A Live Tour of Albert Park

Published

By Christine Blachford

Here at Sidepodcast, we've just discovered the joys of Qik, and have been outside a couple of times to test it out. The Sidepodcommunity are way ahead of us though, and already doing exciting (and Formula 1 related) things. Amy took some time out this morning to take a walk round Albert Park, and it's really fascinating to see the track when it is not a track.

I should say that the audio is a little less than desirable as Amy braved a really windy day in the Park to capture these videos for us. It's worth listening and watching all of them, though, as Amy makes a great tour guide.

Start Line

A close up of the actual start line, with cars parked either side and a temporary chicane.

Turn 1 and 2

A run down to the first corner, with a different type of driver looking for the apex.

Kerbing

Cunningly camouflaged kerbing remains for the whole year round. You'd never know they raced here, honest!

Turn 4

The left-hander of turn 4 is actually a car park most of the year round. Which explains the white markings you see in many ariel shots of this section.

Turn 5

Back on to the main road for the following right hand section. A place where Kubica and Vettel managed to get all tangled up earlier in the year.

Turn 6

The heavy braking zone for turn 6 shows how regular traffic is managed when F1 isn't around.

Turn 7

No U-turns in this section of the road, and a look at the buildings the drivers could never see from the cockpit.

Turn 9

Another car park, shows off yet more F1 tyre markings, undisturbed since March.

Turns 11 and 12

Road markings show where the track runs across a wide section of road. A familiar skyline can seen in the background.

Lakeside Drive

The classic photo opportunity, where road cars run along race cars separated by the smallest of barriers.

Turn 13

The sharp right-hander of Ascari is clearly visible as it crosses the main section of road. Remember your green cross code when on foot here!

The First Ever Sidepodcast Pit Stop

The closed pit entrance, inaccessible to everyday traffic. Check out the garage frontage and pit boxes, complete with 2008 spec grooved tyre markings!

Finish Line!

Just before it gets too dark, a return to the start/finish line in all its chequered glory.

Thank you ever so much to Amy for live streaming her walk in the F1 park for us. It's rare to see Formula 1 tracks away from the race weekend, even more the street tracks that rarely see any other type of racing action.

Take a look yourself and let us know what landmarks you can spot, and any memories you have of the corners Amy visited in those videos. We loved watching every minute and if you need a reminder of how all the corners match up to the race track, check out last year's Inside Track guide.

Keep an eye on Amy and other commenters Qik stream's too. You never know what you may find.

Sidepodmeetup at Classic Team Lotus

Published

By Mr. C.

Seeing as the first Sidepodmeetup was such a fantastic success (or as some would have it, a little too successful), thoughts quickly turned to the next opportunity that the community might meet once more.

I think the idea of a Lotus factory visit was first mooted during a conversation in a London pub at the beginning of the year, but apparently the team's name came up during the BBC TV coverage this afternoon. Lotus may or may not be returning to F1 in the near future, but either way, we're planning a visit to the Classic Team Lotus workshop this September.

Lotus at Goodwood FOS

Top commenter Flibster has been charged with organising the event, meaning we don't know much about what a tour of the prestigious building might involve. However the company has a handy overview on it's website, and the pitch that explains it best reads:

Classic Team Lotus is the Works historic motor sport activity in the Lotus group of companies. The race shop is at Hethel in the same building from which Team Lotus operated in the late 60s and 70s.

The Team Lotus mechanics that supported Champions such as Ayrton Senna, Nigel Mansell, Mario Andretti, Emerson Fittipaldi, Graham Hill and Jim Clark continue to care for the World Championship winning Lotus F1 cars that won 77 Grand Prix.

That sounds like a pretty fabulous way to spend a day, doesn't it?

If we can get between 10 and 15 people to attend, the 9th September is the date for your diary, although if there is less interest it'll likely be the 2nd September. Both of these dates are Wednesdays, the race shop is located in Hethel, Norwich and there is a charge of £30 per person to visit.

As ever you'll find an obligatory wiki page open for anyone to register an interest, and Flibster will likely be able to fill you in on any questions you may have.

It would be great if we can meet even more F1 fans, and hopefully you'll join us for a live Sidepodchat in the park after the tour (apparently pubs are out of bounds this time around).

Audio preview

Wrapping up the year the best way we know how, with a collection of bizarre and not altogether meaningful awards from Sidepodcast. We also discuss the latest addition to the Sidepodtour, and there's a special Christmas treat for those listening to the end of the show.

Intro

It's a Sidepodparty - Drink!

Good Week / Bad Week

We turn the tables on our listeners, and find out why it's a good week for both Lou and R.G, but not so good for Dank and Scott.

Sidepoddies

The Sidepoddie Awards enter their second year, and become an annual tradition at Sidepodcast Towers, with a packed schedule of Best Accessory, Best Animal, and the Juan Pablo Montoya Award for Worst Injury Outside of a Formula 1 Car. The nominees and winners are about as good as the titles themselves.

Housekeeping

We took the next step of the Sidepodtour and turned up to the Williams Headquarters in Grove. Unfortunately there was no tour of the engineering works itself, but a simple peek at the Grand Prix Collection and Trophy room. Nevertheless, there was plenty to see and learn, with an impromptu visit from Sir Frank himself, an opportunity to shop, and a brand new love interest.

A show car being prepared in the Red Bull factory

This afternoon, thanks to a kind offer from Ian at Racing Bulls, I managed to tag along to a very lovely tour of the Red Bull F1 factory near Milton Keynes.

Myself and ten other fans, including Dan from The Red Bullog, all had what can only be described as an amazing day. I'm gutted that Christine couldn't be there, especially as she missed out on a second bite of Mark Webber at The Stag.

The team offered us a candid insight into the workings of their factory. We were allowed to take photographs (mostly) and I even came home with an RBR branded hat - suitable for all manner of killer podpanel questions.

There's way too much to talk about in a single post, but thankfully that's why we have a podcast. I have much to discuss this Sunday, and maybe we can twist Dan or Ian's arm to join us live too?
