Video 23 - F1 Rewind (Pilot) // The pilot edition of a new concept in F1 video from Sidepodcast

Published by Christine Blachford

It's a new year, so a good time to pilot our latest video idea. It's a concept for a show that we've been kicking around for a while now, and finally decided the time was right to pull it all together. A weird decision, given it's all about Formula 1 news and there's very little around at the moment.

Anyway, as a pilot, the emphasis is on you guys to let us know what you think, and whether it's worth the bandwidth it consumes. Also as a pilot, it is obviously new and may face tweaks at any moment - like the fact that I called it a weekly show, which may have been a little bit hasty.

Either way, the important thing for now is to watch, soak up the F1 vibe and share your opinion.

  • Well, obviously I like the idea of a (weekly) F1 news podcast.

Not only an opportunity for F1 fans to keep up to date in an easy manner, I also think this concept itself is quite unique as nobody that I know of provides such a service.

If I were you I would consider posting these shows outside of your own websites though, if you want your brand to catch on. But I'm sure you've thought of that yourself already. :)

So I'd say go for it, and see which format (weekly, bi-weekly,...) suits you best. I'm pretty sure it will catch on!

  • I have a question I forgot to include in my post.

I seem to have some trouble watching your recent videos, as they don't play fluently. I suspect it's my using an oldish pc, but then again I've never had any problems watching your race previews.

Could this have something to do with the latest codecs or something along those lines?

    Cheers,

    Michael

  • I seem to have some trouble watching your recent videos, as they don’t play fluently. I suspect it’s my using an oldish pc, but then again I’ve never had any problems watching your race previews.

    quite possibly.

are you watching them on this site, or downloading to a podcast client like iTunes?

the thing we've introduced on this site is the fullscreen button, which allows videos to fill your whole screen. as you'd imagine, bigger videos mean bigger files, so the videos now take longer to download and take more processing power to display.

however, we don't want to leave anyone out, so we still upload our videos to Dailymotion, blip.tv and YouTube. videos on these sites are more compact and should play smoothly.

please let us know if that helps at all?

  • I like the idea and content, although not sure about the "newsroom" look with the laptop etc. Weird I know, but I also found the mug in the background distracting! - Did the sidepodcast cleaner have the week off during Christmas?

  • Christine,

I stumbled across sidepodcast.tv halfway through the F1 season last year and have been hooked ever since. Being in the US there is a large dearth of F1 news available in my normal channels.

I like the new Rewind show idea and hope to see more of it. I have always liked your soft-stated commentary and will enjoy much more of the same. I am sure that you will tweak as you feel it is needed and really have no helpful comments at all.

    Cheers,

    Bob

  • This is a great idea for a show. And I really like the new intro titles - very cool.

With regards to reviewing formula one websites, I feel it would be best to concentrate on the less-well-known blogs and news sites, which offer can offer an interesting (sometimes alternative) view on events. I suspect that most viewers are already very familiar with the mainstream offerings, as they show up on the first few pages of Google search results, and are generally pretty easy to navigate.

It may be worth providing an overview of sites like Autosport, F1 Live, etc., but they don't differentiate enough from each other to make individual reviews worthwhile, in my opinion.

  • but I also found the mug in the background distracting! - Did the sidepodcast cleaner have the week off during Christmas?

    you mean the sidepodcast mug?

the reason we're not using the green screen for this show, is it takes forever to edit and render. using a real background speeds up the process considerably. we can change what's there though.

i was wondering if having christine standing might be a good idea? we'd have to find a taller desk though.

the laptop is actually hiding the 'autocue' scroll wheel (which christine is operating with her right hand), so it might have to stay:

  • I feel it would be best to concentrate on the less-well-known blogs and news sites

we can certainly do that :)

  • I like the idea of the show and didn't find the mug a distraction. What sensitive viewers you have.

Given the number of shows you will do over a season you should be able to cover a huge range of websites so I don't think it would be a good idea to limit yourself to certain categories.

  • Christine,

I like the new show, casting from the sofa relaxes matters a little.

The one available from the web site worked fine for me but the Itunes download didn't play correctly: with voice out of synch after about a minute and worsening.

I've not come across that on Itunes so far, so I'm just reporting. Redownloaded it, and it still was out of synch. I'll have another go tomorrow morning and report.

  • I like the idea of the show and didn’t find the mug a distraction. What sensitive viewers you have.

It was a tongue in cheek comment - mainly 'coz everything else is so professional looking I couldn't think of anything else to say.

Also didn't realise it was a bit of strategic product placement!! I do like the car btw!

Fair point about the green screen - the set is not really an issue - its the content and presenting style that counts & I reckon that is spot on.

thanks for the heads up. we had an email earlier today, with someone having a similar issue. i can't repeat the problem, but we're going re-export and re-upload the whole shebang later this evening (takes a couple of hours), to see if that helps.

will let you know once it's complete.

not a problem, i can see what you mean about the background and we're always open to criticism. you can't please everyone, but that won't stop us from trying!

Also didn’t realise it was a bit of strategic product placement!!

in that case it wasn't very successful :) we'll try harder next time.

  • Given the number of shows you will do over a season you should be able to cover a huge range of websites so I don’t think it would be a good idea to limit yourself to certain categories.

also a good point, but i'm hoping that more independent f1 sites will appear throughout the year.

  • are you watching them on this site, or downloading to a podcast client like iTunes?

I watch your videos on this site, or at least I try to :p

however, we don’t want to leave anyone out, so we still upload our videos to Dailymotion, blip.tv and YouTube. videos on these sites are more compact and should play smoothly.

YouTube is fine for me :)

  • YouTube is fine for me

good stuff, thanks for that. apologies that you can't view them properly here.

when we get a minute, we could probably add a "hi-res / low-res" option so that viewers can customise the viewing experience.

not sure how difficult that will be, but worth trying methinks.

  • but we’re going re-export and re-upload the whole shebang later this evening

okay, file now uploaded again. if you were having issues before, please could you try download a second time to see if this helps at all?

    cheers.

for those interested in what changed with this video versus all the others, here's a geeky explanation. if you've no interest in the techy details, please move right along :)

    <begin geeky explanation/>

we encode all of our videos into h.264 format. this is a good idea because that happens to be the iPod's format of choice. however, we encode at the videos native resolution (720x404), and sadly that's too large for the little pod screen. so we then export again into iPod format using quicktime pro.

at this point things start to go awry because for some unknown reason this process appears to brighten the video. usually it's only a subtle change but it does appear to be getting more extreme. as an experiment, this week we decided to use VisualHub to do the job instead.

the hub did its job well, the video encoded to the right size and the colour was an accurate representation of the original video and it played on the iPod. hallelujah.

    so we uploaded it.

then we get a couple of messages saying all was not well.

because we can't repeat the issue, we've gone back to the old way for the time being. and in order to stop the unwanted washed-out effect, we've had to artificially darken the whole video first.

this is patently a complete waste of our time, so we're looking into it. we're not the only ones suffering either. why this video should be much worse than the others is unclear, and why VisualHub only causes issues in certain players is also a mystery.

still hopefully all should be well for the time being :)

    <end geeky explanation/>

  • I am always accused of being contrary - but I really liked the informal (homely) setting with the laptop in front (good to see you promoting Macs) and the corporate coffee mug in the background - it made it personal and inviting. Sidepodcast videos are always professional (the only slip-up I remembered were the hand gestures in Xmas message - but actually its quite funny and we all learn from these - love to see Christine doing a sign language podcast). Keep the good work up - but get some sleep - I cannot image how much time was spent on all of this upgrade!

  • I cannot image how much time was spent on all of this upgrade!

i think the word would probably be "enough"

    :)

  • just wanted to point peeps in the direction of shaun's post:

    Weekly F1 TV podcast program

the response regarding this show has been amazing, thank you all.

  • Just watched your new news show - good idea I'm a pretty lazy F1 fan so having you do all the hard work is just great! Is the intention to replace the audio Sidepodcast with the video as I'm not sure I understand why you are doing both? For those of us with just a audio MP3 the audio podcast is great won't they start to overlap? I love listening to Sidepodcast while I work so the longer half hour audio is really good. To watch a longer video requires a break time so does not work so well in that respect.

Having said that 4 mins is not exactly long!! And it is nice to have photos or video of what you are talking about.

On the mug controversy - mug was fine and liked the little model but not sure about the candle. Also can you tape the auto queue thingy to the underside of the desk or is that just a ridiculous idea you have already discounted :)

On an entirely different topic - I have picked up various F1 yearbooks in second hand shops recently which is great as I get to know some of the history in the last decade or so but I am thoroughly confused as to what team is what now...Minard?? Bennetton??? Jaguar?? Stuart???where did they go? It seems F1 teams change their names and sponsors so often and morph with their corporate paymasters. Have you ever done a family tree of who was who and what they are now? is there one out there? the whole Spyker/Force India thing is a case in point. It seems only Ferrari, Williams and Mclaren go back any length of time. Any ideas? I'm confused.

PS excellent choice of music on Vid 22 - nothing like a good bit of Manics :)

  • Is the intention to replace the audio Sidepodcast with the video as I’m not sure I understand why you are doing both?

good point, we're still figuring that one out, but in simple terms the audio show is more of a discussion. whereas with the video, one of us has to operate the camera, so it becomes more like a news show.

Also can you tape the auto queue thingy to the underside of the desk or is that just a ridiculous idea you have already discounted

good thinking, we haven't. it's quite heavy but worth a try.

It seems only Ferrari, Williams and Mclaren go back any length of time.

that is a fine idea for a mini series, i'll have a word with the boss :)

PS excellent choice of music on Vid 22 - nothing like a good bit of Manics

ahh, don't thank us, we'll play any commercial artist who's open minded and forward thinking enough to allow their music to be used on a podcast.

99.9% of artists aren't, so credit to MSP for that.

  • Any More F1 Rewinds on the horizon??
