Sidepodcamp Week 1, Part 1 // Sidepodcast Summer Camp 2013

Published by Christine Blachford

It's arrived at last, the very first Sidepodcast Summer Camp. What started as a vague passing idea has now become a living, breathing virtual camp. We've got a fortnight of fun and games ahead, but it all starts here. This (and subsequent) event threads will be the base of the camp, and you can follow the Factbyte Factbox for updates and guidance along the way. Come on in, as they say, the virtual water is lovely!

As it happened: Sidepodcamp Week 1

  • 07:02

Hello everyone! Welcome along to the first ever Sidepodcast Summer Camp! We're here to fill part of the Formula One summer break with a fortnight of vaguely related fun and games.

  • 07:02

You may have seen the schedule I published a while back in preparation for this fabulous event. It's here: http://t.co/WsR6cQ306x (like all good schedules, it's subject to change).

  • 07:02

So today is the Camp Check-In, which is all about arriving, picking your cabins and roommates, registering any allergies you might have, and unpacking.

  • 07:03

There are two tasks on the agenda today: one is to find out who is joining us for camp, and the other is to decide what kind of camp it is!

  • 07:04

The first thing to do is introduce yourself, even if you're a regular visitor to Sidepodcast. There may be new campers visiting and they need to find out who we all are! I've been looking at some icebreaker type games and boy, there are a variety of things out there. Some better than others!

  • 07:04

I like the idea of People Bingo: http://adulted.about.com/od/icebreakers/qt/peoplebingo.htm What things would we need for F1 fans?

"Has a piece of team merchandise?"

    "Has been to a race?"

  • 07:05

The other thing we need to do is make sure we have the right layout for our camp. Do we have a lake? Do we need one? There's got to be a go-kart track, that makes a lot of sense. Perhaps a mechanics shed alongside for the tinkerers of the group.

  • 07:05

Talking of tinkerers, Mr C has been banished to a groundskeepers lodge apart from everyone else. He has been making fun of my camp idea from the get-go, so this is his punishment. However, I have the idea that the he'll have a lodge with mowers and rakes and groundskeeper stuff, but then he'll press a button, a fake wall will move, and there'll be bright lights and heaps of monitor screens and technology. You know the type.

  • 07:06

I heard talk yesterday of whether there will be shops, restaurants and hotels at this camp. I don't know if we'd go that far, but I definitely know I'm not staying in a tent. We know how that works out! Has anyone been to a summer camp before? How do people feel about regular camping? I'm voting for walls, electricity, water, not too far from civilisation. Kind of like home!

  • 07:07

So introduce yourself, have a think about where you are, make some suggestions, consult the maps, and we'll get this camp underway!

  • 10:30

Get to know your fellow campers by playing F1 People Bingo! How many do you score? http://twitter.com/sidepodcast/status/364317009162424320/photo/1

  • 19:17

For anyone struggling to find the location of the camp, Mr C has whipped up a flag. Or as he puts it: "couldn't find the flag, but found the pole and someone's spare bed sheet. good news is, you can't miss us. bad news is, you may be in for a chilly evening."

  • 20:15

So, I have done the maths and it seems as though the average score for our F1 People Bingo is... drum roll, please... 18! That is not bad at all!

  • 20:45

A round up of the action so far on Day 1 - a newsletter! http://twitter.com/sidepodcast/status/364472012506279937/photo/1

  • 07:13

Good morning campers, or as I think it would only be fitting to say: Hi de hi!

  • 07:14

Hope everyone had a restful evening because there's lots of work in store for you today.

  • 07:16

Now you're all settled in, it's time for some camp basics, and we need to decide on the following:

    • Logo
    • Flag
    • Slogan
    • Theme tune
    • T-shirts
    • Ground rules
  • 07:19

I know there has been some work on the theme tune already, the results of the M*A*S*H style collaboration have been posted courtesy of Jordan: http://sidepodcast.com/snippet/sidepodcast-painless-sung-theme-mash-suicide-painless-sidepodcast-summer-camp-theme-tune

  • 07:20

We've also started work on the ground rules. So far we have this: No loitering.

  • 07:20

And Mr C wanted us to keep off the grass, but after the planes, trains and automobiles all took to the run off areas to slow to a halt and drop off their passengers yesterday, it may already be too late to save the greenery.

  • 12:34

We also need to decide what film to watch for Sidepodfilmclub at the weekend. Going by what is available on iTunes, there is Grand Prix (which Jordan has been requesting forever but is quite long), Driven (shorter but apparently rubbish?) and tangentially Iron Man 2 (because of Monaco, baby!)

I did try looking for decent summer camp films but wasn't inspired.

  • 19:20

The Italian JobOkay, for those who are wishing to participate in the Sidepodfilmclub this Saturday, the chosen film is The Italian Job. That's the original 1960s version, with Michael Caine having some door trouble, rather than the less-successful remake.

Thanks to the suggestion by Lou. I've not seen it but I've only ever heard good things about it, so I can't wait!

Make sure to grab your copy today. There is a rental version available on iTunes if that's your chosen distribution method. Other options are always available.

  • 19:22

Time to introduce another activity to the camp, I think. This is what I have rather uninspiringly labelled The Alphabet Game. Because... it features an alphabet.

  • 19:22

Sidepodcamp A to ZThe idea is that, if there was to be an A to Z guide of Formula One, what items do you think would be best representing each letter.

For example, should it be Alonso or Adelaide? Or perhaps Australia as a whole? Or maybe even Arrows!?

  • 21:39

Here's your most bodacious newsletter update for the second day of camp: http://twitter.com/sidepodcast/status/364848204711329792/photo/1

  • 07:20

Good morning campers, rise and shine! How are we all? Missing home yet?

  • 07:21

Today is a bit of an easier morning, building towards the first Round the Campfire evening. Thinking, music, marshmallows, ghost stories, you know the drill.

  • 18:35

The Campfire is go via Wavelength - a social listening playlist thing: http://wavelength.fm/Sidepodcampfire

  • 19:38

I do need to announce a slight change to the itinerary. Hopefully there will be a live show on Friday, so the first part of the Quiz is being brought forward to Thursday, that's tomorrow. Woohoo quiz!

  • 21:33

Newsletter for the third day, where things get a bit fiery! http://twitter.com/sidepodcast/status/365208851508772864/photo/1

  • Okay! Here we go, Sidepodcamp is here!

This is all very early, but I wanted to get it up and running before I disappear for the day.

    The gates are now open!

  • *drops bags off in Reception*

    Bah, I'm always early... :)

  • *drops bags off in Reception*

    Yay! Welcome!

We've set up the first aid room just for you :)

    Phew!

Bagsy in goals for camp football.

    :)

  • Morning all.

*stretches after long journey* - I managed to get through 2 whole episodes of F1Minute.

  • Hi Mr Will, welcome along.

I've added some F1 People Bingo to the FBFB.

  • I've added some F1 People Bingo to the FBFB.

    BINGO!

Quite a few missing though but it was good ol' Rubens move to Indy Car that got a line :)

Also that confirms my suspicions I suck at predicting races

  • Hi. Stopped en route for a coffee break. Took my time. Light traffic on the autobahn for a Monday.

Just done the F1 People Bingo. 12/25 - halfway along my F1 journey. Still much to do. (sounds like my school report from the 1970s)

  • LINE (18/25) Should've done better...

  • Hey everyone! Here is my F1 People Bingo.. I'm gonna claim my support for Ant as following someone out of F1.. That kinda counts.. right? ;)

    http://twitpic.com/d6m8by

I'm in favour of no actual tents, am a similar fan to them as you Christine, and I think we should defo have a lake, just in case it gets too hot.. or we fancy playing tribute to the teams Canadian GP antics... www.youtube.com/w…tch?v=BAyIKuqSSsY

    Looking forward to camp :)

  • Sorry, took a wrong turn and ended up in Queensland.

I ticked off all bingo boxes. Does that mean I'm allowed in?

  • Talking of tinkerers, Mr C has been banished to a groundskeepers lodge apart from everyone else.

    keep off the grass!

  • Also that confirms my suspicions I suck at predicting races

Vettel will win. That's gonna get at least one race right to the end of the year.

  • Vettel will win. That's gonna get at least one race right to the end of the year.

I didn't count Vettel as that's too easy to predict ;)

  • keep off the grass!

I'll stick to the gravel trap.

  • Hello one and all!

Checking in to the virtual camp while I'm in a bit of a real tropical one myself! :D But you'll see more of me tomorrow. :)

I'm Journeyer, by the way. 20/25 for me in People Bingo.

  • *long range Greyhound style bus pulls up at main road. Pzzzz-hssssss. Steps off, looking confused*

Um, is this the right place.

  • Definitely needs walls & room/building names. I was thinking buildings after teams, rooms after drivers. Mansell's room in the McLaren building can be a broom cupboard.

  • Um, is this the right place.

That or we're all in the wrong place :)

  • Definitely needs walls & room/building names. I was thinking buildings after teams, rooms after drivers. Mansell's room in the McLaren building can be a broom cupboard.

Who wants to come stay in the Barrichello Barn?

  • hello f1 fans,

got about 19 on the f1 people bingo, don't think ive ever bought from a company because they are f1 sponsors, but I have stopped drinking red bull...... so maybe my dislike of them (except webber) has had a reverse effect on me purchasing their product.

not much of a game player these days but I have spent many, many hours of my youth on the old pitstop 2, huge battles with epyx robodriver.

if we as f1 fans cant hum the tunes to the german or italian national anthems, we never will.

never been to a test or an f1 factory or sat in an f1 car, and I have never subscribed to an f1 magazine, surprisingly.

  • Who wants to come stay in the Barrichello Barn?

Least sleep, most fun I suspect. I'm in.

  • Hello arriving people! Love the idea of rooms named after people.

  • Sorry about the wheel ruts in the grass everyone, had to land the plane somewhere - long flight over the ocean and all that....

    {mr. C's gonna kill me.....}

  • if we as f1 fans cant hum the tunes to the german or italian national anthems, we never will.

    Very good point :)

  • {mr. C's gonna kill me.....}

Ha, that's the complete opposite of keeping off the grass!

  • Ha, that's the complete opposite of keeping off the grass!

i want words with that bus driver too!

  • Who wants to come stay in the Barrichello Barn?

Is that inside the Schumacher Ranch? :D

  • I make my Bingo score 18. I think, I think, I've been on a Sidepodcast show :)

  • Is that inside the Schumacher Ranch? :D

    Just behind it ;)

  • Just behind it ;)

    Ooh, harsh! :)

  • Ooh, harsh! :)

Yeah but next to the Eddie Irvine Bar.

  • i want words with that bus driver too!

typically I think we're still waiting for the trulli train to arrive with more people, it's slow as always.

  • typically I think we're still waiting for the trulli train to arrive with more people, it's slow as always.

But it might arrive with wine :)

  • Just behind it ;)

Hahaha! Sounds about right. :D #sorryLukeh

  • *Telephone call*

Hi all. I am lost. I can't find the camp owing to Mr C fixing my sat nav the last time we met. I don't think I will arrive before 9pm. Have now given up on the sat nav and am using the Force to guide me. It worked once in Munich.

Lukeh stay away from goals. If you think one arm in plaster is inconvenient adding a second will kill your typing speed and dent your nose.

    Enjoy your day all

    #nothere

  • Yeah but next to the Eddie Irvine Bar.

I see the BAR bar disappeared years ago.

  • The name's Jordan f1, by the way got two Bingo's - a row and a column I will just take a walk around and see which cabin I like.

    http://twitpic.com/d6mm55

BTW, if the beds are military style bunk beds - I have dibs on a bottom bunk!

  • Hahaha! Sounds about right. :D #sorryLukeh

    Bah! :)

  • I see the BAR bar disappeared years ago.

Yeah, the old barman Jacques kept changing the decor and wasted all the money.

  • Based on the recent evidence, the canteen should be named after Grosjean.<?blockquote>

It's "Grosjean's Mess" in more ways than one...... ;P

  • No overtaking in the queues, though

You have to worry if you are first in line!

  • Alright everyone remember that for the archery range, the orange ARROWS are for training safety. They will hold true for about 95% od the distance of the range, then fall shot of the mark. Pretty handle for learning to draw and aim the arrows.

The Silver Arrows are powerful enough not only to get to the target, but if you miss the target with either the crossbows or longbows the Silver Arrows will go though the wall of the groundkeeper's lodge like a hot knife though butter....

I blame Steven for setting up the groundkeepers lodge downrange of the archery line....

If you choose the red arrows everyone gets 9 except Christine who for mysterious reasons only ever gets 8

  • If you choose the red arrows everyone gets 9 except Christine who for mysterious reasons only ever gets 8

    Hehehe!

  • *Second phone call*

Hi all I am still looking for the camp. I can now rule out that it is west of where I started as I have reached the sea in that direction. When I say I reached the sea I mean my car is slightly in the sea. I can still see the roof and I am sure the tow truck will be able to recover it in time for me to continue my journey.

It would be really useful if there was a sidepodflag on a tall pole in the middle of the camp to give me something to aim at. If Mr C could rig up a Bat signal that would help to.

Cancel my dinner reservation at Café Grosjean but book me in for a camp fire supper.

  • If you choose the red arrows everyone gets 9 except Christine who for mysterious reasons only ever gets 8

So much for trying to make the archery range F1-related.....

Anyway, I am shocked to hear that The Red Arrows only have 9 aircraft. I thought that they would have a couple of spares with them that they fly to the air shows.

  • It would be really useful if there was a sidepodflag on a tall pole in the middle of the camp to give me something to aim at. If Mr C could rig up a Bat signal that would help to.

a flag you say? we might have a flag somewhere.

*toddles off west in direction of lodge*

  • couldn't find the flag, but found the pole and someone's spare bed sheet.

  • Has anyone ever done those hideous icebreaker things, like the trust game where you fall backwards and hope that someone catches you?

  • Has anyone ever done those hideous icebreaker things, like the trust game where you fall backwards and hope that someone catches you?

They're no fun at all. I did one of them today.

I say did one, my boss dropped a box on my arm and I trusted that he wouldn't. Yeah... that wasn't great.

    Now you mention it... :)

The falling in the arms one is scary. It's not that I don't trust them, I'm just worried they misunderestimate how strong they are!

  • Hello.

I like the look of these log cabins, this is much better than a tent.

I have no idea what I'm doing, so things are perfectly normal.

    I scored 17 in the bingo: twitter.com/toomu…405266946/photo/1

I wear F1 t-shirts (but not proper shirts) from time to time but I'm not sure I'd class where I wear them as 'functions'. I've started many careers in F1 games but never ever finished one. :) I can't remember if I missed any important events due to F1, which makes me think they can't have been too important - I've definitely cancelled and rescheduled things in the past.. with the advent of proper timeshifting instead of crummy VHS I'm not sure I'd do that now. I also used to have F1 desktop wallpapers but I don't now. (but I counted it anyway). I don't remember buying anything just because they sponsor F1.. but I might be wrong.

  • I don't remember buying anything just because they sponsor F1.. but I might be wrong.

The last tyre I got was a Pirelli and I wished it wasn't! I don't think that counts :)

We got a free one of them at the Badger Bash. It's not bad!

My main sponsorship purchases come in the form of alcohol 'recommendations' that are printed on cars ;)

Did you not get to choose? Or did it turn out to be as bad as the F1 tyres? :)

  • Just today I bought a Sure deodorant, only because it was in the black & gold of Lotus :)

Oh yeah I got one of those as well, even before I got a free one at the Badger Bash. It's a heck of a lot better than the official F1 deodorant you can get in Tesco.

  • Did you not get to choose? Or did it turn out to be as bad as the F1 tyres? :)

I forgot to choose, so that's what they went with. So far it hasn't been too bad, but I haven't reached 300kph yet :)

    <3 amazing.

  • I've found an example map of a summer camp location, ours could look something like that.

Hadn't thought of tennis courts, but they're always useful. As long as they come with ball people.

I'm curious where the tunnel at the bottom goes to, it doesn't seem to have an exit.

  • So today is the Camp Check-In, which is all about arriving, picking your cabins

I expect I'll be peeping through the crack in the cabin curtains at all the exciting events going on outside.

  • PS - Hi Steven

  • I do hope that wasn't the Force of the India variety, they are not brilliant at giving Scottish drivers what they want.

The Force was a trick I picked up from a friend years ago. We had driven to Munich and I was trying to navigate us to the hotel. After we passed the station for the third time he took the map off me and through it in the back. Forget the map and use the Force he said. A minute later we pulled up outside the hotel.

    Force > maps

Careful, guys remember that Christine has specifically quested that there be no forest fires, (well at least not unit my aircraft is warmed-up and ready for its take-off roll....)

Lassies, its a tandem two-seater, so the first lass who can get into the rear seat gets a free flight out of any possible forest fire...

And I am sure with a forest fire in camp, mr. C will have other things to worry about beside the grass...

  • Also, some more possible ground rules:

If anyone trips or falls or an accident occurs, yellow flags will fly around the camp. Try and slow down during these periods to make sure you stay safe too.

No speeding in the tuck shop, take your time to consider the yummy fruit and sweets to fuel up on for the day and watch out for anyone else around you.

The park down by the river, Park Ferme, must be covered overnight and stay pristine at all times

If you need an update on the days events, live timing screens around camp should give you an update on what's to come

  • No speeding in the tuck shop, take your time to consider the yummy fruit and sweets to fuel up on for the day and watch out for anyone else around you.

If caught speeding, you'll have to go to the back of the longest line (with apologies for using a NASCAR rule).

  • Proposed rule

No Lurkers. If you are watching the sidepodcast camp you are in the sidepodcast camp. What better place to de-lurk and meet everyone than round the campfire before it burns out of control and we need to call in the Heikki Kovalainen Camp Fire Brigade?

We will even share marshmallows and beer with you. If you don't de-lurk for this you will probably never jump in and join the conversation.

    Film Suggestions:

    - Grand Prix (I agree with Jordan - this is a must-watch)

    - Weekend of a Champion (not sure if it's on iTunes though?)

    - Asterix and Obelix (it's tangential, but so what?!)

Drive (although i'm guessing it's lack of family friendlyness is gonna mean it's a no..)

    Thor... cause.... Chris Helmsworth...

or some 'cary' ones should be:

a Herbie film, just well.. cause :)

Regazzoni was an old school driver in all ways. In the days when there was a proper border between his native Switzerland and Italy he had a unique way of dealing with it. Everyone else stopped and waited for clearance and permission to enter Italy. When he was on his way to Maranello he used to lock up 4 wheels on his company Ferrari and slide to a halt. He stuck his head out the window and yelled "Regazzoni - Ferrari" then spun the wheels and took off without waiting for the border guard to speak. Imagine if Lewis Hamilton dod something like that now

Take the golf buggy. It's more or less OK but you have to bend your neck at a funny angle because of the dent in the roof

this thing is crying out for a kers unit and an aero rethink.

wonder if newey fancies a summer holiday project...

  • There. I have finally dragged my plane beside the Log Cabin which I have named "Villa Villeneuve" House Rules:

    1) Make a wooden sign pointing to your home with the name of the community and its distance from here.

    2) Nail it to the sign that says "Watkins Glen Bog/Swamp Water Distillery" which points to the lean-to next door. The Still is at the back of the lean-to.

    3) Mind the Wheel Ruts and Beware of aircraft taxiing in and out of the lean-to at all times.

  • Will^ : Unlike last night, where I went back to my cabin and crashed, I'll remember to say byeee all.

Mr C : we need a rule about not drinking and driving the camp golf buggy!

Steven Roy: I only rolled it twice

Villa Villeneuve House Rule #4: Please ask which liquids are safe to drink at the Watkins Glen Bog/Swamp Water distillery. The reason the distillery currently exists is to manufacture the needed 50/50 Methanol to water mixture needed to shorten my take-off rolls.....

I always think the idea of marshmallows is greater than the reality. Haven't roasted one for a while though.

    Tequila

I always think the idea of marshmallows is greater than the reality. Haven't roasted one for a while though.

I think I only ever roasted them once in front of a fire and they were such a disappointment. After that I settled for eating them as they were and roasting my feet in front of the fire

  • As long as you didn't accidentally eat your feet.

  • So the plan for the campfire is really just talking about music, sharing songs - kumbayah or otherwise - you know, just musicy stuff.

Has anyone ever tried the social listening playlist type things? For example, this looks like fun: http://wavelength.fm/

Ooooh, niiiice! Haven't tried one before myself, but looks cool!

I think I'll be asleep during the campfire, but will the playlist be available to listen to after the event? :)

I don't really know how it all works but I'm sure we can keep track of what was listened to.

  • As long as you didn't accidentally eat your feet.

Didn't do that but I did stick a fork in one.

I have never heard of that. Looks like it could be interesting

    Christine: Alright!

Oh! I have never been involved in an intervention before.

  • After how shocking today has gone, I am quite happy to grab a cider, sit by the camp fire and sit with you lovely people tonight. :)

    It's not even Thursday yet!

Some rocking tunes coming up. Also, cider sounds good.

    It is indeed.

You could do a synchronised Aside with Joe listen and all comment in real-time.

  • Heikki Heikki Heikki Kovalainen - brilliant!

  • For those who haven't joined in yet, you have a single player for the whole room to which anyone in the room can add songs or videos to the playlist (via URL or upload). And a chatbox, which is why we're talking there to keep context. :)

  • It's very good

So this entire camp has just been a ruse to use some newsletter templates. Good ruse :)

A very professional looking newsletter. Slightly worrying picture though, it looks like the sidepodcamp has caught fire!

Perfect of those who have missed the action of the day, up until this point :D

  • A very professional looking newsletter. Slightly worrying picture though, it looks like the sidepodcamp has caught fire!

I know and that isn't meant to happen till next week. Rumour has it the camp is going to be burned to the ground to symbolise the end of this years camp like a sidepodcast version of a Viking longboat

didn't want anyone to risk food poisoning from undercooked mallows!

  • The last of the camp fire embers smoulder away to ash, while we're watching/listening to the dying throes of:

~ The Sky Sports 2013 halfway montage, and

~ "Les Toreadors" from Carmen Suite No. 1 by Georges Bizet, also known as the champagne music!

    A good night, well done.
