Live: 2009 Petit Le Mans Thread
Published by Scott Woodwiss
There is more Franck racing on today with Petit Le Mans starting very shortly. Mr C and I know very little about this kind of thing, but I always try and encourage support of FKM. To help us out, Scott Woodwiss has written an excellent introduction to the race.
Endurance racing has it’s classics – Le Mans, the Nurburgring, Sebring, Spa and Daytona are notable venues that all feature punishing tests of man and machine. But every year since 1998, come the end of September, one small circuit in Braselton, Georgia has been the central event of the American Le Mans Series, alongside the season opener that is the Sebring 12 Hours. Welcome, everyone, to Road Atlanta. Welcome...to the Petit Le Mans.
Why Petit Le Mans? I guess the name comes from the format of the race, which is very simple. First car across the line after 1000 miles or 10 hours of racing is the winner, both in their class and quite possibly outright as well. It’s an event that was dreamed up by ALMS founder Dr. Don Panoz, also of Panoz Motor Sports Group fame. What started out as just an IMSA event in 1998 became a round of the ALMS a year later. Infamous events include the flip that occurred for Yannick Dalmas’ GT1 Porsche in 1998 and a carbon copy of that incident happening to Bill Auberlen in his LMP BMW V12 LMR in 2000, not forgetting as well the stunning drive last year by Allan McNish to win after starting from the pits 2 laps down due to crashing the car an hour before the race!
So what can we expect? Well, let’s look at the field, class by class:
LMP1
This is going to be a very hotly contested class, with Audi, Peugeot, Oreca, Acura and Lola all represented. Audi bring their R15 TDI monster to the table with two entries for Luhr/Werner and Capello/McNish, as do Peugeot with their Le Mans-winning 908 HDi FAP. Driving their two cars will be Minassian, Lamy, Sarrazin and of course – our Franck! Audi will certainly want revenge for Le Mans this year after losing out to the French but with the Pugs that bit faster in a straight line, I reckon that back straight will be decisive somehow. Acura bring a pair of ARX-02a’s with notable drivers including David Brabham, Dario Franchitti, Gil de Ferran and IndyCar champ Scott Dixon. There’s a lot of experience in this team so expect them to be dark horses and an outside bet for the overall win. Oreca have one car with ex-F1 star Olivier Panis heading that team, while the Brits are represented by Lord Paul Drayson’s Judd-powered Lola Coupe. A pair of American-run Lola’s and a Radical round out the class.
This is a tough one to call here as it’s pretty much a certainty that the overall winner will come from this class. If I had to choose, favouritism aside, I think Peugeot will do it this year over the Audis. They’re coming into this event off the back of a fantastic win at La Sarthe and must go into it with the best form. But as we saw last year, never discount the Germans. McNish is an exceptional talent and if he gets the faintest sniff of a win, he’ll grab it with both hands, as we saw last year. Behind the diesel war, expect the Acuras to be best of the rest, with the Brabham car leading that battle.
Predicted class winner/overall winner: #8 Team Peugeot Total 908 – Montagny/Sarrazin
LMP2
A small field in LMP2 this year with just 5 entries, but almost all of them are in with a shout of winning. With no Penske Porsches in the line-up this year, Stuttgart is represented by the Team Cytosport RS Spyder of Pickett/Graf/Maassen. Also, there’s another Acura, the Lowes Fernandez machine of Adrian Fernandez and Luis Diaz. Plus, there’s the pair of awesome Dyson Racing Lola-Mazdas in their striking white and bright green paint jobs. Another Radical makes up the 5 car contignent.
My favourite for this class has to be the Fernandez Acura. Reason? They’ve won all but one of the ALMS events so far this season, so for me it shows they’re on solid form and have a car that seems to work on all courses. The Lola-Mazdas may find themselves chasing each other if they can’t put a stop to that Acura running away. But for me, I like the Acura better and so that’s my choice.
Predicted class winner: #15 Lowes Fernandez Racing Acura – Fernandez/Diaz
GT2
With no GT1 class this year in the ALMS, it’s left to the GT2 cars to fill the void, but the competition in this class is still fierce. Each of the 4 manufacturers represented here – BMW, Ferrari, Porsche and Chevrolet – have won at least one race this season, with the new Corvette Racing GT2-spec C6.R taking victory last time out at Mosport, Canada. But it’s the Flying Lizard Porsche that’s been the class leader so far with 5 wins in a row from St. Petersburg to Mid-Ohio. Plus, there’s the Risi Competizione Ferrari F430 of Mika Salo and Jaime Melo and of course the all-new Rahal Letterman Racing BMW M3s, which scored their first 1-2 at Road America. Other cars of note this weekend include a Dodge Viper Competition Coupe, a Ford GT and an all new GT2 Jaguar XKR making its racing debut. A Panoz and a couple more Porsches round out the class.
To be honest, I really can’t call it. The level of competition is amazing. The new Corvettes and M3s keep getting stronger and stronger and the existing Ferraris and Porsches now face a massive threat from both. Personally, I’d like to see a BMW win but looking at their win in Sebring, I’m going to pick the Salo/Melo F430 simply because if it can win in one endurance classic, it certainly looks the goods to take victory in the other. But I’d still keep an eye on that Flying Lizard Porsche. I think it’ll always be a threat all weekend, and with 5 wins already this season I’m pretty sure they would oblige making it 6. Also, keep your eyes on the BMWs and Corvettes as they should really stir things up should they come on strong.
Predicted class winner: #62 Risi Competizione Ferrari – Salo/Melo
Trivia
- The Road Atlanta circuit is 2.54 miles long and was first opened in 1970.
- This is the 12th Petit Le Mans event since the first one in 1998.
- Audi driver Rinaldo “Dindo” Capello holds the record for most wins in the event with 5 (2000, 2002, 2006, 2007, 2008).
- There are a grand total of 10 ex-F1 drivers competing this weekend (McNish, Panis, Brabham, Noda, Lamy, Montagny, Sarrazin, Magnussen, Berretta and Salo).
- The race takes place this weekend from the 23-26 September and it’s the same weekend as the Singapore Grand Prix, which makes for a brilliant weekend’s racing.
Don’t forget to Live Comment the race on Saturday and support our boy Franck Montagny as he aims to make up for missing out on winning Le Mans despite finishing 2nd with a broken foot.
Follow the race via Radio Le Mans’ commentary and also the live timing provided by the ALMS website itself. Also, I’m sure there will be some online feeds around somewhere so if you find any, don’t hesitate to post them so everyone can enjoy them. So, pick a driver and team and support them through 10 hours of endurance racing. All that’s left for me to say is – GO FRANCK!

Ah, perfect, I'll update the post :)
cheers pat. rlm link for audio commentary:
http://www.radiolemans.com/
I'm hunting for a feed
I can't make that work with Firefox so I'm having to use IE for it...
Just for the record as I wont be able to watch the full race, I'm supporting Gil de Ferran and his blinking Acura :)
http://www.justin.tv/be_new2it
In case no one got the message, I'm supporting Drayson Racing and the combo of Bell/Cocker/Drayson
Me too!
Race is on Motors TV, I think it's the Speed TV pictures with Radio Le Mans commentary
anyone know who christine's supporting?
Yaaay. Mainly Rob Bell though.
Is it Frank something or other?
Thanks. I'll see if I can find a feed for that to save multiple windows..
Franck was fastest in the wet morning warm up
Is there a Motors TV feed?
McNish leads and is pulling away
Not official
Speed TV has it in the US, if you can find that
If you need a circuit map en.wikipedia.org/…nta_track_map.svg
I am only going to get a few minutes of this before I have to go out and miss halfthe race
I've found Speed: http://www.justin.tv/be_new2it
There is no feed on the Speed site
I don't see a volume control on that justin feed
I'm confused. How long have they been going? Why is someone a whole lap ahead? Why is it not Franck?
On the right hand side of the picture
10 minutes.
McNish is winning. He always wins this race. It's the law
15 minutes and the track is wet. Audis seem better in wet.
They started about 20 min ago. They're going 1000 miles, I think. Franck is driving for Pug, but didn't start
Not on mine. Doesn't matter. When I get back I will sort it so that I can listen to Radio LeMans
I see. Their live timing is worse than F1. It said a lap down but obviously not, it's stopped saying that now.
You have to hover over it
You always have that problem with sports car timing for som reason. You have to watch the timing for a little while to get the feel of it
Who is Frank teamed with Lamy or Serrazin?
I started watching, then I realised that I don't care and I'm wasting precious data usage.
#sorryfranck
I have pause/play and nothing else. Doesn't matter just now though
Sarazzin
Sarrazin however it is spelled
Minassian is in with Lamy.
The Peugeots qualified first and second
So why bother commenting? Just ignore it!
Okay, off to play a little blackjack. will return for the end of the race
I shall! That said, I wish to support the following: Dixon and Salo :D
RG will be happy with his team today 4-0
Going very well it is. Only Burnley though.
Impossible! i have it on, but i will see how it goes
Oh no, Marino Franchitti.
Dario's baby bro has problems.
He is Paul diResta's other cousin
why is he named after a sheep? ;)
It's an Italian thing like Michele Mouton except she was French
LOL at Nick Daman:
"There is a HUGE HAY FIELD coming out of the front of the 28 there!"
but why do you know so much about sheep!
I always thought Atlanta was a hot dry place
It's Merino, not Marino!!!
I'm so glad it's not today!
She is from New Zealand. You either play centre forward for the All Blacks or know about sheep
Is that because the devil went down to georgia?
Hehe, do you mean hooker?
Haven't heard Charlie Daniels in many years
Right worktime!
Have fun with your Le Mans. Good luck Franck!
poo-joe?hehe
High humidity - Is this an American Legard. The humidity is falling out of the sky
hence the ;)
It's no good doing intellectual jokes here
If you like onboard shots:
www.speedtv.com/s…ed-on-board-pass/
Gil de Ferran ahead of a Peugeot
coooool
sarcasm may be the lowest form of wit, but it's all I have :D
OK I really have to go out for a while. Have fun till I get back. Then no more fun after that
Will do :-)
Take care out there
Wow that cockpit looks cramped!
I love the sounds these cars make ... and the variation between them!
P2 leader just passed Sarrazin!
I sat in one! did not fit!
From goodwood
This is the R15
And this is either the r10 or r8...
phew. busy afternoon. what have we missed?
de Ferran now into 3rd ahead of the other Pug
Drayson one place behind the Montagny/Sarrazin
We are 45 minutes in. The track is wet. McNish is flying and leads the other Audi. Gil de Ferran is 3rd, then a Peugeot 4th. LMP2 leader is pushing like crazy and is ahead of the other Peugeot
cheers. did franckage not start?
No, Sarrazin did but they are talking about putting him in already.
OOPs Wronged it
Are they about to lap francks car?
should we embed justin in the post?
Oooh yes please!
Funbyte factbox?
Driver change. Montagny is now driving the #08 and is in 8th.
done. if you refresh you can arrange the windows to suit.
ta.
Many thanks!
Thank you kindly!
should've thought about that beforehand. damn. coulda had a track map and everything.
So the 2nd position car in GT2 has gone for slicks! Just after Peugeot went for full wet.
I am listening to www.radiolemans.com audio with the above feed on mute.
Funky Fanbox?
That means we miss the lovely Jamie Howe though (SPEEDtv's Lee) :(
i wish that was embeddable too.
If I get you the link to the stream can you link it in the funbox?
thanks to scott for providing the thread. just catching up now, very handy.
LOL at a car sponsored by "Muscle Milk"! :D
LOTS of pit stops
he spun it!
can try. looking for a track map we can use atm.
Hindy just asploded!!!
I genuinly worried he forgot about breathing!
See:
Also a PDF here: www.americanleman…index_racehub.php
I posted the wikipedia one
ace. thanks you.
For those who use proper measurements, 20" = 500mm of rain!!!
That MuscleMilk team really got it wrong on the tyres then :(
they shoulda had a rapper with a wheelgun!
Oh BTW already sent an email for a shoutout...
blimey!
MWM Facebook collective posted this link for audio:
...but their internets is down - thanks to the idiots at AT&T :(
Oi, to that person who is trying to wreck Drayson's race.
Sweet Jeebus, Speed show a lot of ads!
Yeah, whoever it is better watch it or we'll come round their house and belt 'em!
Dinner time, catch you later!
See ya
Damage for the 66 car of De Ferran.
Clashed with Jon Field
I like Gil de Ferran, real shame that car got so damaged from Field braking too late.
more ads?
They come around quick on US TV.. I never did find a Motors feed.
RLM talking about racing games because they are sponsored by NFS Shift.
RLM are discussing sim racing. never heard of it before and now twice in week.
ahh, that's why it is.
Morning you guys. I forgot to set my alarm this morning.
Good. Field got a 2 minute stop penalty for that.
Afternoon Dan
Repaired and under way with Scott Dixon at the wheel.
Full Course Caution. Debris.
Lamy in 2nd was nearly lapped by McNish, just escaped!
is that mcnish out of the car now?
Yes.
phew. franck may be able to catch up a bit then.
Franck is now 4th. He is on a different strategy to the other frontrunners.
back in hotel but in serious danger of missing the race tomorrow, out to party that apparently does not end before sunset.
Montagny now stopped, 1 lap later than everyone else, so similar strategies now.... odd
hey wolf! you're missing out on petit le mans with all that partying ;)
very.
will catch up with le mans later. have to go now :-)
Green flag again
franck passes!
They should have started with Franck.
Yay for Franck!
Franck passes Minassian and Luhr in one lap! Although I believe he was unlapping himself from Minassian.
Hello all, long time since I've been here. Should have known that with Franck driving they would be live comments :P
And having said that Franck passes Luhr :)
Good timing :)
Hi Corey
Gosh that accident on Thursday was huge, first time I have seen it
ferran crashed.
Dixon crashed!
hey ya corey.
Massive, he was a lucky guy
not de ferran? am confused.
Driver change. It is de Ferran's car.
Ok I've heard about the Sharp crash but that was the first time seeing it...WOW that was huge. cant believe he walked away
The car still moves!
ooh. ta.
gavin shoutout :)
Oooooh I just got mentioned on RLM!!!! :D :D :D
Yay, Gavin got himself a shout
We need to start a Sidepodcast GP2 team. I'm sure we can find several hundred thousand pounds somewhere.
Sweeettt!!!
if you refresh, have added a track map to:
www.sidepodcast.c…m/livecommenting/
The amount of people buying Alex's book...
I've got a few kroner to spare...
Don't see it
Ah, there it is, thanks :-)
I do :) Very nice!
Chris from FastMachines podcast tweeted - Dixon crashed right in front of him.
There's Road Atlanta
Franck got his lap back.
Franck is really on a charge around this course...impressive, reminds me of the stints he did at Le Mans this year
How can the American LeMans Series be in HD and Formula One isn't... (*shaking my head*)
Cant agree with you more Dan.
Drayson in the Drayson Racing seems to doing good in 7th.
Another Gavin shoutout!
Bloody hell! I just asploded!
I wasn't sure how well he'd adapt to the prototype, he's doing well.
Yeah, Cocker looked very good earlier as well.
Amazing that a sportsman with one eye can drive a P1 so well! He is awesome that dude!
Did the feed just die?
Looks like it :-(
http://www.justin.tv/nascarpovvver
the one embedded on the SPC page looks okay.
Thanks.
It has frozen for me.
Yeah It's working again ;)
i just arrived as you guys talked about it going down, I opened up the live comment page and it worked fine.
GO FRANCK!!!
Good day, all! Nice to have some folks to chat with during a race that's on at a decent time in the States! :)
What's happening? My feed has frozen :(
Here's in car footage: www.speedtv.com/s…ed-on-board-pass/
Hi Andy :-)
the one the SPC live comment page is fine.
I'm moving to the east coast next month. I'll be a big fan of races at this time of day ;)
Hey you - glad to be of company :)
Hi, Pat! Thanks for the heads up about this over on Twitter! Sorry about Gil's problems today. And Fernandez's problems now... :( At least Lewis is having a good weekend...
Oooh Is Jeremy Shaw a Kiwi?
So do we think Franck still has a chance to win?
Yeah my picks this week aren't quite working out yet are they... plenty of time yet though.
Of course - it's a long race and it's very wet!
Franck's good in the wet?
The Audis are better in the wet.
the journalist? hes english
Says who?
Grrrr. Hate the Audis.
Me.
The Famous Gavin Brown! I heard you on Gareth Jones on Speed a few months ago! I said "HEY!" out loud when I recognized your voice from all of the Sidepodpanels and what not...it was like a collision of two separate podcast universes, and just about blew my mind... :)
Yeah I got the name wrong - the team guy they interviewed for the #20 Lola (Butch Leitzinger's Car) - John sombody or other... he's a kiwi...
When it was properly wet earlier the Audis drove away from the Peugeots. When it was dry for qualifying, Peugeots drove away from the Audis. Much less clear cut in these mixed conditions.
Off out soon for a friend's birthday celebration, will catch up on the action when I get back. See you all later
Cool. Makes the race that bit more interesting!
The Audis are miles better in the wet. From the weather forecast, it's going to be a very Audi day.
Franck just got out.
See you later.
Very true. If the weather stays mixed, it'll be very back and forth between the Audis and Peugeots.
:(
franck just got out or got in? I'm thinking out.
Definitely makes it interesting!
Eheheh that was a funny meeting - I was walking around the campsites and I just saw him - so I went up to him just to say hello and he ended up interviewing me - he's a really nice guy BTW...
If you like my voice, you'll love my F1 blog (free plug alert!) called "Making Up the Numbers" ;)
T&S shows Sarrazin back in the car.
I'm hoping the conditions stay like this, the interesting the racing will be very good
Oh great - Franck's car's about to get lapped :(
OMG the Live Timing screen is awesome - mouse over a car number and a pic of the car pops up!
Phew, just heading into the pits.
scoring.americanl…m/index_live2.php
Oooh, Franck on the radio.
I've checked it out a couple of times, but need to add it to my regular blog rotation. I'm a bit of a numbers nerd myself, as Pat can attest, and as you might guess from my username, so it's right up my alley. Very cool.
Bell's in. Yaaaaay.
Scott (Woodwiss),
What's that weird message on your Facebook?
Car #1 in trouble?
www.youtube.com/w…tch?v=jTnfqEpKsGI
Just watch that, it'll explain everything. ;)
NOOOO!!!! #88 off!
Drayson car is off!!
ooh no, not the Drayson
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo. No. No,
he lost a wheel?
his wheel came off!
ALMS has made great changes to their online T&S lately. The car pics are much better than they were even 3-4 races ago. They used to be very pixel-y, and the whole page was very buggy.
Ahhh, sigh.
Later - but it makes you look a bit mental! ;)
That's a big hit for the Drayson car. :(
OK I watched it - I still think you are mental! ;)
Hehehe
#88 Lives! Awesome!
Impressive
How cold is 76/65 in celsius?
Yup! came back without one wheel and not dragging the front on the ground too !
15.55C
I love that Lola Coupe! Shame there's no Lola-Astons though! They sound FANTASTIC!!!
And my heart resumes.
15 degrees? Wow, that is cold. The Brawns won't win today then.
65 is 18 degrees
Beautiful Lola chassis with the DBR9 engine. Win.
Well I compared it to 60F 'cos that was halfway :-)
Lola-Mazda in the gravel!
can't possibly be 15 in Singapore?
i was figuring you used the google conversion thing with a cut and paste. not picking on you Pat. I have to start learning the temperature/measurement system for my USA move (october...it got delayed)
this race is the USA right? georgia?
LOL at Hindy "He said he had Pickup on his tyres - well I replaced another word with 'Pickup'!"
15 degrees?? in singapore?
this is going to sound silly.. but wont the lights heat the track a little?
I was thrown by the Brawn comment. That'll teach me for using doohickey and watching the Le Mans thread.
Is that a DBR9 Engine? Because it revs pretty high for a road car...
the lowest temperature ever recorded in Singapore was 19.4 degrees and that was in 1934. I think they'll be OK :D
Erm, it's a joke - I'm in the Petit Le Mans thread! :D
:) yay :)
and being awake at 4am local time, or I guess you're used to that by now, huh? ;)
So if it's not the heat, then what is Jenson's excuse today?
yeah thats not odd. I'm just trying to keep to European time. *cough*
don't confuse me! people get the wrong threads all the time! *wonders off to go watch merlin on iplayer*
Sorry :(
did you not read my comment to Jon earlier? lol
;)
No. Can you link to it?
@ Gavin: I think they (Brawn) said they underestimated the opposition in Q2. How do you do that in F1 where quali is so close
Anyways I'm off to the beach, will be back for the end of the race. Bye
www.sidepodcast.c…9/#comment-513462 :D
i'm jealous! have fun.
I don't know. We are talking tenths being the difference this year though...
See you later
have fun!
Scott Dixon saying he made a rookie mistake he should not have made.
Ah ok. Well he needs to sort it so he can start beating Rubens!
He's being too kind. Scott Dixon is too awesome for that!
tis true, although who knows how well Rubens car will handle tomorrow..
On this link are three on-board cameras - very cool! www.speedtv.com/s…ed-on-board-pass/
My prediction is that Jenson will score a few points and Rubens won't tomorrow...
Afternoon all. How's Franck doing? (Please be doing well, ot I'll be in trouble for asking!)
ace. is that live?
i gather it is. three on boards on one screen is great (one big, two preview style)
I assume so - I am watching it during the ad breaks (so a lot really...)
Hi Chris. The car is third. Franck is out of the car at the moment.
:)
Damn it Sarrizan! Should have gotten a better restart.
Thanks Scott. I just tried to watch, but I'm getting far too much b word, so I've given up!
It is quite bad. If you can't manage video, listen to RLM while doing other things.
I have the feed in the LCLT and the onboards - but my computer is hogging memory ATM!!!
live timing with radio lemans (audio only) could be good, as Pat suggested.
Wow, traffic jam for the diesels to work through! This is fun to watch!
Great move by Sarrazin!
w00t! Sarrizan got his lap back!
Hope we get a replay, the buffering was horrendous at that point.
There should be a replay. The #08 and the #2 cars blew by about 6 GT2 cars on the backstretch, the #08 pulled out of the draft and outbraked the #2 going into the chicane. Nice move. Plus, the #07's right behind the #2 for the lead now!
The Pugs are a-comin'! :D
another ad break?
Ads, ads, ads. It's like watching a NASCAR race today...
another yellow?
Does this mean Franck's car can catch up!!! :D
Big crash for the Primetime Viper. Ouch.
Yep, #08 will be back behind the leaders. But McNish is getting into the #2...
Dario now in the #9 Acura.
#66 Acura in trouble, pulling behind the pits.
Timing shows Sarrazin ahead of Lamy
Wow - lots of lost wheels tod!ay!
Can't understand it, never usually a problem. Across the classes as well.
Looks like it was still on the car until he hit the wall, so less cause more effect on this one...
Hi Guys, Just got back to watch the PLM race.
Can someone tell me what is the problem with the Drayson Lola?
Gotta go. Yardwork beckons. It's been fun, guys! Back later!
Yeah, a wheel fell off after a bad pitstop and they hit the wall - they only lost a lap though...
It lost a wheel and crashed into barrier. Made its way back to the pits but is a long way down now.
Do it tomorrow. Priorities man!
Thanks Gavin and Pat W.
Saw the last laptime of the Drayson car was 8.40 min.
Yeah it didn't take long to fix it but then something else cropped up, can't remember what it was?
Doing an autocross tomorrow! Today was my "getting things done" day, but here it is 2:30 in the afternoon, and I haven't set foot outside yet...
For the lead it seems to be the McNish Audi against the two Pugs, right?
Nononononono McNish is off! :(
Ah fair enough! See you later then.
Yes... but he's in trouble?
wow!!
the people in the garage are listening to RLM!!
Listening now to McNish at RadioLeMans.
hahah! Hindy asked who the engineer on team radio was, and Audi replied to him over the radio!
we are freaked out over that!!!
Ha! Did you just hear that!
Hindy: "Ah that's 'the unmistakable H' on the Audi Radio there'
Audi Radio: "It's Raloh!"
LOL! I wish they did that for the F1 radio!
♥
so did mcnish actually lose very much there?
Went to the back of the line and dropped to third...
Only 23 seconds it seems.. and he's got the entire field in front of him because he's at the back of the SC train. But this'll light a fire under him.
That an engineer comes on the radio to a driver and says:
Leggard is talking b******s again, you ARE in with a chance to win it.
LOL
Language sir, but a great comment anyways!
Since you guys are fans of ye olde grid graphics, here the latest grid graphic post I did earlier.
McNish likes to make things difficult for himself again.
Last year he spun the car going to the grid.
Oops sorry Christine and me .. it ended up on the wrong thread
Rain incoming
I've been away for a bit, what's going on?
McNish spun behind the safety car!
Big crash for the Autocon Lola at turn one. Long yellow for barrier repairs. McNish spun under yellow and is now 3rd - and it has just started raining.
More importantly, where's Franck?
Leading. Well, he's in the motorhome probably but Stephane is leadin.g
Is your feed to Speed TV from Justin also as bad as mine??
It look like a slideshow for me.
YAY! :D
Same here
Peugeots left it a lap too late to pit!
Peugeot, what have you done?!!! :(
Franck's going in!
Replay showed the 07 Peugeot was of the track.
How long left of the race?
Just under 5.28 hours to go!
WOW! How did Peugeot do that! Franck's in the car and leading.
That rain is ridiculous.
McNish spins!!!!
McNish spun! He's radioed to ask for SC
Both Audis have gone off AND the Drayson Lola!
Monsoon tires the way to go now.
So what was that you guys said earlier? Audis are best in the wet? :D
But its monsoon, unfair to say a car is good in that surely?
You need a rudder in this weather! LOL
I'm waiting for Hindy to say:
This monsoon is brought to you by Mazda.
how is the petit going? not seen any today, how has Nishy been going?
Yeah, but you don't see Franck spinning, do ya? ;)
All down to luck.
Very enjoyable until the monsoon rain arrived and neutralised it! Nishy is 3rd because he spun.
Red Flag!
Red flag. Lightning reported!
Pat W, he has spun twice! considering last year's warm-up lap spin he could be considered the spin master of the Petit!
Best thing is - Franck is leading! :D
"Franck Montagny leads for Peugeot" Sounds good doesn't it? :D
If you were cheering him on I suppose.
aww Mr RG...
WOOOOO GOOO ROOOOBBBBB
What has happened in the last hour?
Jon knows how to make me feel better :)
Red flag, McNish spun twice, Franck leads.
Go Rob-Bell he's our man, if he can't do it...
We'll wait till next season!
Oh dear. What an anticlimax :(
There is a flash flood watch in Georgia.
Doesn't look good fot the racing.
Yup, reports of lightning in the area is what brought out the red flag.
There has been a lot of rain in the the South East USA in the past month. The ground is saturated and can't absorb any more water, flooding ensues.
YAY!!! SIDEPODCAST SHOUOUT!!!
Yay, you got a mention!!!!
WOOOO!
Shoutout!!
And Hindy pronounced it correctly!
Did you hear that? That was me that sent that in, that was :D And Hindy said it right for once! :D
Pronounced correctly!
Erm, others sent them in too you know...
I bet Hindy's been saying it for an hour every night since his mistakes.
i need to get a replay.
Oh really? Sorry, I had no idea!
did they say who sent it in?
It looks like a fishing competition.
What is going on??
I didn't hear it I think...
No, just listed some names of different sites following along
McNish caught a carp I seem to remember.
All this online streaming and commenting is killing this little temporary computer I'm running...
...actually I blame Firefox
Use CHrome!
Red flag due to lightning warning, they've had to pull the flaggers from the stands and some cameramen too I think.
Agree with you Gavin.
Been using Chrome now for a month and I'm loving it.
IE never again.
Not sure if Jon is listening, they just gave a shoutout to "the veterans of the 2CV race"
It's great on Netbooks too!
w00t.
im not sure im quite a veteran yet!
Will it make any difference at all on a box running 512mb RAM? Can't wait for my proper replacement
Never seen a race stopped for lightning before
Not sure - I only have a gig on an old and knackered PC - but it runs well on the eeeeeeeeePC and the Acer Netbook too...
The clock continues to run, currently at 4h45 to go. No matter what, this will end at 21h10 local
Franck's on screen behind Sarrazin :D
"Google Chrome does not support your version of Windows".
because I couldn't be bothered to install SP2 because I've only got this box for a few days
Ah OK - good luck with all the security holes BTW...
Gavin, which holes? The ones naturally there, or the ones implanted by Google to continue and deepen it's spying efforts?
Doesn't matter, I'm not carrying anything over.
No, XP1 has big security holes apparently...
Paul Drayson rocks.
Wow - so much water out there!
How did Scott Sharp walk away from that? Look at how quick they built that car!
McNish spun form the lead? There must be something in his contract that he has to give the others a chance
The tub was ready-made but was in California. It was flown in over Thursday night. It then took 21 hours to build it up..
Amazing!
Bloodhound is an incredible design. Not sure I would fancy sitting in it once all the power kicks in
So, Dilemma time - do I watch MOTD in half an hour or stick it out here?
Without spoling resutls, MOTD will be a good'un tonight...
Righto, if it rains at 10:20 I will switch then...
I guess MOTD and have this on in the background. I don't know how fast this track dries but with all this water I can't see them running in the next hour
You know my opinion of fitba, I'd rather watch rain falling :-)
I hear you. I am trying to watch the race and my college football team beating the number six team in the nation.
Official: Minimum hold of 1 hour. So MOTD it is then.
Race Director on RLM saying one hour minimum
RLM being the first to be told that there is going to be a minimum delay of an hour.
He is reading the comments too. I said that two minutes ago
Dixon on RLM!
which comments?
looks like we've missed very little.
this ever happened before?
Apparently not?
Tommy Milner doing a much better job than me explaining why Sim Racing is 5 Pints of Awesome !
That one which I posted a couple of minutes before he announced it would be an hour before the race restarted
On last years Nurbuergring 24 hours race there was such thick fog, that the race was stopped for about 4 hours, if I remember correctly.
a certain 2CV was stopped recently for fog IIRC? ;)
You get that occasionally at Le Mans too and of course as we are all aware the 2 CV race at Snetterton was held up for a while due to fog and to let Jon sleep
my ears are burning ;)
i had to fill for 4 hours!!!! 4 HOURS!!!
it didnt work, i got the same amount of sleep as if it was a normal race...
i sleep wearing ear defenders :)
RLM has gone down for me. I'm getting a pre-recorded tech difficulties loop.
How long has this delay been?
Same here - lightning strike?
Me too. It sounds like the wirecast woman
Probably water getting into the commentators
May be water in the electrics?
I wonder if RLM use MT?
About an hour I think.
Aghhhhhhhhhhhh.
Bit like Malaysia?
She needs an extended script before people starting switching oof because she is annoying them
Is it Eve?
Atlanta looooks a lot more like Scotland than I expected
I have been asked to go to a course in Aberdeen in November. Can't say I'm looking forward to it!
She hasn't said her name
I think so
My niece just started university there and is loving it. The weird thing is that in the two weeks she hhas been there she has developed a Scottich accent. This may not seem unusual but she grew up in London snd has an English accent. Even though she spent a while in Hong Kong and the last couple of years in Scotland her accent never changed. Two weeks in Aberdeen seems to have done the job though
The embedded feed has switched to coverage of a previous ALMS race this year, during the rain delay.
Mosport is a wicked circuit!
RLM ned Mr C in charge of their technology. He never took this long to fix a problem
has it got wet?
i can reboot a server in 60 seconds.
I guess they are not using the Microsoft servers that go in the buildings without roofs
#MrCFacts ?
hehe.
i like that rlm at least have a fail message.
Take note, (ft)
hehe. i was thinking for parade lap
ohh. we're back.
ta.
Hehehe, brilliant quote from my Mum just now regarding her Nano I got her for her birthday:
"So I can listen to radio from the Americas, Asia, Australia and Japan. Can't get Norfolk though, can ya?!"
:D
dumb question. what time to they call the race a day? is there a 75% limit or anything?
When the 10 hour time limit is reached I'd imagine.
ahh. fair enough. i guess it is endurance.
The race will run until the time limit, wheter red-green-blue-yellow-brown-black flag. So, at 21h10 local (or so) the race is over.
They will call it on the 10 hour limit or if it becomes obvious that they won't be able to re-start before it.
cheers bert. if nothing changes is franck the winner?
Yes.
For a distance race there is a 50% limit, i.e. complete just over halfway and that's an 'official' race. We haven't reach half distance (being 500 miles) yet. They've just said that because this is a timed race and the clock has continued, we are through halfway and so it will be an official result if they choose to abandon.
ever seen a similar situation before?
I haven't.
drop.io/sidepodca…et/image005-jpg-2
breaaad :)
mmmm
No. It's not unusual to lose a few hours at night or early morning at Le Mans but I don't know of anything like this at the Petit
Steven, true, but regardless the 10 hour limit is absolute.
Me: (you): please don't try to hold your breath until then!
I have not seen anything this bad before, in ALMS. We do have the Malaysian F1 GP and some long yellow-flag periods at Le Mans.
poo.
wrong thread. sorryyy
That's not true actually. Dario won the 2007 Indy 500 this way.
RLM are now discussion another rule where a car has to complete 70% of the distance of the winner to be classified.
ahh, boo. makes sense though.
So nobody wins?
No, the others are classified based on the number of laps the overall leader has completed.
Pat: good one. Don't forget Michael Waltrip at Daytona in 2003 or the Moto GP race last year.
....Moto GP race at Indianapolis....
Ahhh, I didn't read the 'of the winner' bit.
No, it is based on the distance completed by the leader, not the scheduled distance of the race. The leader has completed 184 laps. 70% is 128.8 laps, so anyone who has completed 128 or less will not be classified in the official result.
Dex sounds completely different on these mics :-)
that's dex??
The Irish guy who seems to have lost all the bottom end of his voice scale, yeah
wow. completely different person.
Just to say this would only exclude Drayson.
I like the nobody wins rule.
what we need is jon to come along and play some bob the builder.
Like cricket?
*ahem*
now that is better :)
it was 4 o'clock in the morning, we played aaaaaaaaaaall sorts of tunes :D
hehe.
The gaming guy... he just said you can have 3 monitors and 3D glasses in NFS Shift?
They do 3 screens with most racing games now. 3D glasses though - that's a new one on me!
Can be done - needs a lot of grunt though!
Speed TV back at Road Atlanta.
how does it look?
dark
Still wet. Just an update on what's happening.
Like a football match - because I'm watching MOTD. Thanks to whoever scheduled rain so I didn't have to miss the foooty :D
They've gone back to Mosport now.
Good ol' mother nature. Oh btw, mother nature, wouldn't mind a tinsy bit more rain up here if it isn't too much bother.
Why do you need rain?
As a keeper, I hate, hate, hate, pitches that are hard. Hate em.
Watching that Acura move through the GT2 cars at Mosport, I love the thought that with the new freedom in creating your own online play rules in Forza 3, you can have class racing if you want it :D
Tweet from the official feed @almsnotes:
Latest update: Track cleanup is beginning. Race control has asked the teams to be to restart at 7:30p #alms #petitlm
woohoo!
What time is that in UK time?
So just under an hour until the restart then?
I'm trying to work that out. Are they 5hrs or 6hrs?
That's half past midnight. An hour away yet
Perfect timing - can someone say it closer to the time so I can restart the video please?
I expect there will be lots of warning. RLM were saying they expect several yellow laps before they go properly.
So so far, if the order stays where it is, I've gotten 2 of my 3 class predictions right. :D
Jamie Howe - she's cool!
I reckon it's time they went back for an update. Speed said they'd be back at the top of the hour.
It's tomorrow.... today!
Well that was epic fail, Wrong thread.
Tired lukeh. apologies race goers
Thats OK - at least SOMETHING happened! ;)
Tweet from @DraysonRacing: "Little under 15 minutes until the "be ready" time provided by IMSA. Back to pit lane, back into the rain... which has lessend."
I am too busy watching the F1 FP2 replay, with Sir Jackie!
He was awesome. What a brilliant Mascot for F1...
Speed says the rain has stopped and a decision on what happens next is coming at the top of the hour.
cheers, sir.
Can someone explain the BBC 'Red Button' service? Is it a sort of pay-per-view service or just extra channel options?
The decision being obviously whether they go racing again or declare a result.
Oops, that was meant for Mr C's comment.
McNish and Johnny Mowlem not convinced the track will get dry enough to re-start. McNish said he couldn't see the puddles form the cockpit in daylight so going out in the dark could be interesting.
2 extra channels are accessible, and sometimes some audio options
bert, what it is, is nonsense.
it's just a way of accessing an alternate channel, via a special button. however, it likely hasn't escaped your notice that the red button is often the "off" button. so it's really a 2nd red button.
pressing the big red button offers only silence :)
The Red Button is extra channel options. They have different commentaries, in car footage & show the F1 Forum after a race. It depends on your TV provider. I have cable & have the red button service, it also has BBC iPlayer so I can catch up on programmes through the TV
It is nonsense. I think it is just a way to create channels without going through the politics of creating actual channels. Plus they don't need to run them to schedule, they can just put something on it when they like and turn it off again after.
Effectively it is a number of sub-channels under a main channel. So rather than having 6 separate channels from BBC 1 you press the red button and you have the choice of a number of other options.
very likely true.
Andy Blackmore, who made the Spotters Guide linked before, is on RLM. He also designs liveries for teams. Very interesting.
But it is not a 'pay' service, per-se? I often hear hear 'press the red-button...' and think that it is some sort of 1-900 (North America) pay-per-call scam, the sort of thing you seen on X Factor and such.
I love this guy talking about car liveries. I remember when Lotus did the Camel deal with the yellow car with blue writing. Camel insisted on using the exact shades of yellow and blue of their corporate colours until someone took a black and white pic and discovered that you couldn't see the writing at all.
It's not something you pay extra for, it's just part of the service from the BBC through satellite or cable TV
It's free
The RLM listeners collective has done 600 posts during the race. Is that all? We did that every hour last Sunday
we've done almost that many and we're casual fans.
This is no.561. I'm sure we can overtake them.. if something happens to talk about..
I don't like the RLM racial streotyping. Just because it is about rain they don't need to keep asking Scotsmen
Dario said they qualified Thursday, flew down to Florida with Scott Dixon Friday morning, did a day of oval testing and flew back again..
Sounds like the IRL final race is tomorrow?
In a fortnight
Steven, close, but.... the final IRL race is in 2 weeks, at Homestead Miami.
Thanks. I was confused because I wasn't aware of it being this soon and it seemed odd to do a 1000 mile race the day before.
Tony Stewart used to attempt the Indy 500 and the Lowes 600 on the same day - he failed with exhaustion one year :(
This is from Mike Fuller, who runs the Mulsanne's Corner website and is a composites engineer for the Robertson Ford GT2 Team:
Have no idea if they'll restart, listening to Speed for the update. Supposed to make a decision at 8pm. Doesn't make any sense to charge out onto a wet/dark track even if the rain has stopped. Remember, teams have to turn around to Laguna in 2 weeks (trucks will leave in a week). So far we haven't killed any cars today, so I'd hope they'd ere on the side of caution.
Robertson Racing is run by Dick Barbour Racing and the shop is right there at the track. Latches seemed to have shattered. They're the flush mounted Aerotech plastic kind. Never seen anything like that.
It's a good car. The pole was a nice validation. So far we've turned the 4th fastest lap in the race, so again, validation of the car's potential and speed. Now all we need are Michilens!
I remember that
It's a safe bet the race won't re-start now.
so, audi unbeaten run remains unbeaten?
Yeah, Race is over.
That's it!!! :D
FRANCK WINS!!!!! :D :D :D
Chequered flag is out. It's done.
Chequered flag is waved
McNish won't know where to go. He has only ever finished this race in one position
Franck's on Speed TV now :D
Franck on Speed
wooo!
McNish looks really ticked off.
This was so Petit it was the hors d'oeuvres Le Mans.
Wait - so Franck wins because McNish spun under the safety car?
christine asked him to give bibendum a hug on the podium next time he wins... will there be a podium...
he's on RLM now
pretty much!
He was first when the red flag came out so yes! :D
Hmm... not the best way to win is it?
McNish saying on Speed that Audi are not going to Laguna so they won't have another go at Peugeot until Sebring in March.
I always knew Franck could win
I'm pretty sure there will be.
Yes
It isn't like he had a chance to make up for it.
They announced fans to the podium
But he wasn't winning until McNish spun off under the safety car.
There's also 1 hr 45 mins left and it's not raining?
There is one hour left and it is standing water on the track and it takes 25 minutes to warm up a prototype.
There is only an hour left and there is no way they were going to dry the track. I posted a comment sayig that a couple of minutes before the announcement
That's McNish's problem.
Yes, they are referring to the standing water as lakes
Not if it was under conditions not fit for racing...
Exactly. Although it sounds like it should have been stopped earlier but I didn't se it.
i guess franck didn't spin. dunno. i'd rather see a race but what happened, happened.
The officials decided it was safe. Thems the breaks
It changed so quickly there wasn't much that could be done. As soon as the rain got hard they called a Safety Car and as soon as cars aquaplaned they called a red flag.
it was very wet, two audi's went off, the pugs didn't.
You can't call a safety car for bad conditions, stop the race for it and then not roll back the results until before the safety car - that doesn't seem right to me.
How long did they run?
4hr 45min roughly
Dario has loads of hair, Marino has none? Weird!
that sux, they stopped running before I got to the casino
Well, Lamy did but he didn't spin. Just lost it a bit and went over the grass.
There is a rule that teams are only allowed one type of wet tyre. Listening to Quesnel the Peugeot boss they struggled when there were intermediate conditions and Audi suffered in really wet conditions
They rolled it to one lap before the red flag, I believe, not the beginning of the SC. Which is correct according to every series I know.
Different milk man
that sounds about right. and also a rather daft rule.
But they left the safety car out too long though :(
:)
Hindsight
Talks funny, as well
That's their decision though.
Cars were falling off the track. Should have been stopped at that instant.
RLM ditching out quick. Speed still running.
They did!
I assume Franck will get a mention on the Debrief tomorrow
More Franckage in two weeks time
The Brazilian GP in 2003 was stopped 2 laps before the red flag due to rain though: en.wikipedia.org/…zilian_Grand_Prix
there is... blimey.
Those are the F1 regulations which roll the result back 2 laps. ALMS rules are to roll it back one lap.
i though it was because smashed into webber wheel?
*alonso
Wasn't rain part of it?
no.
www.mazdaraceway.…Car_Championships
Not quickly enough though?
we know that now... this all happened within 60-80 seconds, there's no way it could have been done sooner.
wikipedia says it was because the guardrail alonso hit was irreparable and blocked the track. it rained earlier during the race but had no bearing on the red flag.
At the end of the day, Franck won, Audi lost, end of. That's how I see it in my impartial opinion.
The guardrail being a huge stack of tyres, wasn't it? I remember tyres everywhere on the track.
Impartial??? You were rooting for Peugeot the whole evening!
i agree. but would add, mcnish would've likely recovered and won given the chance.
:)
My memory fails yet again. Still, they rolled it back two laps didn't they?
Yes that's true, but now the race has finished I'm trying to settle this whole thing about the result.
Impartial?? You have been shouting FRANCK all day
You just copied me before I said that. Cheek.
That timeframe is much less than a lap under the SC isn't it? Why can they not just roll it back until the end of the racing? That was when the race ended and the field was supposed to be frozen - the cars that fell off the track did so because of the safety car...?
OK fine, I'll hop over to the daily and let you lot sort it out yourselves.
It's a shame for him to lose it like that but that's racing. 4 wins and a third from 5 attempts is an OK record.
This is one of those situations where the letter of the law does not cover the situation adequately :(
That's no way to discuss an issue Scott.
he kinda has a point. i can see your frustration, but the drivers job is to keep it on the island under all conditions, not ideal conditions and mcnish didn't.
others did.
It would have been a great race and it would have hung on how wet it was, I think. As it turned out, too wet.
OK if you do that how many pace car laps do you count back. If it is out for five laps do you go back. If it is out for an hour do yougo back? If you end up with the insane nonesense we had in F1 a few races ago where it was pulled in just at the last corner of the race do you count back.
Those are not the rules. The rules are to roll it to one lap before the red flag flies. That's what they did.
He does have a point, a very good point actually.
In fact Marco Werner got a lap back because of it.
Yes but the race was stopped because of the weather - they didn't stop it quick enough and cars fell off the track because they were running cold under the SC.
My point is, if it's because of the SC that they lost the race when the field was supposed to be frozen, then the letter of the law doesn't cover the situation adequately.
who says the field is frozen? you can't go forward, but you can go backwards. stand up trulli in melbourne.
Who says that was right either?
Gil De Ferran says that at 41, driving an LMP1 is a 'major uphill battle'
So how can someone that age keep up driving an F1 car???
Sorry to state the obvious, they weren't to know it was too late until it was too late. The first they knew about the standing water was when someone spun.
I might be wrong but my hazy recollection is the SC did half to three-quarters of a lap when they called the red flag. It wasn't long.
There should be no reason why someone that age cannot drive anything. The only reason it is an uphill battle is if he is not enjoying it or not training properly
So if that was the case, how come McNish didn't get rolled back into the lead?
I'm struggling to think back to the correct sequence of events.
he made up some places. i recall hindy shouting. did he go off before the SC or something?
it was hours ago, i forget.
did mcnish's spin prompt the safety car? i heard the man screaming from the other room.
Sorry, part of this is my lack of understanding of what happened.
Apparently:
(1) The rain fell heavily
(2) The SC was called
(3) A short time later, some people spun off
(4) The race was red flagged and rolled back a lap
I think what is crucial here is how long after the spins the red flag was dropped. It sounds like a minimum of 2 laps to me...
I am confused by that comment. The words sound like Christine's but there are no capitals
He was definitely the lead car behind the SC when he went off, I saw the replay of that not long ago. What I don't know is how long the SC had been out.
Ditto.
hehe. i really have to go. but i was in the kitchen and heard hindy screaming, came back and mcnish was asking for a push back on track.
then he made up a few places?
did he spin a second time, i have no idea.
my heads hurts. we need highlights. night (again) all.
You have the right order of events. I think it was a minimum of 1 lap because I'm sure Nishy was one of the first to spin. Only when other cars spun, which wasn't long after, did the red fall.
The other factor is where did he spin? I couldn't tell because of the stuttery video feed.
He said he spun twice. Once through low tyre temps and one just aquaplaning
That's what's confusing things then.
Right, so if people were spinning off, why did they carry on with the SC if the cars couldn't follow it? Or was it because of that they dropped the red flag?
I found a lapchart.
admin.americanlem…ing/lapchart.html
He spun in a different yellow?
Looking at lap 168 where he drops from 1st to 3rd, which he did when he spun. That was the yellow beforehand. That was his first spin. I'm guessing then that he spun again in the following yellow.
So there was a yellow, he spun, they went green, they went yellow, he spun again?
He definitely lost two positions due to a spun under yellow. That lapchart suggests they went green again. My memory is so hazy I geniunely don't remember.
Autosport has the answer:
Right, so yeah he spun then and so did Bell in the Drayson Lola, I remember that. That was a fairly long yellow to clear that up. I thought it went red at the end of it, I lost the 6 green laps from memory for some reason.
Then the Peugeot won it fair and square because the officials deemed the track safe for racing for a few laps. There's no contesting it I'm afraid - although it's a strange way to win it...
Not a satisfactory way to end it, even the winners would agree with that.
