Sidepodcast Hangout - Awards season

Who would you give an award to if you could?

Published by Christine Blachford

It's that time of year when all the industry bigwigs pat themselves on the back for a job well done. We've seen the Brits this week and the Oscars are later today, so music and film are fully covered! Who would you give an award to if you could, either in music, film or something entirely different? Has anyone missed out at a recent award ceremony, robbed of their rightful statue and speech?

  • Christine 24/02/2013 at 14:01:53

    Afternoon.

  • Lukeh 24/02/2013 at 14:01:59

    Hullo all.

  • Will^ 24/02/2013 at 14:02:57

Afternoon all. Looked at my watch at 1400 - meant to be :)

  • Lukeh 24/02/2013 at 14:03:35

As someone who co-ordinates one of the most important awards ceremonies of the F1 year, i can't understate their importance ;)

Stuff like the Brits passes me by though. I watched Muse on them the other day but couldn't get past another 10 minutes or so of the actual awards for a variety of reasons

  • Christine 24/02/2013 at 14:03:57

We are out and about for an impromptu Ikea visit today. I wonder how much stuff we will come back with.

  • Lukeh 24/02/2013 at 14:04:12

We are out and about for an impromptu Ikea visit today. I wonder how much stuff we will come back with.

I've still never been to an Ikea!

  • Will^ 24/02/2013 at 14:04:40

I've still never been to an Ikea!

    Needs to be done once.

  • Mark 24/02/2013 at 14:05:14

I've still never been to an Ikea!

Me neither. Must be something with still living at home.

  • Lukeh 24/02/2013 at 14:05:14

    Needs to be done once.

Argos is closer for stuff like that :)

  • Will^ 24/02/2013 at 14:06:15

Argos is closer for stuff like that :)

True. But the whole experience of being directed through the store and having to walk through every department (for fear of getting lost/missing the part you actually want) does need to be had.

  • Lukeh 24/02/2013 at 14:07:45

True. But the whole experience of being directed through the store and having to walk through every department (for fear of getting lost/missing the part you actually want) does need to be had.

I can't stand stuff like that though so it's probably not the best idea to go. even when I go to The Range I'm in and out within 5 minutes because it's just too much.

In general shopping isn't one of my stronger points :)

  • Steven Roy 24/02/2013 at 14:08:29

I've still never been to an Ikea!

You must. They have great stuff.

Argos is closer for stuff like that :)

Argos does not do meatballs and they are a must every time you go to Ikea. Although I should say I have never eaten at Ikea

  • Steven Roy 24/02/2013 at 14:10:09

I think the first award should go to Ryan for his work in promoting the Eurovision Song Contest within the sidepodcast community

  • Lukeh 24/02/2013 at 14:10:41

    Is it the Oscars today?

  • Will^ 24/02/2013 at 14:11:25

    Is it the Oscars today?

    Erm, yes?

  • Christine 24/02/2013 at 14:11:33

This is the very tentative first step in actually sorting out our setup. Studio 2.0. First stop - furniture that doesn't squeak.

  • Lukeh 24/02/2013 at 14:11:55

    Erm, yes?

Oh, I didn't know until I read the thread blurb. Seems to have popped up out of nowhere

  • Pat W 24/02/2013 at 14:12:36

Hello. I saw the film BAFTAs the other day, Fry was good despite a fairly bad script. The back-slapping annoyed me a bit. Didn't bother with the Brits this year.

  • Pat W 24/02/2013 at 14:13:18

True. But the whole experience of being directed through the store and having to walk through every department (for fear of getting lost/missing the part you actually want) does need to be had.

Then you get meatballs and that chocolate dessert thing.

  • Steven Roy 24/02/2013 at 14:13:28

I have only ever noticed the squeaky furniture once or twice in all the time I have been around SPC

  • Pat W 24/02/2013 at 14:13:29

    or ligonberries

  • Will^ 24/02/2013 at 14:13:41

Oh, I didn't know until I read the thread blurb. Seems to have popped up out of nowhere

I think so... but I do know that the NFLNetwork are putting Ravens Safety Ed Reed on the red carpet, then will be podcasting the results at some point this week.

  • Pat W 24/02/2013 at 14:14:51

  • Lukeh 24/02/2013 at 14:17:51

Not when they keep holding it at strange times or at the same times as other things I want to see.

  • Pat W 24/02/2013 at 14:19:15

But I am always out on Saturdays.

I miss a lot of hangouts because I'm out on a Sunday afternoon or evening. I'll be out again in an hour or so.

  • Lukeh 24/02/2013 at 14:20:48

    What reunion is this?

    How was the pizza?

  • Amy 24/02/2013 at 14:22:03

    What reunion is this?

only the greatest tv show ever

    How was the pizza?

    disappointing :(

  • Christine 24/02/2013 at 14:22:40

only the greatest tv show ever

    It really is!

  • Steven Roy 24/02/2013 at 14:23:00

only the greatest tv show ever

I think I need another clue unless there was a BSB TV show

    disappointing :(

    BOO

  • Lukeh 24/02/2013 at 14:23:43

I think I need another clue unless there was a BSB TV show

i don't think amy can offer a bigger clue seeing as she's already given you the name of it!

(psst.. it's called the big reunion..)

  • Amy 24/02/2013 at 14:24:06

    It really is!

I'm kind of mad Blue have joined in. They haven't been missing for a decade like everyone else.

I mostly can't get over Richie having an Australian accent and just how much ill advised surgery Atomic Kitten have had.

  • Steven Roy 24/02/2013 at 14:24:20

(psst.. it's called the big reunion..)

I have no idea what any of you are on about.

  • Amy 24/02/2013 at 14:24:52

you should, I don't even live in a country where it is broadcast :D

  • Amy 24/02/2013 at 14:26:07

in big BSB news, Nick Carter is engaged. Now they're alllll old and taken.

Right, they did Eurovision and everything.

Australian/Brummie is my new favourite accent mix.

  • Christine 24/02/2013 at 14:27:15

    Your loss!

  • Amy 24/02/2013 at 14:28:45

Australian/Brummie is my new favourite accent mix.

it's so odd, he was way too old when he moved here to pick it up that much. I kind of want to go to Sydney and see it in person.

    Home, thankfully.

Two weeks in Mongolia & China.

Steven, Hong Kong is fine but then I'm only here for a few hours.

    It's for a mine site.

    What are you mining for

    About -32C...............

    I now know the feeling.

My company is doing rfid tracking of bags of copper. Well we would if everything actually worked (and not due to the cold). Too much "yes, that's been done" when it hasn't.

  • Will^ 24/02/2013 at 14:41:02

    Holy cow

I think I've got to -17, but that was due to quite a bit of windchill.

  • Elephino 24/02/2013 at 14:42:27

    Holy cow

    That doesn't include wind chill.

The mine site was warmer, about -10--15 but windier.

Not sure if it is the same in Mongolia but one thing I learned in a few eastern European countries is if you tell someone to do something and they say yes that does not mean yes they will do it. It means yes I understand what you want me to do. There were times when I was convinced a conversation meant one thing and the other person had a very different view of what the agreement had been

There's was definitely some of that but also the need to please the boss now. The Chinese side was worse, though compared to the wooden beds (literally) and generally poor conditions plus I got food poisoning on top of the cold I just got...

It's great experience and great to look back on even if it is no fun at all. Plus it means you stick out in job interviews against the people with identical backgrounds

If he doesn't die of cold!

  • Alex Andronov 24/02/2013 at 14:59:43

    I don't have a statue! FOR SHAME!!!

  • Steven Roy 24/02/2013 at 15:00:23

If he doesn't die of cold!

That's minor. I worked for a French company and we were building two electronics plant in the Soviet Union. One was in Ukraine and the other in Azerbaijan and I was supposed to be doing all the chemical stuff for both even though I was based in Ukraine. My boss turned up one day and asked when I wanted to go to Azerbaijan. We had a discussion of the details then he dropped in that he would need to arrange for me to eat somewhere other than the hotel restaurant. I asked if it was no good and he said it used to be good but some troops had been there on leave from the fighting in Nagorno Karabakh. They had been playing something like pass the parcel with a hand grenade when one grabbed the grenade and another grabbed the pin.

But it is perfectly safe he told me. Needless to say I refused to go anywhere near it

  • Steven Roy 24/02/2013 at 15:01:29

    I don't have a statue! FOR SHAME!!!

I am shocked. I hereby nominate you for an award for the Giggles advent calendar, Giggles Radio and anything else you care to add in

Wow! I think that sounds like a reasonable refusal!

My Russian cousin told me a joke the other day which given where you were working you might appreciate. A guy came from South Africa to St Petersberg for a year job placement. When he went home, his colleagues asked him how it was. He said, "I liked the green winter better than the white one".

  • Christine 24/02/2013 at 15:10:22

Here's a question for you all: has anyone got any other suggestions for tech-y topics that they'd like speculating about?

I've got Modesty Panels, Coanda effect, Suspensions, Overtaking aids, and a few more things, but what do you think?...

  • Steven Roy 24/02/2013 at 15:46:36

I've got Modesty Panels, Coanda effect, Suspensions, Overtaking aids, and a few more things, but what do you think?...

I am happy to speculate about just about anything.

How about pullrod vs pushrod. Tyres compounds and from that number of pit stops

  • littlepurplegoth 24/02/2013 at 15:47:37

Different variations on the Fibre Optic kit...

(LPG wonders if that chap still works there...)

How about pullrod vs pushrod. Tyres compounds and from that number of pit stops

Pull/push rod is on the drawing board.

I like the tyres idea, I'll have to see what data is out there :)

  • Steven Roy 24/02/2013 at 15:50:18

Not sure the data is easily available but it would be interesting to see how ambient temperature/humidity affects the result of a race

  • littlepurplegoth 24/02/2013 at 15:52:41

I'm trying to get the motivation to go out when I just want to hibernate. I suppose I'd better go now or I won't be back for Daytona. See you.

I am not setting foot outside for any reason today. Much more fun just sitting here nice and warm

I wish that this was an option... *somebody* decided that he was well enough to go to work but not to take himself... and now he's posting pictures of a new 'crocs' shop in town onto twitter. (shudder)

Which means that I shall be having to take myself out again in a couple of hours to fetch... this is not doing productivity any good what so ever.

Mind you, I have the worlds warmest-yet-still-well Tinyboy asleep against my back so right now I am warm in an otherwise chilly house. (bliss)

I saw the tweet. Clearly he is not a Crocs fan

I approve of the idea of using kids as hot water bottles

What craziness has Giggles been instigating now?

  • littlepurplegoth 24/02/2013 at 16:35:21

Christine - what was the IKEA trip for? Is it anything that I could source in this one for you?

  • hoky 24/02/2013 at 16:36:35

I'm going to go with this little kids called Derryn: doeverything.org.uk/

Short story: cancer since he was 10 and recently diagnosed with a type of cancer so few people have had, there's no data to base a treatment programme or prognosis on, so they're just going to do a bone marrow transplant. He's 13 now.

Aww, thank you! I think we have another idea, but I'll let you know :)

It's like a musical version of spirograph.

I watched that last week but I think I slept through 20 minutes of it and was confused after that so I need to watch it again

Sleeping definitely doesn't help follow plots!

Reminds me I want to see that again...

Most Bond films are so formulaic that it wouldn't matter but this one seemed a bit different

It harks back to earlier formats, and references so many different films (not just bond ones) and social & political bits and bobs....
