Sidepodcast Hangout - Mostly As
What's your typing speed? (And other online tests)
Published by Christine Blachford
This week, we were fondly reminded of the time we all took an online typing test. Mr C was staggered by my quite impressive words per minute, but Amy was even faster than I was. The Hangout question this week, then, is firstly, what is your typing speed, and secondly, are there any other online tests you've taken that are either ridiculous or useful, or anywhere in between? And do you take any of the results seriously?

Hello!
HELLO!
Afternoon.
For reference to the question, the original conversation is here:

Amy came along the next day and beat me:

And the test itself:

talofa!
I thought I'd best take advantage of my last hangout in this country for a while ;)
This afternoon I am mostly watching the athletics on iPlayer so I can be totes knowledgable for the Olympics. What's everyone else at?
I am procrastinating washing the things I need to take to Europe with me, also procrastinating writing a cheat-sheet for the guy who is filling in for me at work (which he needs tomorrow, oops) I had most of it done but then my computer froze and Auto Document Recovery was not my friend.
I am also downloading that Faster, Higher, Stronger thingy you mentioned yesterday :)
It was good, but took itself far too seriously. Am impressing Mr C with my facts today though :)
This morning I was tidying, & gardening, but I'm now watching NCIS s7 e14 :)
I was cleaning out my hard drive the other day and I found a video I filmed of me back then getting 110wpm but I deleted it so I cannot share it. I need to transcribe more Joe to get my skills back heh.
I almost had two of them downloaded but they were also victims of the computer freeze, when I restarted it they tried to auto resume and then threw a spaz because I'm not in the UK.
Scottish Open followed by the Challenge Cup, what a day.
Afternoon all.
Sounds like you've earned a sit down!
ooh and if you really want to be totes knowledgable this book is faaaantastic
www.amazon.co.uk/…357627&sr=8-3
Ohh yes, and I've timed the sit down to conveniently coincide with a certain Hangout.
I'm listening to An Aside with Joe and looking at the ironing that needs doing. Also, looking out of the window as it's St Swithun's day when the weather today will be the same for the next 40 days (apparently). So far this means a bit of sun and then grey cloud
We've had much worse of late, so I'll take 40 days of that!
more joe you say? we have more joe: sidepodcast.com/p…yone-comes-to-you
hey ya all.
Deal.
Good afternoon. I am mostly trying to wake up.
Indeed, I went to a bbq yesterday and spent most of it standing under gazebos trying not to sink into a waterlogged lawn.
Bought!
yay! its a really good book because it teaches you stuff but is actually really interesting at the same time. it got me thinking about buying tickets to events that I had absolutely no interest in before I read it. Might have to give myself a refresher on the flight over because its been a while since I finished it :)
A bit of bad news for circuit lovers I'm afraid. It appears the doors may soon be about to close at Portimao.
:(
Hi everyone! 73 WPM for me. Not bad, not bad at all. First time I did that test too, methinks. I don't recall it before.
Oh no! Why is that? It's a wonderful circuit, as I recall.
73 is good, good, good!
As with a lot of ventures in Portugal, they're broke.
i tired the typing test, but there were too many words. like i have time for that!
Quote: "Have I really got to type all this??"
Hehehehe.
44wpm. *dissappears from existance*
Helloooo
True. Very happy with it. But you and Amy... are just on another planet. They should have a sport for that - speed typing! Just like speed stacking. :)
Oh, that's just sad. Never even got to see F1 race on it.
Your speed was: 110wpm.
You made 1 mistake, your mistake is shown in bold text:
I knew it was that damn semi-colon that ruined my attempt earlier in the week! Even with the typical asdf jkl; hand position for some reason I can never find it.
ooh, ooh Christine! (everyone else stop reading now)
I don't know if you follow him on twitter but Kevin from the BSB has been posting pictures of them in the studio every day. It warms my heart to have all five of them back together <3
https://twitter.com/kevinrichardson
OMG! I follow them as a group, but the tweets are mostly annoying. I am following right now.
sounds like a pub challenge...
Following Kevin Richardson, you might also want to follow Sauber F1. Twitter trying to keep me on topic.
he is the only one whose tweets don't suck! mostly because they're allll photos.
Morning all! Well, it is here anyway. :)
Very nice shot from Donington today
http://t.co/7nmkdxJi
34 wpm, i'm faster than i remember
Hello! just tried the typing test - 63wpm. Better than i thought. I'm so rubbish at typing things up that aren't from my own head.
Hope everyone is well!
Oh. Have I stumbled into the typing pool / BSB appreciation society? I thought this was Sidepodcast!
I thought I was getting pretty good at touch typing, but that test tells me otherwise. 45wpm. :(
Rubbish? I got 44wpm. Keyboards, and indeed words, confuse me. I'm much better at random sounds.
I suppose it must take a tiny bit longer, because it's read-process-type, rather than thought-process-type.
my one mistake was misreading 'hours' as 'horses' haha
this is sidepodcast of old :)
If you know the abbreviation, you are part of the group :)
It took me a few seconds to work out, but I was so depressed at my typing speed I didn't want to type out the whole thing!
Hehehe!
I am going to have to keep my eyes peeled at all times in London because I am not familiar with being in the same cities as the bands I love.
Hahahahaha! 100% agreed there. :)
I had 'L onion' instead of London... thank you autocorrect..!
My problem exactly - if I am typing my thoughts I can go faster (depending on how fast my brain is working). My score is 59 - I was saving it to see whether it was good / bad / worth brushing under the mat.
this afternoon, i am mostly looking into new fonts to purchase. currently tempted by Tablet Gothic:
www.myfonts.com/f…er/tablet-gothic/
It is a grotesque sans serif that looks to the future of publishing with a clear understanding of its history, and reminiscences that go back to nineteenth century Britain and Germany.
retina display's will be the ruining of me.
in my first year of high school my typing teacher used to spend hours in class giving us sheets of lyrics to songs and making us type along while she played them on the stereo. Looking back I think that was a good way to learn how to be quick!
I think that's true for everyone. Personally, my technique is to try to memorize the next phrase I'm typing so I can focus on making sure I'm hitting the right keys. It works as long as there's no tough words - in which case I look at the word as I type and hope I'm hitting the right keys. :)
Did you get the Retina MBP? (another time saving acronym!)
Describing something as grotesque doesn't seem like a good selling point, even if it is a font.
I love the concept of a typing teacher!
Isn't it all going to be Comic Sans from now on after the CREN announcement?
All we ever got in IT lessons was how to use Excel.
not yet. just the ipad3 at the moment, but retina being as good as printed text means revisiting fonts previously discarded as being useless for screen, because retina isn't really a screen at all.
hehe i blame Christine and Amy for being too good!
It's an unfortunate word alright. Technically, the meaning of "grotesque" has gotten somewhat skewered over the years to the point where it doesn't quite mean what it actually means anymore.
Of course you'd choose to describe a font like that.
old word for sans-serif :)
officially the class was called TIM - Text and Information Management. But it was really just typing haha and I only took it because I had a gap in my class schedule that I didn't want to fill with Chemistry. Learning to do it properly back then I think has set me up well for life, although I still rest my wrists on the desk so if she was here she'd hit me on the back of a hand with a ruler.
I remember borrowing my sister's touch typing book when she was doing a secretarial course and trying it on an electric typewriter. I was doing A levels for Engineering at the time, so although I wasn't very good, I didn't think it mattered. When would I need to type, let alone touch type?
How wrong was I..?!?
Mmmm, evolving language.
Yep, completely.
Totally cromulent
"totes"
Never thought that I'd be doing this today ;)
When I had piano lessons, they used to put a coin on the back of my hands to make sure they were straight.
ooh thats evil!
me too, we just had an angry short italian ex army man who taught us IT. The only music he ever played was Italian.
Italian classical music, or jazz, or pop?
We never had typing teachers! We had 'computer studies' on 486's and get suspended for IM'ing the entire school network or playing Doom...
anything and everything, as long as it was Italian. Amazing thing was, in our last week of term we found out he couldn't even speak Italian himself!!
Not sure if anyone saw the fallout from the NASCAR Nationwide race last night. A slow driver who was 33 laps down in a 200 lap race (pretty much on pace) baulked the race leader Kevin Harvick on the penultimate lap, allowing Brad Kaselowski through.
Harvick wasn't awfully kind in the post-race interviews...
the first song we ever had to type was Metallica!
I'm really good at typing with the arrow keys & spacebar
Glorious graphics on that game.
That's the problem with NASCAR... 200 laps and it all goes wrong on lap 199..!!
Or A, S, W & D?
hi
typing is not my strong point, started typing this half an hour ago.....
speed sporting, just run the last lap. it could be the 100m version of nascar :)
♥
It was Elite on BBC Micros in my day...
Happens in motorsport, but this was one of those things that should have been avoided. Cope (the blocker) was a clear 30-40 mph slower in the corners. Jaw dropping really.
There wouldn't be enough time to drink Bud though.
We had posters on the walls for them! I used to go home & enjoy my Amiga 500 a LOT more
Don't they have flaggers? Will he be penalized?
nice, thats the spirit
I have entered James Allen's Paddock Club competition and if I don't win it I vote we add this to the reasons why he sucks.
No one seemed worried about flagging her down. No penalties, especially as it's gotten them an extra bit of TV coverage.
Does Bernie know he's setting up a rival Paddock Club?
Nothing Else Matters is rather slow, and has big gaps between the lyrics for you to catch up :)
Nice to bias is alive and well. ;)
I'm Amy from the Internet, it's only right that I should get such a prize.
I think at the time I had a Spectrum. I got an Amiga by the end of my degree though
Right folks, cheers for the chat. Time for to head outside for some fresh air and Sunday dinner. :)
See you later.
You've won plenty already, share the love around a bit.
I will share with other Sidepodcasters :D
I started at C64, a couple of friends had Amstrads, I don't think i've ever used a Spectrum
Thanks!
Benevolent Amy from the internet :)
I am trying to behave and concentrate on something important and Christine goes and opens a hangout. Have you no consideration? I should be able to quickly browse the internet and find nothing of interest so I can concentrate on what I am meant to be doing.
It has never happened yet but maybe one day
A tree just fell down in my garden! No reason, it's not windy. Very odd...
I'm not sure I want to watch the athletics anymore. I just realised the 5000 metres is the same as a 5k and they are doing it in 15 minutes. I did a 5k today. Took me... longer.
Sailboat Sea Vixen to Sidepodcast Command, come in over....
Good luck! Too bad it's a random draw, though - no way we can help you...
*waves* ;)
the good old c64, they were gold back in the mid 80s
HAHAHA! :D
Today was the 1 year anniversary of my 5k and it makes me sad that I have barely run since :( getting that medal was the worst thing that happened to my running!
Distraction is my mission in life.
hehe!! :)
Looks like I'll have to break out the chainsaw...
It's only 9:45 and already about 85F here. Too hot to be chopping trees!
They are getting energy from all the people watching. If you had that many people watching you would run faster too
Honest
amy is the only person i know who ever enters anything :)
heheh just in case theres people in the hangout don't know me well I should point out that I'm not being serious and even if I don't win, I will have a fantabulous time in Germany :)
I've been entering the Go Pro 'Win Everything We Make' sweepstakes, but I haven't won yet.
You are succeeding well at that. Transfer those techniques to your running
Better go and deal with the tree. Bye all
corrected for you.
Good luck!
OMG that is next week. How did it get from being next year to next week already?
I am still quite sure Korea used up allll my luck. I'm still not over that, I sometimes just randomly start thinking about it and have to pinch myself to convince myself that it actually happened.
Perhaps I need to nag you more.
I leave the country in 71 hours!
hehehe. i remember this tho - sidepodcast.com/p…g-isnt-everything
ehehe!! that was a rather incredible prize!!! It seems like only yesterday too!
The real question is how can you have missed out on all the counting down!?
I think so. When I get back from England I fully intend on starting up the couch to 5k and sticking to it because the weather will be much more running-friendly than it is now.
I think my problem over the last year was I have been having 1-2 months between runs and trying to pick up from where I left off each time I go out and its been too hard so I quit. I need to go back to the beginning again!
Jordan F1 onboard sailboat Sea Vixen, please be advised to steer Rockwell on a 10 degree toport course correction as I wish to avoid a collision....
Yes, I picked up my marine navigation cert aon an on-line test..... barely passed.... :p
oh gosh i'd forgotten about that!
I'm sad Jenson doesn't do that anymore.
It makes me laugh trying to picture how much of an awful time any of the other entrants would have had. That would have been the worst holiday everrrrr if you weren't an F1 fan.
Go back to the beginning, and have some kind of accountability, like starting up your blog again, or tweeting or some such. That's my advice.
Plus, I'll nag.
never forget your first cog.
:D hehe!
:D :D I keep my signed hat in pride of place in my room.. not sure where the cog is tho :( #sorrymrc
Uh oh...
When do you get back Amy? I'm popping down to Melbourne in late August, just organised it yesterday
#cograge
it's in my room somewhere....
when i find it i'll put it in pride of place with the hat :)
mmm blog. I would like to request everyone nag me to blog during the Olympics because a trip like this for me really needs to be recorded.
Ohh, that is so a job I can handle. Have you blogged about your preparations so far and what tickets you have? I need to have a rundown preview type thing.
I get back early morning on the 11th and should be ready to face the world again by the 13th.
I do have a draft about that thats been sitting there since April #oops.
Maybe I can finish it while I'm trying to kill time at the airport.
yes! we totally need to know which events she is at and which days, so we can be on Amy watch :)
Groovy
Or now. Do it, do it, do it.
sadly my job has to come first and I must write up instructions for trainee-man in the next 9 hours!
Reading back through the comments it looks like Amy has the opposite of my semi-colon problem. She can never find it and I keep tripping over it.
Tip for Amy. If you want a semi-colon aim for the apostrophe. Works all the time for me. Now I need a tip to find the apostrophe
Okay. I will remind you tomorrow :)
clearly not or steven would know it's less than a year to go. #amysfault
I should be writing a blog about our favourite inepot driver, Paster, but I am listening you your guys out in Sidepodastland while heading to a shipwreck in Lake Eire....
OK! Tomorrow night all I have to do is pack so if I ever get around to dealing with my washing I will get that done quick smart, and then I will have free time to blog. Tuesday night is last night in town dinner with Pamela :)
Very true
Apostrophe is always to the left of Enter. :)
to the left of my enter is ' which I always hit when aiming for ;
Don't crash because of us
Afternoon all, better late than never :)
On my key board # is left of enter the apostrophe is left of that and then semi-colon is next
.
Crash??!?!?! I am on a boat! My gal has banned me fromcomplaining about the lack of a driniking fountain on board just in case I get my wish and a leak sprouts up.... :p
Isn't # the one you get when you press Shift-3?
Hello Mr Lukeh.
not on crazy british keyboards
Are you using an American keyboard? Or a different layout in some way?
I would have turned up on time but I got bored watching the moto gp and went for a spontaneous drive on what is a surprisingly nice day for July these days. All driven out now though,
Using an American keyboard.
A tiny bit? Takes me an awful lot longer because I need to be looking at 3 different places at the same time. Need to look at the text and what I have typed and the keys. If it is in my head I can just look at the keys. Much, much easier and faster.
Typing from text is like driving and reading a book at the same time.
Showing off your new car :)
You said you were heading to a shipwreck
I really struggled with a UK keyboard the first time I used one. I guess I assumed since NZ uses British English more than American our keyboards would be the same, but the need to fit in the different currency symbols ruins EVERYTHING.
Shift-3 is £
he felt left out clearly :)
I'm not sure what online tests i've done... I think I did one before were it said my iq was something stupid like 146 when it's clearly not. Pinch of salt was very much taken
That is quite a lot.
iOS keyboards have spoiled typing for me, thank the lord for OS X and its auto-correct :D
New Car? Elaborate!
Oh, and Shift-4 is the Euro symbol?
Nope $
Alt-Gr 4 is €.
So I've learnt something today. Hadn't really thought about different countries having different keyboards. This may help www.uk-yankee.com…euroother-symbols
I got a new car a month ago and it's lucky for me that it turns out to be the best car ever* :)
*disclaimer: it may not be the best car ever. or it may be. who knows?
New cars are great, what you get?
If it's the best car to you, it doesn't matter what others think. :)
And speaking on this subject, I've just chosen our wedding car. Any guesses what it will be? ;)
its a little ford fiesta and i loves it.
Marty, you are not thinking third-dimensionally! The boat I am on will hopeflly be skewed by the depth of water between this floating boat and the shipwreck 60 feet beneath us....
driven by Schumacher? :D
mercedes?
I worked for a French company and their keypboards are weird. Apart from all the option keys with accented letters the top line is AZERTY instead of QWERTY
toata.co.uk/2012/…-moan-about-fuel/
Come on, Lukeh, prime plugging opportunity!
Must up my game!
Say hi to Pamela for me! :)
Bentley!
will do :)
Yes! It's the standard wedding carmaker of choice in the Philippines. Went for an 80s-spec 260e. :)
How I wish, but no. Would be cool, though.
I saw a Bentley in the choices, but it was crazy-expensive for a rental.
I'm sure Ralf might be interested but.. ;)
have you had much else to organise in the wedding? cars are the only responsibility my brother has for his haha
i didn't know you could choose a car. i think any wedding i've been too, they just drove their own car home.
No-one wants this at their wedding- www.youtube.com/w…tch?v=evwB22JqRsU
Nice, congrats
Zippy wee cars are fun
HAHAHA! Well, it would make for a good touring car... :D
My fiancee is the project manager. I do the legwork. Hahaha! I do get a say on key decisions, though (like headcount and buffet choices).
mmm, buffet
Definitely no cars required at ours.
i walked!
boooooooooo
The best was to confuse Ralf is to do something totally unexpected like braking for a corner.
Not many cars go on or under water, Mr. C.....
rubens wa sjust showing him how to drive, cant blame the guy
HAHAHA! Definitely not. :)
I'm very excited for our buffet. The prawns are crazy-delicious. :) I'm pretty sure I'll end up not eating much in the dinner itself, though.
Mr. C got married underwater??
I'm offended you don't like my Felipe ;)
felipe is awesome!
he is the 2nd best car ever.
;)
Must be a culture thing. Here, the groom and bride need to have a white wedding car. It takes the bride to the church, then the couple to the reception.
now i feel we missed a trick.
Although if you had this car at your wedding mr C, Christine would technically have been able to strike "going on a submarine" off her bucket list.....
http://phys.org/news117377410.html
new one on me. i demand pictures though :)
every wedding I've seen/been to has wedding cars but they don't necessarily need to be white, they just shove some ribbon on the front so everyone knows they're for a wedding.
You can do that, but, seeing as you can't even be bothered to finish a typing test, I didn't think you'd be interested in getting certified as a diver beforehand!
There will be HUNDREDS of them on my Facebook page when it's all said and done. :) But do you even have a personal account there?
Similar down this way, not always white though. If i'm ever involved in such an event, it'll be Silver Jaaaggggs :D
nope. but christine does and that's just as good :)
Who really knows? :P
We didn't bother doing anything - my new father-inlaw drove us the 5 mins to the reception ;) (in his Picasso)
I always said I'd have MGs so I can just rope my dads friends into driving them.
And we're already friends, so yup, that should work fine. :D
It's not far away now - it's scheduled during the F1 summer break. :)
oooh exciting!
awesome scheduling :) :)
My cousin had a stretch Hummer as their wedding car. That's... an acquired taste.
Why does a 20-race calendar have an entire month off?
I'd drive them as much as i could :D
Very tasteful
Oh my.
factories shut down.
to enjoy the wea-oh.
now i feel we missed a trick.
You can do that, but, seeing as you can't even be bothered to finish a typing test, I didn't think you'd be interested in getting certified as a diver beforehand!
Am I reading this right in that Christine is giving mr. C permission to get married again? Marriage on the rocks or a second wife for mr. C? female F1 pit lane reporters, lookout!
They're EVERYWHERE here.... in pink more often than not, reeking of 'Class'
oh boy do they get a glaring when i drive past them!
And that's not the best part. It's scheduled on our anniversary as a couple. And we just found out yesterday that it will be 64 years to the day when our grandparents got married! Very, very happy with our choice of date. :)
so people can schedule weddings and holidays :)
It was, at least, black.
Pink Hummers? The mind boggles
I know teens in the US use it for their proms or their debuts there.
How cool is that?
I bet it's linked to a Schumacher day somewhere. The day the Schumacher family chose Michael over Ralf perhaps
It's usually just 3 weeks. But they get the extra week this year due to the Olympics.
The stomach convulses...
They know amy's got travelling to do
my problem would be, which model? All the ones I associate with happy memories only fit two people haha.
:D
Apparently, for someagencies, it is all done on-line, including the tests*... :p
* not quite all, but enough for comedic effect....
is it 4 weeks then? was confused when joe said it was just 3.
HAHAHAHAHA! That's just hilarious. :D
amazing!!
Only need 2 seats :D
thats awesome! I always said I'd like to share an anniversary with my grandparents because they were awesome and I'd love a marriage like theirs.
Maybe that's the factory shutdown period. But there'll be a 5-week gap in between races.
yeah, the bridesmaids and my dad can walk, i'll meet them there.
cool. i think he might be early for spa :)
Have a grid of them, and race between venues!!
Should we tell him?
Did you have to give Christine a piggy-back on the way to the reception?
(I'm back! The tree has been dragged into the woods to let nature reclaim it)
its weird they're having extra for the Olympics considering theres a race while the Olympics are on then they have five weeks off after they're over.
By the way, how come the time was not posted for this Hangout?
My thoughts exactly. :)
damn, i should've!
top right of the page chap.
I wouldn't have minded, they were the most evil shoes in the history of the planet.
just as long as he kept his balance, I'm sure you'd hate to be dropped overboard.
didn't you throw them away that afternoon?
As soon as I took them off, they went straight in the bin.
What's a wedding for if not an excuse to buy some ridiculous shoes?
oooh fashon :)
Not ridiculous. EVIL.
Are you sure it was the shoes and not just that you were walking on water
it was a big boat :) :)
hehe
I really have no idea how women put up with heels. Just looking at them puts me off balance. That one woman we saw at goodwood with them on, her centre of gravity must've been astounding
Love the Swedish one with 3 extra letters.
Hi everybody.
In that situ.... I am confused as to which one of them would have been called "All wet". English is such a crazy language.... :p
Where do they put them? One extra per row?
The keybiard talk has got me wondering if there's a welsh keyboard... our alphabet has several letters missing and also has the likes ff, dd and ll in there too
My fiancee is practical. She's wearing flats on the day of our wedding. :)
for dramatic effect i was hoping that sentence would end in 'the sea' rather than the bin :)
now that is a missed opportunity!
Is there anything Swedish you don't like?
I so should have done that, if only I'd thought!
Yeah, you should have tied a note to them and flung them overboard like a message in a bottle.:)
I got talking to a guy at work on Friday who didn't realise that Welsh was a language and he thought I was kidding when I said it was. I had to source a video on youtube to prove it to him!
The message could have said "Don't bother trying to wear these shoes"
haha, yeah, even the welsh assembly are doing stuff to try and make people realise it exists and to learn it. which i shall hopefully be doing soon!
pat incidentally, is this week visiting one of the places our cruise stopped off at. wrong hangout thread for small world coincidences though.
:D save it for that next pair of evil shoes. i bought some shoes the other day that looked BEAUTIFUL but were the most pain my feet have ever been in. Currently plotting ways to dispose of them. :)
What is the world coming to when YouTube is the authority on whether Welsh is a language! :)
ooh that'll be awesome if you do!
Didn't you try them before you bought them?
mum is having a go at me for not cleaning the study. I blamed Christine and she honestly just said 'you can't blame Christine from the Internet for this!'
:D
hehehehe
you can always blame christine on the internet.
i do.
:)
#blamepastor#blamechristine?Can we have this on a t-shirt?
2nd
for dramatic effect i was hoping that sentence would end in 'the sea' rather than the bin :)
now that is a missed opportunity!
Makes sence. Christine took the plunge..... :p
:)
Yes! With the hashtag!
bruno gets an award - http://twitpic.com/a7xmy2
my hugs are clearly no longer enough *sob*
Love the Swedish one with 3 extra letters.
Is there anything Swedish you don't like?
Ikea?
that is the most confusing award ever. I'm sure they choose the winner by pulling a name out of a hat.
well when they asked me to pick a winner they wouldn't let me choose rubens
"You can't blame Christine from the Internet for this!" But you can #BlamePastor!
Site suggestion: Make links open in a new tab / window by default. (Is that something you can set from your end?)
Clicking a link and having to come back always screws up the live streams for me on Safari.
middle-click.
No there are 2 on the right of the second row and one on the top row on the right. Basically I treated the right of the keyboard as the danger zone. www.worldofspectr…nternational.html
Hold CTRL while clicking links - does that job for you :)
Not so far. :) Well, pickled herring wasn't great. And I don't like crawfish.
I'm excited that the final installment of the cornetto trilogy from nick frost, simon pegg and edgar wright has finally been green lighted :D
blogs.indiewire.c…0713#.UABxA_kiiSo
Middle-who? I'm on a laptop with no buttons..! :)
I know I can "right click" to say open in new tab, but I always forget. I wondered if it was something the site can force the default on. I'm sure some sites seem to open new tabs rather than change the page in the current tab.
Just me trying to be lazy...
it must have some buttons? we used to open links in a new tab, but that was annoying to some people, so we reverted. this way you have a choice (mostly).
So, has anyone ever taken any other tests on the interwebs? I've done a couple here and there, but don't know what to make of them.
I have a hard enough time between British and American!
I didn't realise she was the official Williams tweeter. I follow her but I had no idea
as long as comouters don;t start offering blood tests I'm cool with them.
*shudders*
*computers
claire's too important to tweet now.
I only have two buttons but I always, always, always open links in a new tab regardless of the site so not having a middle button has never been an issue
I knew Claire had been replaced.
Oh crap! I just realized that my shipmates include, the skipper, (the owneres) a millionare and his wife (and my gal) a brunette farm girl.... on what has been so far a three hour cruise.....
Someone send out the search party now....
question comes up frequently, we'll have to figure something out :)
of course, but they i'm sure any girl will tell you some shoes are fine in the shop but awful when you actually wear them for longer than 10mins.
Can't please all of the people etc...
Use your contacts to restyle all mice and laptop pads to have a third button by default?
#rankings
http://pic.twitter.com/cBwvJjR3
That would suggest you need to walk about the shop for more than 10 minutes making considering noises
I'm very slow with my typing, so I'm used to looking at the keyboard. It helps on different keyboards.
By the way, it's so nice to have someone commenting here who's also in the EST. :)
i get right on that then :)
:D
the shoes I bought on Friday I wore for 20 seconds and I only wore one of them. I figured how uncomfortable can comfortable tennis shoes be?
Right, I'm off. Other stuff to do.
Will take An Aside With Joe with me though.
laters chap
Same here. Was fun hanging out! :)
ditto!
Enjoy yourselfs.
See you later
I would suggest that too but my lass is right beside me stateing that we are just about to enter a squall. She also stated that she rather be comapred to "Ginger than Marianne - Gilliagan".....
Must have seen the above note....
speaking of shoes, I saw some pap shots of Andy Murray the other day and he had his shoelaces undone. No wonder he can't win a slam.
Bye to those.
now it all makes sense
I also had to stop watching the athletics because everyone seems to be running in odd-coloured shoes these days.
aww bless him!
yes! Nike sell them like that on purpose. What is wrong with them!
Copying Alex Wurz
I think adidas might actually do that on purpose!?
Mum just walked in with a massive office white board for the study! Is it odd that i'm excited that i get to plan my dissertation on it? :)
All kinds of wrong.
White boards are fantastically exciting!
My brother started that fashion a long time ago. He even played football with the laces tucked into the top of his socks rather than tie them
I'm very slow with my typing, so I'm used to looking at the keyboard. It helps on different keyboards.
By the way, it's so nice to have someone commenting here who's also in the EST. :)
Lake Eire's all in the EST, Kai......
hehe there are multicoloured pens and everything!
These are the shoes I bought www.adidas.com.au…1RD1zaG9lcw%3D%3D
But I am not on board with this 'tying the laces inside the shoes' thing so I have mine tied up like normal with the knots on the outside.
Oooh i got to use one on thursday. It was jolly good fun.
Remember those laces that boinged back into springs rather than need to be tied.
his aren't even tucked in though, they're hanging out where he could trip over them!
i.dailymail.co.uk…C-115_634x724.jpg
it hurts just to look.
Welcome to my world. :) I use blue the most.
That's because he is not playing football. At all other times they are like that
Talk about no need for doing up: http://memoryglands.com/spring-shoelaces
Sorry for my distraction today, I'm starting to organize and pack for a road trip to Chicago this Friday.
maybe I'm just trip prone because I couldn't do it, I'd faceplant straight away.
The poor owner's wife face is starting to Look "Honda Earth green"..... darned squall. This hammock I am lying on is awesome....
?!?
hehe it does remind me of being at school before they replaced them with electronic ones.
Have you caught this planning thing from Amy? You should be able to sue for all the time it takes up
maybe she stole my planning. I have now passed the 12 hour mark of thinking about my washing and not doing it.
I have never seen those before
We're just starting to get the 'smart' whiteboards now. We're mostly analog "I'll use blue and green today".
that makes me feel old.
the problem with smartboards is that they don't come with pieces of chalk, it's just wrong :)
No, always been this way. It settles me and I have time to gather all the stuff I need in a relaxed way. #luxury
It shouldn't. We still had whiteboards when I was at school.
Has to be said that they do do some really useful things!
*throws the planning back to you* :)
You are heading to the windy city? Cool
Here's what you need: "a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes", and "sunglasses".:p
i certainly didn't have electronic ones! I do remember the classrooms slowly being upgraded from blackboards to whiteboards though :)
We have strategies to remove those marks from kids who want to try out a Sharpie on it.
the day when we came in after the summer holidays and had these machines on the ceiling was an exciting day to be a year 6 pupil.
what is this majestic device?! we declared. or something like that.
...then it broke a week later.
I started teaching with actual chalk and black or green boards. #superold #let'ssayI'm27
Oh good, we're only 10 years behind. Good news. Thanks, budget makers.
you're not much older than me!
Apparently stuff like this happens randomly in Sweden. What's not to love?
desmond.yfrog.com…640&ysize=640
in the very near future, it'll be tablet devices wifi'd to hd tv screens. teacher can then wander around and update the screen from anywhere. super cheap to install too.
but you can watch films on the smart boards, it's like being at the cinema! ;)
:D
'ello ello... how long does a hangout last? I was worried I'd missed it again!
last orders at 5pm good sir.
Oooh excellent!
I am in the garden
And I have a beer
We can't even have air conditioning when it gets to be 83F/23C in classroom. Anyway, other topics that don't involve me complaining.... :)
Alex Andronov15/07/2012 at 16:04:37
'ello ello... how long does a hangout last? I was worried I'd missed it again!
About as long as a Giggles Radio used too! Now whatever happened to them?
I must have just gone to a crummy school. I wonder if they've gotten electronic whiteboards in the 9 years since I left :D
Even at night were the sunglasses ;)
Nina happened. :)
Compared to a blackboard/whiteboard?
Oh, I just remembered that the next two episodes of Twenty Twelve were recorded last night! Yes!
the school i did my dissertation with already had stuff like that just before ipads came out. I imagine they're doing it now, although this is for special education needs I must say
yay! I was watching that earlier this evening as part of my procrastination.
I got 67 on the typing test
Here's what you need: "a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes", and "sunglasses".:p
Even at night were the sunglasses ;)
What you do not need is to hear the "Peter Gunn Theme" in the Background, that "Princess Leia" chick is psycho.... :P
Already possible with tablets and IWBs
All blackboards for me too... no electronic witchcraft!
It's so funny. Best show I've found recently. So much better than most crap on tv now. But Breaking Bad is back tonight for it's last season. That's good.
Heh :)
I actually blame work rather than Nina but there you go. Work taking up more time than normal has meant while I might have time on a weekend to do a show, I haven't had time to prepare a show.
What schools can afford this? It's only special magnet schools here that focus on technology.
Brother-in-law does that with ipad & Apple tv already
I've given up on new TV. I'm watching Buffy and Batman: The Animated Series. Though not at the same time.
it took my school two years to put them in every classroom (but it was stupidly expensive to go to and they loved their gadgets)
clearly the best pub ever!
That typing test was on Lou's dad's birthday
Very good wifi!
compared to a smartboard. which are insanely pricey and are the definition of vendor lock-in.
Certain teachers use their own iPads to do it :)
:)
if i hadn't have just read the daily post and comments you're referring to, i'd be creeped out :)
it's very cool. if every student has a tablet, a teacher can draw on everyone's screen in a class.
Don't have one of those either. I need that lottery win, bigtime!
Well i was searching that day's post for my name to see if I've got faster or slower since then. And it looks like I didn't take the test, but I did wish your dad happy birthday
Hmmmm, Adrienne Barbeau as catwoman. I have a desireto watch the Cannonball Run* now....
*Sidepodcastfilmclub possibility?
The school I did my work with were funded with money from the welsh assembly and council but they were a fully fledged special needs school rather than a mainstream school. Parents also funded towards it even though it wasnt a private school but more so for the benefit of their kids and their issues.,
:D
Priorities :)
agreed. but the cost savings come from off the shelf technology and free/cheap apps. IWB's are really, really bespoke and crazy expensive.
that's exactly the system, yup. airplay rocks for that kinda thing.
we are currently hanging a HUGE pin board now, I'm being taught how to put screws into the with properly with something called a rawplug. interesting way to spend sunday afternoon :)
if you're putting any curtains up, you need to stream it. #sidepodlaw
While we're talking about future devices / input devices. I'm guessing the answer has got to be the glasses route...
I imagine the glasses having a kind of Microsoft Kinect sensor in them which focuses on the hands.
So when I want to write something I can simply type on the desk in front of me, if I look down a keyboard would be projected there.
Somebody hands me a piece of paper, I can draw on it either for real or with a stylus or my finger if I use the stylus / finger route then the only person who can see my notes is me.
no curtains to put up. i'd stream this but sadly my internet isn't up to loading a webpage in less than 5 mins at the moment.. so i doubt streaming is a good idea.
Perfect, its his own gear though, and i had nothing to do with the decision :D
iPads work with Smartboards too i'm told
Squall stopped. Maybe we can pick up a little bit os speed now....
That's awesome. Schools here are public- funded by taxes from the town, or private - funded by tuition paid by each student's family. The community usually thinks the school budgets are too high, including our salaries. So, as public servants we just have to be happy with what we can get. I push for technology bc it's so useful in helping kids, so efficient. And that's why I recorded all of the text I use in class this past year, for any kids who have trouble decoding words visually. Their performance skyrocketed with the audio support from the iPods used in class. So happy for them.
ahhhh!! learn something new everyday. sounded like mum was saying raw.. but rawlplug sounds about right too :)
Fact
maybe it just hasn't been smelted properly into a screw yet and is still a little raw
is smelted the right word? it felt like the right word. i dont think it's the right word.
they're good, but not for people who already wear glasses. same as 3d tv.
i like the concept, but i don't like the idea of just a few limited designs (placement of the screen limits for example round lenses).
Rawlplugs are an awesome invention.
Hehe #sidepodlaw
smelled is the right word as in the smelt smelled fishy.... :p
I'm not sure they are smelted, I think they are cut?
I typed this on porpoise... *
Marine punnage time!
They are great, but don't do it in my house - I have to use a lot of plasterboard-fittings
all this talk of schools led me to my high schools website and I barely recognise any of the names on the staff page. I wonder where all my favourite teachers have gone and what they're up to now.
Smelted is a good word though, I like.
no NO NO
Everyone processes information differently so ideally it should be presented in different forms too. Well done you
you would love my dissertation. I wish I could share it, it pretty much runs off themes like that.
Careful with the puns Jordan... You don't want me to make you my anemone.
Rawlplugs must be moulded
I thought he was talking about the screws at that point?
:) :) :)
diy is confusing.
I sea where you are going with this
Most rawlplugs I've seen are plastic, so they would be moulded.
Must say, the walk was nice and so was Sunday dinner. :)
amazing, the world needs more understanding teachers like you :)
At times like this I clam up while my brains searches for a pun or 2.
I imagine moulding is the easiest way to make screws too.
the history of the rawlplug:
www.rawlplug.co.u…id=3&Itemid=3
I don't think so, I think they are made out of wire and then cut which seems wasteful, but I guess they turn the excess back into raw material?
Me too. Makes me crabby.
Ture, with you as my anemone, I would never whale you greetings again! :p
my mum is better at diy than dad, it's crazy! She is currently standing on our new desk trying to work out a way of getting the screw into a brick wall. If it was me i'd just hit it with a hammer..
Nearly a week ago by now, but did anyone here catch Jeroen Slaghekke's quite unique way of solving an electrical problem at the Oschersleben during the FR NEC race last week?
www.youtube.com/w…;feature=youtu.be
:o
But how would you make the head with the slot or the little Philips thing?
I'd use some no more nails stuff. But then, I'm not trusted to do anything, so...
If I have to fine you per pun, I think this could end up costing you a few squid
i'm pretty sure there is nothing mum's cannot do.
Also hitting it with a hammer sounds right to me :)
*blush*
Thanks for the kind words.
As I like to call it "percussive maintenance".
Let's just go with the flow and not get into a jam about it.
Might make you a tdey sum
tidey
ehehehe!!
she has gone with an electric screwdriver thing.
that said when we used a pneumatic drill, one of those black and decker things, a few years back trying to put my graduation picture up, I couldnt work out why the drill wasnt working and it turns out my stepdad pointed out to me i hadnt actuall put a screw thing into the drill bit thing.
not my strongest point is diy involving walls.
Will Buxton @willbuxton
Some jackass has thrown tacks onto the road in the Tour da France. Absolute disgrace. Quelle con.
This can't have actually happened, right?
Looks like I'm right: en.wikipedia.org/…Screw#Manufacture
Do not do that Alex! We do not want to have Steven borrow money from loan sharks, now do we>
It's will buxton, some dude probably dropped a pin in a street near him.
:)
For your amazing work, I'd like to award you a gold starfish
hehe!
I'm not shore that is a pun tbf.
0130 here folks, getting sleepy
Night All, nice to chat :D
Might make you a tidey sum
:)
For your amazing work, I'd like to award you a gold starfish
That was a fluke of a pun and you know!
A fluke pun is such a whale of a tail....
That seems like a very awkward way of doing things. I need to a screw manufacturing process to my list of things I need to invent.
bye Matt
See you Matt
:)
Byee
forgot the word "it".....
Bye Matt
Bye Matt
Bye Matt!
Bye Matt
james richardson @acjimbo
Stage 14 Tdf. We expected attacks, we got tacks. We expected punchoers. We got punctures. Turned out to a be a flat stage in the mountains
Eurosport is live with the TdF and they are saying there were tacks on the road.
james richardson presents their coverage, and does love a pun
I mean if you're trying to win the tour de france that's a rather underhand tack - tick
I find this attempt of a joke taxing on my patience....
Cadel Evans had to pin his hopes on something.
Doing a quick search several riders were burned by flares yesterday. Spectators running alongside the road with lit flares and either deliberately or accidentally letting them touch riders. Apparently several riders responded with well aimed water bottles
www.telegraph.co.…osing-stages.html
Good.
what on earth is wrong with people!
yeeesh, how ridiculous.
Like the guys who run out and then knock people off, or the guy a few years ago who's bag straps tripped Lance by catching his handlebars.
oh my goodness!!
Burning people with flares has to be the stupidest thing I have yet.......
More stupid than spinklers on F1 tracks?
Whoah, I've just found this really cool online test: www.vocabtest.com…ns.php?tid=121981
Burning people with flares has to be the stupidest thing I have yet.......
More stupid than spinklers on F1 tracks?
They where not running up to the F1 driver to burn him with sprinker... It is still stupid, but not so much....
Nicely timed late point of interest to guarantee a lock in. Well done

First word I got was importantalized. Can't help thinking that was in the sidepoddictionary
ahem
I may not have *found* the test
:D :D
ahhh good times
:D
Hehehe!
my first word was amazini.
Oh Lukeh, that was a GREAT night.
eheheh!
i really really wish i had kept those voicemails :)
On soundcloud
:D
I got 100%
I need to know who got importantalized wrong. Needs to do more sidepodstudying
maybe Pat and I should get him drunk at the football next week.
(next week! EEK!)
wasn't me!
Your VocabTest.com Test Results
You scored higher than 99% of all students on this test!
You answered 6 / 6 correctly on the first try.
yeah so everyone tells me. i wish i could remember to agree
you stand a good chance, Pat was there when he got drunk at the gig i think?
100% - thought it be different on Q2.
I would be very depressed if I hadn't got them all right, considering how many times I copy/pasted that dictionary from wiki to wiki :)
we might need booze to make womens football interesting #sorryladies
hehe!! wasn't me
'You scored higher than 99% of all students on this test!
You answered 6 / 6 correctly on the first try.'
:)
Me too. Hard to believe 99% didn't get 100%
I navigated away when that was my word so it might have been me, which is especially bad as I coined the word :)
It was me. Today has been a massive embarrassment.
You must be glad you never need to do that again
Glad, but sad the dictionary must now be complete.
I must give the ten minute warning, as Mr C has disappeared.
I got 6/6 too!
yay! in 10 minutes I might get some work done!
Good thing tomorrow is my last day of training, ie, hes going to do all the work while I "supervise" aka drink a lot of coffee.
Shame we could never find a sensible wiki
that sounds like a nice day :)
Lewis loves his doughnuts: http://t.co/FvtDX1f4

I'm not sure how much he actually learnt on his 'watching and taking notes' days but hopefully he's got it down :)
Hmmm, donuts....would love some timmie's right now....

See you soon hangout fans :)
I must give the ten minute warning, as Mr C has disappeared.
Man Overboard! :P
Lewis has more donut points than weightwatchers
ba dum tisch
see you next time! Maybe! depending on the time of the hangout and my access to wifi!
If not, see some of you next Thursday. It's Monday here so I can say the meetup is next week. Yay!
So long as his extra points isn't a big 0 ...
Oooh was just thinking... Will there be a thread for the Sidepodcast meetup? Or will we all have to talk in like real life?
(by the way I am now confirmed as ATTENDING)
I believe you mean instantrimshot.co…ic/?sound=rimshot
yaaaaaay!
woohoo!
Precisely.
#rankings reminder sent
Coalhole manager Annie commented recently and said they have wifi. It would be rude not to use it
eegads, hope not.
Have a great time and I'll be wanting to know all that goes on. Sorry I can't be there.
We might be able to sort something out.
see you all soon! thanks for a fun few hours :)
Great to be with you all. TTFN
Byee all.
Thanks all (and probably hugs on Mr C's behalf as well), great commenting, talk soon!
What a well behaved crowd. They get all their goodbyes in and leave without being thrown out. Bet they are not like that in 'outside' pubs
