Live: Bahrain 2010 - The Race

Published

By Christine Blachford

The first Grand Prix of 2010 is here and we are desperate to see what happens. Qualifying yesterday was great, so I can't wait to see what unfolds after such a great effort from Vettel and the two Ferrari boys.

Weather Update

So far, we've seen plenty of beautiful sunshine, really high temperatures, and quite a lot of dust as well. The track reached almost 50 degrees yesterday, and I'm expecting more of the same. Humidity looks lower than we've seen, but it's changeable.

One to Watch

Vettel is at the head of the grid and it's up to him to make the race his own. We have no idea what's going to happen in terms of strategy and tyre decisions, but with no refuelling, leading from the front is going to be a bonus.

Predictions Please

Who will get the first win of the year? Will there be any crashes? How will the first corner go down with 24 drivers heading for the same piece of track? Will there be any unexpected retirements? How will everyone handle the heat?

Old Man and Me

Published

By Mr. C.

Hypothetically speaking, imagine there were a seven times Formula 1 World Champion, who despite a career marred by controversy, opted to bow out at the top of his game. Imagine also, that in doing so he earned the respect of even his strongest critics, and that during his last appearance managed pull off the move of the race, putting a number on his replacement in the process.

A bad day at the office for the comeback kid.

A bad day at the office for the comeback kid.

Stretching reality to its limit, imagine that such a person would decide after almost three years away from the sport, to replace a sidelined ex-teammate in an awful car. Feigning injury would likely be the only way out of that situation, reputation still intact.

Imagine still, that such a person would then choose to make a season long comeback for the reigning World Champions, and in the first qualifying session of the year, manage only 7th position. Two whole places behind a teammate who nobody in the paddock rates highly and who's yet to achieve anything of note in his four year career. That kind of result could be painful to swallow for someone used to achieving so much.

Mind you, if such a situation had occurred, words could not describe how happy a certain person would be feeling right now.

Our second Digest episode for the Bahrain GP weekend takes a look at all three free practice sessions, plus a fabulous qualifying session. We compare the top ten to their teammates, and find out what the drivers think of their performance so far.

Free Practice

We saw the new teams struggle a little, particular poor Chandhok, whilst it really became clear that Rosberg was outshining Schumacher, and Ferrari and Red Bull were going to battle it out at the top.

Qualifying

Vettel was very strong as he posted his qualifying lap, whilst it was down to the Ferrari boys to try and challenge him. Webber could only manage 6th, and the McLaren drivers didn't fare as well as they'd hoped.

Team By Team

Most of the new teams are happy with their debut qualifying efforts, particularly Virgin who managed to get Glock the highest up the order. Chandhok's shakedown went successfully and he didn't get in anyone's way. Schumacher is satisfied with his comeback so far and Sutil celebrates being in the top ten.

Bahrain 2010 - Qualifying Highlights

Published

By Christine Blachford

The first qualifying of 2010 is complete, and it was quite the session. The slower teams were pretty far off the pace, but thankfully caused no significant problems. Towards the top, it was very tight. Full results are available, but here's what happened step by step.

Session Started:

13/03/2010 at 10:30 GMT

Session Ended:

13/03/2010 at 12:13 GMT

  • 10:30

Hello everyone, welcome back - qualifying is just 30 minutes away!

  • 10:30

The big news is that we were all wrong and Chandhok should be able to compete in qualifying, if he has the car to do so. The "three laps in practice" rule is correct, but qualifying counts as practice. @ManipeF1 called it as such hours ago.

  • 10:31

Some weather info from @H_Kovalainen: Wind has made conditions different today, quite normal for #Bahrain, affecting braking, tailwind more difficult, headwind feels great!!

  • 10:32

Lotus setting sights high, @MikeGascoyne: Need a good performance from both drivers and the whole team to qualify as best new team

  • 10:34

Martin Brundle on quali: "We'll lose seven drivers in the first part of qualifying and we should know who those will be in Bahrain. In the past, we've seen some grandees fall out in Q1 but that shouldn't happen this time. Q2 should be super busy. Ringers like Force India and Sauber appear to have a seriously good turn of speed so we might see some shocks."

  • 10:35

    The BBC online coverage: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8564532.stm

  • 10:43

Chandhok is philosophical about going out in quali. He says the expectations are less, he's just getting experience, even as far as just checking the seat works. He wants to keep out of everyone's way.

  • 10:45

Autosport Live is now... live: http://live.autosport.com/commentary.php/id/190

  • 10:49

From BBC Live: Did you know that since the Bahrain Grand Prix started in 2004, every driver that claimed pole after qualifying finished on the podium on race day? Great stat that.

  • 10:49

From @MikeGascoyne: 10 mins to go to qualifying. Due to the long lap will be just 2 runs in Q1, both on the softer tyre

  • 10:52

From @ToroRossoSpy: Jaime pays 400 euros for speeding in pit lane this morning. Just 1.2 km/h over limit. Ouch!

  • 10:54

Ferrari not confident? @InsideFerrari: Engines are warming up. Few minutes to the start of quali session. It will be very tight and difficult...

  • 10:57

    Track temperature - 47. Air temperature - 34. Humidity 8%.

  • 10:58

From @rf1paddockpass: Cars are ready to go, final fire ups underway and the drivers are strapped in. This is where it gets really interesting...

  • 10:59

    Heikki in the car: http://twitpic.com/18amdb

  • 11:01

Ferrari reply: "We`realistic...." @InsideFerrari Good to hear!

  • 11:01

Session begins. Glock and di Grassi out on track.

  • 11:02

From @EliGP: No prizes for guessing which six drivers will be out in Q1, but who will be the seventh...

  • 11:03

No one in a major hurry to get out on track, despite the fact the lap will take longer and traffic is going to be an issue.

  • 11:05

Di Grassi sets the first time of the session: 2:02.131, swiftly beaten by Glock by an entire second.

  • 11:06

Alonso puts in the first realistic time: 1:55.972 for Ferrari.

  • 11:07

Only two cars not out on track = Vettel and Webber.

  • 11:07

That means Chandhok is out there somewhere.

  • 11:11

    Karun's first time: 2:21.793. Eek!

  • 11:11

On McLaren radio, Button says: "Getting traffic at the end of the lap was a problem." Then: "Did people find time on their second lap?"

  • 11:13

McLaren replied: "Some people have found time on their second lap but it's not a lot."

  • 11:13

Chandhok improves to a 2:08.424. From 21 seconds off the pace to 13.

  • 11:14

Only six drivers out on track right now, top three Massa, Vettel, Webber.

  • 11:14

Kubica is complaining of too much understeer in the middle of the corner.

  • 11:15

To confirm that, @rf1paddockpass: Vitaly P12 after his first soft tyre run. Balance a bit understeery but seems reasonable. More understeer.

  • 11:17

The bottom seven at the moment: Kobayashi, Trulli, Glock, Kovalainen, Di Grassi, Senna, Chandhok.

  • 11:17

David Croft on 5live saying only Kobayashi has a genuine chance of getting out of the bottom seven.

  • 11:18

Top four are in the pits, job done. Vettel, Webber, Massa and Rosberg.

  • 11:19

    Alonso up in P1.

  • 11:20

Kobayashi has not yet improved from 18th. Chandhok has returned to the pitlane.

  • 11:20

Senna in pits, not Chandhok. Apologies.

  • 11:20

Kobayashi moves up to 15th, dropping de la Rosa into the drop zone.

  • 11:21

De la Rosa improves to 15th, dropping Alguersuari down into 15th.

  • 11:21

    18th!

  • 11:22

    Fastest three: Alonso, Vettel, Sutil.

Dropping out: Alguersuari, Glock, Trulli, Kovalainen, Di Grassi, Senna, Chandhok.

  • 11:22

Chandhok finished the session 10 seconds off the pace.

  • 11:23

From @VirginRacing: Best qualifying of the new teams. Fantastic job guys! :-)))

  • 11:24

It looks as though Alguersuari did really badly, but @ManipeF1: Alg made a mistake in S2 on his final lap.

  • 11:27

Q2 gets underway with Vettel out first, followed by Buemi.

  • 11:28

Comment from Mr C: "Q2 is probably the important important session of the weekend. no red flags in Q1 either."

  • 11:29

From BBC Live, Sir Jackie Stewart: "The most impressive driver in that session for me was Adrian Sutil, he has done very well to be in third..." As spotted by Iain.

  • 11:31

All out on track bar Kobayashi and de la Rosa.

  • 11:32

The Saubers have joined the pack - everyone out on track.

  • 11:33

Vettel has returned to the pits from P1 - a 1:54.035.

  • 11:35

From @Jamesallenonf1: We've already learned that the s/soft tyre is at least 1/2 sec faster than medium, but remember top 10 must race tyre they qualify on

  • 11:36

All back in the pits bar DLR, KOB, PET.

  • 11:36

Button on McLaren radio: "The tyres lasted better than they did this morning."

  • 11:37

Hamilton on McLaren radio: "Car is sliding around a bit, it's very hot for the tyres."

  • 11:37

    All cars in the pits.

  • 11:38

    Renault hard at work: http://twitpic.com/18asal

  • 11:38

Bottom seven at the moment, ahead of the final rush: Button, Liuzzi, Hulkenberg, De la Rosa, Kobayashi, Petrov, Buemi.

  • 11:40

Buemi heads up this second wave of cars, followed by Sutil. It looks like the last man out was Barrichello, behind Massa.

  • 11:42

Barrichello is just about to cross the line to start his final flying lap. Does he make it? With about five seconds to go!

  • 11:42

Liuzzi not improved, will drop out.

  • 11:43

Button into the top ten... tenth.

  • 11:44

Fastest three - Vettel, Alonso, Webber.

Dropping out - Barrichello, Liuzzi, Hulkenberg, De la Rosa, Buemi, Kobayashi, Petrov.

  • 11:45

Kubica gets into the top ten - currently 7th. Petrov way down in 17th.

  • 11:48

From @autosportlive: A very difficult decision for the race engineers now - do they go for pace on the softer tyres or race durability on the harder choice.

  • 11:49

Hamilton on the radio: "Can I get an overlay of my times so I can see where I can improve."

  • 11:49

McLaren response: "Printing one out for you now, Lewis."

  • 11:50

    Green light.

  • 11:50

Massa out first, followed by Alonso.

  • 11:51

From @InsideFerrari: For sure an improvement compared to last year` qualis...:-))

  • 11:51

From @rf1paddockpass: Great job from Bobby K and more to come hopefully with a few tweaks to the balance.

  • 11:52

Massa and Alonso on the super-soft compound.

  • 11:53

From @eddstrawF1: Rosberg has been outpacing Schuey all weekend at Mercedes. Looking good to do it when it really counts in Q3.

  • 11:54

Alonso beats Massa, Hamilton in third.

  • 11:56

Sutil leaves the pitlane. Massa returns.

  • 11:56

Button didn't set a lap time.

  • 11:57

With Chandhok making his F1 debut in qualifying, and the idea of traffic presenting a bit of a problem, Q3 was a busy session. Q2 was the fast session, whilst Q1 saw the shootout for pole, and it was Vettel who got the glory.

Live: Bahrain 2010 - Qualifying

Published

By Christine Blachford

Morning Practice was fascinating, as we watched a wheel fall of Glock's car, Chandhok have to wait and wait and wait, and Hamilton have to give up before the real qualifying setups began. If qualifying is up to its usual standard, we're in for a good one.

Weather Update

In continuing tradition, the weather will be hot and sunny. The temperatures go up and up, and with qualifying on at the same time as FP2, expect the track to hit the 40s pretty quickly. The humidity is lower today, though, although it seems just as dusty.

One to Watch

I don't know about anyone else, but I am keeping firmly glued to Nico's progress. So far he has outshone Michael in all sessions, and if he outqualifies Schumi, there's going to be a riot down in the Mercedes garage. It looks very likely this might happen, too!

Predictions Please

Who will get the glory of the first pole position of the year? Will Rosberg outqualify Schumi? Will drivers find themselves tripping over those new and slow cars? Will there be any surprises in the top ten?

Formula One has returned! We are gearing up for the first race of the season and by all accounts, it's going to be a spectacular one. Although Bahrain has a lot to live up to, replacing Australia as the season opener, there is so much going on, it's bound to be a fantastic weekend.

The Weather

The long range forecast for the weekend suggests there will be nothing but sunshine for F1 to look forward too. Saturday might see a little cloud, but nothing that should make a difference to the action and the high appears consistent for both Saturday and Sunday.

Regularly updated weather information can be found on the BBC.

The Circuit

This year, the Bahrain circuit sees the first major change to its layout since it began hosting F1 races in 2004. The track has been extended by nine corners and the number of laps reduced accordingly.

Friday Fun - Where Would You Award Points?

Published

By Christine Blachford

With the possibility revealed this week that there could be an extra point awarded for qualifying on pole position, we began to wonder what else you could award points for. Nick had a couple of ideas:

If they are giving a point for fastest lap to the driver, then why not one to the team with the fastest pitstop?

Although i think the whole thing is very mickey mouse.

What next?
Point for the most dramatic gesture on the pit wall?
Point for the biggest tyre lock up?
Point for the most sideways moment?
Point for the biggest crash?
Point for the cleanest car at the end of the race?

These are some good ideas, but I reckon there are more out there. What do you think points should be awarded for?

F1 Advent Calendar 2009 - Day Twenty-Three

By Christine Blachford

Sidepodcast mini-series logo

This is the F1 Advent Calendar 2009, welcome. We are running through the 2009 season in short bite size chunks, peeking behind each door of advent for a new story of the year. We're moving on to Day Twenty-Three - While You Wait.

When the teams and drivers turned up to the Brazil paddock, ready to get on with another weekend of racing, the pressure was high. Vettel's win in Japan had saved his championship challenge, but he would have a real fight back on his hands if he were to make it stick.

Qualifying was going to be crucial, so the fact that it was raining on Saturday afternoon put a bit of a spanner in the works. All the cars were out early in the first session to try and get a banker lap done and dusted. However, just a few minutes in Fisichella spun and stalled, meaning a red flag came out. The Ferrari was recovered, and the teams were ready to get going again. Just seven drivers had a time on the board, but it was raining hard now. The FIA said conditions weren't suitable for running, and there was a sizeable delay until things improved.

When the session did get going, Rosberg was the fastest driver out there, whilst both Vettel and Hamilton were knocked out. Vettel was not at all happy, storming out of the car and even throwing his steering wheel out of the cockpit. He had plenty of time to rant and rave though, as the second session was delayed, again due to the weather.

After a couple of minutes of action, Liuzzi was into the barriers. Another red flag. His was a pretty serious accident, but the Force India driver escaped unharmed. By this time, the rain was really coming down, and although the red flag was thrown initially to clear the track debris, it turned into another weather watch. Everyone had to sit and wait for the conditions to improve, and every ten minutes or so, the medical car did a tour of the track to assess the situation.

Some of the drivers remained in their cars, whilst others climbed out and sat about the garage, talking to their engineers and messing about to pass the time. There was a lot of time to pass, though. If we thought the Q1 delay was big, that was nothing compared to this. We had to wait a whopping 75 minutes for the session to get going again. Waiting, watching, crossing our fingers that the something would happen. The sky was was getting darker and darker, and the completion of qualifying wasn't a sure thing.

Eventually the action got underway, with 12 minutes of the second session still to run. Rosberg was fastest once again, whilst Button dropped out early - another big name out before the top ten shootout. This seemed to be a disaster for his championship challenge and afterwards he admitted he was very disappointed. Ross Brawn even said that they would be happy with a last race championship decider, if it came to that, but only if it was both his drivers in the fight for the title. Barrichello did the best he could to make that come true, as when the third and final part of qualifying got underway - without delay this time - he and Webber were trading places at the top. It was the Brazillian driver who finally took pole position at his home circuit. Webber was behind in second and Sutil third in the Force India.

Altogether, qualifying had taken 2 hours and 41 minutes - making it the longest qualifying session ever. The BBC coverage overran by half an hour and they were forced to switch it to a sister channel. During the delay, Red Bull boss Christian Horner said they were all happy to wait it out as they weren't on a deadline. You can bet Bernie was thinking differently though.

That's all for this episode of our F1 Advent Calendar 2009. Tomorrow is our penultimate show, and we're drawing towards the end of the season, so join me then for Day Twenty-Four.
