Virgin Group bidding for Honda F1? // A new name enters the frame for ownership of the Brackley team

Published by Mr. C

Lucky Taku

James Allen speculated on Monday that the Virgin brand might be linked to a Honda F1 buyout. This morning according to Reuters, an unidentified source close to the Japanese manufacturer has stated: "They have made a bid to purchase the team."

A spokeswoman for Branson declined to comment, with the same noises coming from Honda's direction.

As with any F1 rumours, nothing is confirmed until it's in writing, and even then you should consider it suspect. However, with Reuters running the story we have a pretty good indication a bid has been put forward. Although where this leaves Nick Fry and Ross Brawn and their management buyout is anyone's guess.

Reuters have not been able to confirm if the rumours linking former BAR man Adrian Reynard to the project are correct, although yesterday Grandprix.com pointed out that Reynard still owns land on which the team's factories are built, and possibly a building or two.

Additionally Takuma Sato, the driver that simply won't give up, gets a mention the in Reuters release, due his close association with Virgin Atlantic Japan. Could we yet see the man return to the grid in 2009, despite being pipped to the Toro Rosso seat by Bourdais?

Please do let us know what you make of it all in the comments. The Honda saga isn't going to end quickly - is Branson serious, will we see more of Reynard and would you like to see a Button / Sato line-up once again?

  • i guess if this story turns out to be true, then pitpass were bit wide of the mark:

That's the boring way surely, you have to wait until someone gives you an offer, then it shows you are not panicking and freting you don't have a buyer.

  • Isn't Reuters the same news org that:

    1. Reported the Carlos Slim rumor that turned out to be false?

    2. Reported speculation about Ralf Schumacher, which turned out to be unlikely at best? It was rumored that Willi Weber nudged them along - this was when Ralf was driving for Williams and Reuters was one of their sponsors.

    nope?

That was some Italian news company which said 'was reliable'

i'll put it this way, i'd rather he didn't drive in f1 atm.... not with the big front wings... not when he would be racing on the same track as jenson....

  • nope?

Who did that, then? I'm sure one of the mainstream agencies did it.

no idea. do you have a link?

I'll have to look for it - this happened a long time ago! This was in around 2003 or 2004.

  • That was some Italian news company which said ‘was reliable’

yeah, crossed them of the reliable list. although people will sometimes make a mistake. no-one though, can be as unreliable as gmm... even if they were doing it it deliberately.

Pfft, Sato is nearly at Jenson levels of awesomeness in my book.

  • Doesn’t that beard tickle?

sigh, might as well watch Boots N All then.

  • 'tis spreading like wildfire now

    Telegraph are saying

Telegraph Sport last week reported that Honda could accept a bid from an unnamed third party, quoting a source within Honda who described the company as "reputable, with deep pockets and a brand image known throughout the world. F1 would do well to have them on board"..

  • I like this comment from James Allen's blog

I read today that Roman Abramovich is spending $342 a minute on Chelsea. Maybe he can cut that back to $200 a minute and buy Honda as well…

  • I like this comment from James Allen’s blog

Possible, with him looking more and more bored with Chelski, wouldn't be surprised if he does pull it out and go do summit fun, say, buy a f1 team.

though looking at current economic climates, i think he's down to 13th in the rich list, so that may be a benifacor.

  • I like this comment from James Allen’s blog

    that's brilliant :)

  • obviously that should say benifactor.

But he's spending more than that - he has to pay off Scolari, then pay for Hiddink - and he's also paying the bills for the Russian team!

  • Possible, with him looking more and more bored with Chelski, wouldn’t be surprised if he does pull it out and go do summit fun, say, buy a f1 team.

Almost word for word in some places.

    Am still not buying it...

  • Can I just please post one news story without you lot bringing GMM up?

yes of course, can you see what we're saying in this instance?

read the post we wrote in the small hours of this morning, and then read the f1-live article. it's the same words written in a different way.

there's nothing new and just because it's published on f1-live, doesn't make it any more factual, does it?

  • Can I just please post one news story without you lot bringing GMM up?

actually, it's likely i'll always draw attention to any gmm based story, until such time they become a better and more trustworthy source of information.

will that ever happen? probably not, and therefore we'll keep advising not to link to articles sourced from them.

apart from anything else, it hardly encourages f1-live to stop paying for the service if stories provide such good link-bait does it?

please don't take it personally though.

  • yes of course, can you see what we’re saying in this instance?

so when i said "yes" i meant "no". a life in politics beckons methinks.

  • so when i said “yes” i meant “no”. a life in politics beckons methinks.

Well, the answer should be: Of course you can, if it's not from GMM. If it is, we'll call it out.

Best thing to do, if you find a GMM story interesting, find the source story instead.

  • Best thing to do, if you find a GMM story interesting, find the source story instead.

    oooh, good advice.

  • Best thing to do, if you find a GMM story interesting, find the source story instead.

    For example:

Virgin Group in talks for Honda F1 team - Reuters F1

I think one should always check for another source where GMM is involved.

  • there’s nothing new and just because it’s published on f1-live, doesn’t make it any more factual, does it?

Quite. After all, Mr Maitland's response t'other week to our criticisms (to paraphrase: "If you don't like my output, don't visit those sites") was outright nonsense and cant. It didn't address the issue that by syndication GMM's cut-and-pasted non-stories appear practically everywhere, conning plenty of people into believing that they deliver some profound truth and rendering his claptrap practically unavoidable. It's like pumping raw sewage into the sea and then saying "If you don't want a mouthful of s--t, don't go for a swim."

In other news, I'm not massively convinced about Virgin per se. If you look at what Richard Branson has done, he made an awful lot of money off Tubular Bells in the 1970s and has been living off the Virgin 'brand' since then. If you look at the businesses with the Virgin name, most of them – the successful ones – aren't even owned by him. He just started them up and then flogged them on. Virgin Atlantic? Majority owned by Singapore Airlines. Etc... About the only things he owns at the moment are the trains and the broadband!

  • I think one should always check for another source where GMM is involved.

After all, they never trouble themselves to! I wonder what the medical term is for fear of the telephone...

Virgin Records was also pretty successful when he was still owning it.

  • About the only things he owns at the moment are the trains and the broadband!

it's the fastest broadband in the country though. honda could do worse :)

  • After all, they never trouble themselves to! I wonder what the medical term is for fear of the telephone…

    :D

  • it’s the fastest broadband in the country though. honda could do worse

I kinda hate to admit it but Virgin Media have raised the quality of the Ntl service (previous guise) immensely since promising to deliver on Customer Service and Product Improvements

  • I dunno - I’d prefer it if Dicky Branson was involved rather than some anonymous russian financial folk with no obvious interest or passion except for making money.

me too. he makes train that tilt as they corner right? could be some f1 innovation in the pipeline.

  • I pray Sato isn't put back into F1, for the love of god please no!!

  • I pray Sato isn’t put back into F1, for the love of god please no!!

Sato is a waste of a seat IMO. It's tragic that we still have an F1 where drivers like him get a chance ahead of much more talented drivers. I know that's the way it works but I don't have to like it...

Good point, you get the jist though

When will this never ending saga...erm end?!!

  • One other thing about the Sato link with Virgin Atlantic; it may in any case be just a 'contra' in which he gets free flights/upgrades in exchange for doing the occasional endorsement (brings to mind the amusing yarn about when D. Beckham's 'people' phoned Ducati to blag a free 996, but warned that he wouldn't necessarily endorse the product; Ducati, bless 'em, said "In that case he can buy one like anybody else...").

Virgin Atlantic have one of the best loyalty schemes. Back in the days when I had to go and do lots of presentations in Japan I'd accrue enough miles on the way out to upgrade myself on the way back; Taku was occasionally on the same flight. Not that he came to the bar for a few glasses of the red tranquilising juice, though.

  • (brings to mind the amusing yarn about when D. Beckham’s ‘people’ phoned Ducati to blag a free 996, but warned that he wouldn’t necessarily endorse the product; Ducati, bless ‘em, said “In that case he can buy one like anybody else…”).

All that money and still couldn't buy one? Ah well probably needed to hold on to his money to buy all those male grooming products.

Is Sato basically only good for sponsorship?!

Malaysia 2004. Reuters said that Ralf Schumacher's move to Renault was "a formality". F1 Racing mentioned this in passing while discussing Ralf's options for 2005 in an article in the July 2004 issue.

Abramovich's reign at Chelsea has been pretty good - 2 titles. While it was Mourinho's coaching that played the biggest role there, Abramovich paid for his salary.

  • Is Sato basically only good for sponsorship?! {Comment #88}

Takuma was at Autosport in 2007 and did a really good job of the interviews and autograph signing sessions - he looked like he could have happily spent the whole day just meeting people. So I think he'd be good at the PR side as well.

Come to think of it, ex-Honda would do very well to put him in as a secondary test driver and give him lots of demo runs round the world to do. While I think he is F1-level, there aren't really enough race seats to accommodate him as a racer :(

  • Abramovich’s reign at Chelsea has been pretty good - 2 titles. While it was Mourinho’s coaching that played the biggest role there, Abramovich paid for his salary.

To be fair, it is rumoured that Reuter's source was Willi Weber or someone in his management company, so it's not as if they made the rumour out of thin air. It just happened that Ralf's management were trying to negotiate a big salary with the aid of such stories (and succeeded).

A journalist is as accurate as his or her sources.

If you look at what Richard Branson has done, he made an awful lot of money off Tubular Bells in the 1970s and has been living off the Virgin ‘brand’ since then. If you look at the businesses with the Virgin name, most of them – the successful ones – aren’t even owned by him. He just started them up and then flogged them on. Virgin Atlantic? Majority owned by Singapore Airlines. Etc… About the only things he owns at the moment are the trains and the broadband!

The guy started with nothing and is worth a billion or two. He must have done something right. Even if he only buys Honda and stops Fry getting control that would be a bonus. If he then sells it on to someone else who makes a success of it as he has done with other businesses I am sure he would make a few people happy.

  • A man that was given a 95% successful company and still manages to F it up.

The man took a good F1 team and almost managed to buy it for a dollar. There are many ways to interpret success.

  • To be fair, it is rumoured that Reuter’s source was Willi Weber or someone in his management company, so it’s not as if they made the rumour out of thin air. It just happened that Ralf’s management were trying to negotiate a big salary with the aid of such stories (and succeeded).

It's not like Willi Weber never told a lie. I remember him telling EJ that Michael Schumacher was a Spa expert when he had never seen the place.

  • I'm working on my own little possible Virgin livery. getting a bland default car from the Earth Dreams livery took a lot of patience but as you can see here i'm starting to get somewhere!

probably not the best time to remind you, but they ran a white livery during off season testing before last year ;) looks great so far though :) i'm looking forward to see what you come up with :)

I thought I recognised it from somewhere.

Livery is great, wouldn't mind it at all, mainly cos the only white bits are the sponsors.

that looks great. good job Maverick. I'm gonna have to have a go later i think. but first must do this essay (i hate homework over 1/2 term).

  • There should be some white cars in drop.io or on sdepodcast from when we did livery designs and designs for Jenson's helmet. Best of luck finding them though because that must have been 6 months ago.

Getting it from this was challenging enough and it's not as good as the other guys, which are just superb but ehh, it kept me busy :)

Obvously just now they are skiving so it may take a few minutes.

Shame they still don't allow brush skirt like the Lotus 78 had.

  • I remember him telling EJ that Michael Schumacher was a Spa expert when he had never seen the place. {Comment #132}

I've heard two other versions, whereby Michael had been there but only as a spectator/on a bicycle (in the latter rumour, the bike ride was prompted purely by the potential Jordan drive). Though I could certainly believe a version whereby Michael was completely new to the place.

The one thing I do know is that Weber implied that Schumacher knew the track well from a car racing perspective, which he certainly did not.

    :D

  • Is that a beard on the car?!?

If so, how long before Nick Heidfeld gets an approach?

  • I am shocked people are cheating. That's my job. You turn your back for a second and someone nicks it. :D

I noticed this but decided to ignore it so I only managed three despite a lot of effort.

  • As you can probably tell I'm procrastinating, but the idea of beardy branston in F1 is strangely apealing, so here's another shot at a VirginF1 livery

I just saw that and linked to it but my comment disappeared. Nice pic. Shame Williams couldn't put a deal together to run that branding.
