If you could be number one in the world at anything, what would it be?
Published by Christine Blachford
This week, I've stolen a line from the children's TV show Blue Peter. They occasionally do live questions and take responses from the viewers, just to prove they are live, I think. A couple of week's ago, the question was this: If you could be number one in the world at anything, what would it be? It can be sports, but doesn't have to be. I think I would like to be number one in the world at baking bread. I'm not very good at it, but I'd like to be better. And maybe eating it too. How about you?

hellooooooo
Mr C is unlocking all the doors, no doubt. Come on in.
hello fellow hangers!
*sits at the bar*
i'm just changing the barrels.
I would like to be number one at eating everything in sight and never gaining a pound #hungry
Hey guys! Can you do me a favour?
if i could be number one at anything, it would have to be number one rubens fan.
Was going to give a cheesy answer but no, number 1 rubens fan would be awesome :)
Surely you are that already!
i havent met him yet! it's not good enough.
must.do.better.
I would have thought Rubens would love Goodwood and you would have met him there
I have. You can have mine.
Helloo, SidepodPeople. I don't know what I'd like to be number one at, there are so many things to choose from...
Bartender! Screwdriver! and hold the Orange Juice.......
Depends what it is!
and mine!
i'm not sure if he's ever been amazingly. Not in the years I have anyways, it's a shame. He seems to rarely be in the UK for fan type of stuff after the Honda years
Being in Indycar will not help that, either.
the closest I have come is when kathi and emma got his autograph for me at spa. I still have it on my shelf :)
i forgot they did that!
Good afternoon there. I dunno what I'm drinking today, but I do know that whenever I go to the bar, it will be a different one! Surprise me.
Gonna get my plug in early, it must be Franck o'clock: mrschristine.com/…e-that-sometimes/
Do plug if you have anything to share.
is it possible to be number one at being number one?
Kai put a post up last night
imissthecomments.…/20/travel-ideas/
Afternoon peeps
i can plug something this week!
I used a kindle for the first time friday. It was glorious. toata.co.uk/2012/…s-a-kindle-magic/
Either best Captain of a (ice) hockey team, pticher of a baseball team or the guy actually running the world then.....
northernwaffler.wordpress.com for all sorts of Eurovision fun! And the fourth part whenever I can be bothered to finish it.
Is it Eurovision time again? They must do four of those a year now
i am loving your eurovision posts :D
ive enjoyed reading your posts but i still refuse to listen to the songs until the saturday night
What about a pre-plug?
Going to the Monaco GP Badger Bash in London next week. Will do a post if it's a good'un
Technically it's three, but you know.
Thanks for the compliments.
Preplugging also encouraged :)
I have a poll at my website underpressureofso…rt.wordpress.com/ where I am trying to find the unluckiest ever Dutch F1 driver. s/He has to be Dutch to be used in a minor plot device for a script I planned to send your guys way in time for Indy.....
Also as I mentioned on twitter earlier, muse are going to be carrying the torchwood torch today at 5pm though teignmouth. i still find it incredibly odd!
I would like to plug mine and Pats visit to Cardiff and Lukeh and ask if anyone else wants to come along :D
olympic torch, i mean.
see, it's broken my head
When are you going to Cardiff?
The Torchwood torch sounds interesting!
July 25 for the womens Olympic football :D
barrowman!! *shakes fist*
Sounds like a fun reason to visit
Am i right to picture Tennant from Never Mind the Buzzcocks?
NZ v GB, things might get violent in the stands :D
spot on :D
oooh, are we doing pubbing in cardiff?
no :( but pubbing in london 24 hours later!
you should definitely join us!
I would say Sophie Kumpen because she was married to Jos Verstappen but she is Belgian
All twelve of you in the ground?
although the football starts at 4pm and if pubs open in the morning ;)
11,003 :P
how are you managing that?!
It's Wales and New Zealand, so they're probably all related.
monaco 2008 on sky sports f1.
mmmm lovely honda car.
You're going to the pub without your landlord? Shocking behaviour ;)
In like an 80,000 seater? That's less than what Wales get...
Nice and slow so you enjoy all its features.
exactly, we get to admire it's dumboflugels :)
back to london on a train after the match, wake up on thursday, watch some torch relay, drink some beer, eat some mini pies or other snack, perfect :D
amazing. not sure we could manage two meetups in two days.
there was 11,000 sold before the last round of ticket sales so i assume more sold then, but yes, it won't be anywhere near full which is why even though we don't have tickets yet I'm not worried about not getting any :D
Not sure how to break this gently, I'm not sure mini pies are still on the menu these days
blockquote>I would say Sophie Kumpen because she was married to Jos Verstappen but she is Belgian<
Being married to Sophie Kumpen could be used by Jos to lap the field in this race, Steven.... :p
We is old now.
thats good, they were gross anyway. #blasphemy
my blood has been replaced with HOLIDAY JOY. It does strange things to me.
you're like an olympic father christmas
Depends where these meetups are. Can't imagine travelling to London would be cheap during the Olympics.
best start you off with some goldschlager ;)
speaking of which, bassano, pat would like to know if he can borrow your couch :D
Can't see that being an issue
we thought it made more sense than him travelling from cardiff to patland then from patland to london the following day, plus i didnt fancy too much the idea of travelling by myself in the dark.
So Amy, anything going on in the world of tennis?
Christine was right, you do hate Umlauts :)
Goldschläger
the rome final starts in about 40 minutes! nadal v djokovic. then its time for RG! Who is not our Ryan or F1's Romain.
Hello Sidepodpeople!
I really don't know what I'd like to be number one at. Maybe I'd like to trade it for being very good at several things...
pricey no doubt, but we're only planning one meet-up this year and that'll be it.
*grips desk for dear life*
i like roland garros, although it needs blue clay just to annoy people.
Well, if the meetup is in Cardiff that wouldn't be so bad.
I think to think unlike Roland Garros, it's always time for both me and Grosjean.
doh, the admin that christine is having to do right now.
i am willing to bribe people to come to the meetup with the promise of foreign snack foods. any requests let me know ;)
Mostly I just want to give Lukeh some Australian Fanta and watch his head explode.
Purple clay, green clay, pink clay...
it's not supposed to be orange coloured!
cardiff instead? possibly, but if people are leaving the same evening i guess it would be a short one?
meetup will be in london, the day before the opening ceremony, so technically not "during" the olympics, just ;)
Moto GP commentators gave away a Go Pro camera. Bet Mr C likes them better now
I am not doing the comments.
What colour is Fanta in Wales?
Anyone you recommend?
yellow!
wha?? why?
the french open is my least favourite slam so if you watch it just assume nadal will win it all :)
To one of the Moto 2 riders to do a behind the scenes weeken thing
ooooooh.
mum wants me to meet my second cousin while I'm in Cardiff. Her name is Catherine so she must be pretty cool.
Because it is not blue?
Mr C was excited that he could have got his hands on one.
Have you considered the possibility that you're colour blind?
Lemon Fanta is yellow. Orange Fanta is Orange
nah, your orange fanta is yellow. crazy.
Best make sure you have a distinctive handbag that day
I will do.
No, it's Orange. Is this a conspiracy.
Oh, you weren't talking to me, were you? This is awkward.
honestly, it's yellow. Amy has seen the shock with her own eyes too :)
I am sure Amy won't mind you having a nic bag too. unless it is better than her's
:)
That's okay then.
no this is orange https://www.coles…e7/ff/4817985.jpg yours doesn't look like that. yours looks wrong.
You think it's orange, until you see the actual orange stuff: secondratesnacks.…mages/orange3.jpg
orange as the french one or proper fluo-orange?
I agree ;)
The Google pics do look a bit yellow. I never drink it so I just see the Orange cans
I'm going to pretend this never happened
And apologise for calling Lukeh colourblind, hopefully.
Me too. Nothing is that orange.
Orangina is so much nicer than Fanta. Plus, if you shake the bottle, you wake the drink!
yours likes to trick me into thinking its actually orange juice. ours says 'hey! i'm made of all sorts of chemicals! i'm bad for you!'
Yes, that too
Sorry Lukeh :)
I haven't had it for years, it's not the nicest of things. I just can't get over the fact it's orange in australia. That's like... like.. marmite being red!
oh marmite, how i miss you #marmageddon
no offence taken :)
*secretly continues to make up colours nevertheless*
Marmageddon must surely be about marmots!
Hehe, James Allen on the monaco 2008 coverage.
"Mike, tell me about Adrian Sutil, he's always threatened to do something special hasn't he?"
That would make for an excellent game!
I did not invent the name of this catastrophe, i am just suffering through it :D
Something special being crashing in the most peculiar ways.
I can see the tagline now...
"Today Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Tomorrow the World"
also I managed to get a photo of the dumbo flugels #retro
http://t.co/IHbp2Ehx
(also, bonus heikki)
Can marmots swim?
Yay!
You know there's Marmite Extra Strong too?
"Today Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Tomorrow the World"
Can marmots swim?
Does not matter. They found the "Port du Victoria" bridge!
I've never tried UK Marmite, I will have to give it a go while I'm visiting :)
The Metro goes there, they can hop on that
Is it not the same stuff?
Is that used in Guantanamo?
The Canadians defeated by their ultra-efficient public transport system.
I have to run now, family lunch. Enjoy the rest of the afternoon, I'll be enjoying a bit of freshly fallen snow :)
Bye Guille
no, NZ Marmite is apparently different.
I see our shortage made your news though :D www.guardian.co.u…ew-zealand-spread
Bye Guille
Do people eat it spread that thick? I don't think I could.
Once the Marmite goes the world is going to hell in a hancart/Super Aguri.
no way, i think that would kill you
marmite is nasty anyways *shudders*
Can I make a request of Mr C?
Okay, phew!
they do sell UK Marmite here but they give it a stupid name so I refuse to buy it.
upload.wikimedia.…_in_Australia.JPG
I have never tried Marmit and have no desire to do so. It does look chocolatey though
can we nominate people for number ones?
I think mr c should be nominated number one at creating awesome websites.
It's definitely NOT chocolatey
The Metro goes there, they can hop on that
The Canadians defeated by their ultra-efficient public transport system.
The only thing keeping the marmots in check is that it is almost impossible to figure out where you are going at the next Metro station of Henri-UAM from the Circuit......And that's when you are a 6 foot bipodal creature.....
remind me never to try your chocolate cakes
Go for it. He's popping in and out to keep an eye on us all.
I like this idea too!
Can he make links in the comments open in a new tab? Idiots like me keep on opening a link, closing it then wondering where the comments went.
Try right-clicking
I am not intelligent enough to remember every time.
Press CTRL and L-click the links.
We may have had this discussion before, and there may be a reason for it. I forget. We shall find out :)
like how helmut marko nominates his number one driver :)
#couldnthelpmyself
There's probably a browser setting too. What are you using?
Come on guys, no ones picked who their unluckiest Dutch F1 driver is at my blogsite....
underpressureofso…rt.wordpress.com/
Fair enough. I could learn to righht-click but my memory is pretty flimsy.
Number one gold digger.??
One day he makes $20 billion. Next day she marries him
https://twitter.c…04204851821944832
I don't know enough about them/have a terrible memory
My memory is dodgy too but I think there is a setting in the browser that lets you make links open in new tabs. I think
You don't think it was for his sparkling personality?
Do you not believe in love? Cos I don't... ;)
Haven't they been together forever?
I am just amazed he didn't have his hoodie on
9 years. becoming a doctor takes forever in america.
Snap. I only know that I remember Doornbos because his name is like doorknobs.
I wonder if he puts them up on BookFace for people to comment on
Yes. They met as undergrads and she just graduated as a doctor. It took her the same time to become a doctor as it took him to make $20 billion
i remember Albers because one year i sat behind a guy at the melbourne gp with a Christijan Albers cap and I spent the whole day in shock that he still had fans.
Come on guys, no ones picked who their unluckiest Dutch F1 driver is at my blogsite....
I don't know enough about them/have a terrible memory
Well, I have given you a list of the three most likely to jog your memory, plus Steven's around....
(I have:
1) Christijan Albers
2) Robert Doornbos
3) Jos Verstappen)
yeah, tell me about it. doctor who's still not that popular
Is there a relationship you aren't following in the media? :)
Never figured you for Zuckerberg fandom
can't be #1 until i've fixed the movable boxes.
also i thought it may be worth mentioning - i noticed the other day that the chap behind west wing/social network/moneyball aaron sorkin is making a steve jobs biopic. Should be interesting
(there's also another steve jobs film coming out from someone else where ashton kutcher is steve jobs. yeeeeeppp.)
not bad for a number two.
I would probably go Verstappen. He was a decent driver but became Schumacher's team mate and was chewed up and spat out by Benetton. A bit like Johnny Dumfries with Senna and Lotus
Mr C - did you see the tweet about the Appule Expo for Mac Professionals?
That wins #1 miscast in film history.
Are you sure you are not describing his driving style instead of his name there ?
i just read a lot of news :D
coming in 2015, bruce willis plays bill gates.
middle click opens in a new tab. if we make all links open in new tabs it takes that choice away from users. tis a tricky decision and the we've tried it both ways and concluded very little :)
it sounded like i have to go outside, so disregarded. if i can't learn it via my screen it's not worth learning ;)
I saw a tweet this morning otherwise I would never have heard of her
The beard's gonna need some airbrushing
www.people.com/pe…5367,00.html#news
Thanks. Never tried middle clicking.
well, the turtleneck is there...
I only have two buttons
#deprived
the only thing in between my two is a fingerprint scanner
Wha??
i nominate Ben Pon for being unlucky enough to be given that name.
no idea who he is, just googled dutch drivers.
Jos the Boss has my pick due to that horrific pit lane fire....., too!
I don't have any buttons on my mouse. It's magic
i like lame gizmos on my laptops :D
Worse than doorknobs?
Okay, you're just messing with my mind now
I have one of those on my work computer. I was told don't touch that because it will screw up the computer. How am I supposed to resist trying that?
No, seriously
http://www.apple.com/magicmouse/
Eats batteries for breakfast though
:D :D
I would have a breakdown if I had to use that. I NEED BUTTONS.
ah-ha. maybe we should make it an option to open in new tabs. i think we don't want to do it by default. we did, then went back on it.
everytime I've used that in the apple store it's driven me nuts!
I right click automatically. Have done for years
we have one gathering dust.
Apple make terrible mouses, but considering their desire to be all gesture-mental, it's probably a strategy.
Is that what happened to Lewis in 2007?
You can configure it in a number of ways
james allen in this monaco 2008 coverage "kazuka nakajima is having a really impresisve season"
I don't remember this
i'll raise you: Roelof Wunderink and Klaas Twisk - en.wikipedia.org/…rmula_One_drivers
But Ben Pon was only in one race. There's nothing to gauge if he was truely lucky or unlucky!
Anyway, I added him....
I agree that the hockey puck and the Mighty were both terrible but I like this one. When used with rechargeables, that is
I like Rob Slotemaker, he and Michael Schumacher could've 'made' history. As well as shoes and slots.
Carel Godin de Beaufort. Half Dutchman, half English aristocrat.
that's Jonkheer Karel Pieter Antoni Jan Hubertus (Carel) Godin de Beaufort to you ;)
ooh in paralympics news, all remaining tickets go on sale 11am tomorrow so if anyone wants to go see Alex Zanardi, they can :)
Ticket availability: www.london2012.co…ideV3_Neutral.pdf
Bleekemolen is fun to say.
they should make one with a little docky thing so it can recharge itself
What about Christijan Albers? He was unlucky enough to drive a Spyker
I am changing me name to Mark Jonkheer Karel Pieter Antoni Jan Hubertus Chapman.
Must have stopped crashing into his front jack man then..... :p
♥
You can by an inductive charge pad for it but it's quite pricey
he's definitely number one for silly name.
I would like to know how often Christine watches Blue Peter and what she thinks of the shocking news of BBC1 ditching it afte a million years
I hope they've prepared quite a few earlier before they quit
When i was young it used to blow my mind that blue peter badges let you into places for free. I remember asking my mum why she never got one for the bus.
Ooh Mr C, pop ups on mobile safari for post notifications is great too
James Allen is now having a lewis hamilton/ayrton senna freakout
I bet there are hand gestures
oh thanks. Good morning/afternoon/evening. Gorgeous morning here.
I think I'd like to be best in the world at....going with the flow and not stressing out.
That or creating a new alternative fuel source for cars that's free and doesn't pollute.
You could argue that the unluckiest Dutch drivers were all those Bleekemolens because a few of them looked promising but they never really got the breaks
woot!
Along with Wolfgang Alexander Albert Eduard Maximilian Reichsgraf Berghe von Trips. #NoblesinF1
i would also like to thank pamela for the hours of entertainment her parallel between the backstreet boys and kimi raikkonen provided me.
hello kai :)
saw tweets, but missed what happened?
Hey Kai
Free fuel is good. Keep working on that
He wasn't Dutch though
I was watching it almost always up until they changed the scheduling this year and it fell off my radar a bit. Makes perfect sense to put it on CBBC because after the digital switching is done, everyone should have it.
Yeah, but those two in a team. Imagine having their names put above the garage.
her friend dragged her to the concert and she didnt know anything about them and i was on the other side of the stadium so she tweeted me "who is the BSB Kimi lookalike? ;-)" and in an instant my life was changed.
All these years I'd never known why he was the only non-Finn blonde I'd ever wanted to marry :D
no chance if they can't spell hulkenberg.
Buildings down in Italy after a 5.1 earthquake.
5.1 shouldn't do that
hehe. we need pictures.
Where in Italy?
earthquake.usgs.g…es/usb0009tu7.php
i cant find a recent picture of nick carter showing that hes brought back his 1999 hairstyle because without the floppy hair the resemblance isnt there.
I tweeted this one http://twitpic.com/9mel4o to my friend I was at the concert with because she doesn't know who Kimi is, she could see it too.
:D
Damn. Nice area too. I'd love to travel around northern Italy in a couple of years time.
I imagine the buildings were a few hundred years old, at least
Awful news :(
Near Bologna
how big was their initial shock though? in Chch all the 5 point something aftershocks bought stuff down that was already weakened by the 6.3.
So far I think Jos has two/three picks.
Every Dutch driver under the sun has one.
What are you guys doing to me. I am letting you guys name a minor plot device in my blog that I am going to post here...... :p
Looks like they have had 6 earthquakes today. Biggest is a 6.0. Cumulative effect will do a lot of damage.
Bologna is really nice and the home of bolgnese
earthquake.usgs.g…Maps/10/15_45.php
welcome to sidepodcast...
Modena is fairly close too
Using the name Jonkheer Karel Pieter Antoni Jan Hubertus (Carel) Godin de Beaufort is in no way minor.
Ooooh, awkward typo.
http://t.co/asWvG8q7
What a great typo
It is too close to Imola for my liking.....
Any excuse necessary to improve the track...
The San Marino circuit that isn't in San Marino
Not really. I suspect both versions of that report where accurate..... :p
Just like the Swiss GP hasn't been held in Switzerland for 60 years and the Luxemburg GP has never been held in Luxmburg
Like the Swiss GP in Dijon.
Luxembourg isn't big enough for a post office, let alone a GP...
Well reprave it back to it's "pre-char-boiled berger" fire state, yes, but you can not really improve on that circuit configuration.....
Well, maybe by getting rid of the Villeneuve chicane......
Have you seen the wedding pic? They look like robots.
But nothing like Romney....
Like San Marino is not any bigger than a decent sized city park?
Wait, are you saying that Zuckerberg is human?
lies! lies and slander!
Mmmmm, 2009 monaco is on now. Brawn!!
Run Jenson, run like the wind!
That was my highlight of 2009. Although I'm sure Lukeh and Lou disagree...
It was an amazing moment!
*droid*
More amazing than a Woobens win?
www.google.com/im…QEwAg&dur=453
He looks smug. Shouldn't he look happy?
Is Lou at Brands today? how's it going?
He doesn't do emotion. He's happy with his latest deal, looks like.
They stand like they don't know each other
Oh my, judging on a text I just got I think Lou may have just exploded in Brands...
heheh, who'd she meet?
Going by the tweets she is enjoying it
She just text me now IN EXTREME CAPS!!!!
turns out she's just said hello to a certain Jenson and Jessy...
ah, well, at least she went happy, no doubt in the vicinity of one JB.
yep, that'll do it
upload.wikimedia.…mola_2009.svg.png WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO IMOLA?!
yay!
I have told her to breeeeeathe :)
Sounds like she's having a fab day though, I think she's determined to find di Resta. Although JB and Jessy is a mighty fine resolution for a day for her I'd say!
That will make her happy. She was tweeting about trying to find Paul di Resta
I see some Eeeking. :)
:D
Well they changed the circuit to that circuit configuration that you have displayed. I can remember when Tamburello was a proper corner and Villeneuve as a flat out kink to Tosa, back before Berger got toasted. Heck I have that race on VHS somewhere....
I think Lou should be nominated number one eek'er.
:) :)
No, I panicked because I thought the pit lane was at the top. Crazy head can't understand things properly.
Goodness, forgot about the Renault Creme Egg livery.
Did you have to mention that. Now it will be stuck in my head for another 6 months
mmm, chocolate
No you are right Mark. The pit lane is at the top of the circuit. Your picture is just upside down....
{Wonders how long that will mess with his head}
#blameskysportsf1#blamesutil
I am sucking my thumb now. I need reassurance.
Here's a slinky on a treadmill to distract you
www.youtube.com/w…amp;v=711bZ_pLusQ
oh my, i need to buy a treadmill now. my slinky is useless on my stairs.
w.o.a.h
I could watch this for hours.
Right click, Mark. :)
The dramatic music is brilliant too
:)
Lou is now chatting to Jake apparently!
That reminds me, I owe you a milky bar, must remember to bring it to the London meetup
I was just going to say that. Makes it so funny.
Mind the edge Slinky!
Hi all. Concert went well yesterday, after show party went on until we toasted the sunrise on the beach. A little tired now!
She is having a great day
Hey Janna
Sounds like you had a great night
ooh, at 1:42 it almost loses it, then makes a side step kind of recovery... that creeps me out for some reason.
Hi Janna :)
Hi janna, that sounds awesome
Can't wait for Slinky 2: Escalator
Amazing how the smallest things can be most entertaining.
hehe
Looks like someone's tried that as well. Not as riveting though
We did, concert went well, combined choirs so we heard some fabulous performances. Then someone had made a triple layer chocolate fudge cake for the after show party :)
By the end I'm rooting for Slinky like Bilbo going up the mountain to destroy the ring.
the smallest things in life are always the best things!
No need to wait
www.youtube.com/w…tch?v=JIPK2NQ85Fc
:)
None shall climb!
That's Guy Martin's long lost brother surely
I like the giant rainbow slinky
Right, I'm calm after watching that. :)
Muse are on a bus!
http://t.co/QHsFCwcy
with terrible facial hair!
Both Jake and JB are so lovely! Paffett and Pauli are very good as hiding. Everyone should come next year. It's awesome!
How about a Human Slinky?
www.youtube.com/w…tch?v=d0Eln4gneYk
Freaky
Still my favourite slinky video
www.youtube.com/w…tch?v=wGIZKETKKdw
Skip past annoying guy at the beginning
And the answer is
www.youtube.com/w…tch?v=eCMmmEEyOO0
Still looks impossible after all the times I have watched it
So worth going then
ooh how long til they run? since im still awake and all
"Does this only apply to slinkys? " "No it applies to the real world." :)
Do other countries make such a big deal out of the torch carrying when they host the Olympics?
5:30 apparently sooo.. about 90 minutes away
judging by this tennis i might still be up, the men still haven't started!
Yes.
How did it work in America? Did they visit the entire country or only the state?
www.youtube.com/w…re=watch_response
This is even weirder. Clinky with tennis ball attached. Only lasts a few seconds but boggles the brain
www.youtube.com/w…re=watch_response
was it athens that sent it to every prior host city? that was an epic relay.
To answer the question in the post, I would like to be number one in the world at keeping up with people. I can get very involved in work and what I'm doing and forget to text, tweet or comment with friends.
oh they think tennis is 90 minutes away as well. stupid rain.
Generally it goes to a load of countries. This time they stuck it in a plane in Greece and sent ot straight to Cornwall. No other countries involved
they knooowww
Does tennis have its own Ted?
in 2010 it stayed in canada
It went around the whole country. I had a relative run part of it in Florida. There's a map here
olympic-museum.de…hes/torch1996.htm
They were using it for warmth.
good idea :D
at the australian open they have a courtside reporter but they have to whisper. they certainly aint no ted.
Ha ha
What did North Dakota do to not get it?
huh, interesting.
Torch Relay staff resarched historical sites and key moments in US Olympic history to create a route that would showcase the US.In summer 1994, the senior manager of operations secretly journeyed cross-country to determine the initial proposed route and undertake an initial mileage measurement. He also drove the secondary roads to ensure the route was passable, tracked mileage for a preliminary distance estimate, and resarched local folklore and landmarks to choose celebration sites that ensured the route would pass by places important to the local pobulation. Many ideas generated on that drive were adopted in the final route.
In 2000 it went to a load of places before Australia. In the past they have even sent torches into space. Although they were not lit
www.olympic-museu…hes/torch2000.htm
Bore everyone?
Given that 4800 feet of film was used to shot that video the actual time envolved is about what 0.08 of a second?
not much. :)
they take this stuff seriously!
In Britain, we asked the sponsors where they wanted it to go. #TheSellOutOlympics
yeah. I like that eternal flame idea and the spirit of it all
The most sacred, dramatic, and anticipated moment of the Opening Ceremony has arrived - the arrival of the Olympic flame. It has been 84 days since its arrival in the United States, which, together with the 16 days of competition to come, will equal a symbolic 100 days. In the US, the flame has traveled more than 16,000 miles (25,749 km) in a journey that will conclude momentarily in Atlanta.
Not surprized. Where our own spearate state....Why should the touch cross national border?
well it did go into the usa a little bit but only the bits that you can see from canada :D
then there's the traffic, the crowds, the cost, and all that daily trying-to-get-around stuff. But there was a great spirit to it all and it was much better than being in the usual crowd crush stuff.
If you've accidently closed a tab (so long as you've got an internet window open) you can press CTRL+SHIFT+T to reopen closed tabs in order.
(Wow - I'm on the ball with my replies today.)
I like the idea but I don't like the thought everyone will be sick of it all before the games start.
Everyone but Amy, that is. No one's stopping Amy :)
they've been surprised at the size of the crowd in the uk, its put them behind schedule but its nice to see people interested because i've heard way more negative olympics stuff than i have positive from most of the host country :D
It was the other way around. Up North in -40 Celcuis, weather the kerosene inside the touch kept freezing solid,so we would have to blowtouch the touch to melt the fuel inside it to re-light the flame....
Love this tip, thanks! :)
I am 5 days away from it being a year since i got my first tickets and back then i was thinking 'can i really stay excited for that long?'
yes. yes i can.
Were you massively distracted by the slinkies? I was... `
it makes me a little bit sad that there's so much negativity about it all, I can understand it hampers the day to day life of londoners for a month but it's the olympics! embrace it as much as you can :D
Hypnotic doesn't even cover it!
it really is a lovely time, so many countries of the world getting to together to compete in sports and leave differences behind.
but then again moaning about something is part of being british!
seriously, i know they'll never come to my country but i'd be so happy if they did
You can right click to open old tabs too
You're moaning about the moaning. MOANCEPTION.
It is North Dakota the only thing good out of North Dakota is the interstate highway.... :p
lukeh and pat and i can cheer different teams while sitting side by side. lovely. :D
yeah, I wouldn't want to take that away from anyone invested in the moaning. :)
Or alt + s then pick recently closed tabs or windows
SPC goes Olympic :)
It's not the games people have the biggest issue over. I think it's the over-commercialisation and media fanaticism.
When the games arrive, I'm sure it'll be a great spectacle
i hope theres a daily event page :D
don't have an alt.
Command+Shift+T is good.
We can play 'Where's Amy?'
some people have an issue over the whole thing, i think andy taylor might be one judging on some of the tweets i've had from him :D
you'll have a headstart at that game!
It's the Option Symbol, I think
You're right. We had the same media onslaught here, of course. The real purpose and reason for the games did clarify here once they arrived.
And people say Apples are better!
I'm not particulraly fussed by the Olympics, but I'm not going to ruin it for others.
aha. :)
hehehe. excellent!
i will have a spare kiwi flag if you feel like borrowing it though :P
It's there, my eyes are going,I guess.
Will you have a Finnish flag too?
At least pictures of tracks aren't freaking you out.
thank heavens for small favors.
i'll have it with me because i'll take it to germany but who knows if it'll get an outing at the olympics, depends once the draws come out for the sports i have tickets to if i'm seeing finland in anything :D
i think my nephew has a new zealand rugby top. Maybe i should wear that!
It is the millenium stadium after all
So, I think I'm ready to get up now. I'm hungry.
wear an all blacks top and cheer for GB and confuse our neighbours :)
GOOO SPORT!
Chelsea have arrived at Stamford Bridge with the Champions League cup precariously close to the edge of the top deck.
Who was it that dropped a cup like that from a bus?
Haha, real madrid! it went under the bus and everything :)
i was kind of like that at the rugby the other night because i was cheering the melbourne team but i was also cheering the canterbury team because i'm a good south islander.
That was it. Mega Fail
A keeper for Ajax once dropped a trophy and a fan ran off with it. :)
www.youtube.com/w…tch?v=r_8s1cIrF_I
So bad!"
they need to keep it safe for sauber photo ops!
Not surprized. Where our own spearate state....Why should the touch cross national border?
well it did go into the usa a little bit but only the bits that you can see from canada :D
Actually. No it did not cross the border. Mind you, there more than a few towns where the actual border goes lengthwise down someone's dining room table, as that's what happens when a line of latitude is picked as the border, but thr touch itself did not cross the actual border in 2010.
Apparently, Chelsea have submitted a bid to take the Battersea Power Station site. I sincerely hope that doesn't go ahead.
The new appartments going up near it will make it only visible from the river soon :(
www.youtube.com/w…tch?v=KUb2mbvYXZA The Ajax drop.
Read about that, they want to turn the iconic towers into the North Stand of a stadium
roger waters, david gilmour and nick mason are spluttering on their tea somewhere at such a thought.
If they build something there, the four corners should have chimneys on.
Apparently the chimneys etc are being restored and are staying. But they probs had to say that to put the bid in - I think that'll change.
I hope you're wrong, but I like to be optimistic occasionally.
Another ridiculous but true story
Staines has renamed itself Staines-Upon-Thames
www.bbc.co.uk/new…d-surrey-18118309
Sow's ear/silk purse methinks
The sad thing is before I openmed that link I thought to myself 'I bet it's just so people don't think of ali g!' just as a jokey thought
and... well... wow.
No one would get planning approval to knock the towers down. The last bid wanted to demolish them and recreate them in their original pristine form and was refused.
Can anyone explain why the BBC website is incapable of using more than one sentence in a paragraph?
oh my goodness yes! Also, the porche drivers even crash into each other in the paddock. so funny. Just found Gary!
Maybe the story was tweeted in to the editor
Missing hashtags.
Changing it to Staines - upon - Thames is going to really going to throw people off the scent
Another first world problem solved. Trying to charge your phone in the dark: fixed!
www.engadget.com/…lite-iphone-ipad/
Check the video
oooooh!
I do not see the logic of giving someone a more precise location of a town that few people would have an interest in visiting.....
I guess I could give the Thamas a wide berth, but then I would miss London and Greenwich.
I would like to be Amy-upon-Thames
Amy-upon-Awesome. Awesome is a location too.
It's not about it's location, that's the PR version.
It's about it's terrible [and deserved] reputation
unless it's just very very dark in cornwall, the olympic torch stream is just black.
If you think that's good, wait until my Pebble arrives
www.kickstarter.c…phone-and-android
my dad grew up on Thames Street, he could legitimately be Dad-upon-Thames
that thing looks so awesome
Aiii
You can be Amy-upon-Thames if you like. Changing your name is easy
Amy-Upon-Yarra might be more appropriate :)
I need a different name for each day of the week, I can't stick to one. This is why I have no tattoos.
i think pebble is a bit flawed sadly, we'll see when it's released though. should work okay with android, but at the moment, iphone over bluetooth appears limited.
I've changed my name today already.
and Amy-Upon-Leith for when I'm back in Dunedin :D
Errr, why are you in the dark trying to charge your phone in the first place. Either turn on the light or good luck trying to charge anything during a power outage.....
Coomon Sense over another stupid electronic device....
That's why brackets are useful when you login to SPC
You have a Leith there too?
Could be, we'll see. I've bought two to sell the other on eBay so at least it'll be subsidised.
Or I could make a big loss, I suppose
everything we have we stole from Edinburgh :D
Aus and NZ are full of names from the UK
Is your Leith as depressed today because their team got beaten 5-1 by their rivals in the cup final which they have not won for 111 years?
no, its just a Water :D
Dunedin in particular is allll Edinburgh. So unoriginal.
I was quite surprised when I met someone in Sydney who told me they were from Newcastle
Were they semi-naked and holding beer?
its quite depressing when you meet Australians who honestly don't realise theres another one.
first south wales, now newcastle too... shocking ;)
#BlameSilverchair
Yeah, New Newcastle was the first choice, I bet
You'd think the NEW in New South Wales would be a giveaway.
Hehehe :)
Newercastle!
:D
It worked for New New York. And New New New New New New New New New New New New New New New New York.
I would like to see that series of Futurama. it must be very far ahead
What would Frank Sinatra had done were it still New Amsterdam?
I thought it was Doctor Who- series two, Face of Boe...
Oh yeah, Doctor Who did it as well!
New New New New New England wasn't a tip off to many, I'm afraid.
Sounds like the Vicar of Dibley version nearly
It more depressing meeting a nuclear tech guy in Newcastle,Ontario who's never heard of Sdyney, Nova Scotia.... It is after all, the country. about 2400 km away but still.....
was just thinking that, good old Frank :D
Sung it in Dutch?
I got asked by several people if I was from London, Ontario when I was in Montreal
"New Amsterdam, New Amsterdam.?"
ahhhh watching these races on sky sports is making me so excited for Monaco. What a circuit, what a place.
Still very much gutted it couldn't work out with Ari :(
boourns :(
What?
Not surprized. London, Ontario is another university town, with legendary party stories to match. Worth my neck to state that Western University (London) is on of Canada's more noted University normally in Laws and Medience..
Lukeh is bffs with Ari Vatenan
True story
Are they throwing celery at the Chelsea bus?
Is it because of *that* football song?
A few years back I won a compeition to create a video supporting Ari Vatanen and he offered tickets to Monaco and a lunch with himself, but couldn't include travel and accomadation. Due to lack of funds for that side of it and utter planning fail on my part, it didn't work out which was really frustrating because a) it's monaco and it's ari vatanen!! b) i reeaallllyy wanted to take lou and partially watch her reaction to being in the monaco paddock and c) IT'S MONACO!!
Long life ahead yet to visit though :)
Wow. I wish I had famous friends. Especially if they were world champion at something.
i should offer planning classes. mmmm, planning.
You did tell them that London should be a eight hour drive (one-way) trip away from Montreal?
Can you plan my life for me? I need someone to help with the tricky bits.
No, I said "Do I sound Canadian?"
you should! I would plan to join it, but it'd lead to a lack of planning
Work hard, play hard, drink more beer and laugh lots
Easy
i'm not sure its something you teach, i think you need to be born with it :D
*pokes head around corner*
"last orders at bar sidepodcast"
*psst* the indycar bump day thread is hosting a bit of a lock-in for people interested in single-seater racing.
guh, i wish my mum planned ahead.
I teach it every day. It takes effort if you're not born with it. If people aren't invested in it, there's no point.
At this time every year I keep bugging a monarchist friend I know by the name of Caroline, who lives in the small Ontario town of Hanover. Still has not gotten me any closer to hang with Albert and Steph at the Royal Box at the Grand Prix. :P
hehe
ooh no more for me squire, not whilst i can still stand :)
ahh i dont like effort. i hereby hand my classes to kai :D
Teach us, oh Great One.
oh boy. Too much on my plate already at the mo.
Woah - it seems that all I've done it sit in the corner and stare into my drink. Great atmosphere though.
:)
This accurately describes my afternoon too
The number of times I've looked up and seen 30+ comments pending ...
Marvellous afternoon, thanks peoples. You can all be number one at being awesome.
You used up your Sunday energy partying at the beach. A worthwhile effort
"Thanks for consulting Kai's School of Planning. At the moment Kai will begin classes in late June due current scheduling conflicts. Consider this your first practicum. Looking forward to planning with you. Cheers."
off last drinks are well timed, i just fell off my bed
Thanks folks. Till next time
oooh, i wanna be #1 barman!
"now clear off home"
Bye all!
Bye.
*Moves into the next room*
good night, last one out turn off the light :)
