F1 Digest 2009 - Monaco GP

The Monaco Grand Prix wasn't the thrill a minute it could have been, but it wasn't the worst race we've seen either. Plenty of drivers found their way into the barriers but only one could take the chequered flag first.

The Race

There were no incidents until the tenth lap of the raced which surprised as all, but as soon as that happened, it opened the floodgates for more. In the end, we saw six retirees.

Team by Team

Ferrari are buoyed by their progress and think they are moving up the order in terms of competitive teams, whilst Brawn are over the moon, but Toyota and BMW are thinking hard about what went wrong.

This week we discuss all things Monaco, including the budget cap meetings held on various yachts throughout the weekend. We also update Fantasy Racers, share some great feedback, and discuss the next character cup.

Intro

Yet another shout out but we might have to change our name.

Good Week / Bad Week

Good week for France as they might have another option for the race, whilst Button thinks he might be boring. A bad week for potential excuses for leaving F1 and for England event hosting.

News and Views

Ferrari lost their court case, and the teams gathered for several discussions throughout the weekend. Max seems to think all is heading in the right direction.

The Race

The cleanest first lap we've ever seen, and not exactly the chaotic Monaco GP we were expecting. However, Brawn have shown they are just supreme, whilst Toyota and BMW must be scratching their heads.

Fantasy Racers

I'm now at 91st whilst Mr C sits in 287th. Kathi is running away with it and we discuss how dedicated one has to be to get anywhere in the FR game.

Feedback

A couple of emails - one on Fantasy Racers and one on what Mr C might look like. Also a quick plug for a new blog.

Housekeeping

The Circuit Character Cup gets underway tomorrow, we announce the Tremayning winner, clarify what's going on with Joe, and discuss how much fun the Parade Lap is.

Live: We're Going Up Against the Indy 500

There's some kind of racing going on that isn't F1 and doesn't involve Franck. Apologies if we are making you choose between the two, but there's plenty to discuss in this week's F1 Debrief.

There's no Tremayning this week, but I hope you'll all still join us in the comments and have your say about the things on the agenda this week. Unfortunately that is still budget caps, but also the Monaco race and a little bit of feedback as well.

We're aiming for a 7pm BST start, although thinking about it... we're going to be late, for sure! We'll be ready as soon as possible, though, so stay tuned, and I'll see you then!

Live: Monaco - The Race

With Vettel running light, Brawn running strong, and Kubica running... seemingly to the end of the earth with his fuel load, there is plenty to behold today.

Weather Update

It looks like the rain we might have seen this weekend has been pushed back until Tuesday, making for a nice sunny day in Monaco. Good for the spectators, perhaps not for the racing action.

One to Watch

Lewis Hamilton is attempting to come through the field from the very, very back. A light strategy on a track with little overtaking is going to be tough, but he loves it round there, and can only move forward.

Predictions Please

Who will win? Who will join them on the podium? Will we see any more crashes or have the barriers seen all their victims for this weekend? Will the one stop strategies work? How far forward will Lewis make it?

The Parade Lap is back and this time we're celebrating everything cliché as we get you started on this Monaco Grand Prix morning. You may find the odd mention of F1 but with our guest host Alex from SofaF1 joining us, chances are it will be all about the music and the giggles.

We Tremayned on the Debrief last week, so stay tuned to find out what games we can create in this next hour that will also become a Sidepodwide phenomenon.

We'll be going live at 11:10 BST, and we're scheduled to run for an hour, but we promise not to spill over into the BBC coverage.

Monaco qualifying is one of the most important, as overtaking can be tough. Listen to today's F1 Digest to find out who met with the barriers, and who managed to avoid trouble.

Free Practice 3

Alonso was the fastest driver in FP3, whilst both Toyota and BMW drivers were struggling to drag themselves off the bottom of the timesheets. Would this carry forward to Qualifying?

Qualifying

The answer is yes, as neither BMW nor Toyota made it out of Q1, dropping out with Hamilton. Button regained pole position, and it's onwards to the race we go.

Team By Team

It's good news for Force India and Toro Rosso as they are benefitting from other teams misfortune. Some drivers are lamenting the traffic out on the circuit, but nearly all are looking forward to the race.

Hamilton crashed at Mirabeau which ruined his qualifying session completely. Button took pole position, with Raikkonen lining up beside him in second.
