Sidepodcast Hangout - Mostly As

What's your typing speed? (And other online tests)

Published by Christine Blachford

This week, we were fondly reminded of the time we all took an online typing test. Mr C was staggered by my quite impressive words per minute, but Amy was even faster than I was. The Hangout question this week, then, is firstly, what is your typing speed, and secondly, are there any other online tests you've taken that are either ridiculous or useful, or anywhere in between? And do you take any of the results seriously?

    talofa!

I thought I'd best take advantage of my last hangout in this country for a while ;)

This afternoon I am mostly watching the athletics on iPlayer so I can be totes knowledgable for the Olympics. What's everyone else at?

I am procrastinating washing the things I need to take to Europe with me, also procrastinating writing a cheat-sheet for the guy who is filling in for me at work (which he needs tomorrow, oops) I had most of it done but then my computer froze and Auto Document Recovery was not my friend.

I am also downloading that Faster, Higher, Stronger thingy you mentioned yesterday :)

  • Christine 15/07/2012 at 14:04:50

I am also downloading that Faster, Higher, Stronger thingy you mentioned yesterday :)

It was good, but took itself far too seriously. Am impressing Mr C with my facts today though :)

  • Will^ 15/07/2012 at 14:05:43

This morning I was tidying, & gardening, but I'm now watching NCIS s7 e14 :)

  • Amy 15/07/2012 at 14:05:45

Amy came along the next day and beat me:

I was cleaning out my hard drive the other day and I found a video I filmed of me back then getting 110wpm but I deleted it so I cannot share it. I need to transcribe more Joe to get my skills back heh.

  • Amy 15/07/2012 at 14:06:11

I almost had two of them downloaded but they were also victims of the computer freeze, when I restarted it they tried to auto resume and then threw a spaz because I'm not in the UK.

  • Ryan 15/07/2012 at 14:06:35

Ohh yes, and I've timed the sit down to conveniently coincide with a certain Hangout.

  • Janna 15/07/2012 at 14:09:16

I'm listening to An Aside with Joe and looking at the ironing that needs doing. Also, looking out of the window as it's St Swithun's day when the weather today will be the same for the next 40 days (apparently). So far this means a bit of sun and then grey cloud

  • Christine 15/07/2012 at 14:09:45

  • Janna 15/07/2012 at 14:10:56

We've had much worse of late, so I'll take 40 days of that!

Indeed, I went to a bbq yesterday and spent most of it standing under gazebos trying not to sink into a waterlogged lawn.

    Bought!

  • Amy 15/07/2012 at 14:12:22

    Bought!

yay! its a really good book because it teaches you stuff but is actually really interesting at the same time. it got me thinking about buying tickets to events that I had absolutely no interest in before I read it. Might have to give myself a refresher on the flight over because its been a while since I finished it :)

  • Leigh O'Gorman 15/07/2012 at 14:12:50

A bit of bad news for circuit lovers I'm afraid. It appears the doors may soon be about to close at Portimao.

    :(

  • Journeyer 15/07/2012 at 14:13:36

Hi everyone! 73 WPM for me. Not bad, not bad at all. First time I did that test too, methinks. I don't recall it before.

True. Very happy with it. But you and Amy... are just on another planet. They should have a sport for that - speed typing! Just like speed stacking. :)

As with a lot of ventures in Portugal, they're broke.

Oh, that's just sad. Never even got to see F1 race on it.

  • Amy 15/07/2012 at 14:16:39

    Your speed was: 110wpm.

You made 1 mistake, your mistake is shown in bold text:

I knew it was that damn semi-colon that ruined my attempt earlier in the week! Even with the typical asdf jkl; hand position for some reason I can never find it.

    Hope everyone is well!

I suppose it must take a tiny bit longer, because it's read-process-type, rather than thought-process-type.

Hello! just tried the typing test - 63wpm. Better than i thought. I'm so rubbish at typing things up that aren't from my own head.

My problem exactly - if I am typing my thoughts I can go faster (depending on how fast my brain is working). My score is 59 - I was saving it to see whether it was good / bad / worth brushing under the mat.

  • Mr C 15/07/2012 at 14:26:13

this afternoon, i am mostly looking into new fonts to purchase. currently tempted by Tablet Gothic:

    www.myfonts.com/f…er/tablet-gothic/

It is a grotesque sans serif that looks to the future of publishing with a clear understanding of its history, and reminiscences that go back to nineteenth century Britain and Germany.

retina display's will be the ruining of me.

in my first year of high school my typing teacher used to spend hours in class giving us sheets of lyrics to songs and making us type along while she played them on the stereo. Looking back I think that was a good way to learn how to be quick!

I think that's true for everyone. Personally, my technique is to try to memorize the next phrase I'm typing so I can focus on making sure I'm hitting the right keys. It works as long as there's no tough words - in which case I look at the word as I type and hope I'm hitting the right keys. :)

  • GadgetGav 15/07/2012 at 14:26:58

Did you get the Retina MBP? (another time saving acronym!)

  • Christine 15/07/2012 at 14:27:10

It is a grotesque sans serif that looks to the future of publishing with a clear understanding of its history, and reminiscences that go back to nineteenth century Britain and Germany.

Describing something as grotesque doesn't seem like a good selling point, even if it is a font.

  • Christine 15/07/2012 at 14:27:37

  • Mr C 15/07/2012 at 14:28:29

not yet. just the ipad3 at the moment, but retina being as good as printed text means revisiting fonts previously discarded as being useless for screen, because retina isn't really a screen at all.

  • lou 15/07/2012 at 14:29:12

Describing something as grotesque doesn't seem like a good selling point, even if it is a font.

It's an unfortunate word alright. Technically, the meaning of "grotesque" has gotten somewhat skewered over the years to the point where it doesn't quite mean what it actually means anymore.

  • Mark 15/07/2012 at 14:29:17

I love the concept of a typing teacher!

officially the class was called TIM - Text and Information Management. But it was really just typing haha and I only took it because I had a gap in my class schedule that I didn't want to fill with Chemistry. Learning to do it properly back then I think has set me up well for life, although I still rest my wrists on the desk so if she was here she'd hit me on the back of a hand with a ruler.

  • GadgetGav 15/07/2012 at 14:29:53

I love the concept of a typing teacher!

I remember borrowing my sister's touch typing book when she was doing a secretarial course and trying it on an electric typewriter. I was doing A levels for Engineering at the time, so although I wasn't very good, I didn't think it mattered. When would I need to type, let alone touch type?

    How wrong was I..?!?

  • Leigh O'Gorman 15/07/2012 at 14:34:58

Not sure if anyone saw the fallout from the NASCAR Nationwide race last night. A slow driver who was 33 laps down in a 200 lap race (pretty much on pace) baulked the race leader Kevin Harvick on the penultimate lap, allowing Brad Kaselowski through.

Harvick wasn't awfully kind in the post-race interviews...

Happens in motorsport, but this was one of those things that should have been avoided. Cope (the blocker) was a clear 30-40 mph slower in the corners. Jaw dropping really.

I'm Amy from the Internet, it's only right that I should get such a prize.

  • GadgetGav 15/07/2012 at 14:39:46

We had posters on the walls for them! I used to go home & enjoy my Amiga 500 a LOT more

I think at the time I had a Spectrum. I got an Amiga by the end of my degree though

  • Leigh O'Gorman 15/07/2012 at 14:40:58

Right folks, cheers for the chat. Time for to head outside for some fresh air and Sunday dinner. :)

    See you later.

I am trying to behave and concentrate on something important and Christine goes and opens a hangout. Have you no consideration? I should be able to quickly browse the internet and find nothing of interest so I can concentrate on what I am meant to be doing.

It has never happened yet but maybe one day

  • GadgetGav 15/07/2012 at 14:42:56

A tree just fell down in my garden! No reason, it's not windy. Very odd...

  • Christine 15/07/2012 at 14:42:57

I'm not sure I want to watch the athletics anymore. I just realised the 5000 metres is the same as a 5k and they are doing it in 15 minutes. I did a 5k today. Took me... longer.

  • Jordan F1 15/07/2012 at 14:43:16

OMG that is next week. How did it get from being next year to next week already?

  • Amy 15/07/2012 at 14:46:27

    corrected for you.

I am still quite sure Korea used up allll my luck. I'm still not over that, I sometimes just randomly start thinking about it and have to pinch myself to convince myself that it actually happened.

  • Christine 15/07/2012 at 14:47:21

The real question is how can you have missed out on all the counting down!?

  • Amy 15/07/2012 at 14:47:59

Perhaps I need to nag you more.

I think so. When I get back from England I fully intend on starting up the couch to 5k and sticking to it because the weather will be much more running-friendly than it is now.

I think my problem over the last year was I have been having 1-2 months between runs and trying to pick up from where I left off each time I go out and its been too hard so I quit. I need to go back to the beginning again!

  • Jordan F1 15/07/2012 at 14:48:25

  • Steven Roy 15/07/2012 at 14:53:59

Reading back through the comments it looks like Amy has the opposite of my semi-colon problem. She can never find it and I keep tripping over it.

Tip for Amy. If you want a semi-colon aim for the apostrophe. Works all the time for me. Now I need a tip to find the apostrophe

  • Christine 15/07/2012 at 14:54:04

    not on crazy british keyboards

  • Mark 15/07/2012 at 14:58:16

Isn't # the one you get when you press Shift-3?

Are you using an American keyboard? Or a different layout in some way?

  • Lukeh 15/07/2012 at 14:58:44

    Hello Mr Lukeh.

I would have turned up on time but I got bored watching the moto gp and went for a spontaneous drive on what is a surprisingly nice day for July these days. All driven out now though,

  • Journeyer 15/07/2012 at 14:59:11

Are you using an American keyboard? Or a different layout in some way?

    Using an American keyboard.

  • Steven Roy 15/07/2012 at 14:59:19

I suppose it must take a tiny bit longer, because it's read-process-type, rather than thought-process-type.

A tiny bit? Takes me an awful lot longer because I need to be looking at 3 different places at the same time. Need to look at the text and what I have typed and the keys. If it is in my head I can just look at the keys. Much, much easier and faster.

Typing from text is like driving and reading a book at the same time.

  • Christine 15/07/2012 at 14:59:33

  • Amy 15/07/2012 at 15:00:13

    Using an American keyboard.

I really struggled with a UK keyboard the first time I used one. I guess I assumed since NZ uses British English more than American our keyboards would be the same, but the need to fit in the different currency symbols ruins EVERYTHING.

  • Steven Roy 15/07/2012 at 15:00:29

Isn't # the one you get when you press Shift-3?

    Shift-3 is £

  • Lukeh 15/07/2012 at 15:00:31

he felt left out clearly :)

I'm not sure what online tests i've done... I think I did one before were it said my iq was something stupid like 146 when it's clearly not. Pinch of salt was very much taken

I worked for a French company and their keypboards are weird. Apart from all the option keys with accented letters the top line is AZERTY instead of QWERTY

How I wish, but no. Would be cool, though.

HAHAHA! Well, it would make for a good touring car... :D

have you had much else to organise in the wedding? cars are the only responsibility my brother has for his haha

My fiancee is the project manager. I do the legwork. Hahaha! I do get a say on key decisions, though (like headcount and buffet choices).

i didn't know you could choose a car. i think any wedding i've been too, they just drove their own car home.

Definitely no cars required at ours.

The best was to confuse Ralf is to do something totally unexpected like braking for a corner.

I'm very excited for our buffet. The prawns are crazy-delicious. :) I'm pretty sure I'll end up not eating much in the dinner itself, though.

Must be a culture thing. Here, the groom and bride need to have a white wedding car. It takes the bride to the church, then the couple to the reception.

every wedding I've seen/been to has wedding cars but they don't necessarily need to be white, they just shove some ribbon on the front so everyone knows they're for a wedding.

  • Christine 15/07/2012 at 15:13:51

You can do that, but, seeing as you can't even be bothered to finish a typing test, I didn't think you'd be interested in getting certified as a diver beforehand!

And that's not the best part. It's scheduled on our anniversary as a couple. And we just found out yesterday that it will be 64 years to the day when our grandparents got married! Very, very happy with our choice of date. :)

I bet it's linked to a Schumacher day somewhere. The day the Schumacher family chose Michael over Ralf perhaps

  • Journeyer 15/07/2012 at 15:19:36

It's usually just 3 weeks. But they get the extra week this year due to the Olympics.

  • Journeyer 15/07/2012 at 15:21:19

yeah, the bridesmaids and my dad can walk, i'll meet them there.

  • Amy 15/07/2012 at 15:23:42

its weird they're having extra for the Olympics considering theres a race while the Olympics are on then they have five weeks off after they're over.

I really have no idea how women put up with heels. Just looking at them puts me off balance. That one woman we saw at goodwood with them on, her centre of gravity must've been astounding

  • Kai 15/07/2012 at 15:27:01

I worked for a French company and their keypboards are weird. Apart from all the option keys with accented letters the top line is AZERTY instead of QWERTY

Site suggestion: Make links open in a new tab / window by default. (Is that something you can set from your end?)

Clicking a link and having to come back always screws up the live streams for me on Safari.

Where do they put them? One extra per row?

No there are 2 on the right of the second row and one on the top row on the right. Basically I treated the right of the keyboard as the danger zone. www.worldofspectr…nternational.html

I know I can "right click" to say open in new tab, but I always forget. I wondered if it was something the site can force the default on. I'm sure some sites seem to open new tabs rather than change the page in the current tab.

Just me trying to be lazy...

I must have just gone to a crummy school. I wonder if they've gotten electronic whiteboards in the 9 years since I left :D

it took my school two years to put them in every classroom (but it was stupidly expensive to go to and they loved their gadgets)

the school i did my dissertation with already had stuff like that just before ipads came out. I imagine they're doing it now, although this is for special education needs I must say

it's very cool. if every student has a tablet, a teacher can draw on everyone's screen in a class.

While we're talking about future devices / input devices. I'm guessing the answer has got to be the glasses route...

I imagine the glasses having a kind of Microsoft Kinect sensor in them which focuses on the hands.

So when I want to write something I can simply type on the desk in front of me, if I look down a keyboard would be projected there.

Somebody hands me a piece of paper, I can draw on it either for real or with a stylus or my finger if I use the stylus / finger route then the only person who can see my notes is me.

  • lou 15/07/2012 at 16:16:35

That's awesome. Schools here are public- funded by taxes from the town, or private - funded by tuition paid by each student's family. The community usually thinks the school budgets are too high, including our salaries. So, as public servants we just have to be happy with what we can get. I push for technology bc it's so useful in helping kids, so efficient. And that's why I recorded all of the text I use in class this past year, for any kids who have trouble decoding words visually.
