Celebrating a century of classic Class acts

Class of the Field feature passes a milestone

Sidepodcast: Celebrating a century of classic Class acts

by Christine

Prolific feature writer Adam pointed out on Twitter that his Class of the Field column reached the grand old age of 100 recently. We're rubbish at keeping track of such things, but felt such a milestone couldn't pass without a spot of celebration. Class of the Field started even before we had a feature section and Adam has been a stalwart writer on Sidepodcast even when we have let our attention drift.

What the drivers get up to in their downtime

It's the lull before the storm this week, with the Spanish Grand Prix rapidly disappearing in the rear view mirrow, and the double header of Monaco/Indy 500 approaching full speed ahead. With that in mind, this week's collection of links have time to look back at the race and what came out of it, as well as ponder some of the young drivers around the grid, as well as going behind the scenes in the paddock. Enjoy!

Building up to the big events, F1 and IndyCar racing

Sidepodcast: Selection box - A true display of ultimate teamwork

The European leg of the 2017 season is about to get underway, and so the previews for the Spanish Grand Prix are emerging all over the place. What with that and the countdown to Fernando Alonso's IndyCar sabbatical, there's a lot going on in the world of F1. We start this week's collection of great content from around the web with those two subjects - an audio Spain preview, a video about changes to the cars for Barcelona, and a great piece about Alonso's opportunity.

Every week that goes by, the 2017 Formula One season offers up some more twists and turns both on and off track. This week, we learned that Pascal Wehrlein will return to the car in Bahrain, whilst Fernando Alonso has been busy trying to figure out how to spend time outside of his cockpit. The news that he'd drive in the Indy 500 this year instead of in Monaco was met with mixed reviews, but mostly positive ones. Let's start with a handful of those thoughts.

Building up to the Chinese race and breaking the sport down

Sidepodcast: Selection box - A marvel of mechanical engineering

It's been a hectic week in the world of F1, with Pascal Wehrlein's withdrawal from another race weekend and the build up to the Chinese Grand Prix, so let's not waste any time before getting straight into the fabulous links of F1 works around the web. First up we've got an audio preview for the Shanghai weekend, followed by some thoughts about the season's potential.

F1 returns in 2017 to mixed response

Sidepodcast: Selection box - One race, people

by Christine

Formula One has returned to our screens, and after the first round of the 2017 season, it's arguable that we have even more questions than we did when last year left off. This week, I've gathered together some highlights of recent F1 writings on the internet, where there was plenty of excitement, anger, anticipation, ire, happiness and rage at all the goings on in and outside of the paddock. Here's some of the best!

Selection box - Not Lewis again

Mercedes driver changes and training for F1's future

Sidepodcast: Selection box - Not Lewis again

by Christine

There's been plenty of news this week, with Mercedes finally confirming what everyone had already come to suspect - Bottas taking the spare seat next to Hamilton, and Massa coming back out of retirement to shore up the driver lineup at Williams. There are a handful of posts about that in the links that follow but other topics have come to the fore as well.

Selection box - Bored drivers

A handy set of links for the Red Bull drivers with nothing to do

Sidepodcast: Selection box - Bored drivers

Despite us only being a couple of weeks into the new year, the news keeps coming thick and fast, with changes of leadership in two of the top teams and the ongoing troubles at Manor. It's also Autosport International this weekend, so we're starting to hear news from the attendees as well, particularly if they are interviewed on the main stage. To keep you occupied if you're not there, here's a roundup of recent Formula One links that are worth your attention.

It's a brand new year, resolutions are being made (and broken already), and we're all starting to look ahead to the 2017 F1 season. Who will do well, who will step up to the plate, and let's be honest, will Manor even make it? Heading into the first full weekend of the year, I've lined up a handful of links for you to read, listen and watch, to make the most of your motorsport minutes, and stay up to date with what's happening.

So long, Nico Rosberg

Another farewell to a long-standing F1 name

Sidepodcast: So long, Nico Rosberg

by Christine

I wasn't expecting to have to write three goodbye posts this year, but of all the driver retirement announcements, Nico Rosberg's was the real surprise. The World Champion of 2016 took only a couple of days to realise he'd reached his goals and wanted to step back whilst he was still at the top of his game. And why not? There's a lot to life and as much as we love and obsess about Formula One, it's not everything. Good thoughts and best wishes to Rosberg and his family, as he embarks on the next adventure!

Farewell, Jenson Button

Wrapping up the Brit's time in Formula One

Sidepodcast: Farewell, Jenson Button

by Christine

It's been a while since we had drivers voluntarily stepping back from their race seats, but 2016 has seen potentially three names doing just that. Jenson Button initially wanted it to seem like he was just taking a single year out and could be back behind the wheel in future seasons, but as the 2016 calendar wore on, it was more obvious that he was looking forward to the break and probably wouldn't be back.

Selection box - Dropped the mic and walked off stage

A collection of Rosberg reviews and season previews

Sidepodcast: Selection box - Dropped the mic and walked off stage

by Christine

We're firmly into the off-season now, with the countdown on to the start of the 2017 season. And although there's always time to have a break and enjoy the festive quiet, we can't help but ponder and speculate what's going to happen next year, as the F1 world continues to reel from Rosberg's surprise retirement. December is also traditionally a time for season reviews, so settle in for some links that look back at the year just gone, and some looking forward to what is to come.

Selection box - Superb and consistent

Celebrating the end of the season with some fantastic reads

Sidepodcast: Selection box - Superb and consistent

by Christine

We've been waiting a long time to see who would finally be crowned the champion of the 2016 Formula One season, so it's no surprise that a lot of the writing about the sport for the last few days has been dealing with the fallout of what happened in Abu Dhabi. I've gathered together some great links to share with you about the championship showdown, but stick around to the end for some bonus extra subjects as well.

Selection box - It is crash or make the move

Brazilian racing, McLaren drama and a Motorsport Manager review

Sidepodcast: Selection box - It is crash or make the move

by Christine

It may come as no surprise to you that this week's selection of brilliant links from around the web are mostly focused on two main subjects: Max Verstappen and Ron Dennis. The pair of them have made headlines for two very different reasons, and there's plenty to dissect about each story. I've got a few other bits and bobs for you too, so let's dive straight in with a different topic.

Obrigado, Felipe Baby

A farewell collection of Massa's best Sidepodbits

Sidepodcast: Obrigado, Felipe Baby

by Christine

Felipe Massa is celebrating his final Brazilian Grand Prix this weekend, soaking in the love from his home fans, after announcing his retirement early in the season. Massa has spent 14 seasons in Formula One, racing for three different teams, and gathering a huge amount of support along the way. A much-loved member of the F1 paddock, he'll be missed when he hangs up his helmet in a few week's time. To celebrate the Brazilian drivers long career, I've gathered together some of his Sidepodcast highlights.
