At times, you wonder why other drivers bother going for pole position anymore - especially when it's a road or street circuit and Will Power is sitting patiently in his Penske. Yet on Saturday at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, there was an inclining that the Aussie might finally have been rumbled - the 29-year-old having smashed his primary car during the morning session. No matter - Power got into the back up car and put that on pole position instead. Simples.

This evening qualifying for the 2010 Honda IndyCar Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio takes place on the famous sports car course of Morrow County, Ohio. Although the track has been on the Indy Racing League or CART schedule for many years (bar a couple of lapses), it has never really become much of a fan favourite due to the difficulties passing can bring. . While the off track events and action can be absolutely marvellous - indeed Mid-Ohio rivals Spa-Francorchamps for festival appeal - the actual racing can occasionally leave one glazing over.

With the crashfest that was Toronto still relatively fresh in the memory, the IndyCar Series moves to the Canadian city of Edmonton for a run on the bumpy airport runways and taxi lanes. The 14-turn, 1.97 mile circuit offers the drivers one of the most physical contests on the calendar and at a length of 95 laps tomorrow, expect to see some falter. Indeed, Edmonton is a challenge that may leave some desperate for the hillier and scenic climbs of Mid-Ohio and Sonoma Raceway.

As the Indycar series rolls into Canada, Power leads the championship following a win two weeks ago at the Glen. Penske would have had 10 straight poles had they nabbed the top spot yesterday, but Justin Wilson rode in and said "I'm going to stick it to ya Roger" and snatched first place; however Power sits 2nd.

When Roland Ratzenberger hit the wall at Villeneuve corner at Imola on April 30th 1994, Formula 1 was left to face with its first competitive fatality since Ricardo Paletti at Montreal twelve years earlier. The sudden brutality of the accident fractured the base of Ratzenberger’s skull and sent shockwaves through an already nervous sport – Rubens Barrichello having crashed heavily the previous day at Variante Bassa, knocking him unconscious and breaking his nose.

Today sees the first of two qualifying days for the 2010 Indianapolis 500 - better known as Pole Day. The qualifying schedule has for this year, been greatly reduced by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway from four sessions in order to reduce the costs for both venue and the teams participating; however it is has had the additional effect of reshaping the process of qualification for the teams.
