Sidepodcast Hangout - What would you bring back from the 90s?
Music and technology nostalgia are the talk of the town
Published by Christine Blachford
Microsoft have a rather good advert doing the rounds at the moment, and whilst it is for IE so we can discard it, it's also celebrating everything that was great about the 1990s. What with that, and my discovery of the ITV2 series The Big Reunion, in which six pop bands from that era get back together, I'm on a bit of a 90s kick at the moment. There was so much good stuff about in that decade, what would you bring back if you could?

The Microsoft thing: www.youtube.com/w…tch?v=qkM6RJf15cg
And The Big Reunion: en.m.wikipedia.or…i/The_Big_Reunion
Hello :)
There is so much amazing from the 90's I don't even know where to begin. The Crystal Maze is one thing I'd bring bacl but it MUST have Richard o;brian.
I would bring back Ferrari being hopeless and never winning.
Also the Game Boy Colour. Best handheld ever.
Afternoon all.
Hi Will
I'd quite like to bring back the care-free attitude that I had, what with not having any proper responsibilities back in the 90s.
Oooh, also, Noel's House Party. Put that on at 6, Doctor Who at 7, Saturday nights are sorted again.
*mr c rides into town a shooting and a hollering*
i think christine, who got up crazy early for amazon reasons, may have gone to sleep. ergo, by default, i shall be your attractive host for the day.
surely not better than the green and black screen? i played tetris on that until my eyes fell out. then played it again.
She probably deserves sleep for producing another book
Did you have those dreams that involved all those falling tetrominoes?
the game boy is an all out classic that can't be touched but I always found the colour more memorable. One of the first games i played on it on my birthday was F1 Racing Championship. It wasn'y very good though :)
Happy memories of the Zelda games though
ha! no, but now i wish i had :)
there's no excuse, i'll be docking her pay for this, mark my words.
also the 90's brought the greatest f1 game of all time
#awesomeplug
#respect
Not as good as the Sinclair Spectrum game that only had Silverstone and because it did so few colours the tyres were red
it had about 8 colours. surely one of them was black?
Yes but the track had to be black
ahhhh. no grey at all? that's unreal.
After that though there was an Amiga game with James Hunt's brother's face plastered all over it and it had adjustable wings. Serious stuff
different times :)
what about music in the 90s? i can remember things like games and tv shows and trends like tamagotchis and pogs, but my music knowledge of the 90's is rubbish.
apart from saturday night by whigfield.
...I shouldn't have confessed that
his brother?
David who was an F3 driver. You have heard of him because he owned the rights to Team Lotus
britpop! best decade ever.
there was noel falling out with liam, liam falling out with noel. liam not turning up to sing, noel singing instead. a whole musical soap opera.
i have!
jarvis cocker and the michael jackson incident!
#classic
That cannot have been in the 90s
I was also into the dance music that was rife - best decade for dance :)
oddly pulp have a comeback single out this week. it's not very good.
1996 my good man
How can that be nearly 20 years ago???
no question.
and you had one of the prodigy dating an all saint, then liam dated an all saint.
it all came back to liam basically.
*shudders*
but the 90s was last week...
I think my first music purchase was in the 90's, it was a 'Now' CD. I think it was the one with Kiss from a Rose by Seal
exactly!
I'm lurking while I eat my pancakes.
Hi all.
An early dose?
Wikipedia tells me it was this one
en.wikipedia.org/…c!_31_(UK_series)
It looks familiar!
?
It's 12:30pm
Ahead of Shrove Tuesday this week...
IT'S PANCAKE DAY THIS WEEK?!
oh, I don't do religion, so I don't know about these things.
Sorry, sudden rush of excitement
Which celeb are you targetting next?
*spins the wheel*
Ohh mmyy goood it is. It's one of the most important days of the year!!
Me either, but it is the only time of year that I get round to pancakes... I mean to change that, but it seems another year has passed without me doing so.
We don't have anything here that I know of that involves pancake day. :(
no kidding. I thought I'd take a stand for once and see what I get? oops.
gluten free pancakes is one of the only yummy things I can have with all of my food sensitivities, so I make them each week.
WUT?!
I know!!!!
These things sneak up. I'm so excited now!
who've ya upset now?
#thenewmrc
In the 90's I was finishing college and I liked that life. That would be a good thing to bring back. I'd enjoy it more while it happened rather than always wanting to get it over with.
#neeeeeeed
Easter is rather early this year - I love me some pancakes :D
Pancake Day is one of my favourite days of the year :D
Don't go and waken Christine to demand pancakes.
i can wait till tuesday. just.
Nobody...yet. I'd taking a break from guest posts, though. :)
*I'll be
Hopefully it won't take me an hour again to make pancakes like the live stream before...
You can't take a break after that one being such a success. Mr C told everyone Ringo was dead and Ringo didn't even comment that he was alive still.
and there is a bright side, David Hobbs didn't show up.
It's all good stuff for SPC, so that's the bottom line.
Maybe he will turn up at the start of the week. At least you know you have a direct line to people you want to influence
That's what was so cool! I heart technology.
Aww, I can't find the daily comments relating to this. That was a fun day though. Batter mix is hard to make,
Daily comments relating to pancakes?
i remember we were discussing it whilst i was live streaming it in the comments in a daily post
also you guys have to see this - what happens when you don't close off your HTML tags:
www.sewingandembr…se.com/embtrb.htm
hehehe!
I don't remember anything about pancakes ever
Mr C has gone very quiet. If he is waking up Christine to demand pancakes she is going to kill him
I remember that.
This is from 2011 but it's cool to see this side view of a Lotus Elise at Bathurst. Some close racing.
www.youtube.com/w…tch?v=LbR0nWUTu9w
You remember me not remembering?
I do recall that, too....and the Hour Pancakes.
Some nice moves
Ash Miller was the driver.

Hi gang.
heeh!
wow, good recall.
it all started so ominously...
Hi Christine.
I still don't remember those pancakes
Hi there. I have the book, but dunno where the Kindle is that it is on... Don't watch this space.
you lost your kindle?
It's very sporadic. I'll remember random stuff but not the stuff I should, sometimes.
Strictly it's Mrs^'s, so no... But she's put it somewhere and can't remember, so yes.
Here's my updated blizzard pics. I may venture out today. I haven't been out since Thursday. At least now the travel ban is lifted.

♥
you appear to be living inside an actual postcard. awesome.
It looks stunning, when snow isn't disturbed it can look amazing. Sadly it soon gets all muddy and icky, and lots of snow tends to bring lots of issues. Apart from that though... :)
It is so pretty. I love it.
The concern now is weight on roofs because we're supposed to get rain tomorrow.
Well, yay and boo all at the same time I suppose!
*awkwardly tries to find somewhere to look*
It's like being on the Underground.
I don't thinlk I could cope with your weather
Hi all, lovely pics Kai but I wouldn't want to be there at the moment.
Here it's just constantly raining so I'm staying in & ordering Domino's with Ben & Jerry's Phish Food :)
So you're in heaven, then? :)
Thinking back to my original comment, I shouldn't have googled the Crystal maze theme. Now it's stuck in my head.
90's had the best gameshows.
Pretty much, especially as I'm not at work this week.
I haven't ordered pizza in ages. I have phish food in the freezer as well as baked Alaska but nothing touches cherry garcia
Great!
Truth be told, I really want to go out to get more snacks. That's it. Now I've confessed.
It's OK Kai, you're in a safe place with the comments. We understand. :)
*wipes a tear* Thank you. Thank you all.
Hell, I'm eating Pringles, save actually making dinner yet.
I have plenty of food and I'm warm and the sun is shining, but there are some snacks from the health food store calling my name. I wish I still had my Subaru today, but front wheel drive GTi with snow tires is a good second.
I have Pringles too. I could get them and dip them in ice cream. That has to be good
Like salty wafers - good sweet/umami combo.
I could see that with plain ones but not so much with the BBQ flavour!
It's very cool that my students made webpages for their latest project and I can grade them online through Google Apps for Education, but I can't focus today.
BBQ might just be a bit much. Fortunately I have plain
Blame the internet and computer problems. You did all the work and it just wouldn't save
I have spring onion ice-cream in my freezer. That might work for non-plain flavours.
I'm sure we all remember this from the late 90's... www.youtube.com/w…tch?v=gsNaR6FRuO0
hehe
I have plenty of time. The pressure is self-imposed to get them done.
heaven.
oh yes...that sound excited me so much. Connecting!
BBC Five Live still use that sound at the beginning of their podcasts it always brings a smile
when you heard that, you knew stuff was about to go down.
I still remember the first time I used broadband. Such a disappointment not to get the dial up sound
oh yeah. ....slowly.
Talking of food: mrschristine.com/…a-cupcake-or-two/
*taps fingers and waits* :)
mmmmmmmmm
At that point my Internet ADD hadn't happened yet, so that was the right speed for me.
wow!
#winning
Do you deliver?
Nothing is ever too cute to eat but those are lovely
Mascots!
Favourite 90's film, people?
Gotta be Bruce and his space rock.
:)
I take it back, Cool runnings was made in 1993. 20 years ago!!!
There are SO many!
en.wikipedia.org/…iki/1990s_in_film
shawshank.
Toy Story was pretty good
The Matrix, Apollo 13, Shawshank
Forrest Gump - Run Forrest, run
Braveheart, before Mel Gibson showed us who he really is. Wait, does he read SPC too??
Food is here - doughballs with cheese are fabulous
Everyone reads SPC
Temptress.
Trash talk from the First Selectman in our little town:
"Unlike our neighbors, all of our roads had been plowed and were open on Saturday night. We are now widening them, pushing back snow bankings and clearing cul-de-sacs."
Competitive snow clearing should be in the winter Olympics
haha!
They already have brooms for curling so they could combine with that
You're right, they'll definitely get eaten :)
Something tells me the Finns, Norwegians, Russians and Swedes would dominate.
I'll bring the hairdryers.
did anyone share lou's panda pic from the other day?
I nearly forgot. Happy Chinese New Year to all especially Chinese lurkers.
It's the year of the snake. I'm a rat. What are you lot?
and the pancakes?
is there a year of the pancake. because that's my kinda year.
steven, you put yourself down too much.
Nope
I'm a rooster.
Not unless they recently introduced it
:)
I have decided to write an f1 blog post just to do an arrested development related photoshop.
I would never have guessed that. Chinese astrology has problems with the boy/girl thing
Excellent.
Goat for me
i make you a tiger, like me...
Terrified Panda hugging police officer's leg after an earthquake...

If we're all plugging, I went wine tasting yesterday, and wrote this today: notonlyahatrack.w…oduction-to-wine/
If you don't know your Chinese animal you can find out here
en.wikipedia.org/…xty-year_calendar
awww!
poor thing :(
Those people at Edinburgh Zoo told me pandas are ferocious. I think they need to go to a psychologist to be told "You are a big ferocious bear"
"Not at the moment! Hold me!"
The real story of that pic
https://twitter.c…00528527034441728
haha
Or waiting to gnaw on his foot?
heeheheheh
Wonder how many bees it took to make this
https://twitter.c…00677849394851840
I have to go out and clear the roof as much as I can, then go to the store for snacks.
Thanks for the company, everyone.
See you later.
Steven, Sidepodcast Fashion Correspondent.
Be safe. Don't let the snow on the roof land on your head.
Take care
ha! I love it.
#nothere
It just popped up in my twitter timeline. I do not follow @Bafta
Get out in that snow. No more sympathy for you
Yea, yea, that's what they all say ;)
I seem to remember that was Mr C's job
Purple = good vs not purple = meh ??
hehe
Bassano was the white heels fashion correspondent
sidepodcast.com/p…ce#comment-792063
OI!
You remember that but not the pancakes!
because it's about fashion ;)
:)
I just search for "fashion correspondent" expecting to find Mr C but found Bassano and white heels instead
Plugggggety plug:
http://gridwalktalk.com/?p=2464
I like your plugging style, sir :)
two plugs in one hangout!
watching 90's reunion tv, while eating panda cakes. life is awesome :)
This Big Reunion show has just made me realise I didn't have enough Five music in my life. Greatest Hits now purchased.
jealous!!
I'm sure rockall has a cake delivery tube coming out of it
we've moved :)
Note to self when going on dragons den - cake delivery tube...
Like those tubes that deliver stuff, you put the capsule in and it whooshes away?
Also sorting out my money for work tomorrow and coming across a 50p piece and the 90's theme of the hangout, I rubbed it and made a wish ala The Queen's Nose.
I see no cake appearing. False advertising.
yep!
but cake,
Like the ones for moneys at the tills in supermarkets.
i was thinking like in futurama :D
Well yes, but those exist already :)
they really do? woah.
In Iceland we only had little compartments for cash. so disappointed,
www.pneumatictube…_tube_systems.htm
They are big enough for cakes to fit in
Cupcakes, yes, and putting a few shelves in could take 5/6 per shot.
Lukeh, you are definitely on to something here.
BAFTAs and Grammys tonight, I think I'm going to wake up tomorrow with a lot of tweets to read and a lot of dresses to look at.
From what I've seen already, they're having a bit of trouble due to the rain. I know I never look my best when walking on a damp red carpet ;)
There was that one year when it rained and something in the carpet meant they were walking through foam. news.bbc.co.uk/1/…nment/1841843.stm Nobody looked their best that year
Hehe, I remember that!
Haha!
Well, thanks for chatting everyone, I'm off to catch up on Howard Goodall's Story of Music. Comment with you soon. x
bye Janna :)
Only a matter of time before they have that at the entry to the F1 paddock and Bernie offering an alternative foam free entrance for a nice fat fee
Byeee.
Bye Janna
I've added more pics, so I'll re-plug: notonlyahatrack.w…oduction-to-wine/
So, does anyone have anything exciting planned for the week ahead?
It's going to be a quiet one, by all accounts, what with no launches, no testing, and for me, no book to be written!
That's so cool!
Should be a quiet week at work for me, but PANCAKE DAY!
are we allowed to sleep?
Oh yes! Do keep reminding us :)
I think so!
Now that it has been mentioned it will be at the forefront of my mind till tuesday :)
Although yesterday I was super close to a spontaneous trip to the Doctor Who Experience. Still haven;t been, amazingly.
Teaching kids is always 'exciting'. But nothing special I don't think.
I need to go there too.
I went museuming today
www.visitlanarksh…-Industrial-Life/
It was a bit difficult to get much enthusiam for the outside bits at 0.5 degrees and snow blowing in my face. I will wait a few months and go back
It's only 25 minutes away, I have no excuse! But I know I need a full day, partly to take it in, partly because I won't want to leave
That does look fun though when the weather is nice, I love stuff like that
They have a tram running and some kind of coal mine you can visit at the end of its run. I need to try that.
oooh, 10 minute warning.
...before i exit on me horse ;)
Mark Thompson @F1Thommo
My doctor says I need to watch what I eat,,,so I've just bought tickets for this years Grand National!

I was goung to say: Wait, let me Findus a joke before we close.
WILL!!
cheers all! talk soon.
I have some ironing to do now, glamorous, so I'll bid you all adieu!
Thanks for the chatters, Sidepodfriends.
