 2013 with a front row like that. With the absolute carnage that was Toronto a few years back, fingers crossed after a few oval races this double header will provide a fascinating weekend of street-based racing.

Pocono IndyCar 400

IZOD IndyCar Series 2013

Sidepodcast: Pocono IndyCar 400

by Lukeh

Once again, it's Andretti Motorsport whose strong performance continues into the Pocono Raceway Indy 400 with another excellent pole position for Marco Andretti as he lines up alongside his team mate and current champion Ryan Hunter-Reay. It should be another sporting highlight to add to an action packed weekend in and out of motorsport but the three corner triangle that is the Pocono Raceyway, not to be confused with Pocoyo of course, has been much looked forward to so here's hoping it'll be an exciting race from the front and the back.

On the outside looking in? A cynical Brit on IndyCar

How the other single seater series won over this Formula One fan

Sidepodcast: On the outside looking in? A cynical Brit on IndyCar

by Lukeh

IndyCar has had quite an effect on me over the last year and a half. Aside from the brilliantly devious method of attracting Rubens Barrichello in order to allow myself to take it seriously, I will give it credit where credit is due in how it has been continually entertaining over my short time watching. As a Brit, Formula 1 has always felt like a 'European' formula, despite its obvious worldwide nature, whereas IndyCar has always been the one 'over there', very much an American sport.

Iowa Corn Indy 250

IZOD IndyCar Series 2013

Sidepodcast: Iowa Corn Indy 250

by Lukeh

For the next Indy Car race, I-owe-ya an impressive Iowa pun as the championship moves onto the Iowa Speedway where Will Power sits on pole following yesterday's heat races. It was of course the ever-present Helio Castroneves who grabbed pole following the heats but an engine penalty sees him demoted down to 11th. It'll be interesting to see if he can recover from there to help his championship charge that he's having in 2013. Nevertheless, it's another race at a speedway and after the action packed race at Milwaukee, let's hope Iowa isn't too 'corny' and instead gives us a reason to bring popcorn.

Milwaukee IndyFest

IZOD IndyCar Series 2013

Sidepodcast: Milwaukee IndyFest

by Lukeh

There is most definitely no hold up in pace with the run of IndyCar races at the moment as we have another exciting race to look forward to at the Milwaukee Mile, and once again Marco Andretti continues to impress in 2013 with blistering pace to make it onto pole. His qualifying speed smashed the record and he's absolutely having a strong run of form this season. Of course, we have had 6 different winners in 8 races and it's been an excellent season so far with plenty of surprises and first-time moments, who knows what the Milwaukee Mile could possibly bring tonight?

Firestone 550

IZOD IndyCar Series 2013

Sidepodcast: Firestone 550

by Lukeh

We're up to our eight race of the season and it's off to the Texas Motor Speedway for IndyCar's next outing, and after a great couple of races in Detroit it's sadly only the one race to entertain us this weekend. We see Will Power starting at the front alongside the much-improved Marco Andretti but the likes of Hunter-Reay, Franchitti and Castroneves aren't too far away. So as we jump back onto the ovals, will Will Power power his way to victory? Will Bourdais take out absolutely everyone again? And why isn't Sato winning everything yet? so many questions, so many answers and hopefully Texas can provide them in some way!

Chevrolet Indy Dual in Detroit

IZOD IndyCar Series 2013

Sidepodcast: Chevrolet Indy Dual in Detroit

by Lukeh

The Indy Car Grand Prix of Detroit provides all us IndyCar fans a de-treat this weekend as we get not only one race but two races, one on the Saturday and one on the Sunday. Of course this means double trouble for the drivers as double points means double money (well, it does on game shows anyways) but after the wonderfully emotional victory for Tony Kanaan at the Indy 500 after all these years, and despite Dario being the man in qualifying who was fastest but unfortunately penalised, it'll be EJ Viso who starts on pole for the first race of this action packed weekend. Let's just hope these two races are as good as the one we got last weekend!

Indianapolis 500

Sidepodcast: Indianapolis 500

Arcade Fire once sang about the month of May but forgot to mention one of the most famous parts about the month of May - the Indy 500! This prestigious race has produced many amazing moments over the years and has over a century of history, and even in its most recent race it provided an incredible ending between Dario Franchitti, Takuma Sato and Scott Dixon. Last weekend however saw the surprise pole for Ed Carpenter and the outrageously impressive front row start for newcomer Carlos Munoz doing so well for today's race - will these two prevail the entire 500 miles or will we see the likes of Power, Andretti, Hunter Reay and championship leader Sato fight their way to the front? Whatever the outcome, I'm sure it'll make for a brilliant race!

Indianapolis 500 - Qualifying

IZOD IndyCar Series 2013

Sidepodcast: Indianapolis 500 - Qualifying

by Pat W

Welcome to the Month of May at Indianapolis! Saturday is Pole Day, some 5 hours of qualifying and practice. 24 drivers locked into the field, then the top 9 fastest shoot out again for the Pole. Sunday is Bump Day, your last chance, for positions 25-33. There are 34 entries this year. Realistically Sunday is a practice day until the last hour. Saturday is the focus then, and with a year's experience, the boost levels raised and the wings trimmed out, we could see the fastest speeds in a decade. Questions? Just ask!

São Paulo Indy 300

IZOD IndyCar Series 2013

Sidepodcast: São Paulo Indy 300

by Lukeh

May is a big month for IndyCar - not only does it have arguably the world's most famous race at the end, but at the start it takes a trip down to São Paulo for today's São Paulo Indy 300. There was plenty going on in qualifying as Ryan Hunter Reay and EJ Vido solidified an Andretti front row for this unforgiving street circuit, which has provided many highlights since its inception into the calendar. The big talking point was Will Power's disastrous qualifying yesterday and championship leader Helio Castroneves starting way down in 18th - can both fight their way to the front? I'm sure it should make for a brilliant race!

Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach

IZOD IndyCar Series 2013

Sidepodcast: Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach

by Lukeh

Three races into the 2013 Indy car season and it's Dario Franchitti who finds himself back at the front for this race after being the man in qualifying yesterday. He has close competition with the likes of Hunter-Reay and Power close behind him but we're all set up for what should be a great race at the popular Long Beach street circuit. It's all very close in the championship with Castroneves getting the early advantage but he starts in 6th today - can he find his way to the front or will it be the strong performances from Sato or Conway that could surprise us today?

Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama

IZOD IndyCar Series 2013

Sidepodcast: Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama

by Lukeh

Sweet Home Alabama! It's time for the second race of the 2013 season at the Barber Motorsports Circuit in Alabama where popular winner James Hinchcliffe will be looking to build on the momentum of winning two weeks ago for Andretti Autosports. It was a huge amount of fun seeing the Mayor of Hinchtown get his first IndyCar victory but I'm sure we'll get a great race with his closest rivals around him - Will Power has won here two years in a row, can he make it a hat trick of victories? Whatever happens, last years race here in Alabama was a huge amount of fun so let's hope 2013 is even better!

Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg

IZOD IndyCar Series 2013

Sidepodcast: Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg

by Lukeh

It's another new year of Indy Car racing and we kick things off in the not-Russia-at-all St Petersburg where Will Power has already found himself on pole once again, leading into the first race of the season through these sunny streets. St Petersburg will see Ryan Hunter Reay looking to retain his championship victory with a winning start, but I think we should be in for a very exciting race with the likes of Takuma Sato and Simona de Silvestro up there in very impressive qualifying positions too. Also keep an eye out for rookie Tristan Vautier who's up there in the top 6 too! After how good last season was, and despite a significant lack of Rubens in Indy Car, hopefully we'll be in for a very exciting start to the 2013 season!
