Sidepodcast Hangout - Surprising turn of events
What uncertain decisions have you made that turned out better than expected?
Published by Christine Blachford
It may have escaped your notice, but this week there was some news about a driver switching to a new team - a move which most people have declared as unwise. We all thought this before, when Button made his surprising career move, but that turned out okay. Have you ever done something worrying, made a decision you thought would be bad, or been to an event you were dreading, only for it to turn out better than expected, maybe even fabulous?

Good afternoon!
I have not, repeat NOT seen Doctor Who yet, so I may suddenly have to run away if it is discussed.
But of course don't let me stop you - if indeed there is anyone here :)
Afternoon - it didn't tell me it was open!!
Good morning from Tundraland everyone!
And that decision has turned out to be be better than expected in what way, Giggles?
heh!
Ooh, hello all. 3pm crept up quickly.
I have a long history of making bad choices. Discussing all of them would take too long.
Only ones that turned out alright!
Not discussing them might class as a better choice then ;)
But bad choices that ended up as better choices
Quitting my job to write a book seemed like a crazy thing to do. Worked out okay in the end.
A long time ago, back before 1982, I decided to be a Dallas/SF fan in footaball, a Montreal fan in Hockey and a Boston Fan in baseball, and a Williams Fan in F1 racing....
I never expected the Red Sox to ever win the World Series, let alone two in my lifetime....
Yes. This is true.
Also, I would say that back then, putting it all out there in a silly podcast about Formula One seemed like the worst idea ever. That might have worked out okay too.
That is a rather dramatic move
Hey Christine, did you and Mr. C ever manage to play around with Google Drive yet? I have sent three vids your way.....
Hehe, it wasn't quite as simple as all that, but it sounds good :)
As a headline to the story, it does that :)
To be honest, no! I saw an email about the Bangles or something, figured it wasn't to me :)
Who is planning to get up at crazy o'clock for F1 next week?
I didn't know there was a hangout today. I made a decision to check sidepodcast out now. Hopefully this turns out to be a good decision
Me
Me. When is it?
How crazy is it?
Qualifying 6am, Race 7am.
That's nothing :)
UK times
Practice 1 Fri 02:00
Practice 2 Fri 06:00
Practice 3 Sat 03:00
Qualifying Sat 06:00
Race Sun 07:00
In fact a lie in.
Easy, but maybe not FP1+3.
Hello. I think I'm similar to Mark in that all my work/studying/moving decisions have all turned out pants.
On the plus side, I took a gamble on applying for a Paralympics ticket and ended up with a great seat in the stadium on the best night of the Games, that was pretty cool.
Yeah, well I would like the results of this experiment of sending video via Google Drive to answer about a question posed by a Sidepodhangout about uncertain decisions that I have made in the past.... :P
Talk about closing the loop there!
I might watch it in bed.
Important question: Is it on the Beeb?
Nope. It's one on, one off till the end of the season.
The other day I needed to go out to lunch and I was really hungry so I was about to go out. Somebody said, "ooh Alex just before you go out can you help me with this thing". Against my better judgement and my tummy I said OK. It then immediately poured with rain for an hour, by the time I was done with helping the person it was sunny again and there was a rainbow :)
Who is planning to get up at crazy o'clock for F1 next week?
It it Suzuka, so I have to stay up until 2 am for it to start. But is a decent track, so it is a certain decision that it will have good racing...
This sounds like a Teletubbies script
Not to worry - sure there's another way to watch it ;)
Eh Oh
That's karma that is :)
It probably was :)
Qualifying 6am, Race 7am.
That's nothing :)
Wimps! That's what time all the European races come on on the American East coast!
I had an Indian takeaway on Friday night and I tried one of their specialities, no idea what it was going to be like, and it was much nicer than the thing I was going to order before I saw the menu.
Ooh, yum, what was it?
My friend has a theory that he says has served him very well, he always orders the longest thing on the menu. It means he tries lots of new things.
Mr C made a decision to tip his favourite Strictly dancer. That didn't work out well
http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/19770277
This is specifically at Indian restaurants
Longest, as in the name?
Is that the longest name or the longest thing like spaghetti?
Points for Christine
Longest name. He can never remember if it's supposed to be most words or most letters.
Aaaaawwwwwww! Mr. C and Christine where made for each other! Jinxing others is just the icing on the cake....!
:^P
I was going to have a lamb bhuna, but ended up with chicken with tomato and ginger and peppers, and a samosa instead of a naan.
That sounds like fun, you never know what you're going to get!
Sounds good. I think I'm hungry.
I've got bread baking, all this talk, and smell of food is driving me crazy!
Ooh I found it. Specialities of the house, number 25. www.exmouth-takea…-takeaway/saffron
On the event I was dreading front...
When I was nowt but a lad, knee high to a grasshopper (or 16). The internet was on the new side (1996 for those keeping track). I had been talking to a few people about music that I liked on the NME chat board. Beck, one of my favourite musicians was coming to gig at the Brixton Academy, I wanted to go, and so were a lot of the people on this board.
I was terrified, but also excited, but was worried the whole thing might go terribly wrong. The internet was much more of a frightening thing in those days (not to say it isn't now, but NOBODY met people from the internet).
Not only did I go to my first gig, but I also met my first people from the internet, both of which were life long habits that I have continued to enjoy enormously.
The first person I ever met in real life from the internet was my mate Kris, who I still speak to every day and see all the time, and he is the chap who orders the longest thing on the Indian menu (in words or letters not length of dish).
Also his partner worked with Katherine, and his partner set Katherine and I up...
So while I was nervous to go, and I was very scared, it did turn out to be one of the best decisions of my life.
Well, we can't beat a story like that!
Does that mean Alex wins this week's Hangout?
Crikey, that's good.
Unless someone has something better but I am not sure what that would be
Sorry about that...
Maybe I should have waited until the last few minutes of the Hangout?
Now somebody might catch me on the Underbite / Overbite / Undercut whatever...
What is up fellows.
Considering I was terrified about moving down to Huddersfield, three weeks in it seems like a great decision. Doesn't exactly top Alex, but hey, a little something thats ongoing for me now.
Excellent! 3 weeks in a good yardstick in my estimation. Great that it's going well :)
3 weeks in was when I decided in my head that I'd made a mistake going to university and that I should leave. 6 months in I decided to actually do something about it!
Need to get properly into my course still... but Hudds is a lovely little town and I've met some lovely people so far.
I am glad the move is going well for you. I remember Lou going through this same thing a couple of years ago. Looks like both of you made good moves
Great that it's going well
Pretty much the same here, but then I made the error of trying again the following year and that didn't work either! But you have to try these things or you'll never know.
Meeting different people from different places and different backgrounds will probably teach you more than any course will. That doesn't mean you should take it easy work wise
Hey snap I did the same thing!
Exactly. Quick what's 7424 divided by 132?
(What are you studying again? It's not Maths is it?)
56.24242424
He is studying journalism not maths
I think you are supposed to show all workings Mr Roy :)
Heheh :)
howdy everyone, i can't think of any, but i'm sure there are times where i've not wanted to do something.. or made a jump i wasn't sure about and that its worked out okay...
I wasn't sure about uni, and two years down the line it's the best decision i've ever made.. that probably counts :)
Open excel
Type =7424/132
Answer
When I was nowt but a lad... (here he goes - you know he's changed since he's become a father ;) )...
*ahem*
I had a great Stats teacher at school who at the beginning of each double Maths class on a Friday afternoon would start with a clipping from that weeks newspaper with a piece of wrongly used statistics in a news report. Before introducing the first of these in the first class he mentioned this stat, apparently there is an exact correlation between the number of suicides in Helsinki and the number of Fridges sold by a Comet in Croydon (and the statistic had been accurate for the last 6 years at the time).
But of course Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc...
Damon Hill thinks Lewis Hamilton made a good decision but then he turned down McLaren to go to Arrows so what does he know
www.dailymail.co.…ito=feeds-newsxml
You wouldn't get very far on Countdown with that attitude ;)
I've seen people using the defence that Mercedes has won the constructors championship more recently than McLaren as if that counts for anything (the championship itself and also it was a total blip for that team).
How long does the hangout go on for?
:D
Three hours. We're open till 6.
I can't remember ever having to divide by 132 on countdown or having to end up with 56.24242424.
Cool... I was supposed to be catching up on blogging this afternoon, so I might need to multitask, but I don't want to pop off for a second and find all my pals gone!
Mercedes performance ever since it was BAR is no reason to sign for them. I can only assume the Lauda appointment is an indication of change in the structure of the team that convinced Lewis to sign
But they have not. They where called Brawn back then! And if you can transfer championships between origanzations like that, you might as well call then Honda as oppsed to Mercedes....
Honda spent a fortune developing that car so they at least deserve som credit
I'm so happy to hear you're enjoying uni and love the town you're living in. By the end of first semester you'll wonder how you coped without uni and your course :)
Shredding paper is quite therapeutic.
until you accidently put too much in and get it all stuck..
in my experience :D
I don't see where Lauda fits in to their structure.
Yes there is that. And it gets overheated and stops working for an hour so you have to go quite slowly.
ah the complexities of shredding :)
I guess Lewis is looking at the team's performance from back when they were called "Matra".... :P
Lukeh is playing on his 3DS (which is so strange!!) and i'm procrastinating from doing a project proposal.. cause they are long and i don't want to accept year 3 is beginning!
What is everyone else up to this afternoon?
I don't understand it either. Non-exec chairman is an odd position for him to have in what is effectively a wholly owned subsidiary of Daimler-Benz. I don't understand giving him a non-executive position at all but I have to assume it is the first step on a pre-planned path that Hamilton is aware of
i have just 1 question regarding the Lewis move.. how on earth do we tell the two drivers apart now, they'll both have yellow helmets.
They did OK as Tyrrell for a while
I was going to do some blogging as I've got about 18 posts in a queue but blogging is hard, so I decided to attack a huge pile of paperwork and old magazines. Turns out I've got untouched/unopened Autosports going back to March.
Also I should visit the parents at some stage but I can't be bothered to go outside.
Lewis may switch to the silver one he wore in Singapore.
but it wont be a visual tribute to Senna.. how will he cope?!
Well having finished reading the Beano: http://t.co/4PpWM9Tw
And supervising Nina's drawing from earlier: http://t.co/LwIMWj26
I did make an Animal version of the Daily Mail website side rail: http://t.co/64Cf4Zlk as my creative thing for the day, but then I realised that I needed to write 5 blog posts today.
So far I have done 2.
Wow... can't believe I'm actually awake for one of these! How is everyone?
Moving to a worse team is something Senna never did. He had a habit of breaking contracts to get into a better car
Ooh, she's arty like you :)
Hello, welcome, come on in!
I seem to recall Senna being a Williams driver at one point.....
:)
The Beano hasn't been shut down yet? I thought that was imminent
The Dandy is going to be shut down.
I subscribe to both, their solution to shutting down the Dandy is to give me another subscription to the Beano! How's that supposed to work?
That's what I get for being a yankee, right?
Welcome Chris, pull up a chair
I dunno... Nico's is more of a neon greenish-yellow to match the t-bar above his cockpit. Hamilton's is pretty yellow.
The Beano says proudly on it's header that it is the worlds most popular comic. So I guess it must be selling more than Batman? Although that seems hard to believe.
The Williams was a good car. They had won the previous two titles where McLaren had been nowhere. In all probability Senna would have won the 94 title. Despite having a crooked car Schumacher had to take out Hill in Adelaide to win the title and Senna would have scored a lot more points than Hill
I heard a thing on the radio a couple of weeks ago that DC Thompson were discussing closing the Beano and Dandy down because they were only selling 8000 copies. I think Batman and other comic books must sell more than that
I think it was just the Dandy
I was obviously concentrating more on my driving that the radio
Perhaps they would have been able to afford to keep it if they hadn't "diversified" into Friends Reunited (DC Thomson) that is.
3rd blog post written... 2 more to go...
I'll actually get a better response if I post this here... Here's my upcoming blog post for 10th October...
Or maybe not :)
Hi all
Been to see my newborn niece. And coincidentally, went for a meal in Huddersfield.
We now have 2 nieces with the same name, which will make it confusing at Christmas time.
Are they on opposite arms of the family so to speak?
I don't think Hill was a great driver and certainly not close to being as good as Senna. Had Senna lived he would have put a lot more pressure on Schumacher. The car needed a few races to get sorted out and then Senna would have done even better than Hill did and on many occasions Hill would have been between Senna and Schumacher.
Did we ever find out who Christine predicted for Singapore?
Was it Lewis or Schumi?
Yep! I've wear nail varnish all the time (just a glimpse at my twitter will tell you that). However I've only ever warn a tie at school during the 2 years they insisted on it. We were allowed to wear clear nail varnish at school then, so if clear nail varnish counts then yes ive warn both at the same time. :)
She refused to say but it has to have been Hamilton
Yes, my Wife's side of the family.
Yes, probably not at the same time. I used to think it was rubbish that we had to wear a tie to school, but now I quite like that I know how to tie one.
I mean the newest addition is on her side, not both on one side.
I seem to remember her withholding it...
Aha! A both at the same time person! Excellent :)
It's a handy knack. I can tie a tie 2 different ways, but I can't really tie a bow tie without looking it up.
i wish i could remember how to tie a tie, i tried the other day and it was a failure!
there is more than 1 way to tie a tie??
Half-windsor, full-windsor, four-in-hand are the ones I know.
My guess would be to first consult the list of retirements.... :P
I wish I could remember also. Which is awkward as I wear one at work.
Ties yes at various office jobs, but not at school because I hate them and they had an option where if you wore a sweatshirt you didn't have to wear a tie. It meant I got quite hot sometimes.
I never understood making kids wear ties. I seem to remember writing a post for a long deceased website comparing school ties to F1 safety. It was about how things are considered acceptable if they have been around long enough. Imagine if ties were a new fashion and you had to pitch to the authorities a plan for children to wear very strong cloth in a slip knot round their necks.
And obviously at weddings etc
There are loads of different knots
:D
only you Steven...
Some schools are (sensibly) going to clip-ons - not just for the obvious, but because kids can't wear clip-on ties badly ;)
I was simply making the point that lots of things are accepted in F1 because "they have always been there". I seem to remember it being called something like "It is time for F1 to get rid of the old school tie" but I could be very wrong. I wonder if I still have a copy somewhere. It would be interesting to see if any of the changes I wanted have been made
my school has pieces of elastic with ties on for the younger children to wear. I think clip ons would have been better.
Well drivers don't wear ties anymore :)
So much bullying potential with one of those boingy things round your neck
:D
A tie yes. Many times, mostly in uniform. Hate wearing a tie. Is there any neck worn medal that allows you to take off the tie and wear it as an option instead? I will volunteer for those missions....
Nail varnish? No. Nail Polish remover - sadly yes, on my fingers while trying to get rid of the super-glue that bonded my fingers together....
Long story......
I have never understood the logic of making kids wear any kind of tie. It is an entirely unsuitable garment? accoutrement? for them. I am sure there is a better word. Accessory?
Well it protects your expensive shirt with your cheap tie. That was the point of ties in the beginning.
I am not sure that was one of the improvements on my list. The last driver to wear one must have been Mike Hawthorn who retired after winning the title in 1958. He always raced in a bow tie. He retired because racing was too dangerous and was killed on the Guildford bypass in January 1959
I drive over that road every so often and think of him each time.
bow ties are cool.
#lukeh
... Just a cheap way to add school colours to a variety of different other uniform clothing items?
And house colours which is what I had at school
Because I went to Hogwarts
**Fezes are cool
I drive that road every single time i drive to/ from Farnham. There is still gap in the trees at the spot which is easy to see during winter.
On the topic of Hawthorn, I went to his grave last year, people maintain it so well, always flowers there.
:D :D
And that is a shame! What made Mike Hawthorn famous was his bow-tie. Not that he was the first British WDC winner....
Odd way for a racing driver to dress though i.telegraph.co.uk…horn_1504594c.jpg
Not sure Lukeh will want to wear a bow tie regularly
All the drivers should start wearing bow ties - the spin-y ones. #aero
twas Lukeh that left the comment, he says it's very stylish...
And the first British world championship race winner
Will^ I'm not sure I recognise your name, but your... Fez is familiar.
:) As my name suggests, I do like a good hat
The closest you are going to get to that now are turbo visors in karting to deal with rain
www.xcitingclub.e…5_turbovisor2.jpg
They will once they figure out a way of using it as a generator for the energy to be stored in the KERS...
That's great - I'm now imagining it on an F1 driver at the end on the main straight at Monza.
Surely just a case of mounting it on a generator, and attached to a battery/capacitor - like normal.
It would make getting out of the car a lot more difficult when someone is screaming in your ear not to touch the car and ground simultaneously. Oh and disengage bow tie in mid air between car and ground
Not quite what I meant. Looking at it from the point of view of the engineer. The Drivers' stupid head is in the way blocking the tie from spinning.... We need to remove the driver's head from his shouldrs to get the bow-tie spinning...
Then we get into a whole lot of other headaches....:^P
Otherwise, I am sure Newey would have pulled this off by now.....
Managed to sort the big pile of paper, and had a quick flick through some of those old Autosports. Is there an easy way to switch to the digital version and is it cheaper?
... Some people might suggest that one or two drivers this year have already lost their heads.
The bow tie could be used as a turbo-charger to feed more air into the engine. All it would need is some ducting up the side of the helmet
Yes, but those drivers are currently racing in Indycar....We had to make way for Senna.... :P
Texas has an 85mph speed limit. That has to be a good decision. Although I would love to know why American speed limits always end in 5 rather than 0. I suppose we should be grateful that NASA don't set speed limits or they would end in 1
jalopnik.com/5941…t-isnt-a-big-deal
I would not like that.
In Texas, what is there to hit?
Looks like there is a digital + web option which is cheaper than what I'm on now, but I think I'll have to call them..
The problem is they all have guns there . I am sure Montana still has some unlimited roads
I like France's 80 (130km/h) limit, it would be good to have that in places here. About time roads limits were set on merit not blanket restrictions.. there are places I'd like it lowered too.
Would be great fun to unleash something down one of those.
The bow tie could be used as a turbo-charger to feed more air into the engine. All it would need is some ducting up the side of the helmet
True. But we still need a way to keep the bow-tie turbine spinning. The blades would be shacking either the chin or helmut of the driver so unless we cover over the tie over, and in which case, nobody can tell that is its just a spinning bow tie or we leave it exposed and hope the driver can withstand it.
Maldie crashes into walls far to often as it is....
Sounds like Texans treat motorway limits like Brits do :)
"It's the ones in lifted Tundras who think they're A.J. Foyt when they're really as high as A.J. Allmendinger."
:) :)
Lunch is calling me. Bye everyone!
You put the bow tie on a shaft that sits 3 inches ahead of the driver's chin. With the correct ducting you should still be able to see it from head on
Great quote
@Christine Have you &/or MrC managed to find a minute to listen to the thing I sent you?
Absolutely! sidepodcast.com/p…cy-mashup-content
You mean this
sidepodcast.com/p…cy-mashup-content
Damn she beat me again
Completely missed that post - my Lt needs examining it seems.
Quick Q - are there any updated plans for NFL threads?
I don't think there we've made plans either way. It's up to you guys what you think is best.
Anybody got plans for the rest of the day? Maybe some future decisions to take? :)
I'm having a bit of food then heading off to visit parents. When I get back I may do one of those blog posts, unsure which one. I re-started my film reviews and I've got another to do so perhaps that.
I am also blogging... seems like the most popular Sunday afternoon activity!
Potential for film-watching, although Mr C has his code-head on so it depends if I can snap him out of it or not :)
Better than a flu-head!
A film would be good, quite tempted to stay and watch one but I ought to go..
Very true! We're about 90% healthy now, just some lingering sniffles, I think.
Look forward to reading your reviews :)
Cor, 6pm has crept up on me as well!
Great commenting again, ladies and gents.
Glad you are both feeling better and that you survived Mr C's nursing
Shall I send you a quick post for some NFL?
Oh that's good. Rest and blogging is a good way back to health. I had a slight headache/sniffles thing in the week and I was worried I'd caught what you had!
So far I've done Cowboys & Aliens which I just about remembered from a while back, and Dredd from the other week. Total Recall to write up.
Please do
I think the threads should stay the same but we should try and get as many people as possible together for one game per week
So on the subject of this post, how is going to Montreal and New York next year to see the Grand prix?
They are spoileriffic though.
Good to be around for one for a change, cheers for the space.
