Sidepodcast Hangout - Surprising turn of events

What uncertain decisions have you made that turned out better than expected?

Published by Christine Blachford

It may have escaped your notice, but this week there was some news about a driver switching to a new team - a move which most people have declared as unwise. We all thought this before, when Button made his surprising career move, but that turned out okay. Have you ever done something worrying, made a decision you thought would be bad, or been to an event you were dreading, only for it to turn out better than expected, maybe even fabulous?

    Good afternoon!

  • Alex Andronov 30/09/2012 at 15:06:14

I have not, repeat NOT seen Doctor Who yet, so I may suddenly have to run away if it is discussed.

  • Alex Andronov 30/09/2012 at 15:06:32

But of course don't let me stop you - if indeed there is anyone here :)

  • Will^ 30/09/2012 at 15:08:00

Afternoon - it didn't tell me it was open!!

  • Jordan F1 30/09/2012 at 15:08:58

    Good morning from Tundraland everyone!

I have not, repeat NOT seen Doctor Who yet, so I may suddenly have to run away if it is discussed

And that decision has turned out to be be better than expected in what way, Giggles?

  • Alex Andronov 30/09/2012 at 15:09:29

And that decision has turned out to be be better than expected in what way, Giggles?

    heh!

  • Christine 30/09/2012 at 15:10:00

Ooh, hello all. 3pm crept up quickly.

  • Mark 30/09/2012 at 15:11:34

I have a long history of making bad choices. Discussing all of them would take too long.

  • Christine 30/09/2012 at 15:12:09

I have a long history of making bad choices. Discussing all of them would take too long.

Only ones that turned out alright!

  • Will^ 30/09/2012 at 15:12:15

I have a long history of making bad choices. Discussing all of them would take too long.

Not discussing them might class as a better choice then ;)

  • Alex Andronov 30/09/2012 at 15:12:25

I have a long history of making bad choices. Discussing all of them would take too long.

But bad choices that ended up as better choices

  • Christine 30/09/2012 at 15:12:43

Quitting my job to write a book seemed like a crazy thing to do. Worked out okay in the end.

  • Jordan F1 30/09/2012 at 15:12:49

A long time ago, back before 1982, I decided to be a Dallas/SF fan in footaball, a Montreal fan in Hockey and a Boston Fan in baseball, and a Williams Fan in F1 racing....

I never expected the Red Sox to ever win the World Series, let alone two in my lifetime....

  • Mark 30/09/2012 at 15:12:50

Not discussing them might class as a better choice then ;)

    Yes. This is true.

  • Christine 30/09/2012 at 15:15:02

Also, I would say that back then, putting it all out there in a silly podcast about Formula One seemed like the worst idea ever. That might have worked out okay too.

  • Will^ 30/09/2012 at 15:15:23

Quitting my job to write a book seemed like a crazy thing to do. Worked out okay in the end.

That is a rather dramatic move

  • Jordan F1 30/09/2012 at 15:15:31

Hey Christine, did you and Mr. C ever manage to play around with Google Drive yet? I have sent three vids your way.....

  • Christine 30/09/2012 at 15:16:11

That is a rather dramatic move

Hehe, it wasn't quite as simple as all that, but it sounds good :)

  • Will^ 30/09/2012 at 15:16:42

Hehe, it wasn't quite as simple as all that, but it sounds good :)

As a headline to the story, it does that :)

  • Christine 30/09/2012 at 15:16:47

Hey Christine, did you and Mr. C ever manage to play around with Google Drive yet? I have sent three vids your way.....

To be honest, no! I saw an email about the Bangles or something, figured it wasn't to me :)

  • Christine 30/09/2012 at 15:17:43

Who is planning to get up at crazy o'clock for F1 next week?

  • Steven Roy 30/09/2012 at 15:18:14

I didn't know there was a hangout today. I made a decision to check sidepodcast out now. Hopefully this turns out to be a good decision

  • Steven Roy 30/09/2012 at 15:18:25

Who is planning to get up at crazy o'clock for F1 next week?

    Me

  • Will^ 30/09/2012 at 15:18:30

    Me. When is it?

  • Alex Andronov 30/09/2012 at 15:18:35

  • Will^ 30/09/2012 at 15:19:34

    Qualifying 6am, Race 7am.

    Easy, but maybe not FP1+3.

  • Pat W 30/09/2012 at 15:20:10

Hello. I think I'm similar to Mark in that all my work/studying/moving decisions have all turned out pants.

On the plus side, I took a gamble on applying for a Paralympics ticket and ended up with a great seat in the stadium on the best night of the Games, that was pretty cool.

  • Jordan F1 30/09/2012 at 15:20:16

Hey Christine, did you and Mr. C ever manage to play around with Google Drive yet? I have sent three vids your way.....

To be honest, no! I saw an email about the Bangles or something, figured it wasn't to me :)

Yeah, well I would like the results of this experiment of sending video via Google Drive to answer about a question posed by a Sidepodhangout about uncertain decisions that I have made in the past.... :P

Talk about closing the loop there!

  • Pat W 30/09/2012 at 15:20:34

    Qualifying 6am, Race 7am.

I might watch it in bed.

Important question: Is it on the Beeb?

  • Christine 30/09/2012 at 15:21:07

Important question: Is it on the Beeb?

Nope. It's one on, one off till the end of the season.

  • Alex Andronov 30/09/2012 at 15:21:37

The other day I needed to go out to lunch and I was really hungry so I was about to go out. Somebody said, "ooh Alex just before you go out can you help me with this thing". Against my better judgement and my tummy I said OK. It then immediately poured with rain for an hour, by the time I was done with helping the person it was sunny again and there was a rainbow :)

  • Jordan F1 30/09/2012 at 15:22:15

Who is planning to get up at crazy o'clock for F1 next week?

It it Suzuka, so I have to stay up until 2 am for it to start. But is a decent track, so it is a certain decision that it will have good racing...

I had an Indian takeaway on Friday night and I tried one of their specialities, no idea what it was going to be like, and it was much nicer than the thing I was going to order before I saw the menu.

My friend has a theory that he says has served him very well, he always orders the longest thing on the menu. It means he tries lots of new things.

  • Steven Roy 30/09/2012 at 15:25:54

Mr C made a decision to tip his favourite Strictly dancer. That didn't work out well

    Points for Christine

  • Alex Andronov 30/09/2012 at 15:27:10

Longest name. He can never remember if it's supposed to be most words or most letters.

  • Alex Andronov 30/09/2012 at 15:35:07

On the event I was dreading front...

When I was nowt but a lad, knee high to a grasshopper (or 16). The internet was on the new side (1996 for those keeping track). I had been talking to a few people about music that I liked on the NME chat board. Beck, one of my favourite musicians was coming to gig at the Brixton Academy, I wanted to go, and so were a lot of the people on this board.

I was terrified, but also excited, but was worried the whole thing might go terribly wrong. The internet was much more of a frightening thing in those days (not to say it isn't now, but NOBODY met people from the internet).

Not only did I go to my first gig, but I also met my first people from the internet, both of which were life long habits that I have continued to enjoy enormously.

The first person I ever met in real life from the internet was my mate Kris, who I still speak to every day and see all the time, and he is the chap who orders the longest thing on the Indian menu (in words or letters not length of dish).

Also his partner worked with Katherine, and his partner set Katherine and I up...

So while I was nervous to go, and I was very scared, it did turn out to be one of the best decisions of my life.

  • Christine 30/09/2012 at 15:38:07

So while I was nervous to go, and I was very scared, it did turn out to be one of the best decisions of my life.

Well, we can't beat a story like that!

    Crikey, that's good.

  • Steven Roy 30/09/2012 at 15:40:36

Unless someone has something better but I am not sure what that would be

  • Alex Andronov 30/09/2012 at 15:40:52

    Sorry about that...

  • Alex Andronov 30/09/2012 at 15:42:30

Maybe I should have waited until the last few minutes of the Hangout?

Now somebody might catch me on the Underbite / Overbite / Undercut whatever...

  • Ryan 30/09/2012 at 15:42:41

    What is up fellows.

Considering I was terrified about moving down to Huddersfield, three weeks in it seems like a great decision. Doesn't exactly top Alex, but hey, a little something thats ongoing for me now.

Excellent! 3 weeks in a good yardstick in my estimation. Great that it's going well :)

  • Alex Andronov 30/09/2012 at 15:44:50

3 weeks in was when I decided in my head that I'd made a mistake going to university and that I should leave. 6 months in I decided to actually do something about it!

Pretty much the same here, but then I made the error of trying again the following year and that didn't work either! But you have to try these things or you'll never know.

Meeting different people from different places and different backgrounds will probably teach you more than any course will. That doesn't mean you should take it easy work wise

  • Steven Roy 30/09/2012 at 15:50:40

As there are University that are known for certain departments worldwide, even in their undergraduate courses, it is a very bad decision to be waiting for university to kick your study habits up a grade....

When I was nowt but a lad... (here he goes - you know he's changed since he's become a father ;) )...

    *ahem*

I had a great Stats teacher at school who at the beginning of each double Maths class on a Friday afternoon would start with a clipping from that weeks newspaper with a piece of wrongly used statistics in a news report. Before introducing the first of these in the first class he mentioned this stat, apparently there is an exact correlation between the number of suicides in Helsinki and the number of Fridges sold by a Comet in Croydon (and the statistic had been accurate for the last 6 years at the time).

But of course Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc...

I've seen people using the defence that Mercedes has won the constructors championship more recently than McLaren as if that counts for anything (the championship itself and also it was a total blip for that team).

I can't remember ever having to divide by 132 on countdown or having to end up with 56.24242424.

Mercedes performance ever since it was BAR is no reason to sign for them. I can only assume the Lauda appointment is an indication of change in the structure of the team that convinced Lewis to sign

But they have not. They where called Brawn back then! And if you can transfer championships between origanzations like that, you might as well call then Honda as oppsed to Mercedes....

I've seen people using the defence that Mercedes has won the constructors championship more recently than McLaren as if that counts for anything (the championship itself and also it was a total blip for that team).

Mercedes performance ever since it was BAR is no reason to sign for them. I can only assume the Lauda appointment is an indication of change in the structure of the team that convinced Lewis to sign

I guess Lewis is looking at the team's performance from back when they were called "Matra".... :P

  • lou 30/09/2012 at 16:09:29

Lukeh is playing on his 3DS (which is so strange!!) and i'm procrastinating from doing a project proposal.. cause they are long and i don't want to accept year 3 is beginning!

What is everyone else up to this afternoon?

  • Steven Roy 30/09/2012 at 16:10:06

I don't see where Lauda fits in to their structure.

I don't understand it either. Non-exec chairman is an odd position for him to have in what is effectively a wholly owned subsidiary of Daimler-Benz. I don't understand giving him a non-executive position at all but I have to assume it is the first step on a pre-planned path that Hamilton is aware of

  • lou 30/09/2012 at 16:11:00

i have just 1 question regarding the Lewis move.. how on earth do we tell the two drivers apart now, they'll both have yellow helmets.

I was going to do some blogging as I've got about 18 posts in a queue but blogging is hard, so I decided to attack a huge pile of paperwork and old magazines. Turns out I've got untouched/unopened Autosports going back to March.

Also I should visit the parents at some stage but I can't be bothered to go outside.

I dunno... Nico's is more of a neon greenish-yellow to match the t-bar above his cockpit. Hamilton's is pretty yellow.

  • Alex Andronov 30/09/2012 at 16:22:57

The Beano hasn't been shut down yet? I thought that was imminent

The Beano says proudly on it's header that it is the worlds most popular comic. So I guess it must be selling more than Batman? Although that seems hard to believe.

  • Steven Roy 30/09/2012 at 16:23:13

I seem to recall Senna being a Williams driver at one point.....

The Williams was a good car. They had won the previous two titles where McLaren had been nowhere. In all probability Senna would have won the 94 title. Despite having a crooked car Schumacher had to take out Hill in Adelaide to win the title and Senna would have scored a lot more points than Hill

  • Steven Roy 30/09/2012 at 16:24:55

I heard a thing on the radio a couple of weeks ago that DC Thompson were discussing closing the Beano and Dandy down because they were only selling 8000 copies. I think Batman and other comic books must sell more than that

Despite having a crooked car Schumacher had to take out Hill in Adelaide to win the title and Senna would have scored a lot more points than Hill

But Schumacher, when he finished a race, was either 1st or 2nd, a a more reliable car in that he had fewr retirements, and only won by one point becasue Schuie was benched for a full quater of the season due to bans and DSQ's.

Hill had 16 races to reach 91 points whereas Schuie had only 12 to reach 92. Despite what you say about Schuie, Either Hill is awful as a driver, or his car was, as Senna did two DNF's in the Williams before imola, and they removed all the drivers aids that year. I like to think the car itself was the pits.

  • Alex Andronov 30/09/2012 at 16:41:48

I'll actually get a better response if I post this here... Here's my upcoming blog post for 10th October...

Have you ever worn nail varnish / a tie?

Here's a question for you. Have you ever worn nail varnish / a tie? For some the question will be only ever one or the other, for some it will be both but on separate occasions, if you have ever been a goth then it could easily be both a the same time.

I have worn both. A tie quite regularly, nail varnish only when at parties growing up it was something that would "happen" to you. I'm not quite sure why, but I can tell you it was almost always 3am and a young lady would say, "hey would you like some nail varnish"?

    So what about you?

I don't think Hill was a great driver and certainly not close to being as good as Senna. Had Senna lived he would have put a lot more pressure on Schumacher. The car needed a few races to get sorted out and then Senna would have done even better than Hill did and on many occasions Hill would have been between Senna and Schumacher.

Yep! I've wear nail varnish all the time (just a glimpse at my twitter will tell you that). However I've only ever warn a tie at school during the 2 years they insisted on it. We were allowed to wear clear nail varnish at school then, so if clear nail varnish counts then yes ive warn both at the same time. :)

The car needed a few races to get sorted out and then Senna would have done even better than Hill did and on many occasions Hill would have been between Senna and Schumacher.,/blockquote>

The problem there is that Senna's car, Williams #2, had five more retirements after Senna's death.....I manage that the pit crew would not have changed, so you have to wonder how much was the car itself breaking down.

I never understood making kids wear ties. I seem to remember writing a post for a long deceased website comparing school ties to F1 safety. It was about how things are considered acceptable if they have been around long enough. Imagine if ties were a new fashion and you had to pitch to the authorities a plan for children to wear very strong cloth in a slip knot round their necks.

I am not sure that was one of the improvements on my list. The last driver to wear one must have been Mike Hawthorn who retired after winning the title in 1958. He always raced in a bow tie. He retired because racing was too dangerous and was killed on the Guildford bypass in January 1959

Not quite what I meant. Looking at it from the point of view of the engineer. The Drivers' stupid head is in the way blocking the tie from spinning.... We need to remove the driver's head from his shouldrs to get the bow-tie spinning...

The bow tie could be used as a turbo-charger to feed more air into the engine. All it would need is some ducting up the side of the helmet

  • Jordan F1 30/09/2012 at 17:22:19

Some people might suggest that one or two drivers this year have already lost their heads.

Yes, but those drivers are currently racing in Indycar....We had to make way for Senna.... :P

Texas has an 85mph speed limit. That has to be a good decision. Although I would love to know why American speed limits always end in 5 rather than 0. I suppose we should be grateful that NASA don't set speed limits or they would end in 1

    I would not like that.

In Texas, what is there to hit?

  • Pat W 30/09/2012 at 17:25:56

Managed to sort the big pile of paper, and had a quick flick through some of those old Autosports. Is there an easy way to switch to the digital version and is it cheaper?

Looks like there is a digital + web option which is cheaper than what I'm on now, but I think I'll have to call them..

  • Steven Roy 30/09/2012 at 17:26:16

The problem is they all have guns there . I am sure Montana still has some unlimited roads

I like France's 80 (130km/h) limit, it would be good to have that in places here. About time roads limits were set on merit not blanket restrictions.. there are places I'd like it lowered too.

Would be great fun to unleash something down one of those.

True. But we still need a way to keep the bow-tie turbine spinning. The blades would be shacking either the chin or helmut of the driver so unless we cover over the tie over, and in which case, nobody can tell that is its just a spinning bow tie or we leave it exposed and hope the driver can withstand it.

Maldie crashes into walls far to often as it is....

Sounds like Texans treat motorway limits like Brits do :)

You put the bow tie on a shaft that sits 3 inches ahead of the driver's chin. With the correct ducting you should still be able to see it from head on

Quick Q - are there any updated plans for NFL threads?

I don't think there we've made plans either way. It's up to you guys what you think is best.

  • Pat W 30/09/2012 at 17:51:47

Anybody got plans for the rest of the day? Maybe some future decisions to take? :)

I'm having a bit of food then heading off to visit parents. When I get back I may do one of those blog posts, unsure which one. I re-started my film reviews and I've got another to do so perhaps that.

I am also blogging... seems like the most popular Sunday afternoon activity!

Potential for film-watching, although Mr C has his code-head on so it depends if I can snap him out of it or not :)

    Better than a flu-head!

A film would be good, quite tempted to stay and watch one but I ought to go..

Very true! We're about 90% healthy now, just some lingering sniffles, I think.

Oh that's good. Rest and blogging is a good way back to health. I had a slight headache/sniffles thing in the week and I was worried I'd caught what you had!

Look forward to reading your reviews :)

So far I've done Cowboys & Aliens which I just about remembered from a while back, and Dredd from the other week. Total Recall to write up.

I think the threads should stay the same but we should try and get as many people as possible together for one game per week

So on the subject of this post, how is going to Montreal and New York next year to see the Grand prix?

It may have escaped your notice, but this week there was some news about a driver switching to a new team - a move which most people have declared as unwise. We all thought this before, when Button made his surprising career move, but that turned out okay. Have you ever done something worrying, made a decision you thought would be bad, or been to an event you were dreading, only for it to turn out better than expected, maybe even fabulous?
