With blue skies and a bizarrely grandiose build up, the US Grand Prix got underway to much applause. Two championships were up for grabs, with both Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton able to close out a title if the results went their way. With a great first lap, the racing began in style and the undulations of the fabulous COTA track meant opportunities for overtaking continued throughout the ninety minute event.

Wet race causes chaos and significant championship swing

Sidepodcast: Race highlights - Singapore 2017

by Christine

We've not seen a wet race in Singapore until now, but the heavens opened above the Marina Bay track just as the race was about to start. With a mix of intermediate and full wet tyres on the grid, there was only ever going to be chaos into the first corner - and that's just what we got. The first half of the race was fascinating, the second half lost quite a lot of the tension that had been built up, but all in all it feels like this was a crucial point of the 2017 championship campaign.

There was talk of rain building up to this weekend's race but the weather stayed dry and the action in Spa was only hindered by one safety car period. Close racing action didn't quite deliver the fantastic Grand Prix that we might have hoped for, but there were several talking points that will no doubt be referred back to as the season continues to progress.

The temperatures were high as the red lights went out to kick off the final race before the summer break, and tempers were flaring as teammates collided, swapped positions down to team orders, and failed to change places too. There were a handful of breakdowns, one safety car period, and many, many lapped cars by the time the chequered flag fell.

There was talk of rain pre-race but it came to nothing as the complete race distance was run without a hint of the weather getting involved. Instead it came to strategy and tyres, particularly towards the end of the race when a spot of chaos kicked off with regards to the Pirelli compounds. There were a handful of good performances today, and a couple of great ones, and it all served to keep the championship battle on course and fascinating.

Tense start and finish bookend the race in Spielberg

Sidepodcast: Race highlights - Austria 2017

by Christine

The first corner and lap of the Austrian Grand Prix tend to offer up a little bit of chaos, and it was no different today as we saw a collision or two, some great starts, some poor getaways and a handful of changes of position. Whilst the middle portion of the race didn't really kick into gear, the final ten laps or so really saw strategies make a big difference and it was a superbly close finish.

Formula One's glitzy track in Monaco cannot always provide great racing, and this year it delivered on the promise with mostly processional but occasionally baffling action that say an intriguing result, a safety car period, a handful of accidents, and some great points finishes. Although we lacked overtaking opportunities, there was a lot of tension around the strategy and things looked close as the finish line approached.

Strategy takes centre stage in sunny Barcelona

Two things were going to be key for this Barcelona race day - getting a good start off the line, and making the right strategy calls at the right time. And it was those two things that dictated the winner of the race, although there were a few incidents and retirements, and a couple of penalties that also helped move the action along.

Live coverage of the highs and lows of racing in Sochi

Sidepodcast: Race highlights - Russia 2017

by Christine

No one was expecting a lot from the Russian Grand Prix, so I'm happy to report that it was perhaps the best racing in Sochi that we've seen. Make of that what you will though, there was still a lot to be desired about the smooth surface and a lack of overtaking. Still, we saw a few unexpected retirements, heard some fascinating radio messages, and experienced a first time race winner!

You wouldn't normally find F1 fans eagerly awaiting the Bahrain Grand Prix but not only was it a highly anticipated race, it also delivered some intriguing action. Damp conditions, safety car periods, and a fight to the line for the podium

Sidepodcast: Race highlights - China 2017

by Christine

There was a little bit of everything in the Chinese Grand Prix, with the race getting started in damp conditions. It was tricky for the drivers to know what to do for the best, and once decided, keep their cars on the road. However, that made it very entertaining for us watching at home. A couple of crashes, some safety car periods, an incredible array of overtaking moves and a fight to the very finish between teammates.

You always expect a bit of chaos and calamity during the Brazilian Grand Prix, but this weekend was something both brilliant and awful in equal measure. Rain delays, safety car periods, red flag stoppages and quite a few crashes meant it was a long, long, long race. But alongside that, there was some incredible driving on display and some great atmosphere in the crowd (both positive and negative).

Chaotic start in Spa to post-summer break racing

Sidepodcast: Race highlights - Belgium 2016

by Christine

The drivers only had four weeks off over the summer, but it felt like they were all starting from scratch again this weekend. The high temperatures and tyre pressures meant no one was quite sure how strategies were going to unfold, and there was plenty of jostling for position throughout the race. After first corner chaos, one red flag period, a high speed crash and another round of Räikkönen versus Verstappen, we finally managed to get the race finished and another three drivers soaked in champagne.

We were anticipating something good after a mixed up qualifying due to rain. However, the clouds stayed away today leaving us with a more traditional Hungarian Grand Prix. There were some strategy calls to watch out for, and plenty of tense fighting, but overtaking is notoriously difficult so the results were more down to luck and keeping your head down than anything else.
