Sidepodcast Hangout - Grand ambitions
What did you want to be when you grew up?
Published by Christine Blachford
This week in the UK, many students eagerly anticipated and received their A Level results - prompting decisions about universities and future career paths. That clearly leads us onto the question, what did you want to be when you grew up? Astronaut or bus driver, we all had those dreams of being something when we didn't really know what it meant. What was yours, and what changed your mind in the end? Or are you living that dream?

Hello Sidepodcast Sunday.
Hello!
Afternoon everyone in Sidepodcastland....
Good evening to you.
Nice question :)
Because of those books about a caterpillar you get read to you when you are super young, i really wanted to be a caterpillar because i thought it was incredibly cool they turned into butterflies. Alas, it was not a career choice to be...
hello!
i am plugging and running because i really need to go to sleep. stupid monday morning.
amyf1.com/2012/08…-olympics-tennis/
:D :D
amy in blogging AND sleeping shocka!
Aww, that would have been quite the news story if you'd achieved it!
channel 4 would've had a field day
oh and in answer to the question i wanted to be a lawyer (strange for a child, apparently), not being in the top 1/3 of my LAWS101 class killed that dream because only the top 1/3 got to go onto second year classes.
Although in junior school I did really want to be a journalist, which kind of fed into my enjoyment of english in high school I suppose
Considering I haven't grown up yet, I'd still like to be a fully functioning human being. I live in hope.
Goooood evening.
I've always really wanted to be a journalist, but I've always thought I could do a decent job as a football manager if someone fancied giving me a chance.
I had no idea what I wanted to be and I succeeded. Now when growing up should have happened a long time ago there are loads of things I want to do.
How was your holiday ryan?
I should point out some of us have a week to go before we get exam results
Hmmm what did I want to be when I grew up.....
I) Aged: Very young brat: A Truck driver (you call them lorry driver)
2) After 1982: A Military Fighter Jet Pilot. The Canadians would not except me as I had farsighted vision at teh them. (They wanted 20/20) End up as a pilot for the reserves. (Less Modernized equipment meant farsighted vision was a plus.) Eventually worked down towards current glider and propeller driven aircraft status only....
3) Filthly rich. Trying to prove I am bernie's long lost cousin.... :P Still working on it.
It was fine, too hot like, but no one ever seems keen on going to Iceland in the summer...
Of course the best part was not really a part of the holiday and I did miss the Spurs match, which turned out to be quite useful.
Afternoon all.
Christine what did you want to be?
You've been taking A levels Steven?
Afternoon peeps
I passed through lots of different phases. Teacher, bus driver, postman. At one point I wanted to be a firefighter before I realised that it's quite scary.
There was also a time I wanted to be the person who opened and closed curtains in the theatre. Quite a niche role, I would have thought.
Nope. I am hoping for a proper serious safety qualification And Christine says if I fail she is taking my safety column off me
When I was younger, I wanted to be a professional race car driver. (Of course who didn't)
When I got older, I wanted to work with tuning shops and set performance parts for cars, or be a race driving instructor.
And seeing that I drive around daily in a car covered in race car stickers, it's save to say that I haven't grown out of those dreams. - startinggrid.org/…ag/project-kyoko/
Great hours though
Heheh.
also, thinking about childhood tv shows... Postman pat, Fireman Sam, The Magic School Bus... maybe it was kids tv's fault!
Classic, I used to think that those curtains were super heavy and it took a fleet of strongmen to pull them open. (I was 8 though)
Except for the all-nighter marathon shows on occasion
I never really had a good idea of what I'd want to be, apart from I never wanted to be a teacher. Needless to say I became a teacher. And have since been reminded of why I didn't want to do it in the first place.
Does Power Ranger count? I did want to be a Power Ranger. Oh, and then I wanted to be Captain Sisko from Star Trek. ;)
I blame my parents! Being born on a Military base does make you have a skewed view on the world around you....It seems so strangly regimented......
I remember one time we went on a trip to techniquest in cardiff which is a sciency place of scienceness for kids (they say for kids, I still want to go again as it's brilliant) and they had a guy one time we went testing the machines and contraptions. on that day I wanted his job.
Power Ranger definitely counts!
Is it wrong to have absolutely no conception of what I want to do when I'm older?
Gonna break it to you now - caterpillar's a no go.
Sisko was pretty cool, though only once he shaved his head and grew the beard
I'll find a day dangit.
That would mean that you would be speaking Japanese and having somebody else dubbing your voice into passible English.... :P
No, it just means you haven't found it yet
oooh! another one when i was growing up was wanting to be someone who test games but I realised i would be forcibly made to try and break them which would in turn make me hate them. Not good!
You could be a games reviewer, which is more like playing them.
I have no problem with that, as long as I get to pilot the robots. ;)
after the excitement of the olympics i want to work in sports. i dont know how or what, just sports.
This is truth. I spent a year testing racing video games. (My name is in the credits on Forza 3) When I was finished, I couldn't pick up a game controller for like a year. Put a bad taste in my mouth.
What about sports event management? You could probably teach them a thing or two on how NOT to do it
cool!
As a freebie, do not let Malide have a demo run, would be a good start.... :P
Basically when he got command of the Defiant, Sisko became a badass. He was my favorite captain after that.
Very true
I could never take to Sisko or Deep Space 9. It's called Star Trek not Star Park Here for a decade
Voyager was dire and they went farther than anyone else in Starfleet.
Is not the Deflant teh ship in Star Trek NG that keeps getting blown up?
You have to wonder what he wanted to be when he grew. Demolition Derby driver? what did the other drivers want to be?
i have bookmarked the 'job vacancies' page on the NZ Olympic Committee just in case ;)
That's why the Dominion War made things more interesting for me. The epic battles came to us, rather than going out and upsetting other aliens. ;)!
Voyager was the best Star Trek series ever. But i think we are getting about as far off topic as they did
In terms of now, I still want to be a teacher preferably with IT. I think ultimately I'll get it but I kinda feel that it'll happen at the right time in life. Got accepted for a BA teaching course but at 18 it felt really... wrong? Like I had no experience and stuff.
A point can me made (like I did) that he has yet to grow up, Steven.....
This episode?
en.wikipedia.org/…_Next_Generation)
It only got blown up once. Otherwise, it was doing all of the blowing up!
(Good to know we have alot of Trek fans out here.)
Janeway would have kicked Sisko's butt. She is really Kirk in terms of character.
Nope, that was the Enterprise-D, and they were stuck in a temporal singularity there.
The Defiant got blown up during Season 7 of DS9 when a Federation Fleet was looking to recapture Chintoka. Breen energy dampening weapon.
(And yes, I knew that without Wikipedia. -Go useless trivia) lol
"That would be logical."
I wonder what Mr C wanted to be
Well, we know that Mr C was born in front of a computer, so I think it was always to be a geek.
a genius. he suceeded! :)
by that i mean smart, and not a genius from Apple. although he could be one of them too.
I guess he want to move up in the world. so maybe the letter "B" or "A". ?
Maybe Mr C was born to invent the number 3 in binary
Most likely, Sisko and Janeway would have both rammed their ships into one another and the whole thing would have been a draw. Sisko was a combat captain anyway, and Janeway was a scientist that got battle-hardened by Delta Quadrant aliens for seven years. She took no guff by the end of it.
That would make him very clever. Especially if he did it without the number 2
surely C(hex) in binary is 1100?
I can't imagine Mr C was ever a child. Like David Attenborough.
Thats what makes it even more amazing! like spinal tap, it's one more.
Hehehe!
The only thing in Spinal Tap you can conncet Mr. C to a few of the drummer's deaths.... :^p
But mr c's coding skills go up to 11.
No literally, because it's binary too.
Lukeh, this would help: www.escapade.co.u…illar-dlx-cos.asp
oohhhmmyygooodod iknowhatiwantforchristmas
I want that quote on a shirt!
If he wanted to become an anonymous cog in a machine, then he only managed to achieve half of it.
He he
George Bush would approve
Autosport have analysed that williams are the most improved team so far this season. I'm glad it took them lots of analysis to work that out as I could have told them for free
They finally fired Maldie?
I used to want to be a motorsport journalist, but then the internet appeared and now everyone is one ;) jk .
Hello all. I don't remember wanting to be anything growing up which is why I have drifted around doing different jobs. Everyone told me I was going to teach because of my parents' jobs but I knew I definitely could not do that.
Hi Janna.
I found it really difficult growing up to think of myself ever being an adult and working. I think that is why I was so indecisive. Maybe it would have been easier with the internet where you can find out a lot more about the world.
You should take over the trains Janna. I am still amazed by your pinpoint precisisity of the trains last year
Preciseness... even... I'm not sure if thats a word
I think it would have been but I have to say I'm glad I went to university when you still got a grant & didn't have to pay tuition.
So, I took the quiz and it said I should be a Fashion Boutique Owner. I knew I'd taken a wrong turning in my life.
amen. I didn't know what I wanted to do until sophomore year in college. I had to declare a major, so I went with teaching. I do love parts of it very much. I'm trying to focus on that and keep the rest of the bs at bay.
I did want to be a truck driver when I was about 10. My 'friends' laughed at me. I thought it'd be cool. I liked the sound of the engines, the power. I guess I was preparing to love racing.
I'm taking this quiz now. I'm sure my being male won't affect this quiz for women.
I am stuck at the faviurite tv show quetsion as none of them are futurama or arrested development.
No, I'm not sure I know now.
Truck driving is awesome.
Mine: "You Should Be a CSI Investigator!"
Hehe!
Oooh!
Mine cam out as Boutique Owner too and a link to being a makeup artist. Not careers I have previously considered!
There could be a new version of those show, CSI Bassano.
Me too. I demand to work with Diebenkorn.
But which Who song would be the theme tune?!
It doesn't even have the best US crime drama... (despite CSI still being freakin awesome)
What do you know. CSI Investigator. Actually with "the stiffs" that I do work with... It is not that far off.... :P..
Mine too despite me deliberately not picking CSI as my favourite TV program after I saw your comment
There's definitely a SidepodCSI offshoot available here.
Who knew we had so many crimefighters here?
So KIa is actually Lisa from the TV show "Ice Road Truckers?" :P
Sidepodsuperheros.
I didn't either.
I'm beginning to think the list of answers are limited and my dreams are now shattered
I think you mean
SCIdepodcast
CSIdepodcast, surely.
"Who Are You?" as the first line is "I woke up in a Soho doorway, the policeman knew my name" and we know what a bad influence Bassano is ;)
We're heading into a future made up solely of detectives and clothes shops!
That's what my head thought. My fingers had a different view
I can't even defend that one, Amy gave away my secrets
Ahh. 'Tis often the case.
The quiz won't go to the second page when I hit "continue", so I guess I've hit a career dead end.
The Boutique market has been saturated
Maybe it means you should have a career break
Dectective Jordan F1 here. I am requesting a transfer into the "Balde Runner" unit.
Just rememeber, "if you are not cop you are little people."
oh, it works in Safari. Didn't like Chrome.
Meant "Blade Runner" Unit.
So my dream job is volunteering. Not a lot of money in that.
I'm now tutoring - which is the best part of it all ;)
So you are perfect for a career where no-one pays you to work. The good thing is you will never struggle for work in that career
I would quite like to be Batman at some point in my life
Yes! I'll be tutoring more again soon, and that's a great fall back plan if there's no teaching job for me in Chicago next year. I'll start my last year here next week. Whew! I can try to do some voice over work, too, but I need to get better at that.
Superman!
Ohhh I'd have to learn to fly then though, at least with batman I can jump about
You could try getting bitten by a spider?
It also means that to justify allm of us detective, Dectective Roy, that we are supposed to arrest Kai for Tax Evasion.... :^P
It would gave to be radioactive. I wonder if pets at home do them
I'd rather be Iron Man. Way more wealthy, and also gets a flight suit. Winner.
That works. No radiating spiders, and flying without having to expend too much energy.
Might be safer being Thor. All you have to do is find the right stick to pick up in the woods (really!)
and you also get to be sherlock holmes too, win win
Hi all :)
I'd rather be in space. But there are no space-travelling superheroes, so I suppose that's a no-go...
Hey, story idea?
(In other news, the [Unread Comments] feature has started working again) :)
I'd love to have that fore-sight ability when racing. That would be sweet.
There's a Thunderbird in space.
I think being Batman would be best. All the money in the world. A huge business empire. And all those cool toys to play with.
Guys be the Green Hornet. You get the coolest theme song of them all and Bruce Lee is your Sidekick....
Dan Dare?
Silver Surfer doesn't count? I guess you mean cool space-traveling superheroes, huh?
Where do I find this great source material?
Sherlock when racing: "chicane coming up. car ahead. inside line available. he will go wide, tyres graining fast and grip already gone. Check ahead to see a slow bechicale. Stay out the way, slipstream past, take the lead. No harm done. Victory."
Pastor when racing: CORNER!! GAP!!! WOOOOOO ah not again
Cough "Super -whatever" Cough Superman, Supergirl, Super dog (just made that up)....
*slow vehicle
That is cool except your dad is your boss. And if he is not happy with you he can literally ground you
Only if you come back though.
Bruce Lee as your sidekick must be about as cool as it can be
I bet you Pastor's most common thought is. "Why didn't that work?!"
He would be PERFECT on Arrested Development.
"I've made a huge mistake..."
No you didn't
en.wikipedia.org/…ypto_the_Superdog
He can send your brothers to get you
[On keeping his seat at Williams for a fifth year] "Is he funny or something?"
"him?"
So actual career decisions aside, does anyone still have any life-dreams that they still hold onto?
Superman *came from* space. As far as I'm aware, little of the story (at least the bits with the characters I know) occurs *in* space. If I were a superhero, I'd want to be *in* space...just to fulfil my childhood ambition of being the medical officer on the Mars station
Believe it or not I knew there was a third Super- and my mind could not remeber Superboy
I guess I could be a Wenlock hunter, I've been practicing
imissthecomments.…-wenlock-hunting/
#PluggingLike Giggles
I now know what I want to do. I want to design myself a McLaren
content.usatoday.…ar/1#.UDEerqO07KA
Having now googled gob bluth im in a fit of laughter just at seeing images of him. God 2013 cant come quick enough
Loads
I just want Frank Williams to just admit. "I just like money, ok? He's got alot of it." about Pastor.
If he just said that, I'd be ok with Maldonado crashing his way through F1, since we're admitting the truth.
I still find it bewildering that Rubens thinks that Pastor has crashed less this year that last year, I'm still trying to see if that's true...
The whole 60's series of Superman / Batman Comics had them going though space and on to tons of various planets, well when Batamn and Robin where not time travelling that is....
There should be at least one human Mars mission in about ten years time
I'd wanted to be a test driver for Mclaren sportscars when I was younger...
I'll move next summer, finally, and hopefully work with kids, mentoring/life coaching, teaching, and do voice over work if I can get jobs, and hopefully meet the right guy and get married and adopt a child.
That's all, nothing big.
That's been really fun. Thanks for sharing the pics.
Teacher! It will happen, one day. When the time is right :)
Sounds like 2013 will be busy
Hopefully. :)
Since almost everytime I've gone out to the races this year, my car has exploded or something, I feel that 2013 owes me more track time than what I know what to do with.
It was fun taking them. I was going to go again today for another route but it was overcast this morning and that turned into a thunderstorm.
Tons, I even make mention of one of them as a setting for my own Desert Island on the Pacific Atoll of Bikini in a blog post...
underpressureofso…and-of-jordan-f1/
Anyplace that has Aircraft Carriers, Batleships and Submarines that you can dive to has to be awesome....
I don't want to spoil your dream, but don't, really don't < /bitterness>
Go ice-diving on Neptune to look for alien fungus (although that's wildly unrealistic)
hehe
I get that sentiment, believe me. But in the right school or organization it can be good-ish. :)
Kids everywhere need to know the Bluth family chicken dance.
I slighlty misread that
Anyplace that has Aircraft Carriers, Batleships and Submarines that you can drive has to be awesome
My version sounds a lot more fun and I don't need to get wet
You have your marching orders, Lukeh.
It could take a while to get there and slightly longer for a car dealer to evolve there. Although the step from fungus to car dealer is not always that big
ha!
"Has anyone in this school even seen a chicken?"
Don't insult fungi; car dealers can't photosynthesise using nothing but radiation and CO2
I found I spent too much time (all of it) planning / doing admin for unappreciative kids & managers, who didn't understand the unique challenge of teaching maths. But I'd definitely agree that it can have some great parts to it, hence why I'm tutoring now. (Really trying not to bring the tone down) :)
Not so fast there Brij, all you just might need might be a Canadian Work Permit.......
http://www.neptunecanada.ca/
If it's come down to super-powers, I don't think anyone's mentioned Jedi - that would be my choice.
*teacher hug* playing Kate Bush & Peter Gabriel in the background, Don't Give Up. You still have us.
Well, the security at naval bases might be a little hairy.....
Classic.
:)
I remembered I wanted to go to the Fashion Institute of Technology. They had an interior design program I wanted to take.
Nevermind, I'll find a Canadian to marry. I'm pretty sure I can find an adventurous Canadian in the next two decades...
I think Jordan will volunteer
Is my memory going or did I answer a question on a Neptune GP on the sidepodspace sidepodradio show?
Does he like ice diving and alien hunts?
is the pub still open?
Teaching has always been suggested to me as a career choice, but I'm uncertain about taking it up. What is it like as a job?
MotoGP at Indy, warm up show underway. Race on the hour
I heard that it's been crash insane this weekend.
Quali looked that way. Stoner's racing with his ankle fractured today
Shhh, they're trying not to bring the tone down!
Stoner hasn't taken any painkillers. These guys are a different breed
"Other than the normal stuff available"
So, neurofen probably
Certainly is. We were discussing what you wanted to be when you grew up.
There's an ice diving site about 1.5 hours away from me. There's a massive lake 5min utes away from me where the weater is freezing all teh time.
As to aliens. It depends on the alien, I guess.
Am guessing it's not a pizza chef ;)
You rarely see it that bad or spectacular in speedway, looks all scary...
If you come to Edinburgh, pubs are open until 3am until the end of the month (festival liquor licenses, God help us all)
Nicky Hayden's crash looked horrible. A couple of broken bones in his hand and was knocked out. The other effect of the crash is that it sent his sister into labour
Must be heaving!
yeah, probably best as an email question. :)
Late licence gives you longer to be a bad influence
are you in edinburgh then? have you caught up with brij?
There's always a late pub where I am ;)
oh wait... i thought bassano typed that. i'm not drunk honest.
hehe
I bet dollars to donuts that mr. C's dream job was to be a stage technician for the Bangles, I wonder if he knows that they are still on tour?
anonymous.
I'd love to do the Edinburgh Festival one year though
in my head, you're already there :)
That is on my Life List but I have to wait till I'm a bit better at that kind of thing first.
How much interesting stuff grows under the lake? (I've got my eye on a uni in Norway, because they offer marine botany courses that include ice diving.)
It is. The city's population has doubled for the month.
Make sure you book accommo in advance (or if you have a friend with a flat, crash on their couch). Hotels in this place charge insane prices for August.
I am sure it is one of those things you just have to practice, practice and practice....
I refer you to earlier, and let you draw your own conclusions ;)
Touché monsieur.
What kind of thing? Going to comedy shows or beating all the flyer-givers away as you walk down the street?
you'd be awful. too many people, too many choices!
ooooh definitely.
I've heard. It's the only thing putting me off. One year.,.
Are you planning on doing stand up? Or book readings. Live F1 Minutes? Festival sidepodradio
I've always dreamed of taking courses in Stockholm, 'cause it's awesome, and almost free. :)
And in Sweden
Gods knows, as the lake inquestion is called "Ontario" and has been recorded as going down as deep as 823 feet.
I do know that there is a sandly botom at the every western tip at 70 feet, with a shipwreck... The Storms just rip up teh bottm in that area, although.
Another wreck is in 115 feet. Has a tiller instead of a rudder, and a ton of zebra mussells.
Bradley Smith joins MotoGP next year, good lad!
#predictable
Isn't it only free for Swedes? I know in Norway it's free for Norwegians but not foreigners.
Ooh, interesting! I shall have to dive it (when I've bought a dry suit).
Last I checked they were instituting some kind of fee for foreigners going full time, but it was so much less than here that it seemed doable.
Cor, it would be the worst stand up ever!
Is the course in Swedish?
To the point you;d be sittng down
Just so you know, the shoreline on the northern side is 319 km long, so you might have tons of places to go diving....
So what do you need to get better at before you go?
There were courses in English.
Practise would make you better. Maybe you should tell a joke in every podcast from now on to help you improve
Hmm. I just know that it's all ridiculously expensive because I only get cheap uni rates in Africa, and I'm bored of Africa now.
You can always take a Swedish refresher course by watching episodes of the Muppet Show.
Just seen a tweet saying Ferrari have sacked Massa. I assume this is nonsense
Who would they replace him with?
hehe
No that's how stories actually start I think you'll find
#GMM
Years of following football on twitter has reduced me to assume everything on twitter is just nonsense.
Am I right w my timezones that the film watch happens in an hour?
That's got to get you into the cooking pot in Kai's eyes like the chciken...
Not that I am comparing Kai to the Swedish Chief - I am sure she does a better job of cooking...
I must be off. The comedy club across the street with its Jew jokes awaits my attention. Have a fun evening everyone!
(And enjoy those Swedish refresher courses ;) )
It's on the 25th, Kai. You've got a week.
Kind of
6 days and an hour
No. It happens on Saturday
Bye Brij
Bye Brij.
I'm off to stare at screens. Pray I don't go insane, please.
Next Saturday
Just to be clear next Saturday around now the thread opens then in an hour the film starts
If I did my math collectly, you are looking at 3 pm EDT start to the sidepodfilm and comments open at 2 pm EDT, on Saturday, Auugst 25th, 2012, Kai....
Assuming you are in relativilty eastern location in the States Kai. Pretty sure you guys do not have Atlantic nor Newfie time zones down there....
:)
ha! I have the wrong DAY? Oh boy, I have too much on my mind.
I like the eagerness though :)
hehe.
Kai was going to go from "Days of Thunder" to Day of Boredom....:P
It turned in to great puggage for those who don't know about it
They are a nice breed of dog after all
Wait, no
:)
Sounds like there was a huge accident in NASCAR. Mark Martin hit the start of the pit wall at speed and headed down the pit road totally out of control
:(
i've chanced turning my mac on now i'm home to say hello to you all. if i suddenly disappear, don't blame me, blame stupid apple.
I thought Apple was all shiny and wonderful
did they not take a look at the problem for you?
they were. I'm having a bad apple day.
Are you saying you are a bad apple, Lou?
ahaha nooo i live miles away from an apple shop. can't do anything till i get to bluewater, and that's friday.
i'm sying i have a bad apple :)
Have you booked a slot?
There's so many bad apples that you need to make a reservation to get them to fix it?
was sup?
oooh, that autocorrect has to go, right now.
Geniuses need appointments
I keep getting told here that getting a Mac would solve all my problems
:)
It freaks me out when there's something wrong with my only computer.
not yet, am going to tomorrow once i've slept on it and decided i really can't do anything.
I guess it's best to get it sorted before term starts
Honestly, I would swear that green flag racing lasted all of five minutes at the nascar race....
I watched the end of the Nationwode race last night and they barely managed a minute of green flag racing between 20 minute long cautions
how is that entertaining?
This is a series that races Utes :)
"oh, the stock car raees go round and round, round and round, round and round"......
i can't laugh at other sports anymore since i enjoyed ball gymnastics at the olympics.
went to my aunts today (the one with the super fast internet), was there from 7am -6:30pm.. was that enough time to download a film (sidepodfilm infact) and mountain lion? no. no it wasn't. you would have thought so right... but no. the internet gods hate me. Firstly the film half downloaded then the internet dropped, so i had to redownload as the film corrupted. THEN the internet dropped again... this went on for about 2 hours. I reset the router, turned off the mac and then on again, did all the things i do to stop it dropping out or not letting me connect to the wifi and it kinda fixed the problem.. so i thought.
so an hour passes and i've given up on the film by this point, then i attempt to download mountain lion (as the connection has stopped dropping) then OH connection drops and wont let me on the wifi for hours.. then, a few hours later i try again and then oh there is something wrong with the download.. and ergh. I give up. I'm going into the apple store and a nice man will do it for me. I can't do this anymore it shouldn't be so difficult to download the solution to the problem they gave me with lion!!!
plus i've paid for the film and mountain lion.. neither of which i have... who said downloading things was the future!! give me CDs any day!!!
:)
Fair point
you reeeeallllyyy needed this rant didn't you?
oooh, bugger. did you /could you try plugging an ether net lead into the router instead? won't help if the BB connection drops out tho
What gave you that idea?
:)
It wasn't. Hence my tweet suggesting they show a movie during the caution
Why would you be watching a race like that...
Oh, Red Sox beat the Yankees yesterday.....Answered my own question....
downloading is the future, but only if you live in the future. i wouldn't/couldn't go back to CD's now, but we've spent the last 5 years preparing for it.
how is it so popular though?
Lou, that sucks. #helpful?
Sometimes I wonder if the ISPs do it deliberately
I think this is precisely why we can't be entirely based on downloadable things though. at least with physical things you *have* it, if that makes sense.
Downloading < discs every time
last time i tried that i lost internet for a week :( I hate country slow internet.
While they still manufacture them, that is
many easily-entertained people love it, I guess? Maybe they don't care if they're not really racing, as long as the cars are going around and around? I have no idea. I can't take the whole marketing approach, just, bleck.
one visit to my house and you would feel my frustration 1mb of internet max is a joke
Because I kept reading tweets about it.
Only baseball coverage I have had all week is Little League World Series
Just be thankful you don't have to use a 56k modem
I think the long cautions gives the redneck fans time to figure out where they left the fridge so they can get more beer
this is another issue i have with downloadable only future - the level of internet connections/access isp's provide make it impossible to be solely reliant on downloads. it's impossible to rely on it when the UK is so rubbish with broadband especially compared to other nations.
I see tweets about the x factor but have never been compelled to watch it
why can't we? pay for decent broadband packages, live near a decent exchange, buy decent equipment. i have no use/time for physical media in my life anymore, not at home or in the office.
sorry for the rant. It's been a bad day. Oh and im now commenting on my phone as by pressing post as the internet dropped!
ranting is always good to get it out of your system a bit better plus lets be honest - we all love a rant really :)
The whole world cannot live near an exchange. There is not enough parking for one thing
For Lou and anyone else interested in Film Club Saturday:

Hurry.
Nothing wrong with a rant
when we move house. internet availability is priority #1.
is it as easy as that though? look at lou's internet, she lives in the country and her ISP makes it impossible to provide a solid, fast internet connection because of this
How many #1 priorities do you have? I thought lack of extraneous sounds that interfere with podcasting was #1
depends how important it is. if i lived in the countryside, satellite broadband would be the first thing i invested it.
Rule 1.1: No owls
1, 1.1, 1.1.1 - thats how updates work :)
No point recording podcasts without internets!
mum and dad have been here since before the internet existed! we havr been told not till 2015 will we get 20mb speeds. Joy.
I'm just annoyed today becase had I been able to just buy the cd of both the film and mountain lion I would not feel like I had wasted my money because their opersting system destroyed my connectivity. So apple can fix this before I loose my temper or burst into tears :)
Send them out via the royal mail, we'll get them within a few weeks/months :)
yes, please. We feel your pain.
internet comes before everything, we may not be podcasting forever, but we'll always need internet.
Haha!
Just record what you want to say onto a (very retro) tape, then leave everyone who sends you a letter a voicemail by playing back the sound.
Forever figures in your choice of house?
then you can put stickers in too. win win ;)
They'll probably always need to live somewhere
wherever we live, whatever we do, the internet will be vital. the only thing more important is power and you can generate your own if you had to.
Get you one of them bikes.
I want to know what happened to the plan for us all to move to Finland where the internet is like magic
Rockall needs a wind turbine grant
I like the idea that if Sidepodcast was around in the 60's it would be a pirate radio station, literally from rockall.
was thinking more solar, but if you're volunteering...
:)
Or a few hundred hyperactive hamsters
Wind turbines are the worst invention ever. They should be banished from the planet
I have no money really and the parents were tempted to go back to dial up the other day, so I doubt theyd pay. the line will only give us 1mb whatever package we get. Bt suck!
How do you implement shifts in a hamster community.
Worst job ever!
Not doing this one again :)
I like the sound of that. Next sidepodradio could be done like that
If that doesn't explain how slow your net is I don't know how else you can express it
I'm good to go. Let's do it.
Wouldn't 3G be better or is that poor as well?
yeah i know. downloading isn't for you, no question. but equally physical media isn't for me either.
i've moved enough boxes of books and cd's to never want to do that again, and now i'll never have to.
What happens at night?
it gets dark (usually).
You do move quite often though. We'd all hate physical media that much if we knew the first names of all of the local removal people
not in some parts of Finland, in summer.
Solar makes more sense than wind even in Scotland unbelievable as that sounds. For night use you store it in a KERS system
Hehe, if we knew the names of the removal people, it wouldn't be a problem!
before the last round, i shall use the opportunity to plug my photos from random wandering about in an abbey and a castle today because they were cool :)
www.flickr.com/ph…2157631142694546/
I agree it will be an influencing factor when I move out. But until then I hate this thing :)
Without the kinetics, I imagine
ah I'm just jealous of your lovely Internet and ability to live without physical media :)
absolutely. i've also been dreaming of a physical media free life since mp3's were invented. i'm finally there now (so long as i don't need windows ever again).
And if you do, you'll just get me to get it anyway :)
Well you could feed the solar energy into a Stirling engine which could power a flywheel via a clutch
Ohh speaking of the night, everyone should have a look for the ISS tonight! It's so cool watching it pass over, it's one of my new favfav things
There's an engine that runs on money? Sheesh, I thought Diesel was expensive!
you're not allowed media either ;)
Seems to me like there'd be wasted energy in there - friction, sound, etc, ...
See if you can spot the Thunderbird up there.
We have a clear evening!! finally! )
:):)
There always is, it's inevitable
I think his name is John Tracy ;)
*hums theme*
now i want to be a thunderbird.
Not surprized as your planned solar unit will not produce electricity at that point. Sort of the reason why I am against solar energy. You still need all other forms of energy to act as a primary system for 50% of the time anyway....
Nuclear energy, on the hand....
It will run on solar power which is free. Stirling engines are incredible. You can even power a little on with the heat above a cup of tea
Hehe, I wasn't sure how many people would know that. I underestimate people :)
I used to pretend to be a Thunderbird :)
i can't generate nuclear power by myself though?
That leads us nicely to the original question, I think!
Ten minute warning, friends.
Unless you move to North Korea but I hear their broadband is awful
is that what you wanted to be when you were older? :)
hehe
oh, one final thing I remembered I wanted to do; I wanted to meet Bugs Bunny. I was gutted to find out he wasn't real.
:)
don't go to disneyland paris, goofy swears at you in french
#childhoodcrushed
which one?
He was named after John Glenn who was the first American to orbit the Earth. His 4 brothers were named after Mercury astronauts as well
but we know you know everything anyways Steven ;)
Sacre bleu!
you need to go to the other Disney, I spent the whole day with the little mermaid cause I just wouldn't leave her alone.
Bad Goofy.
I always felt sorry for the two Mercury astronauts who didn't get Thunderbirds brothers named after them. Wonder what happened to Wally and Deke Tracy
Did you know that CSI's Gil Grissom was named after the NASA's astronaut Gus Grissom.
Mermaid stalker!
:) :)
The Little Mermaid has been replaced by JB? :)
Never watched any version of CSI. Virgil Tracy was also named after Virgil Ivan (Gus) Grissom
hehe she didn't mind, apparently I just sat next to her asking her questions about being a mermaid. Mum was there too :)
I guessed - as he wasn't in your list of one's that'd missed out
always a stalker :) hehe
This almost needs a session of its own
Virgil was always my favourite because he played the piano. Oh, and the Thunderbird 2 thing also.
I liked Virgil because I was able to rotate round a door to pretend I was getting into T2.
*pictures it* so cute.
Thuderbird 2 is awesome even if its aerodynamics is all wrong. Gerry Anderson knew nothing about rockets though. Watch what happens when any of them land
It's a wonder the thunderbird movie never made it to SidepodFilm Club
Well granted you might have to borrow the american college football field at one of Chicago's Universities or college's they still might have the reactor bunker in the basement....
It's where they had the first ever controllable nuclear chain reaction going, in the early days ofthe Manhatten Project...
*ponders*
haha! Not really it was stupid kid questions like, why do you sing all the time? And whats it like not having legs lol
Yet
yess!!
As long as Christine never makes us watch batman vs robin
*shudders*
You don't need aerodynamics, when you are flying on wires ;)
Bet she wanted to say the worst thing about not having legs is I can't walk away
Hehehe.
Jonathan Frakes has a lot to answer for
:D
:)
Gerry Anderson should've hired Gary Anderson.
hahaha!!!
Thanks for the chatter, everyone. Love having the Hangout back.
Is it time to be saying bye? If so bye.
Riker did Thunderbirds??
Crossing streams
Cheers Christine and Mr C
Bye all
Yup
