Rolex 24 at Daytona

Endurance racing at the Daytona International Speedway

Published by Christine Blachford

This year's race sees the Starworks Motorsport team on pole position, with a lineup that features endurance racing legend Allan McNish. Last year's winner, Chip Ganassi Racing were unable to qualify one of their cars and thus start from the back of the grid. With 24 hours and a 5.73 kilometre course in front of them, it's all to play for as the 50th anniversary of the race gets underway. Oh, and look out for bonus Patrick Dempsey somewhere in the field.

  • Marti 28/01/2012 at 17:57:52

    Hello everyone! :)

  • Pat W 28/01/2012 at 18:15:24

Hi all, and thanks to our gracious hosts for taking up the suggestion. :)

I'll be back in an hour or so, but here are a few preliminaries:

TV coverage starts up to an hour before the race.

    UK/Europe: MotorsTV full race; Eurosport 2 comes and goes;

    USA: SPEED / SPEED.com

    Australia: SPEED Australia

Radio Le Mans WILL have coverage this year, that's the feed MotorsTV will take!

This race is great for guest drivers and one-off entries from other places.

    Names:

    Allan McNish;

    Dario Franchitti, Scott Dixon, Juan Montoya and Jamie McMurray share a leading Ganassi entry;

IndyCar guys: aforementioned plus Rahal, Hunter-Reay, Wilson, Tracy, Max Papis.

    Ex-F1 interest: Fisichella in a GT Ferrari, and Montoya obviously;

Others: Travis Pastrana, Michael Waltrip, AJ Allmendinger, Olly Gavin, Jan Magnussen, Ricardo Zonta, Mike Rockenfeller, Lucas Luhr, Emmanuele Pirro and RG's man Rob Bell.

An unusually high level of yellows means unlike Le Mans this race often really is contested until last lap.

  • Marti 28/01/2012 at 18:23:48

Thanks for the info Pat, very useful :)

  • Barrie 28/01/2012 at 18:26:36

this will be my first dip into the Daytona 24....Motors TV will be a fixture this weekend I think!

plenty of coffee on hand :)

  • Marti 28/01/2012 at 18:27:10

plenty of coffee on hand :)

Will you watch the whole race, Barrie?

  • Mr C 28/01/2012 at 18:28:59

    cheers pat, hey marti.

quick heads-up from us... been doing some updates in the background since the last live event, so although things look the same, the code and database are a bit different. if anything breaks we'll sort it asap (likely by switching things off and on again).

  • Marti 28/01/2012 at 18:30:39

Surely it will be a huge test for the live comment system. I think that, for the F1 season, it could be useful to add a little widget on the sidebar linked to this page, because now it's hard to get here if you don't have the complete link :P

  • Mr C 28/01/2012 at 18:31:20

Surely it will be a huge test for the live comment system.

all testing is good testing :)

  • Christine 28/01/2012 at 18:32:53

I think that, for the F1 season, it could be useful to add a little widget on the sidebar linked to this page, because now it's hard to get here if you don't have the complete link :P

It's coming, but I made a last minute feature request that has delayed it.

  • Mr C 28/01/2012 at 18:43:12

eurosport 2 is available on the ipad for £2.99 (for 1 months subscription). has on and off coverage for the next 24hrs.

  • Pat W 28/01/2012 at 18:46:02

eurosport 2 is available on the ipad for £2.99 (for 1 months subscription). has on and off coverage for the next 24hrs.

That's likely how I'll watch, either there or my existing website subscription. iPad useful to clear up screen space.

  • Pat W 28/01/2012 at 18:46:47

Also racing: Brian Johnson of the band AC/DC. Yes, really! Car #50 in DP class.

  • Marti 28/01/2012 at 18:46:57

I think I'll be the main character of 'In the Persuit of Live-Streaming' saga... :P

  • Noelinho 28/01/2012 at 18:57:34

Hmm... do I watch on Sky Player or Eurosport Player?

  • Marti 28/01/2012 at 18:58:20

Hmm... do I watch on Sky Player or Eurosport Player?

24h is quite a lot. I guess you can move from one to the other until you finally decide your final choice :)

  • Mr C 28/01/2012 at 19:06:54

Also racing: Brian Johnson of the band AC/DC. Yes, really! Car #50 in DP class.

will they play thunderstruck as he makes his way around the warmup lap?

  • Marti 28/01/2012 at 19:09:38

will they play thunderstruck as he makes his way around the warmup lap?

Steven Tyler could sing it in the anthem-mode.

  • Mr C 28/01/2012 at 19:10:05

Steven Tyler could sing it in the anthem-mode.

you say "sing", i say "ruin" ;)

  • Marti 28/01/2012 at 19:25:55

    Thanks Pat :)

  • Pat W 28/01/2012 at 19:30:38

14 DP cars, lower than usual but a quality field inc some new Corvettes.

46(!) GT cars, higher than usual with big variety between all-pro quick cars and some less-than-pro drivers, that's a lot of traffic.

btw Speed and Motors should be live now. I'm off to get food. :)

  • Lynch 28/01/2012 at 19:54:59

hmm.. why isn't MotorsTV on SkyGo ... :-/

  • Pat W 28/01/2012 at 19:55:50

Just found out Eurosport 2 is 8.30 not 8pm. The green flag is at 8.30pm.. will be close

  • Christine 28/01/2012 at 20:41:46

I'm backing McNish/Luhr but not their teammates so much.

Dixon and Franchitti too but they share with JPM so might inherit crash damage..

  • Pat W 28/01/2012 at 21:28:02

I love them crowd sourcing what the flag was.

Shame they haven't worked out when to fade up the pit reporters!

  • Noelinho 28/01/2012 at 21:30:57

What was the flag? Did I miss that?

  • Christine 28/01/2012 at 21:31:15

What was the flag? Did I miss that?

It was some kind of blue and yellow one, apparently means faster cars are approaching.

  • Noelinho 28/01/2012 at 21:32:04

It was some kind of blue and yellow one, apparently means faster cars are approaching.

I guess the blue flag was sent along with the Titanic then…

  • Pat W 28/01/2012 at 21:34:52

It was some kind of blue and yellow one, apparently means faster cars are approaching.

The US equivalent of a blue flag. Not sure why Kirby thought it was purple.

    One hour down already.

  • Noelinho 28/01/2012 at 21:41:47

The US equivalent of a blue flag. Not sure why Kirby thought it was purple.

On my screen, it also looked purple.

  • Pat W 28/01/2012 at 21:42:22

Bad news on the SunTrust car

    @Ryan_Briscoe: I think we're done. Unbelievable...

  • Mr C 28/01/2012 at 21:42:31

Yeh, Handball! i need to swat up before the olympics! enjoying the race so far!

  • Pat W 28/01/2012 at 22:03:41

commentators aren't that clued up, are they?

Feels like a total rush job!

Why show handball highlights for 15 minutes midrace?

  • Lynch 28/01/2012 at 22:04:34

Why show handball highlights for 15 minutes midrace?

    eurosport schedules are always random...

  • Noelinho 28/01/2012 at 22:04:46

Why show handball highlights for 15 minutes midrace?

Well they would likely get complaints if they devoted the whole channel to Daytona for 24hrs.

  • Noelinho 28/01/2012 at 22:05:15

    eurosport schedules are always random...

This is also true, and often their own commentators don't even know if they'll be on live!

  • Pat W 28/01/2012 at 22:10:35

I've switched to Radio Le Mans

  • Pat W 28/01/2012 at 22:11:32

Eurosport are back and there's a full course caution

  • Noelinho 28/01/2012 at 22:11:34

I've switched to Radio Le Mans

I've just hit random links in the Sidepodcast menu and ended up on Christine's YouTube channel…

heh. gonna stretch me legs for a bit. back soon.

  • Noelinho 28/01/2012 at 22:12:44

Of course, there would be a caution during the long break, wouldn't there!

  • Pat W 28/01/2012 at 22:25:32

    Restart

  • Pat W 28/01/2012 at 22:38:18

    Bah, more yellow!

    Took long enough throwing it!

  • Steven Roy 28/01/2012 at 22:53:41

    Evening all.

Has it been interesting so far?

  • Steven Roy 28/01/2012 at 22:54:24

Hurley Haywood is driving? He is 104

  • Noelinho 28/01/2012 at 22:54:55

The guy in front in the pit lane race was definitely pulling away.

  • Pat W 28/01/2012 at 22:57:33

Has it been interesting so far?

Yeah, the DPs are having a nice battle. The SunTrust Briscoe/Angelelli car is either out or will return hours down, which is a shame.

GT seems fairly tight as well, at least the top 5 or 6.

Hurley Haywood is driving? He is 104

His 40th Daytona 24 - and he says his last, but he's said that before I think?

  • Steven Roy 28/01/2012 at 22:58:55

His 40th Daytona 24 - and he says his last, but he's said that before I think?

He retired from racing about 15 years ago

    oh phew :)

  • Noelinho 28/01/2012 at 23:04:44

    what?

    Not literally!

  • Pat W 28/01/2012 at 23:05:42

Looks like we've lost Eurosport until tomorrow..

  • Mr C 28/01/2012 at 23:06:07

Looks like we've lost Eurosport until tomorrow..

eh? thought it said until 1am?

  • Mr C 28/01/2012 at 23:06:25

eh? thought it said until 1am?

i mean, before we paid, it said coverage finished at 1am.

  • Pat W 28/01/2012 at 23:07:23

i mean, before we paid, it said coverage finished at 1am.

I seem to have Eurosport News instead of racing

  • Noelinho 28/01/2012 at 23:07:37

i mean, before we paid, it said coverage finished at 1am.

That's correct. It's on until 1am on British Eurosport 2.

  • Noelinho 28/01/2012 at 23:07:50

I seem to have Eurosport News instead of racing

    News is on until 11:15pm.

  • Noelinho 28/01/2012 at 23:17:47

    They're back.

  • Pat W 28/01/2012 at 23:18:38

Looks great at night, the way it's lit up.

  • Pat W 28/01/2012 at 23:20:23

    Justin Wilson leads, great going

  • Steven Roy 28/01/2012 at 23:54:42

McNish getting in the car in the lead. How boring. We want to see him hunting down the opposition

  • Pat W 29/01/2012 at 00:04:37

Wow, 3-way battle for the lead involving Wilson and McNish, fantastic

  • Steven Roy 29/01/2012 at 00:16:20

There is an 80 year old driver in the race - Dick Greer who is also the team owner.

  • Pat W 29/01/2012 at 00:20:00

There is an 80 year old driver in the race - Dick Greer who is also the team owner.

Wow. What's the minimum drive time? :)

  • Steven Roy 29/01/2012 at 00:21:38

Wow. What's the minimum drive time? :)

No idea. His 5 driver team totals 280 plus years but is not the oldest. There is another team with 5 drivers totalling 294 years. According to RLM they have lots of experience.

  • Pat W 29/01/2012 at 00:30:06

Andy Lally vs Jorg Bergmeister racing for the GT lead, and now the two Ganassi cars almost banging each others doors!

  • Noelinho 29/01/2012 at 00:38:44

    Oops.

  • Mr C 29/01/2012 at 00:38:45

    crash?

  • Pat W 29/01/2012 at 00:38:48

SC - no.41 Mazda spinning into the no.50 DP

  • Noelinho 29/01/2012 at 00:38:53

    Yep, yellow thrown.

bugger, back in time for a yellow :)

  • Pat W 29/01/2012 at 00:42:01

Love Michael Waltrip's attitude, learning a different form of racing

  • Mr C 29/01/2012 at 00:50:27

    what does montoya's sign read?

  • Steven Roy 29/01/2012 at 00:50:51

It's very distracting trying to write a Superbowl preview post while watching a race and keeping up with comments

  • Noelinho 29/01/2012 at 00:51:46

It's very distracting trying to write a Superbowl preview post while watching a race and keeping up with comments

So who are you putting as favourites for to win?

  • Noelinho 29/01/2012 at 00:51:52

    isn't it a week away?

    yes

  • Noelinho 29/01/2012 at 00:53:18

Yay, ski jumping coming up :-)

  • Mr C 29/01/2012 at 00:53:42

blimey, not back on eurosport until 5pm tomorrow.

am loving their app though. x100 better than last year.

  • Steven Roy 29/01/2012 at 00:55:53

    isn't it a week away?

Yes but like last year I want to put a preview post up in the next couple of days so people know about it. Last years was all about badgers and mascara. sidepodcast.com/p…gers-mascara-hike

  • Mr C 29/01/2012 at 00:56:30

    ahh, cool

  • Steven Roy 29/01/2012 at 00:56:56

So who are you putting as favourites for to win?

I am writing about the Patriots and Kai is writing about the Giants then somehow we will tie it alltogether in one semi-coherent post

  • Pat W 29/01/2012 at 00:58:54

am loving their app though. x100 better than last year.

It's very good, I wish I could put it on my telly.

can highly recommend the little appletv, but with rumours of a full spec apple television coming, it's probably not the best time to buy one.

  • Noelinho 29/01/2012 at 01:10:50

How would an Apple Television be different to Apple TV?

  • Mr C 29/01/2012 at 01:11:35

How would an Apple Television be different to Apple TV?

it's meant to have a screen. so the box is built into it. replaces your sony, samsung, lg, whatever.

  • Noelinho 29/01/2012 at 01:12:58

it's meant to have a screen. so the box is built into it. replaces your sony, samsung, lg, whatever.

Oh, OK, but if you already have a screen, isn't it just a really expensive screen? Although this is getting off-topic... maybe this is best discussed elsewhere.

  • Mr C 29/01/2012 at 01:16:48

Oh, OK, but if you already have a screen, isn't it just a really expensive screen? Although this is getting off-topic...

it's all rumour anyway, just didn't want to recommend it to pat, only for it to be replaced for something better soon.

eurosport + ipad + apple tv + tv is a fantastic (if not a little convoluted) setup. works very well.

maybe this is best discussed elsewhere

tweet me if you need more info, but eurosport app on apple television sounds like a more simple setup that everyone can fathom :)

  • Noelinho 29/01/2012 at 01:18:02

tweet me if you need more info

I'll add it to the list of things I need to tweet you about :-)

  • Pat W 29/01/2012 at 01:20:47

Can't afford either anyway right now

Oh, thanks, 'cos I'm still on the ski jumping here :-) Will switch over...

  • Mr C 29/01/2012 at 01:37:44

  • Steven Roy 29/01/2012 at 01:44:03

First draft of my part of the Superbowl preview post is done. So now I can sit back and watch McNish leading

  • Mr C 29/01/2012 at 01:44:34

flap from mcnish. odd watching him and no franck to back. better get used to that i guess.

  • Steven Roy 29/01/2012 at 01:48:17

I read somewhere Toyota are now going to run a second LMP1 car so maybe they plan on picking up some of the Peugeot drivers. Porsche are talking about doing LMP1 too so Franck should get a drive with one of those

  • Pat W 29/01/2012 at 01:52:46

Marco Andretti has never sat in the car and he is going to race it. Weird idea

    Amazed he's allowed.

This is the car which Kanaan was going to race, then it pulled out after losing a sponsor, somehow they're back with no TK and a last-minute Marco.. after some other swaps all week.

  • Steven Roy 29/01/2012 at 02:07:21

    Yellow again

  • Noelinho 29/01/2012 at 02:07:44

Cup of coffee does sounds good, but I may need to go to bed soon.

  • Noelinho 29/01/2012 at 02:14:20

The safety car gives me a great opportunity to pump up the tyres on my racing bike so I don't need to in the morning :-)

  • Pat W 29/01/2012 at 02:22:46

Fisico's car is out, the 62 Ferrari has engine problems :(

  • Noelinho 29/01/2012 at 02:28:39

Right, I must sleep. Oh, wait, there's a stray tire. I'll stay up for this.

  • Noelinho 29/01/2012 at 02:30:49

Well, no yellow thrown, seems to be nothing, so I'm off. will see if I can catch some of this tomorrow afternoon.

working on a sidebar widget, but christine keeps coming up with new ideas!

I know what you mean. It's incredible to be able to go to sleep and then get up and watch some more!

Nice to see Justin Bell behind the wheel here. He's interesting to listen to.

  • Pat W 29/01/2012 at 03:33:21

    Oryx again?? It keeps stopping.

  • Kai 29/01/2012 at 03:35:47

    Oryx again?? It keeps stopping.

I was thinking about how unpopular they'd be out there if they keep causing cautions. When they drive by, "oh no, not again!".

  • Kai 29/01/2012 at 03:46:50

I'm so tired after a day of tons of walking and great fun. Catch you guys on the flip side.

See ya for the end maybe

  • Pat W 29/01/2012 at 03:57:07

Wait, Marco is actually doing okay? Impressive.

  • Mr C 29/01/2012 at 03:57:52

Wait, Marco is actually doing okay? Impressive.

is that unexpected, is he a bit rubbish?

  • Pat W 29/01/2012 at 04:01:27

is that unexpected, is he a bit rubbish?

He's not great, but added to that he only arrived as the race was in progress because he'd been testing an IndyCar all day elsewhere in Florida. He's never driven a Daytona Protoype before, and last time he raced this track was in junior formulae. No practice time this week. I'm amazed they allowed it.

  • Pat W 29/01/2012 at 04:01:45

    My comment vanished I think

  • Mr C 29/01/2012 at 04:02:15

i saw it. did it not appear for you?

  • Mr C 29/01/2012 at 04:03:00

No practice time this week. I'm amazed they allowed it.

ahh yes. minor miracle then :)

  • Pat W 29/01/2012 at 04:04:37

i saw it. did it not appear for you?

    Nope.

ahh yes. minor miracle then :)

He does have sportscar experience in LMP, but still. They should've made him practice the car. Mind you, this is the first time he's ever driven like Grandad Mario. Drive one car, go to other track, drive completely different car, still fast.

  • Mr C 29/01/2012 at 04:05:54

    Nope.

    v.odd.

  • Pat W 29/01/2012 at 04:06:12

MotorsTV feed ended, there are Speed ones in the Racing list at Justin. But I'm going to bed in about 5 minutes, after this beer.

  • Mr C 29/01/2012 at 04:06:26

no probs, catch ya tomorrow sir.

See ya. I'll be back (I hope) at 10 or 11 or 12 depending on when I can drag myself up, but even then there'll still be 8 hrs left..

  • Mr C 29/01/2012 at 04:21:12

    Who is winning?

  • Marti 29/01/2012 at 08:21:12

    Morning everyone!

  • Marti 29/01/2012 at 08:36:04

    Anyone here?

  • Sebastian X 29/01/2012 at 09:07:53

Blow me, I am obviously out of date. I was looking forward to live-commenting this race on Sidepodcast, but checked the old Real-Time page and could not find a thread and was disapointed. Only found this via Pat's TMR site, although it is looking quiet out ther.

    Hello, anyone. Marti. Anyone else?

  • Marti 29/01/2012 at 09:08:47

Lacanta is on twitter. Seems everyone is still sleeping! Awesome race.

  • Sebastian X 29/01/2012 at 09:19:52

I was also expecting new comments to appear automatically, so sorry to be so slow in my reply.

Hello Marti. It is just nice to get any racing.

  • Marti 29/01/2012 at 09:26:02

Negri (second) is now 9seconds behind McNish. I guess his stint will be longer.

  • Christine 29/01/2012 at 09:26:39

I was also expecting new comments to appear automatically, so sorry to be so slow in my reply.

    They should be automatic.

  • Christine 29/01/2012 at 09:27:11

    I certainly did.

  • Sebastian X 29/01/2012 at 09:27:33

Now they are, but for some reason not initially.

  • Christine 29/01/2012 at 09:27:38

    Antony needs the work.

  • Marti 29/01/2012 at 09:36:01

We had a single camara-man on the whole Daytona track and now it seems he's gone to sleep. Booo

  • Sebastian X 29/01/2012 at 09:43:38

Am I missing something? I can not find any mention of this thread on either the front-page or the blog-page?

  • Christine 29/01/2012 at 10:39:17

Am I missing something? I can not find any mention of this thread on either the front-page or the blog-page?

    It's a work in progress.

  • Christine 29/01/2012 at 10:41:07

You can get to the events page from the homepage by clicking Contents and then Live events. Or you can head straight to sidepodcast.com/events. We try and tweet and publicise each event as much as possible whilst we're working on it.

There will be something massively obvious on the homepage in time for the F1 season.

  • Marti 29/01/2012 at 10:44:44

Studing time. I'll be back in one hour, i guess.Byee

  • Steven Roy 29/01/2012 at 11:05:17

I fell asleep around 2am. It was only when I noticed my laptop was powered up that I remembered there was a race. Nice to see McNish's car is still in the lead.

9 and a half hours to go

  • Marti 29/01/2012 at 11:10:02

There was a precious persuit between McNish and Allmendinger around the 12h mark... Awesome.

  • Steven Roy 29/01/2012 at 11:13:29

There was a precious persuit between McNish and Allmendinger around the 12h mark... Awesome.

Late last night there were three of them covered by a few seconds but they just ran in formation so it was not exciting. Although I am a McNish fan I almost don't want him to have the lead when he gets back in the car because there is no finer site in racing than Allan hunting down the cars in front

  • Pat W 29/01/2012 at 11:40:21

    Morning.

  • Pat W 29/01/2012 at 11:42:01

Looks like the cars have spread out a bit, still 3 on the lead lap though.

  • Steven Roy 29/01/2012 at 11:50:15

    Hi Pat.

Apparently some of the DPs had problems over night. It was mentioned in commentary but they didn't say who had what problems or what the impact of them would be

  • Pat W 29/01/2012 at 11:53:39

I'm looking at timing and both the Krohn and GAINSCO cars are a long way down the order. Action Express #9 also a bit back.

  • Pat W 29/01/2012 at 12:00:41

    Trouble for Olly Gavin

So we had an axle failure just about halfway. It was right when RW was going 2 switch 2 me, cost us 14laps. I just ran 2 stints

  • Marti 29/01/2012 at 12:02:05

    I'm back. Wohoo

  • Marti 29/01/2012 at 12:05:57

Watching this race I want to go the my PS3, open Gran Turismo 5 and race around the Daytona GP course... :P

  • Pat W 29/01/2012 at 12:13:19

    Wilson takes the lead :)

  • Marti 29/01/2012 at 12:13:57

Go Wilson go! Finally the º60 takes the lead.

  • Marti 29/01/2012 at 12:19:42

I've been tweeting for hours and I've not recieved a single RT xD Shame. Hate spanish alonso followers that don't support foreign competitions.

  • Marti 29/01/2012 at 12:20:58

Wilson is giving his best. He is scoring fastest laps lap after lap...

  • Steven Roy 29/01/2012 at 12:21:23

Off out to Argos to get an extension cable. I must have bought enough of those to run a cable to the power station by now. Where do they go

  • Pat W 29/01/2012 at 12:22:33

Pick me up one with a figure-8 end.. can't find one locally.

Brumos won a class at the first Daytona 24 in 1962 with a Porsche, now they lead a class at Daytona with a Porsche..

  • Pat W 29/01/2012 at 13:09:32

All seems a bit settled, just lapping around, waiting for the race to come to them. Reliability is biting for many.

  • Sebastian X 29/01/2012 at 13:36:17

This is the NASCAR of sports-cars. We spend most the race thinning out the possible winners, and then there is a sprint at the end.

  • Noelinho 29/01/2012 at 13:37:53

Just think, this race isn't much longer than the Australian Open final…

    Dario's a bit underpowered.. @DarioFranchitti:

Finished a hard old stint, trying to make up some laps, pretty hard when the only thing the 02 can pass on the straight is the pace car!!

  • Pat W 29/01/2012 at 14:01:24
  • Steven Roy 29/01/2012 at 14:06:47

I nip out and McNish is third. What happened?

    and Dario is not happy

  • Pat W 29/01/2012 at 14:08:42

I nip out and McNish is third. What happened?

Accident damage to the rear, not sure what hit it though

  • Steven Roy 29/01/2012 at 14:10:08

Accident damage to the rear, not sure what hit it though

That will be why the back end looked like it was falling off at the last stop

  • Sebastian X 29/01/2012 at 14:11:29

I think the fluid leaking out of the #8 car in the pits is a greater concern.

  • Pat W 29/01/2012 at 15:27:20

Approaching 5 hours to go. Ganassi's 01 into the lead, I took a break so I didn't see why but I guess pitstop sequence?

  • Steven Roy 29/01/2012 at 15:31:40

Approaching 5 hours to go. Ganassi's 01 into the lead, I took a break so I didn't see why but I guess pitstop sequence?

I haven't been concentrating on the race but I have had it running while I was doing other stuff. I haven't heard of any particular recent problems for any of the leaders.

  • Marti 29/01/2012 at 15:50:55

Heeello everyone again :) How's the race going?

  • Pat W 29/01/2012 at 15:54:41

Heeello everyone again :) How's the race going?

It's a little bit quiet but I get the feeling things could get interesting in the next hour or two.

  • Marti 29/01/2012 at 15:55:51

I've seen that the 01 has taken the lead on the prototypes race. Amazing! Any problems for the 8 and the 60?

Ryan Dalziel has just got the 8 Starworks back on to the lead lap (McNish's car). Now we have 3 cars on the lead lap again.

The besweet feed I posted at 2pm, muted listening to RLM.

The Motor feed which has RLM on it, is lower quality.

This yellow is for debris / track cleanup. Puts leaders togehter though.

  • Kai 29/01/2012 at 16:38:57

Greetings, all. Waking up to 4 hours still left is freaky and cool.

  • Sebastian X 29/01/2012 at 16:45:20

I am not sure I can make four hours. I was so shattered I went to bed this morning, and then could not sleep! Now my eyelids are drooping.

  • Pat W 29/01/2012 at 16:45:52

Get the caffeine. Good time for Mr C and Kai to join, this race is getting more interesting. It needed to.

  • Pat W 29/01/2012 at 16:48:24

    Yellow for that?

I slept about 10 hours after a really tiring day yesterday.

so I've missed most of the race. I'm appreciating the highlights packages quite a bit.

    *gets up from the couch*

"Honey, do you know where my racing suit is?"

  • Kai 29/01/2012 at 18:13:42

    Yikes, panel bashing

  • Kai 29/01/2012 at 18:18:17

If you guys are listening to the Speed coverage of this with Varsha and Hobbs, this is similar to the F1 coverage I get on Speed, minus the excellent Steve Matchett. It's...underwhelming....

  • Pat W 29/01/2012 at 18:18:35

Lead change in the pits after some driver changes, Pruett somehow beat Allmendinger. Pruett could win this.

  • Kai 29/01/2012 at 18:22:05

    Love Allan McNish.

  • Pat W 29/01/2012 at 18:59:38

Unfortunately he's not in the car anymore.

  • Steven Roy 29/01/2012 at 19:04:08

Unfortunately he's not in the car anymore.

I saw the start of his stint. I don't understand why they would not give him the last stint in a race where the point is to stay on the lead lap then race at the end

  • Pat W 29/01/2012 at 19:06:11

I think it'll be great if the 60 wins, Justin Wilson's comeback drive after injury and he drove brilliantly

  • Kai 29/01/2012 at 19:07:21

What incredibly good taste you have

:) He had some choice words for AJ Allmendinger "he moved up on me at 180 mph." And he went on to say (paraphrasing) I wouldn't do that if I were him, but if that's how he wants it... I've been in this game long enough to know that if you do that you have a good chance of it all going wrong and having a big one.

  • Steven Roy 29/01/2012 at 19:07:22

Dalziel getting in again. He seems to have driven a lot of stints

    @SeanEdwardsR

A tough double stint, power steering has failed and I learnt just how heavy these cars actually are! @NickTandyRacing in now.

Marco Andretti in his arriving late and hopping in was treated for dehydration afterward. Some other info on the race here, kind of a recap of some highlights.

I heard about Marco earlier. Getting in without even a seat fitting is asking for problems but dehydration should not have been a problem. There is an 80 year old driving in this race after all

  • Kai 29/01/2012 at 19:16:44

NOOO!!! Pruett major issues getting out of pit lane!!!! Couldn't get a gear!

917 is what Steve McQueen drove in the film Le Mans. They were evil cars and killed a few drivers. They even had a pressure gauge that showed when the chassis was getting weak and could split in half behind the driver.

You just have to wonder at the logic.

The chassis is liable to fall apart so we will put a gauge in to tell the driver when that will happen rather than fisx the problem. Says a lot that the governing body didn't think this was a massive problem and let the car pass scrutineering

Yeah in ACO/ALMS racing I can follow the GTs with interest, this one just hasn't grabbed me as much even though it is just as tight. Also with only 2 classes here, there was a lull for a long time earlier. With 4 classes, usually when 2 go quiet one of the others picks up.

I take great interest in the GT class in ALMS (and Le Mans), I'm a big Corvette fan. But I previously also took great interest in the LMP's because of Audi vs. Peugeot. Not sure how that's gonna work out this year without the Pugs.

and here it's mostly Porsche GT3 cup cars. And I friggin' hate them.

at least in ALMS it's a knock down drag out fight between Corvettes, BMW's, and Porsche's almost every time.

Le Mans is the only one up in the air, especially if Peugeot magic a customer car there. Got to beat the race as much as the competition. Like Daytona!

Late comment, I know, but it's England v. Scotland on Saturday, isn't it?

Sorry, comments are now closed to new entries.
